Chapter 4: Reality

Sasuke woke up to a horrible beeping noise feeling utterly drained as if his battery was on it's last fifth percent. He couldn't remember where he was and the first thing he noticed after the spots stopped swimming his vision was that the place was blindingly bright.

The raven tried turning to assess his surroundings but was greeted by excruciating pain in his abdomen, specifically in his left side. He couldn't help the scream of pain that escaped from him as he instinctively sat upright.

A startled nurse ran in to see what was happening and immediately ran to the teen to help him lay back down.

By the time his back finally touched the mattress, he was sweating bullets and breathing heavily.

The nurse scolded him for being reckless and after she checked his vitals, she left saying she was going to call the doctor.

Sasuke merely laid there trying to catch his breath. He was confused and didn't know what was going on with him.

Suddenly he heard someone frantically call his name and turned his head slightly to see his brother darting towards him. The older man gently embraced him and started crying. If the teen was confused before, he was definitely that times three thousand right now.

He looked at his brother questionably as the man pulled away but the man didn't seem to register the look as he rather ran his fingers gently over Sasuke's face like the boy was made of porcelain.

"Itachi, what's wrong?" he choked out in a raspy voice. Now that he thought about it, it felt like he drank a litre of sand, that's how dry his throat felt.

The older brother poured Sasuke a glass of water and placed a straw inside so that the boy could drink. Sasuke stared at his brother with an eyebrow raised as he drank while his brother held the glass.

"So are you gonna tell me what THAT was all about?" he asked when he was done drinking and his brother laughed while wiping the tears off his face with his sleeve.

"I was just so releaved to see that you have finally woken up. It's been three days Sasuke," he said with a sad look in his eyes. The teen stared at his brother shocked. He was out for three fucking days, what on Earth happened to him.

As if reading the teen raven's thoughs, Itachi began to explain what happened.

"That day after we left you to rest, your body started rejecting the antibiotics and the other medication that the doctor gave you to fight the infection. Your infection was so bad that they had to remove your kidney," he said solemnly.

"They removed my what?" asked the teen, unsure if he heard right. Itachi just placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed lightly, the gentle action still causing Sasuke to hiss in pain.

"Oh fuck I'm so sorry Sasuke, are you okay?" asked Itachi as he looked at his brother worriedly. The onyx eyed teen just took a deep breath and nodded after the painful tremors passed.

"Was my infection really so bad? I felt fine the day before that Itachi," he said and the elder man didn't know what to say.

"I don't know why it spiraled like that either little brother," he said and Sasuke just sighed.

"Where's Shiro? Is he here? I want to see my son," asked Sasuke and Itachi just smiled sweetly.

"He's at the cafeteria with Dei. He insists on getting you a healthy snack everytime. You know how insistent Dr. Uchiha can be," he said with a chuckle and Sasuke smiled. He sometimes didn't know what he did to deserve such a sweet, thoughtful and considerate child.

While he was thinking about his son, the doctor decided to come in. She had blond hair and was particularly gifted in the bossom area.

"I'm glad to see you're finally awake Uchiha-san. My name is Dr. Tsunade Senju. I'm your Urologist," she said and Sasuke nodded while she examined his medical chart and vitals.

"How are you feeling right now?" she questioned the teen while taking out a pen to write on his medical chart.

"I feel really drained and my abdomen is killing me. Also it really hurts over here," he said and pointed to the spot.

Itachi frowned at his response. Usually Sasuke would have snarky response but he was replying with the total opposite of that.

"Yes, we had to remove a rib to gain access to your kidney," she said and he nodded while she scribbled on the chart.

"How long must I stay in here? I just started classes at Konoha University so I don't want to fall behind," he said and the doctor started laughing.

"You workaholics are all alike. Always putting your work before your health," she said smugly earning a weak glare from the teen before continuing.

"We're supposed to keep you here for a week and so far you've spent three days here so only four to go," she said and smiled at his confusion.

"Only four more days Uchiha," she said and laughed when he blushed in embarrassment. Doped up patients always processed things slower so she couldn't resist teasing sometimes.

"Anyways, we're going to have to draw more blood from you later for further tests okay so don't be surprised when you see a nurse with lots of needles. We have to make sure that this infection isn't aggressive and that it hasn't spread to your other organs," added Tsunade and the teen merely nodded.

That was when Deidara and Shiro walked in. When the child saw his father was awake, he started screaming and reaching for him.

"DADDY!!!" he screamed and started choking on his cries. The teen automatically sat up to take his son and had to bite his lip to muffle a scream although most of it was heard anyways.

Itachi and Tsunade ran to help the teen lay down gently. He felt like he was gonna pass out from the agony.

"Sasuke don't be so foolish," said Itachi worriedly when his brother managed to catch his breath.

"Sorry," the teen whispered through clenched teeth while running his fingers through his son's hair who was now sitting on a chair and sobbing softly.

"Daddy?" he asked with his lip quivering. Sasuke managed a weak smile to reassure his son that he was okay now.

"It's okay buddy, don't cry. Daddy's okay now," he said as he brushed his fingers over pink chubby cheeks.

When his son's lip refused to stop quivering, Sasuke tried to tickle the tiny boy's armpit which was his most ticklish spot.

Everyone in the room smiled as Shiro started howling in laughter. The mood was now effectively lightened.

"So I heard my baby got me a nice healthy snack, where is it?" asked the teen and Shiro's eyes sparkled at the question.

"Uncle Dei where is it?" he asked as he turned towards the blond. Deidara just laughed while he took out some fruit salad they bought down at the cafeteria.

"Why thank you Dr. Uchiha," said Sasuke as he took it from Shiro who was now practically beaming.

"Does Daddy want me to feed him?" asked the boy and Sasuke nodded once Tsunade changed the bed to a more seated position.

Just as Sasuke was taking his third bite of the fruit salad, Naruto decided to walk in.

The teen blond dropped the flowers he had brought on the floor when he saw the raven was awake and practically ran towards him.

"Sasuke! You're awake now!" he all but screamed earning a wince from everyone and a hit on the head from Tsunade.

"Pipe it down you inconsiderate brat. How many times do I have to tell you that? This is a hospital not a bar," she scolded him and pulled his ear.

"Owwww baachan, I'm sorry I'm sooorry okay I get it. Can you knock off the ear pulling?" he asked gently so his ear wouldn't get wrenched off. Knowing her, she probably would do that and then patch his ear up afterwards.

"Baachan?" asked Deidara when he realized no one was gonna ask that question.

"Uh yeah, she's my dad's godmother but it feels weird calling her that because she's been the only mother figure to him so that makes her my grandmother ya know," he said with a smile.

"And by father you mean that silver haired guy..." he trailed off so that Naruto could fill in the blanks.

"Yeah she's Kakashi's godmother slash mom ya know," he added and everyone nodded, even Shiro.

"Well looks like you guys have some catching up to do, I'll leave you guys alone. Uchiha don't forget about the nurse okay," she said and after he nodded she left but not before telling Naruto to behave.

"So Naruto, what are you doing here?" asked the raven teen and Naruto blushed sheepishly.

"We're friends so of course I'm gonna come visit you when you're in the hospital. I brought flowers by the way," he said and set then down on a table.

"You brought flowers for a guy you just met a few days ago?" asked Sasuke skeptically and Naruto pretended to not hear the question.

"Anywho, since you've been elected as my new best friend, God help Kiba's poor soul..." he added and Itachi and Deidara smirked. They didn't think this Kiba fellow would be to concerned, more like relieved at the news.

"...lets play twenty questions or as many as I want in other words," he ended and Sasuke groaned a bit.

"Right going at number one, I wanted to ask, how old are you Itachi?" he asked and Itachi raised a perfect eyebrow, not expecting at being the recipient of Naruto's questions.

"Well that's a weird question but either way, I'm twenty three and my boyfriend is twenty one years old if that was your next question," he stated with a teasing smirk.

"I was just curious okay sheesh," he said with a blush causing the two older boys to start laughing.

Sasuke just stared at the blond with a smile gracing his features. The blond surprisingly just fit in with their little family.

"Naruto-nii carry me," said Shiro while reaching out with his tiny little arms open. Naruto smiled and obeyed the toddler without a second to spare.

"Is nii-san gonna spend the whole day with us again?" asked the youngest Uchiha with a blush tinting his cheeks.

"Of course, anything for Shiro-chan," he said and tickled the boy.

"Again? You've been here everyday since I was out?" asked Sasuke with a brow raised.

"Yes Prince of Darkness. Is that so weird?" retorted Naruto while trying to conceal his rapidly growing blush.

"Yes as a matter of fact it is. It's creepy that you'd come to stare at a stranger's unconscious and seemingly dead body," added Sasuke with a slight scoff.

"That's where you're wrong Sasuke, you're my best friend now, not a stranger," he said causing Sasuke to almost roll his eyes.

Itachi smiled as he and his lover took a seat. He couldn't help but think how perfect Naruto was for the little family. He was exactly what Sasuke and Shiro needed in their lives.

Just then, Suigetsu walked in and froze in the doorway when five pairs of eyes landed on him.

"Sheesh guys, if I wanted someone to look at me like that, I'd just go to the police station. Damn you guys are like cops," he said and Shiro squealed at the presence of his other uncle.

"Uncle Getsu!" he screamed and jumped out of Naruto's arms to go to the other man.

Naruto's eyes narrowed at the sudden appearance of the new guy and couldn't help but feel slightly jealous, especially towards Shiro's reaction.

This action wasn't gone unnoticed by the older boys in the room. Itachi and Deidara just looked at each other as two sly smirks graced their faces.

"Oh the names Suigetsu by the way. I'm Sasuke's best friend and you are?" asked the violet eyed man the blond teen who had a slight scowl on his face. He extended his hand out of courtesy and waited for a reply.

Naruto stared the guy up and down. He was a lean-built young man of average height, straight white hair with a light-blue tint to it and had some weird sharp looking teeth. He was fairly attractive but the blond didn't like him so he wasn't gonna start thinking about such stuff.

"I'm Naruto, a friend of Sasuke's. We met at KU," he said and shook the man's hand none too gently. They stared in each other's eyes with a challenging look, the atmosphere turning sour quite quickly.

"Ahhhhhh I see," he said and pushed past the blond to go sit down on a chair next to Sasuke's bed.

"Hey babe, how are you feeling?" he said and pecked Sasuke on the cheek, dangerously close to the mouth causing Naruto to growl under his breath. The teen Uchiha merely raised a brow but was feeling too fatigued to argue with his friend.

"I have a missing organ, what do you expect?" he said but his voice was devoid of any malice behind it. He was happy to see the man.

"Do you always have to be so sassy?" he said with a hint of humor in his voice causing the older boys to laugh. Naruto was clearly not amused.

"So Suigetsu, how long have you known Sasuke?" asked the azure eyed teen with feigned politeness.

Suigetsu raised a brow at this and decided to cut the boy some slack. He wasn't really in the mood for a childish mating fight with the blond for Sasuke, even though the look on his face was priceless.

"We've known each other since we were say ten. My dad used to work for Sasuke's guardian, that's how we met," he said with a smirk before turning to look at Deidara.

"Anyways what I'd like to ask is if Uchiha's have a thing for blondes or is it just you two?" asked Suigetsu causing Deidara to burst out laughing. The Uchiha brother's wanted to roll their eyes at the question.

"Seems like it," said Deidara while trying to dodge a light punch from Itachi. After dodging it, he stuck his tongue out then gave the older man a chaste kiss on the lips as if to apologize.

"Wait aren't you and Sasuke a..." said Naruto and trailed off so that Suigetsu could continue.

"What? No, I was just messing with you. I'm one hundred percent straight so there's no chance of us getting together. Besides I have a girlfriend even though she can be annoying at times," he said with a smile on his face causing Naruto to let out a breath of air he didn't know he was even holding.

"Yeah, Sasuke might be gay but I don't think he wants to be hitting that," said Deidara while gesturing with his thumb towards Suigetsu.

"Hey now what the fuck is that supposed to mean?" said the man with feigned hurt. "Any guy would be lucky to be hitting this," he said and ran his hand down his chest.

Sasuke started laughing at the grossed out look on everyone's faces but winced in pain. Laughing was definitely a big no no.

Everyone turned worriedly towards the teen but he flashed them a small reassuring smile once the pain subsided.

"Guys stop making me laugh," he said with an amused tone and everyone smiled gently.

Sasuke's nurse decided to come in and shooed everyone out so she could draw some blood from the teen. She also injected his medication into his IV bag and when she was done, everyone stepped back in.

"Jeeze don't you guys have a life?" asked Sasuke groggily, his medication was definitely strong.

"It's orientation week, it's not like I'm gonna miss out on work or anything," said Naruto nonchalantly and Sasuke looked at Deidara and Itachi.

"Classes also start next week for us third years yeah," said Deidara with a smile and Suigetsu flashed a toothy grin.

"And I took leave," said Itachi with a gentle smile on his face causing Sasuke to groan for the umpteenth time.

"Wait you're a third year? I thought you were the same age as Sasuke?" asked Naruto.

"Yeah I am but my dad threw me in a private school when I was still a baby, that stupid ass prick. I'm not as dumb as you've probably perceived okay. I finished high school when I was 16," he said with an arrogant like smirk on his face before continuing.

"Anyways I'm studying Weapons Engineering as well as Technological Hoplology at KU," boosted the weapons enthusiast.

Naruto merely oohed and turned to Deidara so he could talk about what he's studying.

"Oh me, I'm studying to become an artist yeah," he said with a smile and a sparkle in his eyes.

"You're a very curious person I must say Naruto," said Itachi with a calculating gaze.

"Yeah I like knowing about anything and everything ya know, it's how you can connect with a person on a personal level ya feel me," he said with a face cracking grin.

"I see," said the oldest brother while everyone proceeded to take a seat.

Sasuke protested that everyone should leave because he was feeling tired but they all said that 'if they could sit by him for three days when he was out cold, they can still do it now,' causing the raven to want to roll his eyes.

The small group was chatting happily when Tsunade came back after about an hour with a worried look on her face. She held the test results in his hand.

"Is there something wrong doctor?" asked Itachi first, afraid to know the answer.

"I'm afraid so. According to the test results, they're are some large traces of the infection in his remaining kidney," she said and Sasuke felt like his world fell beneath his feet.

"I'm so sorry Uchiha-san, the only option we have is to put you on those same antibiotics. It's the only option we've got. If your body forms an ammunity to it again this time, the infection will monopolize which may lead to kidney failure," she said sadly and Itachi stood up to go comfort his brother.

"What happens if he was to deny treatment?" asked Suigetsu.

"The infection will slowly spread and he'd likely end up here again in a few months. He'd still lose his kidney. It's a lose-lose situation," she added and everyone kept quiet after that. They didn't know what else to say.

"Itachi?" asked Sasuke as he looked at his brother. He didn't know what to do and needed some advise.

"I really don't know Sasuke but I think it would be wise to try the treatment now. It would be futile to avoid the inevitable. If it's bound to happen eventually, you should do it now so that the infection doesn't affect anything else," he said with a sad lost look in his eyes.

Sasuke nodded slowly. "We can try the antibiotics now. There isn't really any other option right."

The blond doctor nodded and went off to go find the nurse.

Once Tsunade left, the mood changed into that of a depressed one. Nobody knew what to say so they all just sat there awkwardly, staring at random things in the room.

"Uhm guys, I think I wanna be left alone," said Sasuke in a soft whisper. His throat was thick with emotion and he was glad he managed to choke that out sounding semi-alright.

Everyone nodded and Deidara said that they were just going down to the cafeteria and to phone them if he needed anything.

Once they left the room, Itachi said he needed to use the bathroom and after Deidara gave Suigetsu and Naruto a look to keep an eye on Shirosuke, he followed his boyfriend.

"So Shiro, is there anything specifically yummy that you wanna eat?" asked Naruto in an attempt to try and distract the child. He had a confused look on his cute little face but instantly beamed at the thought of a yummy snack.

"ICE-CREAM!!!" he cheered loud enough to make Naruto's eyes tear up with pride. He knew wherever Tsunade was, she must have broken a desk or something.

"Woah when did you become so loud?" asked Suigetsu while trying to stop the ringing in his ears. He was carrying the child so he heard the yell the loudest.

"Sorry," he apologized and hid his face in Suigetsu's neck. The violet eyed man just attacked the boy with tickles.

The two guys and one little guy then went and bought some ice-cream for them and the two missing uncles. They then went outside and found a nice bench under a tree to eat it.

Naruto sat down on the bench with Shiro while Suigetsu stood a few meters away from them and took out a cigarette while leaning against the tree. He offered Naruto one and the blond said he'll smoke it when the violet eyed man was done.

"Naruto-nii, when are you and daddy getting married?" asked the small boy casually while taking a bite of his ice-cream.

Naruto choked on his own spit and turned to stare at the boy wide eyed. Suigetsu just burst out laughing.

"Huh?" asked the blond teen dumbly, unsure if he actually heard Shiro correctly.

"I said, when are you and daddy getting married?" he asked the teen again.

Naruto felt dumbfounded, to be honest when wasn't he feeling like that. He pulled Shiro onto his lap and after debating what to do in his mind for a second, he decided to hear the little guy out first.

"Shiro-chan, what makes you think that Sasuke and I are gonna get married?" he asked gently and Shiro looked at him with a quivering lip.

"We'll daddy likes you and I know you like daddy and mommies and daddies are supposed to like each other and if uh if you and daddy like each other, then you should get married," he said with glossy eyes before continuing.

"And daddy needs someone to look after him and care for him now that he's a little sick. Me and Uncle Tachi and Uncle Dei and Uncle Sui are still gonna help daddy get better but he will get better faster if you are there because you like one another," he ended his analysis causing the two teen boys to smile.

Shiro might be only four but he's an Uchiha so his intellect far precedes his young age. Plus it was so cute that he thought that if his father had someone who loved him and he loved in return, that he'd heal faster.

"Well Shiro, I can't exactly say that your dad and I are gonna get married but I don't mind dating if he's game for it ya know."

Shiro oohed for a few seconds then turned to look at his violet eyed uncle with mild curiosity on his face.

"Uncle Sui, what's dating?" he asked causing the man to choke on the smoke he just inhaled from his cigarette.

"Jeeze Shiro, warn a guy before you do that," he said causing the toddler to blush and hide his head against Naruto's neck. The small boy had a habit of doing this whenever he was shy or nervous.

"Let me see, uh dating is like when two people who uh like really like each start hanging out and being around each other all the time, uhm kinda like Itachi and Deidara," he said causing a look of mortification to wash over the small boy's features.

"Uncle Tachi and Uncle Dei are not married?!" he exclaimed causing Suigetsu to snort.

"What made you think they're married Shirosuke?" he asked and the boy blushed.

"Well Uncle Dei is always there by us and he's always kissing Uncle Tachi and he said they love each other and he also looks after me and makes us all yummy snacks even though it's sometimes really spicy," he said innocently causing Suigetsu to put out his cigarette and stalk over towards the boy.

"And Uncle Dei always tells me that he loves Uncle Tachi so sooooo much when we're alone and that he's so happy that he met him because now he has me for a little nephew. Oh and he calls Uncle Tachi his hubby which daddy told me is just another name for husband," he said looking down sadly.

"Don't look so sad, I know they love each other," said Suigetsu while kneeling in front of the saddened pouting boy.

"I'm sure Itachi is just waiting till they're both a little bit older before he and Deidara can get married. Even though they're not married now, Deidara is always gonna be your uncle so don't think about him and Itachi leaving each other anytime soon okay buddy," he said and the boy nodded slowly.

Suigetsu looked at the blond teen to cheer the boy up since he wasn't particularly good at this. His cheering up usually included drinking and clubbing.

"Shiro oh my goodness, your ice-cream is melting!" screeched the blond causing said boy to gasp and dive for his beloved ice-cream.

The two teens giggled at how adorable the little boy and they both ruffled his hair a bit. Although the mood was slightly better now, the two teens couldn't help but think about Sasuke.

Once everyone left him in peace, Sasuke tried to nap but after failing to fall asleep for about thirty minutes, he gave up and turned slowly to stare at the posters on the wall.

'Why is this happening to me? I've never done anything wrong before, right? Oh okay, except that one night gone wrong where Shiro was conceived BUT that incident lead to me meeting my angelic son,' thought Sasuke with a smile.

Shirosuke was his whole world. His entire universe. His love knew no boundaries for his baby boy. Even though he had Shiro while he was still a child himself, his little boy turned out to be perfect in every way.

'I have to survive this, if not for me but for Shiro. He deserves to have the best life possible, even if it's only with a single parent. I can't just give up and die and hand my baby over to Itachi. He already has so much on his plate and there's a difference between being an uncle and being a father. I can't do that to him, it's too much to ask for. That's why I'm gonna fight. I'll fight and I won't give up. I can overcome this. It's not gonna be easy, but I'm not giving up. No matter what. I will see my boy grow up and become a wonderful and successful man and I'm going to be there every step of the way. I will see him get married and have his own children. He will live an amazing life and I'll be there for him in every way that I can.'

With his resolve to survive strengthened, a smile graced Sasuke's face as he closed his eyes and fell into a deep peaceful sleep.

A/N: This chapter is done and dusted and Sasuke didn't die. I repeat, Sasuke did not die at the end of this chapter so no need to start stoning me.
