Stories Over Brunch
"...and then, Sonic carried me in his arms as everything exploded around us. We held each other so tightly that I could hear his heartbeat racing in his chest," Amy said, lacing her fingers together. "It was so romantic! Flowers bloomed around us as he put me down, asking if I was okay before he dashed back to finish off Robotnik. I'll never forget what happened!"
Tails quietly sipped his tea. He savored the taste of mint and milk, humming. Swallowing it, he sighed and placed his cup on a coaster Amy had set out for their brunch. "Sonic, um, told me a different version of those events," he said, glancing at her soft green wallpaper.
"What do you mean?" Amy asked, blinking.
Tails noticed her grip on her fork tightened. She cut through a slice of french toast and stuffed it in her mouth, never breaking eye contact with him. He wished Sonic were present to counter Amy's claims, and he also noted that he probably should have kept silent.
"Well, he said that he just put you down outside and ran," he admitted, quickly sipping his tea when he finished.
"Don't you know, Tails? Sonic doesn't fill people in on the real details." She sighed, placing her hand on her cheek. "It's his boyish nature that makes him unable to tell the story the same way I can."
Tails bit his tongue. He didn't quite believe Amy. Her story sounded like a work of romance fiction, the kind he would have found in the bargain bin of a grocery store. Perhaps she had found inspiration on the inner flaps of the novels, as well, to glorify the details such as rose petals falling on them when they escaped Robotnik's clutches.
He finished his tea and swung his legs under the table. Amy continued grinning and sighing to herself as she poured another generous helping of maple syrup on her french toast. He hadn't touched his pancakes and suspected they were now cold. He had been too dumbfounded by Amy's romanticized storytelling about Sonic that he had forgotten to eat, his appetite now lost.
"Oh, Tails, it was the most wonderful day of my life," she gushed, slipping her fingers around her cup. Extending her pinky finger, she took a slice of lemon and squeezed the juice into her tea. "He was far more romantic than I anticipated. My cards could have never predicted his gentlemanly nature."
"Right, um, I'm sure Sonic made quite an impression on you," he offered, rubbing his neck.
"'Impression?' He left more than that!" She giggled and leaned her head back, setting her hands over her heart. "He won me over, Tails! I never thought that I would fall in love so quickly before, but here we are!"
As Tails tried to hide his grimace, Amy frowned. She straightened in her seat and looked at the clock on the wall. It was four minutes past eleven, and in thirty seconds, Sonic would have been five minutes late to brunch.
"That hedgehog is playing hard to get," Amy stated, twirling her finger around a loose quill.
Tails clicked his tongue and carved a butter knife through his pancake. "Oh, well, Sonic does like to be fashionably late."
"He does?" She jerked her head toward him, causing Tails to flinch. She shot to her feet, her chair clattering behind her. Not bothering to steady the chair, it fell as she cried, "That explains why he left me waiting until the very last minute when Metal Sonic kidnapped me! Oh, that's so dramatic, so cool, so Sonic!"
Tails itched his ear and cut through the pancake again. Biting it, he scrunched his nose at the soggy taste, but he supposed it was better than complaining. He wasn't sure if he wanted to interrupt Amy while she was rambling on about Sonic, as that might have led to dismal consequences. After all, her Piko Piko Hammer rested against the table.
But the joy in her voice still made Tails' mouth turn upward in a smile. He couldn't deny that Sonic had positively impacted her. Sonic had the same effect on him, allowing him to try to encourage himself. And if Amy wanted to pursue a friendship with Sonic just like he had, then he wanted to try to become friends with her as well, even if it meant enduring her rose-tinted misrepresentations.
Taking the kettle, Tails poured himself another cup of tea. Adding in a dollop of honey from a small packet, Tails chuckled as Amy fantasized about her eventual wedding with Sonic. And when Sonic arrived in the middle of Amy describing his tuxedo, Tails burst into laughter when he darted back out the front door.
