Part of Sam+Jack Ship Day 2021 Challenge: 'I thought we could go for dinner. You know, together.'

Please review!

Samantha Carter walked out of the bathroom, brushing her long blond hair. She was dressed in her grey air force tank top and shorts of the same color. The weather was fairly warm, so no real nightdress was needed even if they leave the window open throughout the night.

"You know what I found out when I looked in my diary today?" She said to the man sitting on the king-size bed. He turned to her when she spoke, beckoning her to sit next to him.

"For crying out loud, did I forget another anniversary?" Jack sighed, trying to read the expression on her face. She didn't seem mad or disappointed. He reached out and tugged one renegade lock behind her ear. She had the most beautiful eyes and they were staring right at him. He snaked one arm around her shoulders and brought her closer. Who was he kidding, she had the most beautiful everything. He still couldn't believe she wanted to be with him. What had he ever done to deserve this happiness? Oy, better not go there…

"No- and you know I don't care about those things." She placed one little kiss on his cheek and laughed. "Plus you always make it up to me…"

"You got that right…" He used his other hand to push her on the bed and then he lied next to her. Running his fingers gently across her cheek, he looked into her eyes and pressed his lips to hers. She let out the loveliest little moan in response.

"Jaaack." She whispered when they separated to get some air.

"I love it when you say my name like that." He held himself just above her body, just lightly touching her, so she wouldn't be uncomfortable with all his weight on her.

"Oh, really?" She put both her hands against his chest and playfully rolled him over on his back. "Jaaack." She moaned and it went straight into his groin. It was so good he almost forgot how exhausted he was. Almost, but not quite. They were both too exhausted for anything to happen. And recently she did not feel very well, so there was that too. He groaned into the kiss, feeling her hands caressing his body. Damn, she was stunning and tasted so nice.

She raised herself on her elbows while cradling his lap and held his gaze. "Getting back to my original point - you know what happened twenty years ago?"

"You were born?" He said with a smirk and earned himself a light pat on a shoulder.

"I'm serious, Jack."

"Me too. You're so cute." He gently pushed into her hands which made her fall onto him. "Hmm…"

"Hey!" She gasped right into his ear as she landed. Then she ran her fingers through his hair, kissing him the whole time. "You are cute too." She chuckled. "But what I wanted to say is that it's been twenty years since I first stepped through the gate. Can you believe that?"

"Really?"

"Well, since you pushed me through, but you get the idea."

"You cannot still be mad about that. You know, I didn't lie when I said I adored you already." He brushed her hair out of the way and kissed her again, this time deeply and passionately.

"Come on, the first time we met wasn't great either. General Hammond practically had to force me onto you…Wait, what?" She slid off his body to the side, keeping their bodies in contact nonetheless.

"A few seconds before I pushed you when you went all 'you'll like me when you get to know me'. You don't remember that?"

"I do, but… You've known me for about a day by that point."

"Yes, but you proved to be prepared, capable and other things I'll never tell you."

"What?"

"Because I was your superior officer at the time."

"Oh."

He ran his hands slowly up her legs, slipping them underneath her top. He watched her reaction closely as she closed her eyes and enjoyed hid caresses. "You're so beautiful." He whispered.

Her eyelids fluttered open to look into his eyes. There were so many feelings mirrored in them, those amazing blue orbs that always lightened up the room.

"Let's go out tomorrow. I'll take you someplace nice to celebrate all the years we've known each other."

"That makes us sound really old, Jack. And we already agreed on a team night."

"But I thought we could go for dinner. You know, together. I'm sure the guys won't mind."

"Teal'c is gating in just to see us. And Daniel will be driving for who knows how long to come here. We can go out some other time."

Jack hissed in annoyance, but didn't stop planting light kisses on her right arm. "Is there anything I can do to change your mind?" He asked seductively, while making his way from her shoulder to her chest.

"Jack?"

The tone of his voice made him stop his administration at once. He backed away a little so he could take in all the little clues on her face. She wasn't exactly smiling, but she wasn't sad either. The way she caught her lower lip between her teeth suggested she was nervous about the topic though. Interesting…

He followed her example and sat up on the bed, studying her. Her hair were all tousled from their make out session and her adorable pink lips were slightly parted. She was hyperventilating a little.

"Sam, what is it?" He took hold of her hands, lightly running his thumbs over the back of her hands until she looked up at him.

"Well…" She started, unsure how to vocalize it exactly. "I think I'm pregnant."

His eyes got unbelievably big and he almost let go off her hands. Somehow he didn't expect that. There were many things working against them in this regard, so while they didn't take precautions, it was still a bit of a shock.

"Wow, that's…" He started with excitement, but the odd look she was giving him made him go quiet. "Sam, are you not happy about this?"

"I am, I just didn't know how you'd react it. We didn't talk about it much since after Jolinar it wasn't very unlikely and so…"

"Oh come on…" He gently hugged her, being hyperaware that he needed to be careful with her now. "We're talking about a baby. A little, mini baby Carter, that's exciting!"

"It could be a mini-O'Neill, you know that, right?"

"Let's hope not…" Jack said, smiling from ear to ear. "So how sure are you?"

"The test was positive and the odds of a false positive are almost zero, but the only thing that is one hundred per cent is physical examination by a doctor. I have an appointment in the morning."

"Then we should go to bed. You need all the rest you can get."

"Even if I am pregnant, it's not like I'm sick, Jack." She rolled her eyes at him and gave him that 'I am right' look. "I will still be able to work and do things, you know?"

"But we don't know if everything is okay yet. And we were going to bed anyway."

"You're right. Let's go to bed."

"Yes, ma'am." He gave her a little peck on the lips before they snuggled up together and fell asleep.

He woke up a couple hours later, because he was lying on Sam's hairbrush that had apparently fallen into the bed earlier. He tried to relax and went back to sleep, but his brain had other ideas. He opened a beer and went to rummage around in his closet for memories.

Sitting down in the living room in total silence, looking at the photo in his hand, he felt the world weighing on his shoulders. He didn't even hear Sam coming in the room before she asked him if he was alright.

"I didn't want to wake you up." He apologized, averting her gaze. One could see he wasn't in a very good place.

"You didn't. I was thirsty." She crossed the room and sat beside him, just barely grazing his arm.

He cleared his throat and started speaking very quietly. "I just…"

"You don't have to explain." Sam said, bringing him closer to her. He melted into the contact, letting her hug him from the side, but still he wouldn't look at her. She put her head on his shoulder and glimpsed at the photo of Charlie.

She grappled with the news herself. When Jack said she should take it easy because they didn't even know if everything was okay yet, it freaked her out. She had already been worried about telling him and after he reminded of the thousand things that still could go wrong, it got even worse. What if something was wrong? She wasn't exactly twenty anymore, and had gone through her fair share of serious injuries and operations. That sort of came with the nature of her job. And Jolinar had messed up her body chemistry in truly unbelievable ways. What if she could conceive, but could not carry the baby to term? Her chest constricted at the thought and it suddenly felt like every molecule of air was being sucked out of her lungs. What if she was just setting Jack up for another disastrous loss?

She felt him shift as he put the photograph down on the table. The next thing she knew, he embraced her in a tight hug and she was swimming in his masculine scent. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Her voice was shaking a little and she knew he noticed. He knew her all too well to miss the hesitation.

She was trembling as she took the much-needed deep breath. His presence was always so reassuring. And it didn't matter if they were being held together in a cell or trying to save the galaxy. As long as h was with her, she felt it was somehow going to be okay. She wonder if that feeling was how you know you found the right person. She never ever felt like that with any other boyfriends.

There was another source of unease that plagued Sam. She did not know anything about being a mother. She did not even have many friends who had children whom she could ask about the basics. And Jack has done this before, although she was not sure about how much he'd been around when Charlie was little. A bit by bit, he shared with her much about his late son, but she was careful not to pry, even if she wanted to know more. She understood it still haunted him and always would.

She could feel him moving again. He leaned back and brought her with him, so now she was comfortably lying on him. He shifted them a little, so she didn't lie on her stomach, but on her hip, and felt her settle her head on his shoulder. His right hand was resting on her thigh, while the left one was lightly caressing her stomach.

The intimacy of that moment could not be overstated. And while they were both surprised at what had happened, they were now connected together by a strong bond – fragile life that was a combination of them both, that they were responsible for. The morning check-up felt like too much waiting to discover whether all was okay, since they were both wrecked with worry. Sam grabbed Jack's hand tightly as if she was dangling over the cliff and Jack was her only lifeline. She smiled nervously, thinking how their life would change in the near future.
