Chapter 1: Ordan Village

"Tell me… Do you ever feel a strange sadness as dusk falls?" Otis said from his position sitting next to Marinette, watching the smooth waters of Ordana Spring. "They say it's the only time when our world intersects with theirs… the only time we can feel the lingering regrets of spirits who have left our world." He continued on slowly. "That is why loneliness always pervades in the hour of twilight…."

He looked over at Marinette and she held his gaze. "But enough talk of sadness, I have a favor to ask of you, Marinette."

"Okay…" She asked softly, "What is it?"

"I was supposed to deliver something to the royal family of Hyrule the day after tomorrow. It was a task set to me by the mayor, but..." he paused. "Would you like to go in my stead?" She blinked. "You have… never been to Hyrule right?"

Marinette shook her head. "What's it like?"

Otis gave her a small smile. "In the kingdom of Hyrule there is a great castle, and around it is Castle Town, a community far bigger than our little village and far bigger than Hyrule is the rest of the world the gods created." He looked back at her. "You should look upon it all with your own eyes."

She looked at him. "Really?"

"Of course," Otis started to get up. "But for now, it's getting late. We should head back to the village. I will talk to the mayor about this matter."

Marinette stood up, and paused for a moment to look up at the stars which were beginning to sprinkle the darkening sky. She then joined Otis next to her horse, Sweets, who was named in honor of her deceased parents that once were bakers, and they walked back to the village.

"Hey, Nette!" Marinette jolted awake to a voice. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, darted over to her window and looked down. Alya, one of Marinette's best friends and Otis's daughter, was waiting outside.

"Yeah, Alya?" She called back. "What do you need?"

"My mom was wondering if you could help herd the goats again?" Alya tapped her foot.

Marinette was tempted to roll her eyes. "Fine."

She turned around and climbed down her loft into the main part of her house to put on her plain work clothes.

"Hey, where's Sweets?" Alya asked once Marinette stepped outside.

"Huh, I don't know," Marinette said, turning around. An opened gate caught her the corner of eye and she narrowed her eyes "...but I may have an idea." Marinette started off down the path to the spring.

Every time Marinette went through here, she was amazed by the natural beauty of the small Ordona Spring. Everything was a green that reminded Marinette of the happy times she'd had there when she was younger.

Marinette walked around to the old wooden gate and immediately spotted exactly who she had expected to see.

"What do you want, Dupain-Cheng?" Chloe, the daughter of the mayor, asked, stroking Sweets's snowy mane. Chloe, for a reason that was unknown to Marinette, was completely obsessed with horses, including Sweets, who happened to be one of the only horses in the village. This wasn't the first time this had happened, but it annoyed Marinette to pieces every time.

"Chloe," Marinette tried not to grit her teeth. "Why did you take my horse?"

Chloe stammered. "Umm… well… I washed her because… you never do!" She gestured to the mostly dry horse.

Marinette raised an eyebrow. "Uh, huh."

"Anyways, since she's all prettied up now, I guess you can go ride her back to the village." Chloe rolled her eyes. "But don't you dare make her do too much, got it?"

Ignoring the mayor's daughter, Marinette mounted her horse and nudged Sweets into a trot back to where she had last seen Alya.

Not to Marinette's surprise, Alya wasn't still waiting in front of her house. Marinette held the reins and slowly steered Sweets onto the path that went to Ordon Village. Sweets changed to a slow walk as they entered the village and Marinette gave the village a soft look.

Small snowy butterflies fluttered around the village's rosy flowers, and if you listened you could hear the trickle of water coming from the river that the town was built around. To Marinette's right she could spot Otis practicing with his sword.

"Did you hear about the mischievous monkeys that have been coming into the village lately?" a voice behind her said, "You know, those things worry me a bit."

"You might want to lock up, wouldn't want any more goods stolen," said another.

"That's probably a good idea." The first one said, but Marinette had already continued through the village.

"Oh, Marinette!" Otis exclaimed as she passed by, "The twins are working on making a fishing rod for you so you guys can play together."

"Huh," That was all Marinette had to say.

"Marlena's also looking for you," he added.

Marinette nodded. "Alya already told me."

"She did? Good," the man nodded, "Well, good luck with the goats."

Sweets snorted, always being one not for waiting but rather for action, and started to move to the ranch entrance. "See you later!" Marinette called over her shoulder to Otis.

A few minutes later, a strong, musky scent entered Marinette's nostrils. She would have liked to say she was used to the smell, but every time, without fail, it made her want to gag.

"There you are, flyweight!" Nora, Alya's older sister, ran up to her. "I thought you would never come!"

"Where's you mom?" Marinette asked.

Nora shrugged. "She said she had something to take care of. Anyway, the goats have been acting awfully skittish lately," she gestured to a nearby goat, "So could you herd them into the barn quick?"

"Got it," Marinette nodded and proceeded to head toward the goats.

"Finished!" Marinette yelled to Nora, who was standing by the now closed gate, around half an hour later. "Do you need anything else?"

"Nope!"

"I'm heading out then!" Marinette gripped the reins and squeezed her legs. Sweets began to gallop forward and Marinette braced herself.

"Woohoo!" Marinette screamed as the girl and horse almost seemed to fly over the closed gate. With a slight jolt, Sweets's hooves once again made contact with the ground and the pair once again went down the trail pack to Ordon Village.

"MARINETTE! Wake up! It's morning already!" Marinette was tempted to hide her head under her pillow and ignore the problem that was most likely in a certain group of children outside.

Crawling out of her bed- she forgot to change out of her clothes from yesterday, oops-, Marinette practically slid down the ladder, unfortunately, not landing on her feet. Marinette groaned and rubbed the spot on her back she had probably bruised.

Deciding not to give it a second thought, Marinette scrambled onto her feet and rushed to the door. It easily swung, and the remaining momentum sent her tumbling forward and off the chunk of tree that the ladder to her door was built on.

Her body connected with the ground and Marinette somehow rolled forward, softening the impact. She somehow ended up somewhat shakily with her two feet on the ground.

Chris, Ella and Manon stared open-mouthed.

"Umm…" Ella started but Chris cut her off.

"Did you hear?" He said excitedly. "They are selling a slingshot at the store right now, A SLINGSHOT!"

"What?" Marinette asked, "A slingshot?"

"I wonder how powerful it is…" the boy trailed off, clearly not paying attention to anything else. "I… I need… I must try it…"

"Chris, if you want it so badly, just buy it from my parents' shop!" Manon placed her hands on her hips.

"Do you see any Rupees in my hand?" Chris retorted. "I can't afford that thing! Come on, Manon, can't you just loan it to me for a while?"

"You know she'll get in trouble for that! If you want it that bad, can't you just save up your allowance for it or something?" Ella pipped in.

"But my allowance is terrible!" he whined. "I wish I was born into a family with a slingshot rather than a goat farm..."

Marinette turned around, not caring to listen to the three continue to bicker. Instead, she walked over to Etta, Ella's twin sister, who was currently carefully stroking Sweets by where the horse was tied up.

"Hey, Marinette, you have a clear day, right?" Etta asked continuing to pet the horse. Marinette nodded her head. "So, me and Ella finished the fishing rod we were making. I figured I'd give it to you first thing in the morning but my dad said to wait until you come and get it, so I didn't bring it to you." Etta finally looked up at the older girl.

"Thanks!" Marinette beamed at the younger girl. "I'll make sure to go grab it later."
