Summary:

John and Tommy let their imaginations soar.

"I know what Pokémon that is! It's Luvdisc!"

The hospital room floor was papered in children's drawings and books, and crayons and pencil crayons were left to lie and roll all over.

Childish renderings of some of the Gym Leaders, the Champion, his brother, Mr. Rose, his assistant, and their and various standalone Pokémon showed up on these sheets, inspired by the marathon of Pokémon battles the boys just watched on the telly while waiting for their nine-hour procedure to finish.

John wasn't supposed to see this particular piece. Tommy hadn't even meant to draw it. He and Tommy were on such a creative marathon themselves, Tommy let his imagination race ahead of him. Before he even realized his hand was moving again, he'd transferred what he was feeling directly from crayon to page.

Mumbling, he hurriedly rubbed a black dot into the pink heart, pressing extra hard to scrape through the top layer of wax. "Y-yep! That's a Luvdisc, John! You figured it out!"

"I gotta try drawing a Luvdisc! Then you tell me if mine's any good!"

"Sh-sure."

Besides Pokémon, John was his only real joy. The orderlies – while kind – their presence reminded Tommy his likelihood of becoming a Pokémon Trainer rested on luck (forget the likelihood he and John would both fight past their illness).

"How's that?" John presented the completed picture to him. In it, the two of them were hitting a Poké Ball beach ball around. A Luvdisc was jumping up out the waves and in between them.

"John, this is…"

"Us! With Luvdisc!"

Tommy couldn't be certain of any significance within John's cartoon beyond it being a nice picture.

Still, for Tommy to peek at them enjoying life out and about was huge.

"That's amazing, John!"
