Hello everyone and welcome to a new work of mine. For those who know me, I've written more for Pokémon in the past, though I've also written one story for DBZ that I dropped rather early on. Though, for this one it'll be a bit different. It'll be an AU of sorts of the Buu Saga. Though that also means everything pre-Buu has occurred like in canon. Either way, I hope you all give this story a chance and hopefully it interests you enough to see it through to the end.
Chapter 1: First Day
Finish him! Do it now!
The words rang through Gohan's head as the sight of Cell being devoured played once more. The memory appeared to never leave his mind, no matter how many years had passed; the boy seemingly reliving it in his dreams from time to time. Though they weren't always a negative feeling for him, the catastrophic wasteland appearing in his mind as its seemingly flat location was devoured. A crater sat where the pristine ring had been previously as Gohan felt his body fall towards. The thought of his father filled his dream. Despite his father's demise at the hands of Cell and Gohan's own arrogance, the boy knew he didn't hold it against him and if he knew his father then he was off in otherworld fighting who knows what powerful opponent.
He was just about to relive the memory of what his father had spoken to everyone on the Lookout, those words having a somber effect on them. It had been a shock to everyone when Goku declared he wanted to remain dead, especially for Gohan. His knees had grown weak as they shook, the breath in his lungs gone as the boy struggled to comprehend his decision at first. But the way his father delivered it, the childlike wonder at the thought of traversing Otherworld along with the pride he held for Gohan made it easy for the boy to understand. Goku knew that if anything were to happen, the Earth would be in competent hands with Gohan around and his son understood and respected that decision.
Though, the words never arrived, Gohan instead being awoken by what felt like a sack of bricks. An object slammed against his chest, the first impact making the now teenager gag. Spit flew from his mouth, eyes shooting wide open to see a small child with admiration in his eyes staring back at him. Gohan groaned for a moment before pushing his younger brother off of his body, the boy landing against the wood floor with a thud. He quietly sat up, the blankets falling off the side of his bed as a yawn escaped from his mouth. His body stiff, an aftereffect of all his studying lately. He slowly raised his arms over his head before leaning backwards as his back cracked slightly.
"Goten, what have I told you about waking me up that way?" he said. The young boy on the ground laughed playfully, not an ounce of ill intention present. Gohan knew it wasn't possible for his brother to commit any acts of poor behavior unless Trunks were around, those two kids always getting into trouble with each other.
"Sorry, Gohan," Goten said. The boy's face sagged down towards the floor, his hair which was a striking image of their late father's drooped with it as Gohan heard a sniffling sound. To his surprise, Goten looked ready to absolutely start balling his eyes out. "It's just...mom said to wake you and so I started to sprint up here. But when I ran around the corner I couldn't stop and so I thought to do a front flip only to mistime it and land on you."
Gohan's mouth fell open slightly, the boy unsure if his brother just had a poor control over his body and balance or if Goten had perhaps picked up a few habits from Trunks after all. The young boy just rubbed his stomach, the pain subsiding as a rumble erupted from it instead. The smell of fresh cooked eggs swam into his nostrils, the aroma causing him to ignore the current conversation.
"Uh huh," he replied, the boy wiping the drool from his mouth. Gohan grabbed a set of clean clothes from his dresser, nothing too fancy just a white shirt, black vest and brown pants. He figured they would suffice for the day as he quickly tossed them onto his body. The clothes were a bit baggy though Gohan preferred that as he slipped on a pair of dress shoes his mother had bought him for special occasions. He wandered down what felt like an eternal hall, his nose tempted by the eggs which were followed by the smell of fresh pancakes. The boy's stomach now raged with hunger, a battle going on inside of it as the organ tried to decide which food it wanted more. While the mighty showdown raged on, Gohan merely entered his family's kitchen to see a plate already waiting for him.
His mother stood there waiting, a soft smile present on her face as she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. Gohan could tell today was tough for his mother; it being his first day attending a school with others after being homeschooled his entire life. "I figured you would like a nice breakfast before school. Have to keep your energy up with all the studying you'll be doing."
"Thanks mom! It smells great!" he said. The boy wasted no time as he dove into the plate, devouring its contents in a matter of minutes as the once stacked pile of pancakes were turned to crumbs. The eggs likewise were swallowed in no time flat, the entire plate looking as if it just came from the dishwasher as saliva sat on it. The liquid created a coating over the plate, Gohan looking sheepishly towards his mother as he rubbed the back of his head. Chi-Chi wanted to say something, her slightly agape mouth telling Gohan as such, but instead she took the plate and placed it within the sink before handing Gohan his backpack.
"Listen, you should take Nimbus to school. It'll be safer than flying into town," she said. The boy nodded happily as he took the bag, slinging it over his shoulder. With a few small steps he made his way out the front door.
The early morning sun shinned down onto his face, the rays blinding him for but a moment. The wind blew slightly as the trees rustled from it. Their scent entered his nostrils as his mother stood beside him. Gohan could tell she was apprehensive about him leaving, but this decision had been one they both agreed on. She had taught him everything she could, it was time for him to attend a school with people his own age.
With a simple yell of "Flying Nimbus" Gohan leapt upwards, the magical cloud appearing as he landed softly among it. Despite all the years it had been a part of their family, the yellow cloud was just as comfortable as the first time he rode atop it. The memory of his father taking him on a ride caused a smile to cross his face.
"Now I don't want you to fly too fast. And don't forget to call me once you get into the city," Chi-Chi stated, the woman clutching at her outfit. Gohan laughed for a moment as the thought of this trip worrying his mother. It wasn't like he hadn't traveled through space or fought killer androids. But despite that he agreed to call as Nimbus flew off into the distance.
Eventually his small mountain home vanished as the boy enjoyed the trek. For anyone else they would have needed to rent an apartment to attend school this far away, but Gohan knew he had the luxury of both flight and the Nimbus. The pristine environment surrounded Gohan as his trusted cloud rose above the trees, their branches appearing to wave goodbye as they dashed ahead. Rivers and streams danced along the landscape as a few houses dotted the area, the citizens out here beginning their days. A few cars drove off towards the local village while others went out to their fields, Gohan patting the cloud as it sped up. The wind brushed through his hair as the boy enjoyed the cool breeze. It wasn't every day he rode Nimbus, though he figured it would occur more often now that he commuted into school.
Eventually the lush vegetation gave way to a desert, though it didn't last long as the boy crossed it quickly. The rocky terrain immediately giving way to paved roads as the sound of hovercars erupted into Gohan's ears. The boy looked around, surprised that they were already on the outskirts of the town. With another light tap of the cloud he leapt from it, the boy landing softly against the paved road. The Nimbus just continued on its way as it performed a U-Turn, the cloud flying off back towards home. Gohan watched for a moment, the boy waving goodbye to his family's trusted cloud; a gift passed on by his late father. Soon the yellow cloud exited his sight as Gohan adjusted the bag that rested on his shoulder before making his way further into the city.
He noted the different stores that weren't open yet, most of them not available out where he lived. Though he didn't mind, he honestly didn't need a lot of these stores. Coffee shops and restaurants made up the buildings as the small local businesses gave way to department stores and supermarket chains, Gohan noting how these were already open. Customers passed by him, Gohan barely drawing any interest from the passersby as he continued on.
He made his way to the end of the street, waiting until the hovercars came to a stop before crossing. The sound of feet bombarded his eardrums, the soles of their shoes banging against the ground as people ran away from the direction he needed to head. Gohan tilted his head at the sudden excitement, sirens entering the vicinity as police cars sped by. Going along his route, Gohan quickly came upon a standoff as what appeared to be a group of robbers held sacks of money along with a hostage as the police formed a line. Shots rained across the street as the officers hid behind their vehicles, Gohan looking on with disdain as the bullets ricocheted off the cars.
"More criminals? Something like this was happening when I came to the city for my entrance exams. What's with this town," he sighed out before lowering his bag. He didn't want to get involved in it, but from the looks of it the cops were in no position to bring a stop to the robbery. And until it all finished there was no possible way for him to make it to school. "Got to do this quick."
With one deep breathe Gohan readied himself, energy surging through his body as he made sure to keep it under control. He didn't want to permanently damage these guys, just knock them out so he could be on his way. A sphere of Ki formed within his hand before it expanded outwards, the flash blinding everyone in the vicinity as he made his move. Even if he couldn't see them, Gohan could feel their energy and pinpointed those he had to dispose of. His hands moved quickly, chopping the two men with the hostage behind their necks as the sound of their bodies falling to the ground alerted him to move on.
He moved along the line, knocking one of the gunmen onto the ground with a swift kick before disposing of his sidearm. Finally came the last two members who had been firing bullets when Gohan made his move. Gohan snapped their guns in half before his palms struck their chests. A grunt could be heard as their bodies collapsed onto the ground, the sound of their stolen goods joining them as Gohan knew his time was almost up. Without wasting a second he took off, vanishing back to his spectator's location as his blinding flash ended.
"Now don't try anything fu-" one of the officers began to say. His words trailed off upon seeing each of the thugs either knocked unconscious or battered and bruised on the ground. The hostage ran off immediately back into the bank as the officers rushed forward. One by one the thugs were arrested as Gohan stood patiently. The officers continued to talk amongst themselves, citizens coming back out of their homes and businesses as they talked about the situation that had just concluded.
"Chief what happened? There was a flash of light and then this happened."
"Beats me, but whoever did this we owe them a round of applause."
With a short glance to his wristwatch Gohan noticed that he would still manage to make it on time to school. Though there was a strange Ki signature that made him feel a bit of anxiety. As if the individual had seen his actions.
"Mind explaining what you saw happen?" The voice sounded agitated, Gohan turning towards it to see a girl about half a foot shorter than him. Her pigtails blew in the wind as Gohan noted the small badge that was pinned to her white shirt: it was the exact same one he had on at the moment, the orange star unmistakable as it rested atop a green and white background. No doubt she must have went to his school.
Got to make sure I don't slip up. This could be bad for me if people learn I'm the one responsible for this.
"Hello? Are you going to answer me? What happened here, this is clearly not police work."
Gohan blinked from the questioning, the girl placing her hands on her hips as she stepped closer. Gohan instinctively took a step back as sweat formed on his forehead, the girl only taking a step forward as she glared into him. The half-Saiyan wondered if she perhaps knew of his actions and now wanted an answer. He knew he needed an excuse and fast, though before he could speak it appeared that she was called over by one of the officers. Dropping her anger, the girl jogged over to join the police force as Gohan sighed in relief. He felt he had just dodged a bullet as he walked past the scene of the crime.
Though as he walked along the rest of his route, a familiar energy entered the back of his head. A smile formed on his face, Gohan recognizing it immediately as he approached the large building that was his school. Despite only entering it twice (once to register and the other to take his entrance exam), he still had a good understanding of the building's layout. While students entered through the large glass door entrance, Gohan made his way around the back of the school. Passing along the side of the school, Gohan noted the many sports fields that were on the campus grounds. From the baseball field to the soccer field with what appeared to be a track built into it, Gohan appeared to care little for it as the energy source grew closer.
Finding a side entrance to the school, Gohan entered as it appeared that some students were already in this section of the school. The boy felt confused as he assumed it would have been empty at this point of the day, especially since only the locker rooms were in this section. Instead groups of male students passed by Gohan, some snickering at the boy and his baggy clothing as he was unaware of their hidden teasing. Instead he continued towards the source of the energy. He passed by both the boys and girls locker rooms as well as the gymnasium and the gym teacher's office until he came to what appeared to be a small room. Written on tape that hung on the door read "security" as Gohan chuckled to himself.
His hand grasped the doorknob firmly, turning it as he came face to face with an old friend. Sitting at what appeared to be a makeshift desk was none other than Yamcha, the former desert bandit spinning a hat around his finger as he smirked at Gohan.
"Finally found me. I've been reading your energy signature ever since you landed in the city." The old friend stood up, tossing his hat to the side as it landed atop a filing cabinet. Sitting in a chair off to the side was Puar, the shapeshifting cat appearing to read the morning newspaper. Throwing an arm around Gohan's shoulders, Yamcha let a small laugh escape from his mouth. "So, you finally decided to interact with people your own age?"
"You could say that. Truthfully my mother feels that it would be best for my education to study under someone else. She believes that she's taught me everything she could."
"Sounds like Chi-Chi. I remember Krillin telling me how she made you take schoolwork on the trip to Namek to resurrect us. But man have you grown! It's been what? Three, four years since we last saw each other?" the former bandit joked. Gohan laughed at that old memory, as Yamcha made his way back to his "desk". The boy wondered just what kind of work he actually accomplished since his desk was filled with junk, some being confiscated items from what must have been students.
"So what gives, Yamcha. Why are you working at a school of all places?"
"Truthfully I'm just as surprised as you are. I guess after you die it's kind of hard to resume a baseball career," Yamcha joked, the man pointing at a few newspapers hanging on the wall. Gohan could make out one that questioned where he vanished to. "Unfortunately the team wasn't too excited about me vanishing for as long as I did. I lived off my contract money until recently when I noticed the school was looking for a security officer. I applied and they ended up taking me.
"Guess it doesn't hurt to be a former martial artist," Yamcha finished saying, his body moving into the familiar stance of his Wolf Fang Fist. His chair fell over onto the ground, Yamcha now standing. He shot a small punch forward, Gohan feeling the breeze from it as Yamcha picked the folding chair back up. "Though I can't complain, nothing happens on campus thanks to the police in this city."
"Really? They didn't appear too impressive earlier."
"You'll see soon enough."
A ringing sound ended their conversation, Gohan looking at his watch as he realized he was now behind schedule. In fact, he had to get to the opposite of the building within five minutes or he'd be late for his first day. Bowing slightly, Gohan apologized to Yamcha for his need to leave.
"I'd love to catch up, but if my mother learns I'm late on my first day there won't be any Dragon Balls that can save me."
"Don't sweat it, kid, I understand. Your mother can be a scary one. We can catch up another time."
"Thanks," Gohan replied as he made his way for the door. Pausing, he turned on his heel to look at the former bandit once more before leaning back into the room. "Oh, and if you could keep everything between us a secret that would be appreciated. I don't need my classmates being freaked out by me."
"He won't mention anything, Gohan. I'll make sure of it," Puar stated. The feline smiled at Gohan as the boy ran out of the room.
His feet pounded against the stairs, Gohan rushing through the new location as he bounced up two stairs at a time. Entering the next floor, Gohan noted the cafeteria and traced his way back through the one quick tour he had taken previously. Based on his current location, he had to go up one more floor and about five classrooms down before he got to his room. Fortunately there were no students in the hallways as Gohan picked up his speed. Papers flew behind him as his bag smacked against his body until he finally made it to his designated room.
Taking a breather, Gohan rested his hands upon his knees as he tried to fake being tired. A few drops of sweat fortunately formed as a hand rested itself upon his shoulder. It felt welcoming to Gohan as he looked up, an older gentleman standing next to him dressed in a blue suit with a white shirt underneath. A red bowtie rested on the collar of his shirt as he held a few books under his free arm. Gohan remembered meeting him when he had taken his entrance exam.
"It's always tough on your first day, but don't worry it isn't as scary as the movies make it out to be," the man stated. He adjusted his glasses as Gohan questioned just what he meant by that. The boy was honestly confused as the man continued to talk. "Just wait here for a moment. I'll introduce you to the class and then come in."
Gohan nodded as the older gentleman entered the room. Immediately he could hear the sound of chairs scrapping against the tiled floor. Feet smacked against the ground as what he assumed was students rushing to their seats. The teacher's voice echoed out into the hallway, Gohan standing there unsure of what was to come.
"Good morning, class. Today we have a transfer student joining our class, so please make him feel welcome. Don't be shy, you can come in and introduce yourself."
Gohan took that as his cue to enter now, the boy taking the last few steps into the classroom as he shut the door behind him. Standing up at the front of the class, Gohan felt slightly nervous as all eyes were on him. He honestly found it easier to stare down the Ginyu Force or even Freeza again instead of what were now his classmates. Clearing his throat, he began to speak.
"Um, hello, I'm Gohan. It's a pleasure to meet you."
The teacher motioned for Gohan to make his way further in, the man coughing for a moment as he opened one of the books he had been holding. "Gohan actually aced all his entrance exams, so hopefully he can rub off on some of you. I swear, public education means nothing to some of you students. It's nothing more than a time to socialize.
"Now, Gohan, please sit wherever you feel comfortable."
The half-Saiyan nodded at that, though he now wished that the man hadn't mentioned his perfect scores. Especially since it felt like some in the class now held a grudge against him. A few eyes were marked on him as Gohan could feel the difference in energy signatures between the time he had entered the room to now. Even some of the students were mocking his scores, though Gohan paid them no attention. Instead, it was one student who caught his attention as she stood up.
"There's a seat over here, new kid." The blonde girl continued to wave until she felt Gohan had seen her action, the boy climbing the stairs as he found himself in the second to last row. Unfortunately for him, he quickly noticed who was sitting next to the girl that invited him there. Planted in the seat next to the blonde was the girl from the robbery that morning. She appeared to only have slight interest in Gohan, a pencil being rolled between her fingers as the teacher down below began attendance.
"Thank you," Gohan stated, taking his place at the long table. He rested his bag against the back of his seat as he pulled his books out. One of the students down below appeared to have a question for the teacher, Gohan not having a chance to pay attention as the girl next to him continued to speak.
"No problem. My name's Erasa," the girl stated happily. Gohan nodded as she then pointed to the two students next to her. "And these two are Videl and Sharpner. They may look like sourpusses but they're actually nice people."
"Erasa, don't introduce me to the nerd," the blond boy stated. Gohan assumed this was Sharpner, the boy flexing his muscles as if that were to intimidate Gohan. The boy just waved his words off, trying to turn back towards the class only for the blond boy to speak once more. "So tell us about yourself, Brains. We're curious; it isn't everyday we get a transfer student. Where'd you come from?"
"Oh, well you see...I was actually homeschooled by my mother up until now. Though technically I also had tutors, but they followed her curriculum," Gohan explained as he rubbed the back of his head. A sense of nervousness ran through his mind, he could feel that Videl was suspicious of him still. No doubt an effect of the events from this morning. Though he hoped she would have forgotten about them by now, or at least forgot that he had been there. There was no such luck as she tapped her pencil against the wooden desk.
"You're the guy from the bank. That's why you seem so familiar." Gohan nodded slowly in agreement to the statement.
"You mean the one where The Blur took place?" Erasa asked as Gohan tilted his head in confusion. Had they already come up with a name for whatever went down this morning? Opening his mouth, the boy asked a small question.
"The Blur?"
"You haven't heard about it? It's only been all over the news," Erasa began to say as she pulled her cellphone out. Hitting a few buttons she pulled up an article as it flashed onto her screen. Gohan skipped whatever was written as he saw an image that must have been caught by the security cameras of the bank. While there were no defining features of him, they appeared to have caught at least his heat signature.
"They're calling this vigilante The Blur because he moved so fast even the cameras couldn't catch him. They say he swooped in and disposed of the robbers before anyone knew what happened."
"Well that's kind of interesting," Gohan lied. A nervous chuckle escaped from his mouth as he felt Videl continue to stare at him. The girl didn't appear ready to drop their conversation from earlier in the morning, her glare glued onto Gohan as the boy tried to shrink away into his chair.
"So, Gohan, mind telling me what happened this morning? Now that you can't run off."
"I-I didn't run off. Remember? You got called away so I decided to come to school. Besides, everything moved too fast for me to see it."
"Right..." Videl mused. Gohan let an internal sigh out, he hoped that it was believable enough though Videl still appeared suspicious of him. Gohan wondered if this would be a reoccurring thing between them as he could tell the girl was not one to drop a topic until she was satisfied. "So what business did you have in that area? There are faster ways to get to school than heading through that section of the city."
"There are?" Gohan asked. This time it wasn't a lie, he truly had no idea of different routes since that had been the only one he had taken every time he entered Satan City.
"Videl, stop making the nerd worry so much. Besides, the video showed those guys dropping like flies. This string bean couldn't hurt them even if he tried."
Videl murmured something under her breath at that, Gohan thankful for the muscle clad blond. He didn't appear to be the brightest and Gohan felt that his ways of thinking had helped him avoid a rather uncomfortable conversation about his commute. He still had no idea how the other students would react to him riding into town on a cloud.
The beginning of the day appeared to go by slowly for Gohan as his first period class was stuff he had already studied under his mother. It wasn't that advanced calculus was easy for him, it was just that he had already learned it about five years ago and had moved onto more difficult areas of study. Though to his surprise it appeared that a few other students were able to keep pace with the teacher, one being Videl who managed to answer the questions on the board in what Gohan assumed was an above average time based on the rest of the class.
Second period had been a little better as science class allowed him to do something he had never done with his mother which was chemistry. Or rather actual lab work. He had studied from textbooks that covered topics such as chemistry but with where their home was located he never had the option to work on different labs. While there were times he went to Bulma's and played around in her lab, this felt different as he was more hands on and wasn't being told directly by Bulma on how to handle the different chemicals and solutions. Though as the bell rang at the end of second period, Gohan was surprised to see everyone rise out of their seats. A few made a quick break for the door as they left their belongings behind.
"Where's everyone headed?" Gohan asked as Sharpner, Erasa and Videl rose out of their own seats.
"It's time for the best period of the day," Sharpner stated as he stretched slightly. The boy ran a hand through his long hair, Gohan confused at just what the boy meant. The boy's next words answered any concerns or questions Gohan had. "It's time for gym."
Gohan blinked in confusion as his mother had told him most people hated gym class. Though he was in no desire to argue as he rose out of his own seat. He reached into his bag to grab a spare shirt before following his three classmates. The boy made his way back through the hallways he had raced through until finally coming back onto the bottom level of the school. Walking past Yamcha's office, Gohan sensed that the man was fast asleep and wondered if this was a normal procedure for him or if the former bandit felt a little too relaxed with Gohan on the school grounds. Regardless, Gohan continued to walk forward as Videl and Erasa entered one door while Sharpner went into the next. Gohan followed the muscular boy as he entered a room where a putrid smell hung over them.
It reminded Gohan of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with his father before they took baths, the stench none other than that of sweaty guys. Clothes littered the floor as Gohan stepped cautiously around them. Conversations broke out amongst the different groups, Gohan able to pick up pieces of them as the guys talked about different things. The topics ranged from sports to girls to the latest movie that played on tv last night. There was even a chat about Mr. Satan that got Gohan amused. Though the boy ignored it as he wandered into the back of the locker room.
Now alone, he switched into his yellow shirt that he swam in. He had figured that it would be best to hide his muscular body by wearing clothes too big for him, especially since he didn't need any questions brought up about him. Once ready, Gohan made his way outside and back into the hallway where he noticed some of the students were heading out the door he had entered earlier in the morning. Following them, the class made their way out to the fields that stretched across the campus. Gohan noted how some students ran off for the baseball field, gloves and bats in their hands while others raced towards the soccer field with a ball. Games immediately broke out as Gohan stood there wondering what he should do.
"You must be Gohan," a loud, raspy voice stated. Gohan turned to see a rather tall and buff man walking out of the school. He wore a black wifebeater as it showed off his rather large shoulders, though Gohan figured the guy wasn't much tougher than Sharpner at best. "Today is actually the last day of our current subject before switching to a new one tomorrow. You're free to do whatever you want, there's baseball and soccer, though I feel you'd like the latter more."
"Is it alright if I just do a light jog around the track?" Gohan asked. The teacher nodded in agreement to that as the boy thanked him. He figured the teacher would have accepted it since games had already begun, though truthfully Gohan just didn't want to accidently reveal any of his hidden strength. Instead, he began his light jog, going around the track several times at a decent pace until he noticed eyes were latched onto him.
Those who had been playing soccer or baseball stopped, a majority of the class surprised at Gohan since he had yet to stop since class began. Glancing at his watch, Gohan realized that he had gone a good forty or so minutes without stopping. He hadn't even realized it, especially since this was next to nothing when compared to the training he had been through his entire life. But based on the reactions of his classmates, it left them confused or maybe in awe. He couldn't really tell.
Slowing his pace down, Gohan began to walk instead of jog as he pretended to be out of breath. Fortunately class came to an end shortly after that, the boy rushing back into the locker room before anyone else and changing back into his regular attire. Switching shirts, he placed the white undershirt on neatly before his black vest slipped over his body. Without a word the boy made his way back outside of the looker room just as his classmates entered. Some called out to the young boy but Gohan ignored them for the time being. Instead he made his way back to the classroom where he waited in silence.
The first few to return shouldn't have surprised him. And yet he was still slightly shocked when Videl, Erasa and Sharpner entered the room as they each took their seats. Though it was Sharpner that surprised the boy the most as the muscle clad boy leaned across the long desk to look at him.
"So, Gohan, have you ever thought of taking part in sports? Your endurance is crazy."
"Is it? I guess having to run errands for my mom all day helped with it," Gohan lied. He scratched at the side of his cheek as he noticed Videl nodding in agreement with Sharpner. Even Erasa appeared impressed as she leaned back in her chair.
"You know, you'd be perfect for the cross-country team or even the track team. They were looking for a long-distance runner," Erasa pointed out.
"She's right. With some training you might be able to even beat Videl in a race," Sharpner added in. He immediately grunted in pain as Videl elbowed him in the side. Gohan chuckled nervously as the girl repositioned herself. Clearly she did not like being outdone.
"I'd love to join a club, but I don't have time to. You see, I have a long commute to the 439 Mountain District."
"Did you say the 439 Mountain District?" Videl asked, her hands planted on the table. Gohan felt the vibrations from the impact, his pencil rolling slightly from it as Videl stood up. "That's got to be what? Five hundred miles at least?"
Gohan shrugged at the question, unsure of the exact mileage from his house to the city. Not that it mattered since if he could just fly into town it would only take a short amount of time. As it was, Nimbus was faster than most jet-copters but it wasn't as fast as Gohan when he flew himself. "I think. I don't really count the miles."
"That's crazy. That's gotta be around seven hours of a commute," Erasa added. "You don't drive do you?"
"You could say I fly. So it doesn't take as long."
"Brains has a jet-copter? You'll have to show it to us sometime. Maybe take us for a ride, though it probably is nothing compared to mine."
Gohan tried to respond, but before the words could exit his mouth the class grew silent. Walking in was their latest teacher, the boy noting how they appeared rather laid back compared to the others. Not that his previous ones were tough. The man stood in front of the class, his books resting on the podium as he coughed slightly. Unlike the others, this teacher appeared to be respected by the students as they gave him their undivided attention.
"Good afternoon to all of you," the teacher began as he marked the attendance. There seemed to be a slight feeling of joy in the room as Gohan looked around. The sound of feet tapping against the ground rocked around his ears as his eyes picked up on a slight jittery sensation between the students.
"Now, before we can get back to our groups, we must solve a slight conundrum. I've been told a new student has joined our class; and so we must find him a group to join. Any volunteers?"
Gohan watched as several hands shot up into the air, the boy unsurprised that several groups would want him to help them. Though the one that had surprised him was just how fast Sharpner's hand flew up. His surprise was shared with Erasa and Videl, though it appeared it wasn't out of them not wanting Gohan to be in their group but rather Sharpner's desire to work with the boy. Fortunately for him, the teacher selected his request.
"And why should Gohan join your group, Mr. Sharpner? Especially since Miss Videl is already there."
"You see, we're the smallest group," Sharpner began to say. His hand pointed at both Videl and Erasa as a coy smile crossed his face. "And to be honest, at times it's just me and Erasa since Videl gets called away. It's too much for just two of us. So if Gohan joined it would even our numbers out and help make this a better project."
The teacher sighed, but no argument left his mouth. Instead, Gohan watched as he wrote something down before looking up at the half-Saiyan. "Are you alright with that group, son?"
Gohan nodded as he realized he lacked a say in any of this. A few of the other students groaned in defeat, Sharpner flashing a smile as he did a slight fist pump. The boy appeared rather excited, as if he had just won the lottery. Only instead of a million Zeni he had won an easy A.
"Mind explaining what you're so happy about?" Videl asked, her arms crossed as her eyes appeared to shoot daggers at Sharpner. The boy stopped his slight celebration upon seeing her gaze, his body slinking back into his chair. "If you think you'll have less work to do because Gohan is here you're mistaken. He isn't going to get you an easy A. You'll have to put the work in too."
Erasa laughed at that, Sharpner complaining slightly as Gohan overheard him mention that he had to keep his workout routine going. Though Gohan was a bit curious as to what the project entailed. Fortunately Videl came to his rescue, the girl leaning across Erasa as she looked at him. For a moment he swore that she was about to question him, but instead her words had nothing to do about him but instead with the project.
"We're covering ancient myths and all that junk. You know, alien invasions, old legends, mystical phenomena. All that junk."
"So what's our topic then?" Gohan asked. He looked at his three groupmates though they all remained silent with their own reaction. Videl shot a gaze away towards the ground while Sharpner ignored it altogether, leaning back in his chair. It was only Erasa who gave a slightly nervous chuckle who answered him.
"We don't exactly have one." Gohan blinked at the words, unsure if he heard her correctly. He noticed that the other groups were already getting to work, some of them pulling devices out to start researching while others dug into their books. One group however appeared to just be goofing around though Gohan figured they were in a better situation than his group.
"None of us can find a topic that interests any of us. Or we do find something but there isn't enough information to make a full presentation out of it."
"Really? There should be something out there," Gohan mused. The others gave no answer to him as the class continued to go by. Time ticked away as Gohan noticed his group pretending to do work, the teacher himself uninterested in the class as he read a book.
A thought soon came to Gohan's mind as to a potential topic but kept it a secret for now, instead willing to bring it up tomorrow if no one else presented an idea.
Eventually the final bell rang as Gohan noticed that the students were now packing up. Glancing at his watch the boy noted that school was actually over. He hadn't even paid attention to the time all day and yet it felt like the day flew by. Placing his belongings into his bag, Gohan got ready to leave. The others appeared to mind him no business and so he got on his way until he was now wandering down the hallways. Commotion from the different classrooms spilled into the hallways as the area became flooded with students.
Gohan had little difficulty in maneuvering through them, weaving in and out of the groups of friends until he was finally out the front door. Stretching, he took in the sunlight that shinned down on him before breaking into a small jog towards the city outskirts. He wanted to go a bit faster but had to remind himself to not overdo it. Or at least until he was out of sight.
Passing down the streets he noted how busier they were compared to the morning as people were out doing their shopping or just going for a walk late in the day. After a few minutes he came upon the bank from earlier in the day, the police still there as they were talking to one of the tellers. Gohan felt a desire to stop and listen but knew it was better to keep going. Especially if Videl was anywhere in the area. He didn't need her to act anymore suspicious of him.
Picking his pace up slightly, Gohan made it out towards the edge of the town. Cupping his hands around his mouth, he called out to the sky.
"Flying Nimbus!"
His voice echoed outwards and towards the desolate landscape. The only ones who saw where the voice came from were wild animals who lived across the grassy plains. Silence fell atop the area like a blanket only to be broken up by a familiar noise. Zipping from off in the distance was the golden cloud Gohan knew so well, a small trail left behind as it flew down to Gohan.
Thanking the cloud he hopped onto it, his mode of transportation zipping back towards their home as Gohan thought about the day. He figured he had made a few mistakes, but nothing too serious. Though he knew he had to be a bit more secretive with his powers, or at least be a bit better when it came to using them. Fortunately he had made it through his first day. And yet he found himself exhausted despite the relatively simple day.
Mountains quickly came into view as the boy realized Nimbus was moving as fast as it could. A few pterosaurs flew by, Gohan waving to them as he recognized the family. He was amazed at just how much the baby of their family had grown, though it was still too young to fly on its own. The baby waved back to Gohan as its parents roared out in excitement upon seeing the boy. The pterosaurs flew off into the distance as a few houses quickly dotted the landscape.
Trucks moved along the dirt road as the boy saw that the market was still open as Gohan wondered if his mother had visited it yet. Patting Nimbus, he motioned for the cloud to head straight home as it picked up speed once more. Nimbus took a slight turn as they passed over a forest now, the cloud spinning as Gohan laughed out in joy. Slowly they approached a small home off in the distance as Gohan leapt from the Flying Nimbus. He landed nimbly as the grass moved softly under his feet.
He continued to move forward until the door to the cozy home opened, the smell of dinner entering his nostrils as he drooled slightly. His enjoyment however was dashed upon a concerned question being asked.
"What's this about a Blur that showed up in Satan City today?"
And this brings us to the end of chapter 1. Hopefully you all enjoyed it even if it was mostly setup for things to come later. I promise that the rest of the story won't be as slow and will have some rather interesting events. Or at least I feel they're interesting.
