A Twist of Fate: DARK FATE

Chapter Nineteen

Kamikaze ENDING – Premature because I loathe writing this story now. :)

Kami was caked in mud that hid the scratches and bruises from the fight with her sister. The mud also hid the tears that were cascading down her cheeks. She was exhausted. Emotionally. Physically. Fighting with her sister. Being hated by her sister. Resenting her sister. She could not continue this trend forever. She was turning into a version of herself that she herself despised.

"I forgive you," Kami whispered, eyes closed. She did not have to open them to know her sister was still on the ground, panting and recovering as well. This apology was not for Kim though. It was for herself. A gift that brought her an inner peace she desperately needed. Forgiveness would set her free.

She deserved that.

After learning the truth about the Jared and his friends.

After being informed by Edward that Bree was turned into a vampire in killed earlier this year.

After understanding why her sister had forsaken her.

This long overdue confrontation was only granted due to unfriendly (aka not Cullen Clan friends) showing up at a critical moment when she was about to admit the truth to Jake, Leah and Edward. Kami was forced to return to La Push for her own protection, escorted by Seth in his truck. Cullens and both wolf packs were hunting for these threatening vampires. Kim and Kami were forced to wait together at Sam's house while Emily and Quil were tracking down Kim and Claire.

In that moment of isolation, both twins were finally on the same page for the real showdown to occur. Kami, over eager, didn't even wait to begin until they were inside the house.

"I can't believe you. We are sisters, identical twins. Does that mean nothing to you?" Kami shrieked, her anger unfolding.

"It means that you fucked up my chances to be with Jared. It was supposed to be me!" Kim insisted with flared nostrils.

Instead of using more words, Kami let her fists do the talking.

Now Kami was patiently waiting for Kim's response to her forgeinvess when an eerie feeling sent chills down her spine. Warning her. Without second guessing herself, Kami followed her instinct.

"Run!" Kami shouted, grabbing her sister's hand and yanking her to follow. She dragged Kim along, forcing her to keep up with the fast pace. Something was wrong.

All the boys were gone. Seth wasn't around. She had the sneaking suspicion they were being watched. Hunted. Running away from the house and civilization seemed rash and unwise. But Kami couldn't ignore who else could be in danger if they had stayed.

"Kami! Stop!" Kim cried out. But Kami refused to let go or slow down her pace. Of course, they cannot outrun a vampire. At this point it was even toying with them by not cutting off their path. But it was the distance that Kami was most concerned about in the moment.

They needed more distance. Away from others. Closer to Forks. She did not let herself lose this focus as they wove between trees, and she made gut driven calls over which directions to take when a path split.

Soon enough, Kim stopped struggling to break free of Kami's grip and tightened their hands together. She wheezed and struggled to stick with Kami, but she didn't quit. She ran along her sister.

When Kami understood she was pushing her sister too hard and they got as far as they were going to get, she slowed their pace to a trot. Her heart rate soared at the rustling noise behind them.

Game over.

Kami strained to keep her eyes open to face their hunter. She turned slowly, stretching out the last few seconds of life she had remaining. She gasped when they came into view.

"What the-!?" Kami shouted as she watched the monsterous gray wolf shrink into… Brady? He had joined the pack? She was not aware of that. She only knew the kid because he was in the art class with her and Jake.

"I…uh?" His wide eyes darted around their surroundings as if he was lost. "Sorry. Shit!" He pounded his fists on his head. "I don't understand what is going on or why this happening." He began to shake. Kami hesitated from stepping forward, if this was his first time shifting then he would be very confused and quick to snap back into his wolf form. Or…at least that is what she assumed after reading Kim's diary.

"It's okay. How can we-"

Brady shot his head up and bobbed his head between looking at both twins.

"Damn it. Vampire. That's right." He took a deep breath and his shivering seemed to stop. "I can freak out later. I need to save Kami. Collin is on his way. He will take and protect Kim. Jared said I need to get away with Kami first." He squinted at each twin, trying to figure out which was Kami. The initial images from his packmates clouded his sight with too many to sift through. They looked the same to him!

Kami's hand ghosted her sister's shoulder. A light paper touch of affection before shouting in a shrill voice, "it's her."

Kim shifted her head at a breakneck speed to face Kami, her eyes widened in shock. Every other line of her face betrayed nothing of Kami's lie. And while Kami was thankful for that as Brady raced to Kim and whisked her in his arms before hurling back into the thick of the forest…she truly saw how selfish and flawed her twin was, not even hesitating for a second to claim her own identity.

Kami wondered if this act would vindicate her in her sister's eyes. Was she off the hook for Jared imprinting on her? Would she get her sister back? Could they repair their fractured relationship?

These thoughts- no questions whirled in her mind for a few mere suspenseful seconds. Brady was correct as well about Collin being close behind him. What Brady had not accounted for was that the vampire was closer.

Perhaps Kami should have trembled in fear when the pale female slinked towards her, all alone. But instead, she was at peace. She had been fighting all her life for everything she wanted and thought she had deserved. No one seemed to have fought for her just as hard. Not even Jared. She was tired. She just wanted to rest. So, she left herself slip away with a current of peace manifesting within her. It was pulling her to the unknown as she ignored the bones being broken and the sharp pain of teeth cutting into her flesh.

Before she was cast away too far off, someone called for her. Begging her to return. To come back. But…she was too exhausted to fight the current. She was fine with drifting. But at least she could say goodbye.

So she opened her eyes.

"Collin," Kami croaked as her eyes fluttered open to take in Collin's red face panting over her. He was also in her art class as well. More memorable than Brady. And then she began to wail. The pain was now real and registering in her mind. It was everywhere throughout her broken body.

"Kami, you hold on damn it. Carlisle is on his way. Please stay with me. Please! I…imprinted on you. Don't go. I don't understand what's going on. But you have to stay here with me to figure this out."

"Sorry, kid," Kami wheezed out between her screams. And then the screaming faltered, and the air went still.

Kami wasn't screaming. Or moving. Collin began to compress her chest with his hands for the heart he couldn't sense beating either.

Kami strolled into a white room.

"Out of 16,896,342 threads of fate, Jared imprinting on you only occurred on two paths. Just two. And here you were, on the darker fate of the two."

Kami blinked at the ball of light, unsure what to say in response.

"On other paths, you and you sister remained close. Well as close to be expected while hiding the truth from you about the wolves while she was with Jared. But you remained close all your lives. In 16,896,340 versions. She just needed to end up with Jared for things to be the best outcome."

Finally, Kami was ready to speak. "So, she is the true imprint?"

"Well…I wouldn't go that far. But logistics are not my department."

"She can be with him now then though, right? Because I died. Will the imprint transfer?"

"Sadly no. It's a one and done sorta deal. No exchanges."

"But they could still be together even without it," Kami insisted

The ball huffed a haughty laugh. "You think after he sees the switch you pulled to protect her that he will ever forgive her for being complacent? Or how she treated you before that?"

"With time all can be forgiven."

"Not when it comes to an imprint, Kami. Jared will never be Kim's on this path or the other one. But…" the light trailed off, feigning thoughtfulness.

"I'm listening."

"We can have you try again. A reset. And you could gamble you would choose a fate that lets Kim be imprinted on by Jared. The odds are highly in your favor if you try again."

"What about what Jared wants?"

The light bellowed an exaggerated sigh.

"That's the blessing and the curse of the imprint. He will be happy with whoever because he imprinted on them. As simple as that."

"That's troubling and enlightening," Kami mumbled before closing her eyes, replaying the few moments she spent with Jared that made an impact. Changed her. Did she want to let him go?

Kami gasped. "What about Collin? He mentioned he imprinted on me as well!"

"In 342 of the 16 million threads you come across Collin and he imprints on you. "

"Why are we statistically less likely to meet?" Kami asked.

"Timing. In more than half of those timelines, he imprints and never admits it to you because he has found someone else to fight the imprint for. In one wayward thread, you and Paul were even together."

"What a fucking mess. I thought this whole imprinting business was supposed to make their lives easier? Just seems to bring chaos and tragedy."

"Rewrite the tragedy then, Kami," the ball of light crooned, tempting Kami with the possibility.

"Where would I reset too? And would I remember any of what happened this summer?"

"The second semester of your junior year and you won't recall a thing. You will be a blank slate. With high odds of being steered towards a better future. No La Push, imprinting or ruined relationship with your sister."

"I think you're wrong."

"Wrong? About what?"

"I think if I start there, I will repeat the same path. Having Kim take my calculus final only to meet Jared."

"Oh Kami," it scoffed. "You only think that because your tiny human brain cannot comprehend how every little decision you make in a day is intwined to your future."

"What if I am right? Will we be repeating this conversation again?"

"Dear me, I hope not. Are you game?"

Kami nodded and then disappeared.

The ball shifted into a celestial being at the tail end of her departure. "Every time she is right. We come back here. To this conversation. She repeats her same mistakes. But this ending deviated from the usual. She was with her sister this time and chose to sacrifice herself for Kim. She always dies by herself but not in this way. I want her to succeed. I want her to make this path a better fate if she must choose Jared. She just has to remember…"

A Twist of Fate: Dark Fate

Epilogue

Everything within Kami shouted to tell Jared to shove it and keep whatever she had forgotten. But somewhere in her mind, a light flickered on, and she hesitated.

"-your notebook." Jared had stumbled over his words. Cool, popular and untouchable Jared. Despite wanting to sprint to her sister's truck she felt compelled to stay to understand the crimson shade staining Jared's cheeks.

"You're blushing," Kami taunted as she swiped the wired bound notebook from Jared's hand. "Why?"

Jared's blush deepened before a wide smirk broke out on his face. "Have you always been this direct?" He asked.

"If you started paying attention sooner, you wouldn't need to ask."

"Fair point, Kim Bell," Jared replied without missing a beat. Kami wasn't sure what had come over her. But she felt inclined to dive into this deep end.

"Hate to disappoint you, Jared…" she walked away, not looking back to observe if he would follow. Her lips twisted into a playful smile when he walked alongside her. She tilted her head toward him, catching the interest in his brown eyes.

"About what?" He asked at last.

She reached her hands out to grip the fabric of his shirt, resisting from planting her palms on the firm muscles. "Wrong twin," she revealed before pulling him towards her and pressing her lips to his own.

Author's FINAL note: YUP. That's really it. Sorry for the crap/rush ending, but I don't see myself ever finishing this how I originally planned. Whelp, so it goes! At least it is an end?
