(A/N: See here! Another fanfic! I got the idea for it while thinking about when Mario shows up to crash the wedding in "Super Mario Odyssey". This completely new ending for the game sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to watch!)
Mario and Cappy were on their way to the Moon Kingdom, ready to put a stop to Bowser's wedding once and for all. Mario, in his new white wedding tuxedo, was standing by the wardrobe, going over the outfits he had acquired on his adventure. Cappy was on Mario's head, acting as the hat to go with the tuxedo.
Before long, Mario came across the latest hat he received as a gift from Banktoad of the Toad Brigade in Bowser's Kingdom. It was called the Invisibility Hat.
(A/N: Okay, I know Mario doesn't get this particular hat until he completes the Darker Side, and that the members of the Toad Brigade don't give him anything, but this is my fanfic, so work with me, okay?)
"What do you suppose that hat will do, other than be very easy to lose?" Cappy asked as Mario held the hat. It was invisible, but Mario could feel it in his hands.
"Only one way to find out, Cappy. Turn into it and let's see!" said Mario.
So Cappy felt around for the hat, and once he had a hold of it, he took it from Mario, and took its form... and he disappeared before landing on Mario's head, causing him to disappear as well!
"Hey, where did we go?!" Mario asked, surprised that he suddenly lost sight of himself.
"Well, I turned into the hat, so I'm invisible. I think the hat turns you invisible when you wear it, Mario." Cappy said.
"Wait a minute! You mean this hat works like Harry Potter's invisibility cloak?" Mario asked.
"I guess, but this is an invisible hat, not a cloak. His cloak is visible until he uses it, and any part of his body not covered is still visible. You're completely invisible in this." Cappy said.
"Okay, that's pretty cool, but if it's okay with you, I think I want to be visible again." Mario said.
"No problem. I want to be visible again myself." said Cappy, and with that said, he left Mario's head, which made Mario visible, and Cappy became visible as he turned back into Mario's wedding hat, landing neatly on the plumber's head.
"I can't believe we did that!" Mario said, holding the Invisibility Hat once more.
"Neither can I!" Cappy added.
"This hat might come in handy." Mario said.
"Yeah. Imagine if you'd gotten this hat and used it before Bowser got away, leaving you to deal with the Broodals! He wouldn't have seen you coming to rescue Peach." Cappy said.
"And he wouldn't have been able to hurt me because he wouldn't know where the heck I was! He could miss me by a mile every time he tried to..." Mario started.
Then a lightbulb appeared over Mario's head.
"Of course!" Mario said.
"What is it?" Cappy asked.
"I just had the most perfect idea ever!" Mario exclaimed.
"You think we should...?" Cappy started.
"Let's-a go and rescue my girl without being seen!" Mario said.
"But she won't know that you're the one who's saving her. That might scare her, and you don't want to do that." Cappy said.
"It's true that I don't want to scare Peach. But I'll show her that it's-a me who did the saving after we get to the Odyssey and take off." Mario said.
"Even if she does suspect that it's you, we can hope she doesn't say anything to tip Bowser off." Cappy said.
"That's the hard part. I can't let her know that I'm okay because she doesn't have her cell phone on her, and even if she did, Bowser would've found out, and we can't have that." Mario said.
"No wonder she always looked sad until she saw you. If she had her cell phone on her, she wouldn't have to worry about you being dead." Cappy said.
"When I save her, I plan to make sure she never has to worry like that ever again." Mario told him.
By then, they reached the Moon Kingdom, and the first sound they heard as they disembarked was the sound of wedding bells ringing from the Wedding Hall on Ever-After Hill.
"Wedding bells?!" Mario gasped.
"Has the wedding already begun?" Cappy asked.
"I hope not! And I certainly hope that the bells aren't ringing for... another reason." Mario said. He didn't want to find out that Bowser had succeeded in making Peach his wife. The thought made him feel sick to his stomach.
"We've got to hurry!" Cappy said.
"Quick! Do it now! Let's be invisible!" Mario said.
Cappy became the Invisibility Hat, and he and Mario were gone from sight. It was a good thing that nobody was there to see them disappear. It's possible that if anyone was here, they were at the Wedding Hall right now, attending the wedding as guests.
"Let's-a go rescue the woman of my dreams!" Mario said, and he ran to Ever-After Hill as fast as his legs could carry him.
When they got in the Wedding Hall, they were right outside the room where the wedding was taking place.
"You wanna barge right in?" Cappy asked Mario.
"No. If I do that, it'll get Bowser's attention, and that's the last thing I want to do." Mario said. He quickly but quietly opened the doors and made his way into the room.
No one noticed that the doors had been opened. The only thing the guests noticed was that the bride was unhappy with the whole thing, 'cause the groom kept trying to force her to wear the Binding Band, and she kept pushing it back.
"Hold still and let me put the Binding Band on you, Peach!" Bowser yelled at Peach.
"NO! It's too big for me to wear! It won't fit me! And besides, I'll die before I let you make me your wife!" Peach declared.
"One problem with that, pretty missy: I can't marry you when you're dead!" Bowser said.
"That's just it! We're not supposed to marry! You know that! Everyone knows that!" Peach shot back.
"You got that right." Mario mumbled under his breath as he approached Princess Peach.
"I don't care. Hold still." Bowser said, still trying to force her into marriage.
"NEVER!" Peach thundered.
"She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen..." Mario sighed to himself, lovestruck.
"Mario! Gawk at Peach later! You have to save her now! If you don't, both of you are going to be living miserably ever after! Prevent that from happening!" Cappy reminded him in a loud whisper.
"Oh, right. Sorry." Mario whispered back.
Wasting no more time, Mario swept Princess Peach into his arms, holding her bridal style.
"Whoa!" Peach cried in surprise as she felt herself being lifted off of the ground.
"What the-?!" Bowser exclaimed, surprised as he realized that Peach was floating in mid-air.
"What's going on?!" Peach asked as she felt somebody carrying her out of the Wedding Hall. She was very surprised, but also happy that this mystery person wasn't carrying her the way Bowser Jr. did when he tried making off with her when she and Mario visited Isle Delfino. She wanted to see who was holding her, but she couldn't see them. Whoever this person was, they were invisible.
"Don't let them get away!" Bowser yelled, but everyone rushed to block the exit to the main room after the invisible person and the Princess escaped. No one wanted to stop the invisible person who was getting Peach away from Bowser. Apparently, they were more than willing to let this mysterious person escape with the bride that did not wish to marry a groom who did not care about her feelings at all.
"Idiots..." Bowser facepalmed, realizing that if he wanted to get Peach back, he'd have to do it himself. This was not going to be fun.
"Oh, fine then! I'll go stop them myself!" Bowser yelled, pushing everyone out of his way and running out of the Wedding Hall.
"How rude!" said Mayor Pauline as Bowser ran out of the Wedding Hall like the giant, lumbering moron he was.
Just for that, everyone hoped Bowser had no luck in finding the bride and killing the unidentified person who ran off with her.
By the time Bowser got out of the Wedding Hall, Peach was nowhere in sight, just like her rescuer. This had him more than a little ticked off.
"I know you're out here, Princess Peach! You can't hide from me forever, girl! When I find you (and believe me, I will), we're gonna get married whether you like it or not! And then the Mushroom Kingdom will be mine! All mine! BWAHAHAHA!" Bowser roared, determined to search the Moon Kingdom for the Princess.
When Peach heard Bowser's voice, she shut her eyes tight and started trembling in the arms of whoever it was that was rescuing her. Or were they kidnapping her? She didn't know, but she really didn't care. All she knew was, this mystery person was taking her away from Bowser, and she couldn't be happier to be escaping a marriage that would be short-lived and devoid of love and happiness. At least, she would if her rescuer managed to get her away from here before Bowser found them!
Mario was glad that Peach was keeping quiet, but he knew that she was doing so because she didn't want to give away their location to Bowser. He wondered if she knew she was being rescued, or if she knew that he was the one doing the deed. Hearing Bowser made him speed up. The last thing he wanted was for Bowser to spot the Odyssey before he and Peach got to it. If he found it first, they'd never get home. Also, he'd know who Peach's rescuer was, and Mario could not risk Bowser finding out that he was the one doing the rescuing.
Within minutes, the Odyssey was in sight. Peach opened her eyes when her rescuer set her on her feet, and she quickly got into the Odyssey. Her rescuer followed her in and started up the ship. The Odyssey took off, but Bowser didn't notice. He was much too busy combing the Moon Kingdom in search of Princess Peach, even though his search was going to prove to be fruitless.
Meanwhile, Peach heaved a huge sigh of relief as they were leaving the Moon Kingdom. She was glad to be getting away from Bowser, and a fate worse than death.
"I do wish I could see who our rescuer is. I owe them a debt of gratitude." Peach said to Tiara, who turned back into her Bonneter self.
"Rescuer? But Peach, how do you know this mystery person isn't kidnapping us?" Tiara asked nervously.
"Anyone who gets us away from Bowser is rescuing us." Peach said.
"Okay, I guess that makes sense." Tiara mumbled, before asking, "So, where is this person who rescued us?"
"Um, rescuer, can you please show yourself to me? I'd really like to know who you are, so if you have a way of showing yourself, please do so." Peach said to the area around her, since her rescuer was invisible.
"Oh right. Now that we're all safe..." Mario thought.
Cappy knew it, too.
At that moment, Mario and Cappy appeared in front of the girls.
"SURPRISE!" the heroic duo shouted.
"Mario! That was you who saved me?!" Peach asked, very surprised.
"You bet it was!" Mario replied.
"I should have known it was you! Thank you so much!" Peach said as she knelt down and hugged Mario while covering his face with kisses, which had him blushing like a madman.
"Cappy! That was the most incredible magic trick I've ever seen you do! How did you and Mario turn invisible like that?!" Tiara asked, impressed with the supposed magic act her brother and Mario just performed for her and Peach.
"It wasn't a magic trick, sis. We got the Invisibility Hat. It makes both of us invisible. Mario wanted to rescue Peach without being seen by Bowser, so we decided to go with that." Cappy said.
"Where did you get that hat?!" Tiara asked.
"A member of the Toad Brigade gave it to Mario, figuring that it might help him, and did it ever!" Cappy exclaimed.
"I'm so glad you came to rescue me, Mario. I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't shown up." Peach said, her eyes sparkling as she smiled at her hero.
"You know I'd never let Bowser marry you. Not when we know what he'll do once he becomes your husband." Mario said, feeling like he could lose himself in her lovely blue eyes.
"What would happen?" Cappy asked.
"Is it bad?" Tiara asked, very nervous.
"The worst thing in the world, and Bowser just said it. Not only would he be my husband, he'd be ruling the Mushroom Kingdom!" Peach said.
"No! Not that! Anything but that!" Tiara cried.
"Oh, but that's not even the worst part!" Mario said.
"It's not?" Tiara asked.
"What's the worst part?" Cappy asked, even though he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to know. He didn't know what could possibly be worse than being married to Bowser.
"I don't want to know!" Tiara said, very upset.
"Maybe you should." Peach told her.
"Peach knows what Bowser wants to do as soon as he gets to be King of the Mushroom Kingdom." Mario began.
"He'd lay it to waste!" Peach said.
"WHAT?! ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS WITH US?!" the Bonneters gasped, completely in shock.
"As serious as Bowser was about marrying me." Peach said.
"Oh my gosh! That's a horrible thing for him to do!" Tiara cried.
"Not as horrible as the worst part, which we're getting to." Peach said.
"There's no way Peach would let Bowser lay her kingdom to waste. The only way he could do that is if he... killed her. And since they were married, he still gets to rule her kingdom!" Mario said.
"Wouldn't her people protest?" Tiara asked.
"Not when Bowser likes the thought of turning my people into stones. If they're stones and I'm dead, then the Mushroom Kingdom would be nothing more than a burning wasteland that can never be fully restored to its former glory." Peach said, feeling sad.
"That is beyond cruel!" said Cappy, sounding angry that Bowser would do such an awful thing to Peach. Plus, it would've broken Mario's heart.
"And that's why I really wanted to save Peach." Mario said.
"I can't thank you enough, Mario. You're the most wonderful man in the universe." Peach said as she kissed him again.
"I love you, too, my princess..." Mario replied, lovestruck.
Don't think for one second that the story ends here; this is only the end of Chapter 1. You see, I plan to make this story a chapter story, and it'll add lots more to the post-game stuff, too. And remember, the title of the story promises a happy ending, and if you wanna see how happy it's going to be, then you'd better stay tuned!
