Chapter 1
They always say be careful what you wish for.
Valentina lay sprawled on the couch as the TV screamed Japanese. Her father stood in front of her, blocking her view of the giants on the screen. She glared, waiting for him to speak.
"Why do you watch this stuff?" he huffed. "You can't even understand what they're saying!"
"I could if you weren't blocking the subtitles!" She waved her arm in annoyance.
Her father proceeded to make awful impressions of the Japanese language as he finally walked away. She rolled her eyes and turned her attention to the TV again. The end credits for Attack on Titan began playing, indicating it was time for the next episode in her binge-fest.
It was the fourth or fifth time she watched the series—she didn't know, she lost count. She wasn't sure why she loved it so much, it's not like it's the nicest show to watch. She hardly flinched anymore when someone was brutally murdered onscreen. She grabbed the X-box controller and clicked for the next episode.
Maybe it had to do with how miserable she was with her own life. All the characters in Attack on Titan had a purpose. Fighting titans, protecting their friends, overthrowing the government, stealing potatoes. All she did was go to school, work, dance practice, and repeat. She had done well for herself, but life still just seems boring. She couldn't imagine fighting huge ass giants was any fun, but it seemed a whole lot better than studying for midterms.
She had been laying on the couch for most of the day, the sun set a couple of hours ago. She shoved an Oreo cookie into her mouth as the opening credits came to an end. She had made it halfway through Season 2 and watched as the Scouts gathered atop the wall after the battle at Castle Utgard. She never really understood why they went back up the wall. Was it in case there were more titans? Probably. She couldn't remember. She was surprised she hadn't gotten tired of the show yet. She was all caught up on the manga so it wasn't like she didn't know what was going to happen. In hindsight, it's actually pretty crazy how much you realize was going on right in front of everyone.
Valentina let out a long yawn. She might have been laying there too long. She closed her packet of Oreos and set it on the coffee table. She grabbed the blanket draped over the back of the couch and covered herself, tucking it just beneath her chin. She laid down facing the TV. As her eyesight blurred after another long yawn, she wondered what it would be like to be in a world full of man-eating giants.
The world shook underneath her.
Valentina sat up straight, immediately thinking, ah damn, not an earthquake. She got up too fast, black stars clouded her vision and she wobbled on her feet. When her vision cleared, it was no longer night. And she was no longer in her living room.
Glancing around, she gaped at the large grassy fields around her. She marveled at the tall grass and trees that lined the horizon. She was so in awe of her surroundings that she had momentarily forgotten that the world was trembling. In an open space though, she was safe from anything falling on her. Her chest tightened as she realized the earthquake was lasting way too long. She had never experienced one lasting less than a minute, and a minute had definitely passed already.
Panicking, she looked around again. How were there no buildings nearby? Am I dreaming? I should've woken up by now.
She looked down and saw that she was in jeans and her beat-up Converse. Wasn't I wearing sweatpants and socks? Her t-shirt was the same, an old white tee with the Google logo.
The earth was still shaking. What the fuck? It was when she began walking that she realized the earth wasn't moving in the weird wavy or side by side shaking that usually came from earthquakes. It was thud, thud, thud. Behind the line of trees in front of her, she saw a giant figure emerge from the foliage.
"No way," Valentina mumbled. It was pudgy thing, with round cheeks and a big nose. Its round belly stood in stark contrast to its flimsy arms and legs. It grinned like the chesire cat from Alice in Wonderland. "It's a fucking titan."
She pinched herself, sure that she was dreaming. She had dreamt things like this before. She would wake up soon.
She stood there in the middle of the grassy field, slapping her cheeks and pinching her hands and wrists. She still wasn't waking up. The giant moved closer. It was still a good distance away, but if she didn't start moving soon, she would be titan food.
Upon that realization, she started running in the opposite direction. As if sensing her retreat, the giant began to move faster. Not fast in that crackhead way you see in the anime, but fast enough that she would be caught pretty soon.
Aw man, I really should've started doing cardio at the gym. Her heart pounded in her ears and her breath came out of her mouth in short huffs. She glanced back, almost tripping. The titan was getting closer. She pushed harder, her lungs and legs burning with exertion.
Valentina could no longer tell if the pounding in her ears came from her rapidly beating heart or the giant's footfalls right behind her. Any thoughts that this had been a dream were far gone. She winced as she felt a sharp breeze behind her. She shrieked. The titan's hand barely missed her. She continued running, knowing it was hopeless as the ground in front of her shaded over. Her breath was ripped from her chest as giant fingers wrapped around her abdomen. She didn't even bother fighting. She had no weapon and she was alone in a giant ass field.
As the titan lifted Valentina to its mouth, she pleaded once more, this is a dream, a horrible nightmare.
Just as her Converse brushed the giant's mouth, it suddenly jerked forward, and dropped her from its grasp. Her eyes widened as everything seemed to move in slow motion. She stared up as the titan's face fell forward, and she was sure she would either end up in its mouth or get crushed by it. She braced herself for impact when she felt weight push into her from the side. An arm was wrapped around her and they flew through the air before landing safely on the ground.
Now on her hands and knees, Valentina stared at the ground, heavy breaths exhaling from her mouth. Her body shook, and her chest strained with every breath. If her ribs weren't broken, they were definitely bruised. She coughed, terrified that blood would flow from her mouth, but it was only saliva. Her eyes burned with unshed tears.
I'm okay, I'm okay, I'm ok—
"Oi brat," a voice called. "What are you doing outside of the walls?"
What?
"Oi, answer me!"
Valentina shifted her weight to rest on her legs and looked up at the voice's owner. She gasped. No way.
Mouth agape, Valentina stared at the man in front of her. Short black hair, gray eyes, an expressionless face, and just slightly taller than her.
"Levi?"
