A/N – I have been having a lot of trouble actually writing stuff lately. So many ideas and yet I just sit and stare at my outlines and can't seem to actually write.

So, I'm taking what I can get.

If you follow Gareth on twitter, you'll see where I got my inspiration.

Special Projects

It had been an extremely rough day… after sending the rest of the team home, Jack had spent most of the evening and night wandering the streets of Cardiff and gazing over the city from various rooftops. His mind and body finally calm, he returned to the Hub to, hopefully, rest.

Once in his quarters, he showered and relaxed on his camp bed. It wasn't too long before his eyes sprung open. There was some pounding or clanking noise. He listened… it was fairly regular sounding. It would stop for a while… then start up again. Finally, it stopped all together. As silence once more settled over the Hub, Jack made a mental note to ask Ianto about the noises in the morning.

Shortly after settling down once more, Jack was jolted by a loud grinding noise which was definitely not pipes or any other kind of normal explainable Hub sound.

He got up and pulled on his trousers and t-shirt before climbing the ladder to his office. The noise was much louder… echoing in the main hub area. At his desk, Jack pulled up the CC tv footage and scanned the hub for what could be making the noise. No alarms were sounding so it wasn't any kind of intrusion. He found nothing. Knowing much of the lower levels were empty and therefore didn't have cctv, Jack threw on his boots and left the office.

Jack followed the grinding noise, which like the pounding earlier, seemed to start and stop at regular intervals down into the lower levels. The rooms were larger here. Very quickly he saw a light in one of the side rooms. The source of the sounds was definitely coming from there. It was almost deafening as he approached the door.

Whatever he'd been expecting, it was certainly not what he saw when he stepped through the stone archway into the well-lit space.

Ianto Jones, dressed uncharacteristically in loose cargo shorts and a black t-shirt, was leaning over a wooden structure with an electric sander. Jack just stared. The room was full of neatly stacked wood and an assortment of carpentry tools.

During a break in the sanding Jack yelled to get the Welshman's attention.

"Ianto!"

The younger man turned, obviously startled.

"Jack… I thought you'd be out all night." He said putting the sander down and wiping his brow with his arm.

"Yeah, well… I thought you went home." He gestured towards the room. "What is all this?"

Ianto shrugged. "It's kind of my workshop."

"Your workshop?"

The younger man shrugged again and grabbed a bottle of water from the floor. He took a sip and spoke.

"Well, after you… left, we had a lot of rebuilding to do. A lot of it was structural so we couldn't do it ourselves. We got some contractors and retconned them after, of course." He looked at Jack, who nodded. "But, anyway… while they were working, I started asking them questions and got interested. I found that the work was actually quite relaxing. So, when they finished, I got my own set of tools and set up this workshop." He shrugged again. "You get up on roofs, I build stuff."

"So… what are you building?" Jack pointed to the… whatever it was… Ianto had been working on.

Ianto smiled. "Coffee bar." He stepped over to his creation. "It's all reclaimed wood. There's also going to be space for a wine fridge for Tosh." He started pointing out what he'd been doing.

Jack smiled. It looked great… Ianto didn't just have an eye for suits. This was excellent craftsmanship.

"So, have you built anything else?" Jack asked.

"Just some shelves and stuff like that. This is my first big project. I wanted to build a pergola, but it would ruin the aesthetic of the hub, don't you think?"

End

Reviews are love.

A/N – Yep... Gareth is quite the craftsman… built a fence… a pergola… and a bar.
