Cape Cod, Massachusetts…

Jack Thornton, age 29, pulled into the parking lot of TC Construction, parked and headed for the front door to the office. Every time he passed the sign for the business, 'T' for Thornton, and 'C' for his best friend and partner, Lee Coulter, he felt a great sense of pride.

How they got there…

At the tender young age of 18, Jack and Lee met at Frostburg University, in Frostburg, Maryland, where Jack, from Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Lee, from Baltimore, Maryland, both found themselves majoring in Business Administration.

Jack and Lee quickly became best friends, often double dating, traveling together to observe sporting events out of the area, commiserating over relationships that went sour, and discussing the possibility of seeking employment with the same company upon graduation.

As that day approached, it became evident that both Jack and Lee were more interested in eventually starting their own business than they were in working for someone else. With both having worked in the construction field before entering college, and during their summer breaks, they decided to forego the expected suit and tie employment and obtained jobs with Lang Construction in Jack's hometown.

Teddy Lang, a childhood friend of Jack's, took over his father's construction company upon his passing, and was more than happy to have Jack and Lee join his crew, knowing all the while that once they gained the necessary experience, they would become his competition.

So, at the age of 27, with their heads full of idealistic dreams, big plans for the future, and five years of experience in running crews for Teddy Lang, TC Construction was born.

Initially, Jack and Lee found running their own business to be tedious and somewhat difficult. Their previous employment with Lang Construction kept them out in the field and subsequently oblivious to the day to day operating requirements. As such, it took them nearly a year before their office staff, and crews were working like a well-oiled machine. Fighting the urge to give up, as many in the field suggested, both Jack and Lee pushed forward, making necessary changes as they went along.

Finally, in their second year of business, they were highly sought after for both residential and business construction.

Both Jack and Lee were currently single. Lee talked about a special woman he had met at a convention and although they had discussed one flying either up or down to visit the other, it never materialized.

Jack, on the other hand had shoved any need for a romantic relationship aside many months ago, having tired of the shallow, self-absorbed women he seemed to encounter. His last semi-serious relationship was with Gabby Pendleton, a 28-year-old daddy's girl who got anything she desired from her shipping magnate father, leading Jack to assume that women of privilege were probably alike.

As her birthday and their one-year dating anniversary approached, Gabby was certain that Jack would propose. The week prior, he had installed a fire pit in the back yard of the elaborate home purchased for her by her father, and the weekend before Jack took her on a trip to Balderdash Cellars Winery, but no marriage proposal was made.

Although she initially held her disappointment when Jack took her out for dinner on the night of her actual birthday, as their meal ended and she saw so engagement ring at the bottom of her champagne flute, her disapproval flowed freely.

"Jack, where do you see our relationship going?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, we've been dating for a year now; do you see anything permanent in our future?"

Even though he seemed to have always eluded the serious relationship talk with Gabby, it was apparent that she was now expecting a proposal. Jack tried to explain, as best he could, that although he cared about her, they had only been dating for a year, and in his mind that was not long enough to make such an important lifelong commitment.

He felt that his explanation was reasonable, but quickly realized that she did not feel the same when her flute filled with champagne was flung in his direction, drenching his face. They never spoke again, and the contract that was scheduled to be signed for TC Construction to add on to Pendleton Shipping took a quick nosedive.

That was nearly a year ago, and Jack could not say that there had been any woman who piqued his interest since that time.

Savannah, Georgia…

Down deep in the heart of the south, Elizabeth Thatcher, age 29, sat in her townhouse contemplating the changes that were quickly coming her way.

Seven years ago, at the age of 22, Elizabeth, a graduate of Savannah State University with a degree in early childhood education began working in the Savannah School System. Teaching second grade, and heading an after-school reading program, her enthusiasm for this career path waned slightly with each passing year. For six years Elizabeth poured her heart and soul into her classroom, but she could not deny that she yearned for more.

Although she loved working with the children, Elizabeth longed to be her own boss. On weekends and during school holidays, she spent time, helping her dear friend, Rosie Levoux, a 'home stager,' and thoroughly enjoyed the creative aspect of the real estate market.

Elizabeth's part-time career as a "stager" quickly began to take on a life of its own, one that she thoroughly enjoyed; however, she was not yet willing to give up her teaching career.

At the age of 27, Elizabeth had a conversation with Rosie that would change both of their lives.

"Hey, that huge house over on Maple is for sale. I spoke to Hadley Grainger today about staging it," Elizabeth advised.

"Elizabeth, that's wonderful, but I have some news that I need to tell you," Rosie began.

"Is something wrong?" she asked as she took a seat in the chair opposite Rosie's desk.

"Do you remember that Real Estate convention I went to in Cape Cod last year?" Rosie asked.

"Of course, I do. You brought back some really good ideas."

"Well, I told you about that guy I met, Lee Coulter, right?"

"You haven't spoken about him in a while, Rosie, but yes, you did tell me about him. So, what's up?"

"Well, I didn't tell you that we'd been talking on the phone and facetiming because I didn't think you'd approve."

"I'm sorry that you felt that way. Rosie, I just want you to be happy, but you also need to be careful because there are a lot of weirdos out in the world."

"See, that's why I didn't tell you, because I figured you'd think he was a freak or something."

"Rosie, if you tell me that he's a good guy, I guess I'll have to trust that he is."

"He co-owns a well-established construction company in Cape Cod, and…and we've been talking about me moving north."

"Rosie, are you serious? You're moving hundreds of miles away from home to be with a man you barely know?"

"Of course not…"

"Well then, what am I missing here?"

"Elizabeth, the real estate market is booming up on the Cape, and I was offered a job with Reynolds Real Estate, and Heather said that she had an opening for you too."

"Heather?"

"Stay with me on this, Elizabeth. Heather Reynolds is president of Reynolds Real Estate."

"Rosie, I can't leave. I have a teaching job…I mean, staging is just a side business that I thought we would end up growing together."

"Well, it's a sideline for you; it's my career, and I think I'll advance further and faster up on the Cape."

"I know how important your job is to you, but are you sure it's just the job?"

"Elizabeth, I'd never leave my home to follow some guy, especially one I don't really know," Rosie's tone was stern. "I want to be successful, and I believe I am here, but this area can only take me so far. I mean, think about it…the Kennedy's live up there."

"Yes, they do, but I'd be very surprised if you were hired to stage their mansion."

"Well, I appreciate you having such faith in me."

"Rosie, that's not it; they aren't going anywhere, so there's no need for their mansion to be staged."

"Oh, I know that; I was just saying that it's a wealthy area where a lot of important people live, and I want to be there."

"I understand. When are you leaving?" Elizabeth did understand, but she still could not hide her disappointment.

"We have a few houses to stage, so I don't think I could leave before next month at the earliest."

Elizabeth got up from her seat, walked around Rosie's desk, pulled her up from her chair, and as their eyes watered, she pulled her dear friend in for a hug.

"I love you, Rosie. I want you to be happy, and if this move is really what you want, then I say…go for it."

"Really, you're not mad?"

"I'm sad, and I'm going to miss you, but you can't worry about anyone else; if you feel it in your heart, then it has to be the right thing," Elizabeth stepped back and wiped her eyes.

"Will you come and visit?"

"Rosie, we're best friends; whether I'm physically with you or not, that will never change. So, I will visit whenever possible, and remember, it goes both ways, so you need to come home when you can."

"I promise, I will…"

"And no man will ever come between us, right?" Elizabeth threw out the possibility.

"Never…I mean, I like Lee, but talking over the phone and seeing someone regularly in person are two different things. And Elizabeth, I am moving for my career, not because of a man."

"I believe you, and I hope everything, both personal and professional works out for you."

Six weeks later and a few months before her 28th birthday, Elizabeth found herself in a situation that she never expected. Rosie, her best friend and the one she could always lean on for support and advice, although most of the time it wasn't requested, was pulling out of her driveway in her red, Ford Expedition towing a U-Haul with all of her belongings.

Financially, Elizabeth's father, William Thatcher, President and CEO of Thatcher Industries, had given her the substantial down payment for the townhouse as a graduation gift, and she welcomed Rosie shortly thereafter into her home as a roommate.

Elizabeth did not need Rosie's rental contribution to make ends meet, so truly watching her best friend driving away brought on emotional sadness, not economic hardship.

Elizabeth never realized how much she enjoyed sharing a townhouse with Rosie until she was gone, and the silence inside was deafening. She could not help feeling sad; Rosie always seemed to bring life to any occasion, and Elizabeth deeply missed the companionship.

As days, and weeks passed, Elizabeth tried to busy herself with work, both teaching and staging properties. She began working with Hadley Grainger as her primary "stager," and although she enjoyed her busy and quite hectic life, she was still lonely and missed her dear friend.

Weeks turned into months. Elizabeth started a new school year, and celebrated her 28th birthday with her family, but her best friend was noticeably absent. Although Elizabeth and Rosie talked often via phone and face chat, trips to visit each other never seemed to materialize.

Elizabeth was working hard, but shortly after Rosie left town, she found time to date Joshua Herald, a local dentist and longtime friend. Although Elizabeth kept her options open, she never got that 'tingly' feeling when his hand touched hers, but she had to admit that the extra care he gave her teeth was much appreciated.

As the new year began, Elizabeth accompanied Joshua to dental functions, and family gatherings where a date was expected, but the relationship never seemed to grow past that.

Having always wanted a dog of her own, Elizabeth decided that now was the perfect time to incorporate a puppy into her life. She desperately needed the companionship and felt that a puppy would give her something else on which to focus her energies. So, after much thought, consideration and research, she found a local breeder who offered her pick of the litter, which consisted of one girl and three boys.

Elizabeth told no one that she was planning to get a puppy, assuming most people would try to talk her out of it because of the time and responsibility that she would need to obligate to him or her.

Most of her friends, well, at least those who were not married, enjoyed partying and travelling, dropping everything on a spur of the moment chance to get away. A puppy, in most of her friend's eyes, would prevent Elizabeth from having any fun, a view that she wholeheartedly disagreed with.

Elizabeth did not understand many of her friends who seemed to take each day, job, friendship, opportunity, or disappointment as if it made no difference in the grand scheme of life. They tried to encourage her to live for the moment and believe that everything would fall into place as it was meant to.

She found that isolating herself from that group allowed her to focus on what she felt was important in life, but the isolation simply made her lonelier.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts…

Rosie, being quite gregarious, settled quickly into her new life. There were so many changes, physically, professionally and personally, but she accepted everything as it came, and during her weekly phone calls to Elizabeth, seemed quite happy. Elizabeth did not like to admit it, but she was a bit jealous.

Rosie talked endlessly about the man who had captured her heart…Lee Coulter.

"Rosie, you've only been dating him for months not years; so, is that really long enough to truly know someone?"

"So, you are saying that you need to date someone for years to know that they are the one for you?"

"I don't know what I'm saying, but remember, we always said that we wouldn't let a man come between us," Elizabeth responded.

"He hasn't come between us," Rosie responded.

"But we haven't seen each other since you left Savannah. Does he have anything to do with that?"

"Absolutely not; I'm just really busy here," Rosie replied. "Enough about my love life, are you still dating Joshua?"

"We aren't talking about me. We're talking about you, and I just don't want to see you fall too fast for someone who may end up hurting you."

"Is that a 'no'? Please say it's a 'no.'"

"Why don't you like him?" Elizabeth asked.

"Elizabeth, you have always told me, for as long as I've known you, that you will feel electricity and sparks will fly when you meet the man of your dreams," Rosie stated, bringing back memories of prior conversations regarding love and romance. "I have to say I feel it with Lee; but do you still feel that way?"

"I've grown up and I've met a lot of men, and I have to say there haven't been any sparks. So, no, I think it was a fairytale that I thought would come true for me," Elizabeth admitted. "I no longer think that sparks and electricity will accompany the relationship that's meant for me."

"Well, you and Joshua are going nowhere, and I think he's just holding you back."

Elizabeth could hear Rosie sigh over the phone before she continued, "Look Elizabeth, you've been dating him since last summer; he never goes out of his way for you, and I think he just enjoys having 'eye candy' on his arm."

"You haven't really been around, so how do you know?" Elizabeth asked.

"You forget that I've known Joshua for as long as you have. I know what he's like, and you and I talk; whether you know it or not, I hear in your voice that you're dissatisfied with that relationship."

"Oh Rosie, please tell me how you really feel…"

"I just did; I don't care for him, and he's not the man for you. But if you tie yourself to him, you won't be open to the right man when he comes along."

"Oh, and you have someone who's perfect for me?"

"Lee has several wonderful friends; they are all really nice guys, but one of them in particular would be perfect for you."

"Look Rosie, I appreciate it, but I can find my own man if you don't mind. Besides, let's get back to you; I'm just worried about you giving so much to someone so fast…"

"Are you jealous?" Rosie asked.

"Me…jealous, of course not. I'm just worried about you."

"Well Elizabeth, I didn't think I'd ever say this, but it's been almost a year since we've seen each other. Why…?"

"I'm sorry Rosie. I think when you went north and I stayed here, it's hard to get our schedules working together. I mean, with school obligations, not being able to take extra days off before or after holidays, and family stuff, our schedules just…"

"I do understand how it happens, but don't you think that maybe you need to come up here for a visit. Then you will find out for yourself that Lee is everything I've said that he is."

"I do need to come up for a visit, and I'm sorry if my questioning everything upsets you. I just know that you tend to fall hard and fast."

"Elizabeth, Lee is perfect…"

"Rosie, no one is perfect…"

"Okay, well he's perfect for me."

"Well, I'll have to take your word for that."

"So, are you and Joshua still dating…you never answered me."

"No, we haven't been out for several months."

"What happened?"

"Rosie, I think I just realized that I want something more out of a relationship than just hanging out. We never talked about important subjects; actually, we never really talked. I don't think he knows my favorite color, how I drink my coffee, or what toppings I like on my pizza…you know, even little things."

Elizabeth continued, "Truthfully, you were right, I don't see a future with him," she admitted. "So, we mutually agreed that we'd step back for a bit and see what happens."

"Oh no, so it wasn't a clean break?"

"Well, he's free to see someone if he wants and so am I."

"So, are you?" Rosie asked.

"Am I what?"

"Dating anyone?"

"Nope; I'm on a dating hiatus…"

"Okay, so when are you coming?" Rosie asked.

"How about over the Memorial Day weekend? That way I can come up on Friday after school and I don't have to come home until Monday."

"That's perfect. I'll talk with Lee and see who we can set you up with…"

"Uh, did you not hear what I just said…I can find my own man, thank you very much…"

"Okay, no set ups," Rosie stated with a deceptive smile and several fingers crossed.

"Can you pick me up at the airport?"

"Sure, just let me know when your plane is coming in."

"Okay, I'll make the reservations, and Rosie, I'm looking forward to seeing you. I've missed our nightly talks."

"Me too, but maybe you'll come up here and won't want to go home…"

"Well, I still have a teaching job that I'm contracted for."

"Yes, but you haven't signed your contract for next year yet, have you?"

"No, but they'll be sending them out by the beginning of June."

"Elizabeth, if they send them out earlier, please don't obligate yourself to another contract until you come up here."

"I'm not making any promises. I mean, I'm settled here and…"

"And nothing. This place is amazing. There is so much to do, parties to attend, cultural events, and girl…the men are amazing."

"What, do they grow them better up in Cape Cod than they do in Savannah? I mean, at least the men you meet here are southern gentlemen."

"Well, I don't know about that, but the guys I've met here are really sweet, I mean, there's one friend of Lee's in particular who is gorgeous, sweet, a hard worker, kind, considerate, and…"

"Sounds like a Boy Scout."

"That's the kind you like, isn't it?"

"Well, actually…yes."

"I can hook you up with him while you're here. I don't think he's seeing anyone."

"Rosie, I'm flying up to spend time with you, not some guy I don't know."

"All I'm saying is that you're missing out," Rosie mentioned.

"I'll take my chances," Elizabeth was quick to announce. "Oh, I do have some important news…"

"Well, it's not about a man, so what is it?"

"I got a puppy…"

"Really, oh did you get a cute little puppy you can carry around in your purse?"

"Uh no, that's not my type. I got a yellow Labrador puppy. His name is Cruise."

"Oh, don't tell me; you named him after Tom Cruise in Top Gun."

"Well, you know that it's one of my all-time favorite movies; that and Sleepless in Seattle."

"Send me a picture," Rosie asked.

"I will."

"If you have a puppy, you can't fly with him; I'm sure he's too big."

"No, I won't bring him. My parents love having him over, so I'll get them to watch him."

As their call ended, Elizabeth looked through her phone and sent Rosie a text which included a picture of her four-legged pride and joy.

Immediately upon receiving the text, Rosie sent a response… "Did u get all 4…?"

"No, the 1 who is sleeping is my boy. Those r his littermates…"

"He's cute. Is he playful…?"

"Yes, but when he gets tired, he falls over wherever he is and sleeps. I love him…"

It was now Thursday afternoon, the day before the start of the Memorial Day weekend, and Rosie was expecting Elizabeth to fly in the following day. Although she knew that Elizabeth wanted to spend time with her, she felt the need to introduce her to her friends, including her boyfriend's best friend, Jack Thornton.

Rosie was on her way to 132 Shore Road in Chatham to check on the staging of this particular property when she decided to swing by TC Construction and see Lee. If truth be told, although she wanted to see Lee, she was hoping to pull Jack into a blind date with her dear friend.

Stepping inside the building, she was greeted by Tammy, the receptionist.

"Hi Rosie, Lee isn't in…"

"Oh, shoot. Is Jack in?"

"Yeah, he's in his office talking with…"

Rosie was already on her way to Jack's office before Tammy could advise her that he was in a meeting with Tyler Markham, a local real estate agent.

"Hey Jack…" Rosie stated as she burst through the door, preferring to catch people off guard, and this was no different. "Oh, hi Tyler; how are you?"

"Hey Rosie; I still want to meet with you about staging some houses for me," Tyler offered as he stood up from his seat.

"Well, I'm working for Heather Reynolds right now, so until I go out on my own, I can't help you," Rosie advised. "Actually, I'm trying to get my best friend to come up here from Savannah and work with me. She is an awesome stager."

Rosie glanced over at Jack, "I really stopped by to see if you were available for dinner on Saturday night."

"With you and Lee; no thanks, I'm not interested in being a third wheel," Jack advised.

"No, that's the thing, my best friend is flying in on Friday for the weekend, and I was hoping to introduce you two," Rosie explained.

"Thanks, and maybe I'll meet her while she's in town, but I don't do blind dates…"

"Jack, please…"

"Rosie don't even try. I have been out on three blind dates in my lifetime, none of which turned into anything, so no…I'm not interested in a set up for dinner."

"I'll go; I'd love to meet your friend…" Tyler, the handsome and quite successful realtor, jumped in.

"You aren't dating anyone?" Rosie asked.

"Nope; I've been too busy with the real estate market to even be interested in anyone."

"So, if you don't have time, why are you going?" Jack asked.

"Jack, she didn't say we had to get married. I think I can use this as an opportunity to network, and have a nice dinner with a beautiful woman…she is beautiful, right?"

Having known Tyler since she arrived on The Cape, she was not aware of any information that would make her leery of him. "Yes, she is. Okay, it's a date…"

"Where are we going for dinner? I want to know how to dress…" Tyler remarked.

"We're going to Fisherman's View, so you can dress casual," Rosie responded.

"Okay, where do you want me to meet you?" Tyler asked.

"Just come by here. We'll meet you, let's say…hmm, how about 6:15?"

"Perfect, I'll be here. Oh, do you have a picture of her?" Tyler inquired.

Reaching into her purse, oh sorry, I left my phone in the car, but let's just say, you won't be sorry," Rosie added.

After Tyler left, Rosie pulled her keys from her pocket, "You are going to wish you came with us for dinner. I'm telling you that Elizabeth is a real catch."

"If she is really a catch, why is it that she's still available?"

"Well Jack, from what I know of you, I think you're a catch and yet you're still available."

"Well, thank you for thinking of me, and I'm sure that your friend is wonderful, but I would just prefer to find a woman on my own, okay?"

"Well, let me know how that works out for you, because from where I stand, it's going nowhere."

Rosie continued, "I'm sorry Jack. It's just that Lee told me about Gabby; I have met her, and she isn't right for you. But I have been here nearly a year, and I don't know of any woman who has caught your eye during that time."

"Well, that should let you know that I haven't met the woman of my dreams yet."

"Is that really a thing?" Rosie asked.

"Rosie, I don't know if it is, but I won't settle for a good relationship; I want an exceptional relationship, and if she isn't out there, then I guess I'm meant to remain single."

"Okay, I'm sorry; I won't bring Elizabeth's name up to you again."

"Thank you, but that also goes for setting me up in the future with anyone else, okay?"

"I totally understand, and it's not a problem…" she stated as she turned to leave the office. Oh, you are going to be one disappointed man after you meet her…

Savannah, Georgia…

Finally, the Memorial Day weekend was upon her. Elizabeth was packed and ready to head for the airport once her final student was safely on the bus or in the custody of their parent during the pick-ups at the front of the school.

Cruise was in the custody of his grand-pawrents, and Mrs. Thatcher could not have been happier to see him. Sadly, the family dog, Captain, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had recently passed away at the age of 14, and she was finding the house to be quiet…too quiet.

With her last student safely on the bus, Elizabeth headed for the parking lot and her fun weekend trip with her best friend. However, she had to first navigate the airport and flying, neither of which she enjoyed.

As she walked from the parking structure toward the airport, she passed through the serene courtyard and the beautiful Flight Fountain. She stepped into the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, headed for the kiosk, hoping to bypass the long lines at the ticket counter. Understanding that she was an intelligent woman, Elizabeth could not fathom why she always seemed to be the person who had trouble with the machines that were intended to make her life easier.

Moving from the kiosk to the ticket counter, the line seemed to move relatively fast, and she was finally on her way up the escalator, and toward the TSA checkpoint.

Thankfully, Elizabeth breezed through the metal detector, but was required to throw out her unopened bottle of water, having forgotten that she had stuck it in her purse on her way out of school.

She sat at Gate B12 waiting on the announcement to board the plane. While waiting, she sent Rosie a text…

"At the airport. Waiting to board. Can't wait 2 c u…"

"I'll be at the airport…I've missed u so much…"

"We're boarding. I've missed u 2…"

"Safe travels; c u soon…" Rosie texted, but she assumed that Elizabeth was boarding as she received no response.

Boston, Massachusetts…

Hours later, Elizabeth made her way through Logan International Airport, and amid the crowd of people, Rosie stood out. She broke through the masses and rushed to Elizabeth as they hugged and each one cried.

The women talked non-stop during the hour and a half drive back to Rosie's 2-story condominium located on the waterfront on the east end of town.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts…

"WOW, what a view…" Elizabeth was amazed as she stood on the deck overlooking the water. "This is beautiful."

"Well, you know you can move up here and stay with me. I mean, you let me move in with you, it's the least I can do, and I have plenty of room," Rosie pushed as they stepped inside.

Elizabeth found Rosie's 2-story, two-bedroom condo to be bright and cheery. Although it was now nearly dark outside, she could only assume that with windows along the back of the residence, the warm, morning sunshine had the ability to be quite welcoming.

The condo was not huge, but obviously large enough for Rosie and someone else, whether that be a roommate or her current love interest, Lee Coulter. However, at this point, Rosie was still living alone.

The following morning, Elizabeth and Rosie say out on the deck overlooking the water as they talked and enjoyed their coffee.

"So, how's school going?" Rosie asked.

"Oh, it's fine. I mean, I just love the kids, but, well you know, I really love staging houses, and I was even considering getting my real estate license, because then I could do it all," Elizabeth admitted.

"You could get your real estate license and come up here. We could open Levoux and Thatcher Properties, or Levoux and Thatcher Staging and Real Estate," Rosie suggested.

"Or it could be Thatcher and Levoux Staging and Real Estate," Elizabeth provided her own suggestion.

"So, you'll move up here?"

"Rosie, I was joking. I cannot just up and leave home. My whole life is in Savannah," Elizabeth reminded her.

"Well, not your entire life, because I'm up here…"

Trying to change the subject Elizabeth asked, "What are we doing today?"

"I figured we could visit Bristol Beach and then head over to Hyannis Port. Maybe tomorrow we could go to Martha's Vineyard."

"That sounds like fun. I've heard that Martha's Vineyard is amazing," Elizabeth responded as the two women got up, put their coffee cups in the sink and headed out to Rosie's SUV.

As the women settled into the SUV, Rosie advised, "Lee is taking us to dinner tonight at Fisherman's View, it's a popular seafood restaurant."

"Well, I'm looking forward to meeting the man who has apparently stolen your heart," Elizabeth glanced in Rosie's direction and smiled.

"It's on the water, and Lee and I have been there when huge yachts have gone through the canal," Rosie advised. "I'm telling you, Elizabeth, the real estate market is big up here."

"So, tell me about Lee's business," Elizabeth asked.

"It's a well-established construction company that he started with his best friend. See, Lee works with his best friend, and you could come up here and work with me since we're best friends," Rosie continued to push, the intensity of which was becoming stronger. "You ought to meet Jack; he's a great guy."

"I'm sure he is, but just remember, I don't like set ups, okay…?"

"Huh… oh look at the beach," Rosie quickly changed the subject.

They parked the SUV and started walking through the sandy path. Elizabeth stopped to take a picture of a deep pink flower growing all alone amidst dunes full of sea grass before walking out onto the beach.

Elizabeth was mesmerized as she watched the waves roll in…

"Bear, where are you?" the sound of the waves washing onshore was cut by a woman's voice, frantically calling out to someone or something.

Glancing behind her, Elizabeth observed a young girl running on the path over the dune with a leash wrapped around her hand. Catching a glimpse of her elusive companion, a black Labrador Retriever, her expression turned frantic when the dog again took off.

"Come here, Buddy…" Elizabeth called out as she squatted down, bringing herself to the dog's eye level.

"Grab him…" the girl yelled out as the dog came up to Elizabeth and took a seat on the sand in front of her.

Holding his collar, Elizabeth called the girl over. "What happened?"

"We were crossing the street and a car flew passed and blew his horn. It scared the bejeebers out of me and Bear got off his leash and took off. Thanks for catching him," the girl responded.

"Well, I didn't really catch him; he actually ran up to me," Elizabeth responded as she released Bear's collar, gave him a pat on the back and watched as he and "his person" walked away.

They walked along the beach as Rosie listened to Elizabeth talk about how the beach is her place to go to reboot, and refresh.

"See, if you move here, you're right at the beach," Rosie advised her.

Elizabeth stopped walking and glanced in Rosie's direction, "You did used to live in Savannah, right?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Rosie, did you forget all of the trips we have made to Tybee Island? I mean, it's about a twenty-minute drive from Savannah; it's not like the beach is hundreds of miles away."

"Oh, I know, but this beach is nicer; the water is beautiful, and it's great to swim in."

"Oh, so you're using that as a reason for me to move up here?"

"Is it working?"

"No, because in Savannah, I have use of the beach for more of the year than you do up here. So, maybe you need to think of something else."

"There are a lot of good-looking men up here."

Elizabeth laughed, "Oh, does that mean that good-looking men are only found in certain parts of the country?"

"Come on Elizabeth, you know what I mean…"

"I'm sorry; I'm just teasing you. But Rosie, I'm not moving here to find a man; there are plenty of nice southern gentlemen in Savannah."

"Okay, I won't bring it up any more…today, but Elizabeth, please think about it…"

The two women walked up the path and across the street to Rosie's SUV and were quickly on their way to Hyannis Port.

Elizabeth's eyes were fixated out her window as the beautiful scenery of the Cape passed by. Entering the traffic circle, Elizabeth smiled when she observed the sign welcoming them to "HYANNIS." She had to admit, the houses were big and beautiful, and Rosie probably had a point about the ability to build a business there.

"Do you know where the Kennedy's live?" Elizabeth asked.

"I think everyone up here knows where their compound is…we'll be there shortly."

"What, you can go there?"

"Yes, it's on the water, but it's in a neighborhood," Rosie advised. "I mean, you can't get up to their house to knock on the door or anything, but you can see it."

"WOW, I guess I never thought their place would be in a neighborhood."

Ten minutes later, Rosie pulled down a side street and passed Merchant Lane, the road leading to the Kennedy Compound. They parked and Elizabeth got out. Doing what tourists do, she pulled out her camera and started clicking away.

The Kennedy Compound consists of three houses on approximately six acres along the Nantucket Sound, and is surrounded, at least the area within view, by a four-foot white picket fence.

"WOW, this is like a place of history here. I am in awe of how beautiful it is," Elizabeth remarked.

Rosie started walking back to the SUV, "Let's go across the Sound and you can get another view of it."

Within a short drive, Rosie and Elizabeth crossed to the other side of the Nantucket Sound and took in a heart pumping view of the home of former President of the United States, John F. Kennedy.

Also, in their travels, Rosie pointed out Saint Francis Xavier Church, "That's where the Kennedy's go to church."

"Oh my…that's beautiful," Elizabeth responded.

"Oh, while we're out here, let me take you by and show you something very special to me…"

After a short drive they pulled onto Associates Road, a small residential area on Chapoquoit Island, set above the waters of West Falmouth Harbor and Buzzards Bay.

"Isn't it gorgeous? This is a house that Lee and Jack renovated, and I staged," Rosie remarked.

"They did it all by themselves? Impressive…" Elizabeth teased.

"You know what I mean. But get this…there is a contract on this property and at closing, Heather pays me a percentage of the company's commission. So, I'm looking at making $50,000."

"$50,000?"

"Right, I told you that there is a great living to be made here," Rosie confirmed.

"WOW, I had no idea. That knocks the $5,000 I received from Hadley at my last closing."

They walked toward the classic Shingle Style Cape as Rosie, still trying to encourage Elizabeth to move north added, "You look at this place and if this doesn't blow your mind, I don't know what will…" Rosie stated as she retrieved the key from the lock box.

Elizabeth found it hard to catch her breath as she entered the expansive home. One of the many features that caught her eye was the timeless architectural details from two fireplaces that she felt Rosie had captured perfectly in her staging of the property. The more she walked around, the more she fell in love with everything she saw.

The home was built in 1936, but TC Construction had recently come in and completely renovated it, leaving no stone unturned. The owners had moved out the previous year as they mulled over what to do with the property. Since it was vacant, all the decorating came from Rosie's vision for the property. Elizabeth loved the chef's kitchen, cozy den/living room, the five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and the breathtaking view from every window in the house of what she assumed would be boats sailing in and out of port.

They drove back to Rosie's condo to get ready for dinner. "I didn't bring anything fancy, are jeans okay?"

"Oh yes, Fisherman's View has the best food, but it's also a laid-back environment, which is a major plus," Rosie advised.

"Is Lee coming here?" Elizabeth asked.

"No, we're going by his office and we'll go from there," Rosie responded. She watched as Elizabeth disappeared to get dressed, totally unaware that she had a date for the evening.

A short while later, Elizabeth walked out of the guest room wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a black camisole with lace along the V-neck, and a black and white plaid "Boyfriend" shirt.

"You look nice, but you know, I have the perfect shirt for those jeans…" Rosie commented before running into her bedroom to retrieve the garment.

Walking out of her room, she handed Elizabeth a black, draped cowl neck with an open back and a tie closure. "Here, this will look perfect on you and with those jeans."

"You never cease to amaze me," Elizabeth remarked through a harsh breath. "I'm not wearing that to meet your boyfriend. I believe that says much more than 'I'm happy to meet you.' It's more like 'let's skip dinner and head over to the hotel…'"

Elizabeth grabbed her purse, "That's certainly not the impression I want to leave with your boyfriend."

"What about yours?"

"What about my what?"

"Your boyfriend?"

"Rosie, stop…what are you talking about? I told you Joshua and I aren't dating right now," Elizabeth continued toward the door as Rosie followed close behind.

"I know, but there will be a fourth person joining us for dinner."

Elizabeth stopped and spun on her heels, "What do you mean?"

"Well, he's a really nice, and good-looking guy…"

"Rosie, what did you do?"

"Elizabeth, he's a real estate agent and a really nice guy. His name is Tyler Markham; I told him about you and he's looking forward to meeting you. Please, you can't back out…"

"I'm not going to back out. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but please, I know we've discussed this before, don't set me up. I'll find my own dates, okay?"

"Okay, I'm sorry; I just want you to have a great time, and I really do think you'll enjoy spending time with Tyler."

"Okay, come on, let's get this over with."

"Elizabeth, please don't be angry. Just pretend that we're at a party and you can socialize with everyone, but Tyler seems to stand out."

"Well, I'll be the judge as to whether or not he stands out…come on!"

On the way to TC Construction Rosie commented, "Hmm, looks like we may get a little rain."

"That's okay, I have my jacket."

Once in the parking lot, Elizabeth noticed the matching F-350 4-door trucks, one in red and one in blue. "Nice trucks…"

"Those are the company trucks. Lee has the red one, you know just like my SUV, and Jack's is the blue one."

They were halfway to the door when Rosie realized that she had forgotten her cellphone. As Elizabeth waited on Rosie to retrieve her phone it started to rain.

"Go on inside, and I'll be right in," Rosie yelled as Elizabeth pulled the hood on her jacket up over her French braided hair and ran for the door.

Stepping inside, the office seemed empty as she walked around glancing at the various pictures on the wall, knick knacks on the tables, and a vase on what she assumed was the secretary's desk.

Pulling the hood away from her head, she leaned over the vase of orange roses and inhaled deeply, "WOW, you smell glorious. I don't think I have ever seen orange roses before. You are absolutely beautiful."

"Do you always talk to flowers?"

The sound of an unknown man's voice startled Elizabeth. She spun around as her arm hit the vase, knocking it over, shattering it and soaking the floor with its liquid contents.

"Oh, I'm so sorry…I'm so, so sorry," she blurted out as she squatted down and started to pick up the glass.

The man closed the distance, "That's okay; no harm done."

"No harm done; I broke this beautiful vase. I'll replace it; just let me clean it up," she stated as she continued to pick up the large pieces of glass.

"Please, I'll get that. I don't want you to cut yourself," he stated as he gently pulled her up.

"Too late," Elizabeth stated as several drops of blood dripped over the outside of her palm.

"Wait right here…" he stated as he disappeared, returning a moment later with a clear, wet cloth, antibiotic cream and a band-aid.

Elizabeth watched embarrassedly as he dabbed at the small cut on her hand, feeling the electricity pulse through her body. The attractive man glanced up and caught her eyes, feeling an unfamiliar spark that seemed to race through his body.

He wiped away the blood before placing a dot of antibiotic ointment on her skin and then topped it with a band-aid.

"Thank you…again, I'm so sorry," Elizabeth commented as she pulled her hand up to observe his handiwork. "Nice job."

"It's just a band-aid. You aren't going to sue us, are you?" he teased as he bent down and picked up all of the glass he could see.

"Of course not; it was my fault," she quickly responded.

Grabbing the hand held vacuum from the closet, he ran over the rug, pulling out the remainder of the glass slivers while Elizabeth glanced out the window at Rosie talking with a man that she assumed was either Lee or her date for the evening.

He sopped up the excess water from the floor, put the vacuum away and returned to the woman in the entryway that he did not yet know. "May I help you?" he asked.

Elizabeth spun around from the door, "Uh, no I'm waiting for Rosie. I mean, she's outside; she told me to get out of the rain."

"Do you generally need someone to tell you to get out of the rain?" he teased.

"Funny, and no I don't, but I was waiting on Rosie and it started raining so she said she'd meet me inside. But she seems to be tied up talking with someone.

Elizabeth looked back "Are you by any chance Tyler?" Elizabeth asked, and secretly hoped.

Suddenly, putting the fact that she was with Rosie together with the fact that she was asking about Tyler, he realized who she was, Oh God, I wish I were! "No, I'm sorry…I'm not," he stated as he stuck out his arm to shake her hand without introducing himself.

As their palms met, each caught the other's glance and somehow felt a surge of electricity that again seemed to flow through them.

Rosie rushed in the door. "That shower was odd; it's now sunny again," she stated as she glanced down at their hands still connected. "I see you've met…"

Elizabeth pulled her hand away, "Well not exactly."

"Jack, this is my best friend, Elizabeth Thatcher. Elizabeth, this is Lee's business partner, Jack Thornton." Rosie turned to Jack, "Is Lee busy?"

"He's on the phone, but he'll be out shortly. Can I get you anything, Elizabeth?" Jack asked.

"No thank you," she replied.

"I don't need anything either," Rosie responded.

"Oh, okay." Turning his attention back to Elizabeth, "Are you enjoying your visit?"

"Well, I just flew in last night, but we went to…" turning to Rosie she asked, "What was the name of that beach?"

"Bristol Beach," Rosie replied.

"Turning back to Jack she stated, "We went to Bristol Beach, and then Rosie took me to see the Kennedy Compound."

"Oh yes, that place is quite impressive," Jack responded.

Turning back to Rosie she asked, "Was that Tyler you were talking to outside?"

"Oh gosh no…he was asking for directions."

Suddenly the door opened and a handsome man with light brown hair and a perfectly trimmed beard wearing dark stonewash jeans, a black button-down shirt and a grey sport coat stepped inside.

"I'm not late, am I?" he asked.

Why did you have to show up? Jack thought.

"No Tyler, your timing is perfect." Turning to Elizabeth, Rosie stated, "Elizabeth this is Tyler Markham." Directing her attention to Tyler she continued with the introduction, "Tyler, this is my best friend in the entire world, Elizabeth Thatcher."

As Tyler and Elizabeth shook hands, she noticed that although she found Tyler to be model-like handsome, the electricity did not pulse through her body as it did when she and Jack touched.

No longer one to believe that the initial electricity meant anything substantial, Elizabeth directed her attention to Tyler, knowing that whether she was happy about it or not, he was her date for the evening.

Lee quickly joined the group and they chatted before leaving Jack alone when they walked out into the parking lot.

Jack watched out the window as Tyler helped Elizabeth up into the back seat of Lee's truck before taking a seat beside her. As the big red truck pulled out of the parking lot, Jack did not know why, but he wondered what it would have been like had he agreed to the blind date.

They pulled into Fisherman's View and walked along the boardwalk before joining a group of restaurant patrons on the patio to watch as Mark Cuban's yacht, Fountainhead, cruised in the Cape Cod Canal and into Sandwich Marina.

The restaurant was casual, but quite romantic with the soft lighting and music playing throughout. The group was seated at a table by the window, and as Rosie watched protectively over her dear friend, she had to admit it appeared that Elizabeth and Tyler were getting along well.

"So, Rosie told me that you live in Savannah. Were you raised there?" Tyler asked.

"Yes, born and raised…it's a beautiful city with old world southern charm," Elizabeth replied.

"I've never been there before, but maybe I'll come down and check it out sometime."

Elizabeth simply smiled.

The dinner conversation seemed to flow between the two couples as they discussed many topics, while leaving things like politics, and relationships alone.

Both men ordered lobster dinners, while Rosie chose seared scallops and risotto, and Elizabeth enjoyed authentic New England Clam Chowder.

Elizabeth felt comfortable with Tyler, but certainly did not see moving to Cape Cod for a man. So, unless there were other outstanding reasons, she assumed that she would simply return home, and visit a few times a year.

After dinner, the group left the restaurant as the VaVa II, a 155 foot yacht, which flies the Cayman Islands flag, with a helicopter, and a crew of 30, cruised out of the Sandwich Marina, and into Cape Cod Canal.

"See, I told you Elizabeth. This is the place to be to get our business to grow," Rosie pleaded.

"I don't know, Rosie. I just need to think about it," Elizabeth replied.

Reaching over and taking her hand, Tyler added in his two-cents, "I for one would really like to see you more. There's a lot of staging work here on The Cape."

Elizabeth allowed her hand to remain in his, "So Rosie has said, but I do have a life back in Savannah. I'm a schoolteacher and the staging work was just a sideline job for me."

Lee drove the foursome back to his office and was surprised when he observed Jack's truck still in the parking lot. As Rosie, Elizabeth and Tyler stood outside the truck, Lee stepped inside to make certain that everything was okay.

Finding Jack daydreaming at his desk, Lee startled him, "Jack…"

"Oh hi, I wasn't expecting you back so early," Jack responded.

"Is everything okay?"

"Oh yeah, I was just free tonight and thought I'd catch up on some paperwork. Did you have a nice time?"

"We always have a great time at Fisherman's View; I'm sorry you didn't come with us."

"I'm not one who likes being a fifth wheel," Jack replied. "So, did Elizabeth and Tyler hit it off?"

"Well, I don't know about them hitting it off, but they both seemed to have a nice time." Changing the subject, Lee added, "You should have seen the two yachts that cruised through the canal. One belonged to Mark Cuban."

Rosie walked inside to give Tyler and Elizabeth a chance to talk. Walking in the front door, Jack and Lee stepped into the entryway as Jack asked, "Where's Elizabeth?"

"She's with Tyler," Rosie replied.

"You left her alone with him? Rosie, she doesn't really know him," Jack responded as he glanced out the window.

"Jack, we know Tyler and he's a really nice guy; maybe a bit hung up on himself at times, but he's harmless."

Seeing that Elizabeth and Tyler were just talking he replied, "Okay, if you're sure…"

"You know Jack, for someone who didn't want to meet Elizabeth, you certainly are concerned about her," Rosie teased.

"It's not that I didn't want to meet her…"

"Oh, that's right; you just didn't want to go out with her."

"Rosie, that's not what I said. I just don't like blind dates."

"Looks to me like you're eating those words now, Jack."

"Okay, you two…stop. You know, you sound just like siblings," Lee interjected.

"That's not it, Rosie. I just want to make sure she's safe; I mean, I'm sure you want her to come back and visit, don't you?" Jack nervously replied.

"Oh, so you're thinking about me…that's sweet," Rosie walked with Lee back to his office, leaving Jack alone in the entryway.

Out in the parking lot, Tyler and Elizabeth stood by his car. Elizabeth always felt uncomfortable on first dates, because whether she was 16 or 28 there was always the question…would he try to kiss her, and if he did, did she really want him to?

Although they had just met, Elizabeth did find Tyler to be respectful, and not too pushy with affection. "Well, I guess I should get inside," Elizabeth commented, feeling much like the office was her home, and her father was watching out the window.

"I had a really nice time, Elizabeth. I'd like to see you again; when are you leaving?" Tyler asked.

"I fly out on Monday evening," she replied.

"Are you doing anything tomorrow evening?" he asked.

"Rosie had mentioned a cookout at her place, but I'm not sure if that's still the plan. Do you want to step inside with me, and I'll check with her?"

"Sure," he stated as they walked inside and observed Jack sitting at the secretary's desk.

"Where's Rosie," she asked.

"Down the hall and to the right in Lee's office," Jack replied.

"Thank you," she stated as she breezed past.

After she left the room Tyler took a seat on the sofa, "Hey, I've got to thank you for turning down this blind date. Elizabeth is beautiful, intelligent, and I've had the best evening."

"I'm glad…"

Elizabeth quickly returned to the entryway, "Rosie and I are going to Martha's Vineyard tomorrow, but she and Lee were planning on a cookout tomorrow night if you'd like to come."

"May I have your phone?" Tyler asked as he put his information into her contact list. Handing her his phone he suggested, "If you add your info we can stay in touch."

"Sure, I'll text you when I know what time…" Elizabeth stated as she added her information and then handed him his phone back.

"Let me know if I can bring anything," Tyler responded while Jack glanced back and forth as though he was at a tennis match.

Coughing, Jack obtained their attention. He smiled as Tyler took Elizabeth's hand and they walked outside. Standing at the front door, Tyler leaned in and kissed Elizabeth's cheek.

"I had a wonderful time tonight, Elizabeth. I'm sure that Rosie didn't give you much notice that I'd be your date for the evening, but I appreciate you going through with it," Tyler stated with a gentle smile.

"Thank you for a lovely evening. I'm glad that we met, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night," she replied.

Tyler lifted her hand up to his lips, "Good night and sleep well."

"You too…" she responded as she turned around and walked back inside the office where she observed Jack now sitting on the edge of the sofa in the waiting area 'reading' a magazine.

As Elizabeth walked by on her way back to Lee's office, she took the magazine, turned it right side up and whispered, "It's easier to read this way…"

After she left the room, Jack walked to the hallway and called out, "Lee, I'm heading home…"

Lee opened his door, "Hey, we're cooking out tomorrow night. Do you want to come?"

Jack tilted his head to the left signally Lee to step out into the hallway. "Thanks for the offer, but I'm not interested in being the only single person there," Jack stated, assuming the only people attending would be Lee, Rosie, Elizabeth and Tyler.

"Jack, Rosie said that she has invited a bunch of people, so you won't be the odd man out," Lee assured him.

"Okay, but tell her no set ups, okay?"

"Jack, she knows how you feel, but I'll remind her," Lee responded. "Have a good evening," Lee called out as he heard the front door close.

Jack climbed into his truck and headed home, wondering all the while why he could not seem to get this woman, he had barely met off his mind.

Lee locked up the building and followed the women back to Rosie's condo, making certain that they arrived safely. Elizabeth walked inside, giving Rosie and Lee some time alone to enjoy the clear star filled sky while sitting out on her deck.

Elizabeth walked into the guest room, changed into a pair of black plaid flannel pajama pants and a long sleeve black t-shirt, grabbed her journal from her bag and crawled into bed.

She opened her journal, flipped to the next blank page and did her best to convey the thoughts, feelings and emotions which currently filled her head…

"I sit back, dreaming of my life, where I am currently and where I expected to be. I am happy, but am I fulfilled? Sometimes I feel as though I'm stagnant, moving nowhere; afraid to take the chance, but envious of others who do.

Rosie threw caution to the wind, walked away from a successful career, sought personal and professional gains, and seems happier than I've ever seen her. Although she denies moving away for love, I suspect that was the driving force, and the mountains and valleys she had to cross along the way have gotten her to a place of complete contentment.

Although I have obligations at home, would I be happier if I cut those ties that bind and begin anew? Is it time to go in a different direction, seeking fulfillment in another career, and possibly finding love along the way? I'm not sure what will happen, but I do believe it is time to be brave enough to find the life I want, and courageous enough to chase after it."

**Knock, knock, knock**

"Come in," Elizabeth called out as she closed her journal.

"Hey, whatcha doing?"

"Nothing, just…"

"You still write in that thing?"

"Every chance I get. You ought to give it a try," Elizabeth suggested.

"So, what are you writing about?"

"Rosie, as long as I've known you, have I ever told you what I write about?"

"No, but can you say of it's good?"

"It is good…"

"Are you doing okay?" Rosie asked.

"I'm doing great. I've had the best time up here; I'm so glad I came to visit."

"I am too. You have to admit that there are a lot of opportunities here for professional and maybe more importantly, personal growth."

"It does seem as though there is a lot going on here and you do appear happy, but I suspect that man you're seeing has something to do with that."

"Isn't Lee great?"

"He seems like a really nice guy, and you two appear to be a perfect fit."

"I'm glad you like him. Did you like the restaurant?"

"It was great; the view, food, conversation, all of it was wonderful," Elizabeth responded. "Why didn't Jack and his wife go with us?"

"What makes you think he's married?" Rosie asked.

"Oh, I don't know; I guess I just assumed…forget I said anything."

"So, tell me, what did you think of him?"

"Who…Jack?"

"No, Tyler…"

"Oh, I'm sorry, we were talking about Jack. Tyler seemed nice, and he's coming to the cookout tomorrow."

"So, do you think you might consider moving up here?"

"Rosie, what happened to you not pushing anymore?"

"I just miss you so much, and we could have so much fun double dating…"

"Well, I'm thinking about it, but please let what happens with Tyler happen on its own, okay…no pushing. I mean, he's nice, but we've just met, and I can't say that sparks were flying with him, at least not yet."

"Oh Elizabeth, have you ever felt sparks when you've first met a man?"

"Actually, I have, but I'm at the point now that I'm not so sure that it means anything."

To be continued…
