Percy strolled along the beach, contented. He was back at Camp Half-Blood for the weekend, two weeks after Leo and Jason blew up Dirt Face. New Rome was his new base now, with apologies to Camp Half-Blood. His marine biology classes were going great and Annabeth was buried under a sea of books about architecture. Luckily, she liked it. The rest of his friends' lives were also chugging along smoothly. Or as much as possible for a demigod, like a few monster attacks. You know, the usual stuff.
He smiled contentedly at the sea. His dad, along with the rest of the Olympians, seemed to be in a good mood. Not a ripple broke the calm waters. So I finally found peace, Mom will be so happy. Sucks for you, Fates! Guess a demigod can live a normal life, he thought. Big Mistake. You never cursed the Fates unless you wanted REALLY bad luck. Unfortunately, Percy had a knack for getting powerful people mad.
"This boy is incorrigible," said Clotho.
"Indeed," said Atropos.
"He needs a lesson," said Iachesis.
"Unfortunately, there is no challenge for him in this world," the Three Fates said in unison.
They looked at one another.
"We will send him to another world."
Percy lay down in his bunk, dreaming of Annabeth. He closed his eyes and- BAM!
He jumped down, reflexes taking over. Riptide appeared in his hand. He looked and saw them, just the same as ever.
He groaned. "Oh, it's you again. Why can't you leave me alone? Oh, whatever. You just seem to enjoy making our lives difficult. Well, what do you want?"
One of them spoke. "It's your attitude that is the problem, Perseus Jackson. You should learn to show a bit more respect-"
"Yeah, blah blah blah," Percy cut in. "Cut the talk and tell me what you three want," pointing his sword at them to show that he meant business.
"I am Clotho. I am here to offer you a deal. If you accomplish this, you will receive our blessing, meaning that you will be lucky in everything you attempt for five years."
Percy looked suspiciously at the old hag. She still looked as repulsive as ever. "And what is your deal exactly?"
Clotho took a breath. This was going to take long.
An hour later, she concluded "... and so you have to go there for ... for a certain period of time. Remember, you will be eleven years old in appearance when you appear there, but you will have all your memories and will be restored to your former age when you return here."
Percy rubbed his head. Multiverses, multi-Earths, wizards..., it made his head spin. And let's just say Percy had justified his Seaweed Brain title quite well.
"So, in summary, I've got to help this Harry kid through his first year of school. And then I'll return here as if no time has passed? "
"Correct," said the second of the Fates. Percy tried to remember her name, Apropos? No... oh it's Atropos.
He crossed his arms. He had finally thought that his life was settled, but then those cursed Fates had to interfere. Why can't I get a break? He thought of something.
"What happens if I refuse?"
"You will not go," said the third one.
Percy sighed in relief and started climbing onto his bunk. "Well, I guess I won't be going, then! See-"
"Because you will be dead," said Clotho.
He froze, then scowled. Who knew they had a sense of humour? Oh... fate has a twisted sense of humour. I forgot.
He jumped down and growled," Well, let's not waste time. Let's get this over with."
He was in a hurry to complete this 'quest'. Also, though he would never admit it, he was itching for a new adventure. Percy had become used to a life on the edge and a small part of him thrived on challenges. And he had to admit even to himself, the past couple of weeks had been kind of boring. Sure, he got to fight a few monsters, but they didn't even last five seconds. Yes, Percy wanted a new challenge.
"All right," Iachesis pulled out a ring from nowhere and held it out to him. "Wear it and you will appear there. Remember, the Greek gods and goddesses do not exist there, and even we do not. We have decided, however, to let you retain your powers over water. Riptide will remain here, since there is no use for it in that world."
Percy looked shocked. Absentmindedly, he rubbed his cheek. Riptide had been with him since he was twelve. He hadn't gone anywhere without it. It had become his trusted companion. But since there were no monsters in that world, he figured he could manage without it for a year. He sighed in defeat.
"Thanks. Anything else?"
When they shook their heads, Percy reached and took the ring. He stared at it. It was unremarkable, a weathered grey colour, and devoid of markings.
He took a deep breath and put-
"And, Percy Jackson?," said the Fates together.
"What?"
They stared at him. Percy felt unnerved. Even though they looked like old ladies, there was definitely something off about them. They felt ancient and powerful. He shook his head, clearing himself of such thoughts.
"Good luck," said the Three Fates.
Percy looked at them for a moment, and then slid the ring on to his right hand's ring finger.
"I'll get you this time, Fred!" roared a gangly looking eleven year old. He was tall for his age and had a shock of vivid red hair that looked like it hadn't seen a comb for days. He was rushing along the stairs of a house that had several storeys but was so crooked it was a wonder it was still standing. Think of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but in several directions.
Laughter came from up the stairs. "You could never catch us, ickle Ronniekins." A pair of identical twins sat at the top of the stairs, rocking with laughter. They looked to be a couple years older than the boy, with the same red hair.
"Did you see his face when he sat on it, Fred?"
"I thought I'd die from stopping myself from laughing!" the one called Fred chortled.
The boy came up just in time to catch the last sentence. He stopped, and his face turned as red as his hair. He shouted.
"YOU-"
BOOM.
The twins' laughter died away as suddenly as if someone had switched off the audio. They looked outside, from where the noise undoubtedly came. Their eyes widened so much, it looked like they would pop out of their heads, the boy following their example. Two minutes later, they were rushing pell-mell down the stairs.
Percy groaned. He felt like he had run into a brick wall at sixty miles an hour. His head hurt, his back hurt, his hands... he could go on endlessly. He slowly opened his eyes.
The place looked deserted, apart from a single house that looked like a drunken architect had designed and was leaning at such dangerous angles Percy was sure there was something holding it together. It was dark and the only light came from lights gleaming from the house's many windows.
Right after putting the ring on, he it felt like his body had been forced into a very thin tube. The sensation lasted for a second, and then everything turned white for a split second. After that, he appeared here, with a bang-literally-and immediately collapsed.
Groaning, he forced himself up and looked at the house closely. It was one of the most weirdly constructed buildings he had ever seen, and Percy had been to Olympus and Greece.
Just then, the door opened and two red-haired boys burst out, closely followed by a lanky pre-teen with the same hair. They came up to within ten feet and stopped and eyed him cautiously. The younger boy also came up and stared at Percy like he was some alien, and Percy suppressed a grin.
"Hey, I'm all right, you know. I won't hurt you," said Percy.
The boys looked at one another, as if deciding who would speak next. Then one twin stepped forward.
"Hello, I'm Gred-"
"And I'm Forge-"said the other.
"-And who are you?" they finished.
"I'm a wizard. My father left me today and my mother died years ago. I have no home to return to," said Percy. The Fates had told him that was his cover story and never to tell anyone who he really was. Yeah, right. I'm not in any hurry to be locked up for having delusions. The Mist (yeah, apparently he could use it and it worked in this world as well) would help him if someone became too curious.
"Wait, you're American," said the younger kid with a look of dawning wonder.
"What's New York like?" asked a twin eagerly.
"Where did you live?"
"Is it-"
"Whoa, whoa," said Percy, raising his hands in surrender. "Slow down a little. I'll answer all your questions, but I need a bite to eat first, I'm starving."
They exchanged looks. "Well, we'll introduce you to our mother. If your meeting goes well, you might get more than a bite of food," said the young kid.
"Wait, what's your name?" asked Percy.
"I'm Ron Weasley, and these two are Fred and George, never mind what they call themselves," he said, his tone becoming cool when he spoke of the twins. Percy sensed that he was angry at the two for some reason. Maybe a prank? They reminded him a lot of the Stolls, with the same expressions though their looks were different.
"I'm Percy." The twins shot him an incredulous look and then broke into laughter.
"What's so funny about my name? It's common enough," he asked, a little offended. No one had ever made fun of his name before. Well, yeah, they had compared him to the first Perseus, but that was different.
"Your name's fine, it's just that we have a brother with the same name. However, he's totally different from you-"
"Because he's a selfish, arrogant prig," said Fred.
"We'll call you Percy the Second," said George.
"Okay... let's go now," said Percy, a little distracted by the discovery of his namesake.
"Yeah, let's go," said Fred.
He looked at the door and saw a lopsided sign that he had had missed seeing, saying The Burrow. He saw some boots and-
"What's that?" asked Percy, pointing. It looked like a huge bowl.
"Cauldron, didn't you know?" said Ron without stopping.
"Oh... not really."
George opened the door and Percy saw a small kitchen. It seemed like there was too much stuff in too little space. A radio was in the corner. Wait, a radio? Oh, right this is 1991. On the opposite wall there was a weird clock. Instead of numerals, there were things like 'time for dinner' and 'time for breakfast' written. The mantelpiece was full of books.
Ron looked at the others. "You three stay her. I'll get Mum," he said and ran off towards the stairs.
Percy looked around and dropped onto a chair. His stomach grumbled loudly and he cursed. Hurry up, kid. I'm starving.
Thankfully, Ron came back less than a minute later. "She's coming," he shouted, jumping down the last four steps.
Five seconds later, a woman with a harassed expression came hurrying down the stairs.
"What is it, Ron? I don't have time for this," she said irritably, glaring at the boy.
"It's him, Mum," said Ron, pointing at Percy.
"Wh-"said his mother, only to stop short when she saw Percy.
He stepped forward and cleared his throat, a little nervous. "I'm Percy Jackson. My father left me today and my mother's dead. I don't remember how I ended up here. I've nowhere to go, Mrs Weasley. " Yes, he could be polite sometimes.
She stared at him for a moment. For an awful moment, Percy thought she would turn him away. Then she relaxed.
"Oh, poor boy. You can stay here for the time being. As for you three," she glared at the twins and Ron, looking not unlike a tigress, causing the unlucky ones to pale and squirm, "I'll deal with you later. Off to bed, all of you! Ron, show Percy to your bedroom, he'll be sleeping with you."
"But Mum-"
"No buts. Off to bed!" she glared at Ron, who seemed to shrink.
"Come on then," Ron called and Percy followed, a little amused by how Ron and the twins were squashed by their mother.
Do I need to tell you what to do? I do? All right, then.
