Chapter 1
The sun rose over the Pride Lands. Every animal knew what today was. They all started heading towards Pride Rock, where a charcoal-gray lion with a black mane was standing, waiting. Then a coffee colored lion with dusty brown hair walked up to the charcoal-gray lion. He lowered his head and bowed. The charcoal-gray lion smiled and nods at him. Then down below Pride Rock, the animals that gathered there parted ways to let another lion walk through. He was a wood colored lion with a mane the color of cedar. He climbed up Pride Rock and he congratulated the charcoal-gray lion. Then the charcoal-gray walked toward his mate, a dark-gray lioness. She had a cub in her paws. The wood colored lion looked down at the cub. The cub was a dark-gray with blue eyes. The wood colored lion smiled. He took out a fruit, opened it in half, and spread the juice on the cub's forehead. He then sprinkled a bit of sand which the cub sneezed. He picked up the cub by the scruff of the neck and took him to the edge of Pride Rock. He lifts the cub for the animals below to view. They all trumpeted, neighed, and howled. Then they bowed. The new prince of Pride Rock is here.
A gray mouse comes out of a hole. it scampers around until it was slammed down by a large paw.
"Life's not fair, is it?" said the rosewood colored lion with wine colored mane. He played around with the mouse he caught.
"You see I-well, I...shall never be king. And you...shall never see the light of another day. Adieu..." He was about to eat the mouse when he was interrupted by another lion.
"Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?" said a voice.
The rosewood lion did an annoyed sigh. "What do you want?" he asked.
"I'm here to announce that King Somnus is on his way. So you'd better have a good excuse for missing the ceremony this morning." said the coffee colored lion.
The mouse ran away and went back in its hole.
"Oh now look, Ignis; you've made me lose my lunch." said the rosewood lion.
"Hah! You'll lose more than that when the King gets through with you. He's as mad as a hippo with a hernia." Ignis said.
"Oooh...I quiver with fear." said the rosewood lion.
"Now Ardyn, don't look at me that way...Help!" Ignis yelled just as Adryn pounced on him.
Ardyn!" said a voice.
"Hm-hmm?" said the voice.
"Drop him." said the voice.
"Impeccable timing, Your Majesty." Ignis said.
Ardyn got off of Ignis.
"Why! If it isn't my big brother descending from on high to mingle with the commoners." Ardyn said.
"Aulea and I didn't see you at the presentation of Noctis." said Somnus.
"That was today?" Ardyn said. "Oh, I feel simply awful." He scraped his claws against the wall.
Ignis cringes at the sound.
"Must gave slipped my mind." Ardyn said, admiring his claws.
"Yes, well, as slippery as your mind is, as the king's brother, you should have been first in line!" Ignis said.
"Well, I was first in line...until the little hairball was born." Ardyn said.
"That "hairball" is my son...and you future king." Somnus said.
"Oh, I shall practice my curtsy." Ardyn said and he turned around to exit the cave.
"Don't turn your back on me, Ardyn." Somnus said warningly.
"Oh no, Somnus. Perhaps YOU shouldn't turn your back on me." Ardyn said over his shoulder.
With a roar, he ran and stopped in front of Ardyn, baring his teeth. "Is that a challenge?!"
"Temper, temper. I wouldn't dream of challenging you." Ardyn said.
"Pity. Why not?" Ignis said, standing next to Somnus.
"Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share. But, when it comes to brute strength...I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool." Ardyn said and he walked away.
Ignis sighed deeply. "There's one in every family, sire...Two in mine, actually. And they always manage to ruin special occasions."
"What am I going to do with him." Somnus said.
"He'd make a very handsome throw rug." Ignis said.
"Ignis!" Somnus chided.
"And just think! Whenever he gets dirty, you could take him out and beat him." Ignis said as he walked beside Somnus.
Somnus laughed at the thought.
