MM TCOT Wandering Widow

I've just watched the season 4 episode. There's a particular scene in the courtroom where the witness who is the sister of the clients deceased husband is well put out about not getting a share of the inheritance and disparages her and the job of secretary. Della sits at the defence table and seems to be ignoring the outburst….but I thought is she? So I wrote a very short MM.

Disclaimer: I don't own them, I wish I did! I make no money and write only for fun.

'Are you alright?' Perry asked softly as they re-entered the office after the close of the days proceedings.

'I'm fine, just fine,' Della responded with a sigh but her shoulders were slumped slightly and her face projected nothing but sadness.

'You were awfully quiet on the way back.' Perry leaned against Della's desk and folded his arms as he watched her hang up her coat and start preparing herself to take her seat and type up the notes from the court session.

'It's nothing,' she dismissed ratcheting paper and hammering on the keys. Perry walked to the back of Della's chair and leaned so close she could feel his breath on her neck.

'It's about what the last witness said isn't it?' He murmured into her ear before following up his question with a soft kiss onto her neck. Della stopped typing and drew in a heavy breath.

'She made it very clear that she thought all secretaries who get involved or marry their boss are just scheming women climbing the social ladder and that they don't belong there.'

'And that bothered you? I saw you flinch when she said it.'

'Of course it bothered me. In one sentence in open court, she confirmed every reason I ever had as to why I can never accept a marriage proposal from you.'

'Listen,' Perry gently turned her face to look at him. 'I've asked you because I want to marry you and at no time have I ever thought you a, what did she call our client, nothing but a socially climbing secretary.' He brushed a thumb across her lips. 'I love you for you.'

Della took his hands in hers and placed a kiss on each palm, 'And I love you for you, but I'm not going to marry you. Besides aren't you happy with what we have now?'

'What? Me destroying your reputation on a regular basis you mean?' He couldn't help the chuckle that came from deep within his chest.

'Only if people find out. You always said what we do in the privacy of our homes is no ones business but ours.' Della became serious again. 'Perry can we just leave it for now? All the benefits of a marriage without the legal commitment?'

Perry smiled and leaned in for a kiss. 'I simply love being illegal with you Miss Street.'
