The old man had messed up again, which meant there will be no home-cooked dinner tonight, he was probably going to buy take out again, this whoever gave me a chance, and that chance being.
"Please let me try old man." I did feel a little bit guilty at annoying the man who saved my life, but I just couldn't handle anymore more burgers. "I promise I can do it."
"Absolutely no Shirou." My father rejected my offer immediately. "I don't want you messing with anything in the kitchen, you could get hurt."
Kiritsugu's argument made sense to a normal kid, but I knew that I was different. "It's fine Kiritsugu, if I do end up getting hurt, my powers will just heal me" A cocky grin descended on my face.
"Powers?" In contrast Kiritsugu's expression changed from mildly annoyed to mildly concerned. "What do you mean Shirou?"
While my grin did disappear upon seeing the old man worried, It quickly came back, in fact it came back even bigger. "Well dad, remember last night when I hurt myself falling down? Well after a little while the bruises completely disappeared! Isn't that amazing?"
Kiritsugu expression changed again to annoyed, looked at the ceiling and muttered. "Tsk. Why is Avalon acting up?" And looking back at me he said. "Shirou, sorry but we're gonna have to leave the cooking debacle to latter, We are gonna have to go to the shed for now.
"The shed? Why?" Is he doubting me or something, well I'm just gonna have to prove to him that I'm telling the truth.
"It's something related to magecraft, it's urgent and the shed has most of the magecraft related items on the house." The old man explained with a tired expression on his face.
"Oh, Okay" I responded, but then I realized something and that something but a smile on my face, and doing a little cheer I squeaked. "Wait. You're teaching me magecraft aren't you?" my voice rose with excitement. "You realized that I have some super special magecraft talent and you're gonna teach me!"
Kiritsugu sighed "Sorry Shirou, but it's just a checkup" He got closer to me, raised his hand and gave my head a pat and reminded me. "I know you really want to learn magecraft, but believe me that practice has nothing good in store for people like us"
He then started to walk towards the exit of our house to go to the shed, I got the message and started following him, normally I would pester him more about magecraft, but he looked worried and I didn't want to make him more stressed.
Still I couldn't help but to ask. "Hey dad, what do you mean people like us?"
"I mean people who still see others as people" He mumbled, my eyes widened, that… For some reason that didn't sit right, the way he said it was cold and I felt shivers going down my spine.
"Dad are you okay?" I stuttered, he stopped walking, turning around to look at me in the eyes.
"Sorry Shirou I didn't mean to scare you, I'm just too tired to talk about magecraft now. Okay?" He reassured, while giving me another head pat.
As my father turned around and began yet again his walk toward the shed I said. "Okay dad." still, my dad didn't have to be so worried, because I knew that nobody could ever hurt me while he was here, after all not even the fire could.
I had the worst luck, no that was wrong, Shirou had the worst luck, after all…
"Dad? Is everything ok?" He asked, the boy now standing atop a magical circle.
Once we arrived at the shed I used what little magic materials I had left and drew the circle on the ground, it was a very basic one, just used to test abnormalities in the body, even spiritual ones.
With it I found Avalon on the boy, the problem was that the Noble Phantasm was very much active, the reason for that was…
"D-dad?" He mumbled, clearly scared.
I began holding my head, I felt as if I was going to pass out.
Calm down, deep breaths, it's no time to panic, he's counting on me, he thought.
"It's well..." I began, how do I explain to a child that now his life was about to change forever? That now he would be forever hunted by many factions to either recruit him or kill him.
"Shirou, first I have to tell you about Alaya." Right, it was better to explain the history first, he could not lie, the child, his child had a Sacred Gear, and considering that the Sacred Gear was pulsing with more magical energy than his old servant… It was probably a Longinus.
The boy made a comical expression, betraying the situation and exclaimed. "Yeah I know! It's that princess from a new show!" He giggled a bit and seeing my surprised face said. "Just kidding dad, it's probably something magecraft related, right?" He took a pause looked at me in the eyes and continued. "It's fine, your a hero so I know it will be alright. So no need to make that face, Okay?"
Probably in contrast with what he expected, my face dropped even more, he looked surprised and asked. "Dad?"
That… I had condemned that innocence to end, another sin to carry upon my shoulders.
Still I had to respond. "It's fine Shirou, but this is a bit serious so pay attention, okay?" He nodded his head signing me to continue, and continue I did. "Shirou, Alaya is the will of humanity, well I know that's a bit hard to understand, but think of it as a big computer of mana who works to protect humanity."
"Whoa, we have that?" He excitedly asked.
"It's not really something to be happy about, like I said Alaya is much like a computer" I sat down on the ground, just thinking about this is getting me nervous, but I had to tell him. "It's cold and it doesn't truly save people."
Shirou nodded and also sat down, but then began to look confused and asked. "But you said it works to protect humanity?"
"Yeah, but like a computer it ignores those accidents that it considers inconsequential" I Sighed, now it came the hard part. "You see… Alaya likes to put safeguards, one of this safeguards is called the Sacred Gear System."
I looked at the ceiling and after some seconds continued. "This system puts magical artefacts, upon people, well people with enough human blood that is, magic creatures cannot have Sacred Gears, it is the will of humanity after all.
Excitement shone through Shirou's eyes he could see were this is was going.
Before he could ask I said. "Yes, Shirou It's exactly what you think, you have a Sacred Gear, a weapon of Alaya"
But it seemed he had another question. "So... my healing powers are my Sacred Gear?"
"No, that's another artifact which I put on you, its name is Avalon, but then again with its power it might as well be on the same level of a Longinus."
Oh boy here we go. "Which brings to my next point, yes Longinus are different things, there are thirteen of them, and their difference is power, a Longinus makes a normal Sacred Gear look like a fake magical trick."
"So, I have two mega magical powers!" Still he took a little bit of time to think and asked. "Wait, why did you give avalon in the first place?"
"Well you certainly are energetic today." I chuckled a little and answered. "The reason for that was to save from the… well…"
Sensing my awkwardness the boy finished for me. "The fire. Don't worry dad, it's fine.
"Right." I don't really know how to feel about how his handling that day, is it truly fine that he seems to not care.
But this was not time for that. "The reason why I'm telling about the Longinus is simple, you have one" and considering that the Longinus had enough connection with the Fae to activate Avalon, it most likely was… "Divine Dividing, the Longinus containing one of the Heavenly Dragons."
"That's good… Right?"
"Yes and no, the Divine Dividing is an incredible tool, but remember or talk about the mages association?" Just thinking about that clusterfuck of psychopaths made feel sick, but at this point he had to know why having Albion was not exactly a good thing.
"They're those scary mages, right?" He sighed "I'm guessing they're not exactly fans of the whole Longinus thing."
Shirou catched on quickly, but I elaborated on the mages situation. "Yes, they will most likely either try to recruit you or… well… You get it."
"So like… try to steal my Longinus?"
Nodding I explained. "No, the Longinus is something put on your soul once your born, and it's removal causes the death of the user, and as a side effect the death of the people surrounding the now dead person" Taking a deep breath I elaborated. "Each Longinus has a source of huge power, yours containing the soul of a very powerful dragon, if he was removed he would not have anything containing his power, and it would generate a massive explosion of mana."
"So the mages association can't do much then?"
"They can, the only thing that this changes is that they will experiment on your body, instead of just ripping Divine Dividing out." And now to explain the biggest problem. "There is basically no hiding, a Longinus user will almost always end up in trouble, it comes in the territory of having something so powerful"
I didn't tell him but the users o Divine Dividing and Boosted Gear were especially included in the trouble makers list. "Avalon, the magic Item I put on you certainly doesn't help."
"Why, I get that it's powerful too, but we can just take it out." Trying to reassure me he said.
"I Don't know if we can, Avalon is normally and artifact that stays mostly dormant, but Albion the dragon inside the Longinus has a history with the creators of Avalon, and because of that it's seems to be back at full power.
My hands reflexively went to my pockets trying to find a cigarette to calm me down, but I had long since abandoned the habit.
There would be no running away from this, It was time to finish my explanation. "Since Divine Dividing is in your soul and has activated Avalon, I don't know if is safe to remove it, it's better to leave it as it is"
"So… what do we do then?" Worry was very clearly on his voice.
But I reassured him. "I make you ready, for whatever comes, even if I have to train you in magecraft" My son went from worried to a smile which brought happiness even to a tired soul like mine.
Everything burned, to the people, to the city, to the skies.
And I walked, ignoring the screams, ignoring the cries, ignoring the curses.
This was hell after all, there was no hope anyways, my mind was already dead, only my body which was still alive could act.
And this body without thought could only walk forward to escape death. It was a unique situation, after all the body was only acting on instinct, if he stopped to think for a second about this hell he would give up on hope, stop walking and die.
But he did not. Still this was only a memory, a nightmare, but there was something different… The man never came, the rain never came.
Instead of his usual dreams where his father would save him with the brightest smile on his face, and with tears rolling down his eyes the only thing that came was a roar.
The fire could not win, whatever made the roar was absolute and so was his power.
I look towards the sky, and in there was a white dragon, with horns of gold.
And he looked back.
"Tsk, stop wasting time in memories and become strong already, talking with you only through dreams is annoying" The dragon shouted.
I could not respond, I could only look in awe and think.
That power… Will be mine someday.
And so my dream ended.
