Hello and welcome! Yes I've decided to continue with my other Dolittle story as well (I've already got one started). This movie was sweet and heartwarming, and, if you've checked out my Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes love stories, you'll know that I'm a little bit in love with RDJ at the moment, so I couldn't resist doing a love story for this fantasy adventure and the great John Dolittle! ;)
Here's a Full Summary:
With passions for sketching and painting, Carina Timmons has dreams of traveling to Paris and becoming an artist. Currently, she is employed as governess to Tommy Stubbins who is always getting himself into wild situations. During one such time, Tommy and Carina come across the home of the reclusive Dr. John Dolittle, an extraordinary and passionate doctor who can speak with animals. Together they'll embark on a daring adventure, and Carina will realize that following your heart and doing what you love is the most important thing of all. (JohnDolittleXOC)
In this version of the story, Lily was John's sister, not his wife.
I do not own! I only own my character and her storyline and any other plot points I make up!
Thank you and I hope you enjoy this story! :)
One - Animal Sanctuary
Carina sat at the base of an oak tree scribbling away in her sketchbook. It was a perfectly calm day, so she thought that while Tommy was out with his uncle and cousin and she had a rare moment to herself, she would take this free time to draw the pond.
Ducks swam lazily across the surface, moving slowly enough that she could capture them in her drawing. Sometimes she wished you could ask the animals to sit still while you drew them.
"Carina! Carina!"
The calm was broken as Tommy's voice broke her out of her entranced state. She threw down her sketchbook and pencil, jumping to her feet and brushing off her paint-splattered skirt. "Tommy?"
"Carina!" Tommy broke through the trees, clutching something in his hands.
"Tommy, what is it?"
"I need help-" He held out his small leather bag, and she gasped when she saw what lay inside: a wounded squirrel.
"Oh, poor creature! What happened?"
"I shot him."
"You what?!"
"It was an accident, I swear! Uncle wanted me to try and shoot some ducks, but I missed because I panicked and ended up shooting this little guy instead. I'm sorry little fella. What should we do?"
"I'm not sure," she admitted. The poor squirrel trembled in pain.
"I wish I knew what to do, I want to help him. I feel awful." Tommy had hopes of one day becoming an animal doctor, and his love for animals clashed with the views of his family of hunters.
"Follow Poly."
The two exchanged a glance at the sudden voice.
"Over here."
Looking up into a nearby tree, they found the source of the voice: a parrot sat perched on a branch above them. She was beautiful, with green, blue, and yellow feathers.
"Follow Poly," she squawked again, before taking flight.
Tommy moved to follow, but Carina stopped him. "Tommy, wait. What are you doing?"
"You heard what she said."
"Yes, but-"
"She was speaking to us."
"Maybe, but - as your governess-"
"But I don't need a governess! I need to help this squirrel." With that, he took off after the parrot.
Carina sighed, picking up her bag and putting it over her shoulder. She wasn't about to let him go off on his own.
The parrot, Poly, led them deeper into the forest, down a path that appeared like it had not been traveled along for years.
The path led them to a gateway that was sealed shut, ivy having infested the gate. A dirty plaque read:
DOLITTLE MANOR
Home of Dr. John and Lily Dolittle
We treat all animals
Walk, hop, and fly-ins accepted.
"Dr. Dolittle," cried Tommy. "The famous animal doctor!"
"Sounds like just the person we need," agreed Carina.
Tommy moved to knock on the gates, but was stopped by the parrot.
"Follow Poly!" She led them down the stone wall extending from the gate, leading to a hole covered with ivy.
"Tommy, we cannot go trespassing on someone's property," Carina cried.
"You don't have to come."
"You came to me for help, I'm not leaving you."
All thoughts of trespassing fled from her mind as soon as they emerged onto the grounds.
"Oh my-" She wanted to paint this place, but she was certain she wouldn't be able to capture its natural beauty.
Butterflies of all colours fluttered around the vast field where elephants and giraffes and even monkeys roamed freely. What an incredibly fascinating place!
A large, colourful mansion lay ahead, which was where Poly seemed to be leading them to.
Carina was so entranced by their surroundings that she almost didn't notice the rustling in the nearby bushes.
A polar bear popped out, appearing to have been enjoying some berries.
"Tommy, stay back," Carina whispered as the bear noticed them. "AHHH!" The next thing she knew, something was wrapping around her and hoisting her into the air - a rope net. She had walked right into a trap.
"Carina!" Tommy cried.
"I knew trespassing was a bad idea!"
"I'll be back! Stay there!"
"I can't go anywhere!"
"Right, sorry." With that, Tommy took off towards the house, still cradling the squirrel.
He was nearing the front entrance when he collided with something - someone - who turned out to be a young woman.
"I'm so sorry!" he cried, scrambling to his feet. "Here, let me help you." He offered his hand to help her to her feet - he had knocked her right over.
"Thank you." She brushed off her cloak. "Who are you?"
"Tommy Stubbins. Who are you?"
"You may call me Lady Rose. I come from Buckingham Palace on urgent business. I'm looking for Dr. John Dolittle."
"So am I."
Together, they approached the front door. Before they could barely knock, the door was thrown open by a gorilla who promptly roared in their face.
Tommy screamed, causing the gorilla to, much to their surprise, scream back. Moments later, the gorilla fell back, appearing to have fainted.
"A gorilla answering the door, wonderful," exclaimed Rose, slightly shaken. "Just as the Queen said..." She stepped over the gorilla and Tommy followed her into the house.
The house was just as fascinating as the grounds. There were more animals inside, but no sign of the doctor himself.
"Maybe no one's home," said Tommy. "Except for the animals."
But Rose was kneeling down to peer beneath the table. "Are you alright down there?"
"Not here!" came a voice.
"Hello," she said, smiling.
A man peeked out. He was dressed in a robe that was looking worse for wear, with wild hair and a beard that dragged on the ground it was so long.
"Are you Doctor John Dolittle?"
"That's me."
"Dr. Dolittle, I come on urgent business: you have been summoned to Buckingham Palace by the Queen herself," Rose explained.
"I come on urgent business as well," explained Tommy. "I have an injured squirrel, and my governess is stuck in the trap outside."
"The Queen has fallen gravely ill," continued Rose.
"Uh uh, I don't want to hear it. Go on. The birds will show you out." The man waved them away.
"Did you not hear what I said? The Queen-"
"Well did you not hear what I said? Get going."
"The Queen asked for you by name, sir."
"My house has descended into chaos!"
"I have an injured squirrel," Tommy tried to explain again.
This caught Dolittle's attention. "Ah, and how was he injured?"
"I-I-"
"Speak up, boy, I can't hear you."
"I shot him - it was an accident," he quickly added. "I didn't mean to."
"Ah, humans never change."
"Please help him." Tommy placed the squirrel in Dolittle's lap. "And please get my governess out of your trap - I think she'll be rather cross with me about it."
"You will not tend to a squirrel while the Queen of England's life hangs in the balance," cried Rose.
"Hmm, well then you don't know me very well." Dolittle leapt to his feet. "Chaos indeed! Very well, it seems we have a governess to help, a squirrel to save, and the Queen to visit."
Carina would have tried to escape - if it wasn't for the polar bear sitting directly beneath her.
"Oh, please don't eat me!" she cried, despite knowing it was useless. The bear rose up on his hind legs, standing beneath where she was hanging. "Oh, no no no no no!"
"Carina!" She looked to see Tommy running back, not a moment too soon, followed by a man and a girl.
"Yoshi, stand down!" cried the man.
The bear obeyed and trotted back into the bushes.
"Carina, this is Dr. Dolittle," Tommy explained. "And Lady Rose," he also introduced the girl.
"Elliot, Elsie, please help her down," said Dolittle.
Two monkeys scampered up the tree, untying the knot at the top of the net.
"Oh!" She gave a cry when the net opened, dropping her.
She didn't hit the ground, however, but fell right into the Doctor's arms.
"Oh! Hello," she said as he set her back onto her feet. "Thank you."
The Doctor observed her. "You have paint in your hair."
"Oh. Thank you."
"Well, that is done!" He clapped his hands, turned on his heel, and headed back towards the house, beard dragging through the grass behind him.
"That's Dr. Dolittle?" she asked Tommy.
"Yes, wonderful isn't he?"
"He's different than I imagined."
Rose was chasing after the Doctor on his way back to his house. "Doctor, wait! What about Her Majesty?"
"The governess is saved. Now we must heal a squirrel, and then to the Queen."
There we are, the first chapter! If you're interested, I'm also writing a separate Dolittle story based on John and Lily's love story :)
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! :)
