Authors note:
Hello everyone, welcome to my new project! Ever since watching the Gate anime a long time ago this story has been crawling around in the back of my mind. Now I've decided to actually put it down in writing and see how it develops. Since english isn't my primary language forgive me for not being as fluent in my writing as I should be but hopefully it is acceptable.
Please read these important notes before you start to read the story.
Events in this story will play out differently from the anime and other source material.
I will try to have characters from the original show up wherever it makes sense but I won't twist myself to make it work. Obviously due to the previous note I made the characters will have different dialogue from the anime. What I'm aiming to do is to take the characters of the anime and explore their views, thoughts and reactions to a different story then the anime. Hopefully it will work but I can't guarantee I will do them all justice.
There will probably be some changes regarding the setting/background in the story though for the most part I will try to keep it as close to the anime as possible.
The Empire's level of technology is basically what you can expect in modern society with the possibility for some changes since I'm going with a different universe. Those will be explained if that happens.
With all that said, hope you will enjoy the story!
I do not own the Gate universe, it's characters or any of the intellectual property. I'm merely borrowing it for this story.
Chapter 1 - The gate
The year is 2022 and the largest nation in the world, the Empire of Ordney, is currently locked in a war with their last remaining threat, the "Free Nations Alliance" (FNA). The Empire controls over half the world (60% to be more exact) and uses its ever growing military force to expand its borders.
One day, in the southern parts of the Empire, a large ancient building suddenly appears in the middle of the county capital of Drytol. Shortly after an enemy force appears out of the building. The enemy force consists of soldiers in historical armors which are similar to those from the Empire's earlier history. Alongside these troops monsters on both the ground and in the air appear and start killing civilians all over the city.
Police forces in the city and from all over the county do what they can to hold off the enemy and save as many civilians as they can until the imperial army arrives. Many civilians are taken through the gate and once the army takes back control of the city they are faced with something no one previously thought possible; people from other worlds. Struck with the fact that they were just attacked from another world and that there now is a gate to this new world right in one of their cities, the country must handle this new threat.
With over a thousand dead civilians and police officers and many people missing after the attack Empress Victoria Matisse formally declares war upon the Saderan Empire. The imperial army is ordered to prepare an invasion force, the Empire will bring this enemy to its knees and find those who have been taken through the gate. No one will stand in their way.
Empire of Ordney, county capital Drytol
Eight weeks after the attack on Drytol
Despite the sun having shown up just a short while ago in the horizon, the activity was high in the middle of the city. Settled along one of their previously heavily trafficked main streets was now a giant ancient building (or gate as they called it) that had been placed by some unknown force. This gate had shortly after the attack been secured by building essentially a large containment structure around it with massive doors that could only be controlled from this side.
Walking between the tanks and various APCs (armoured personnel carrier) and IFVs (infantry fighting vehicles) lined up in front of the gate, 34-year old Captain Jacob Rovelt could feel the sense of anticipation in the air. He recognized it from a long time ago when he was sent on an invasion to a (then) neighboring country after he had just left training. That was almost fifteen years ago, how much hadn't happened since then? He had never hoped to be in this situation again and yet here he was.
As he arrived at one of their transports he looked at it. It is the latest model of six-wheeled IFV Warrior3000-FW. They come equipped with an autocannon, auxiliary chain gun and grenade launcher and are widely used for transporting troops and supporting the infantry once deployed.
The Empire had a history of focusing on cavalry during its earlier years and this tradition still lives on in the form of a slight preference in using tanks whenever it can. Since tanks alone can't handle warfare the Empire has focused on mechanizing its infantry for transportation to the battles where they are needed. While both APCs and lighter scouting vehicles like jeeps are used for certain tasks the Empire makes it a point to come prepared for a fight.
Standing outside their transports were twelve members of squad Cilo-7 whom he would be commanding, Jacob noted that there were two faces he didn't recognize. Must be the newest members that would be arriving today.
Private Stefano Lison and Jesper Karlsen were now the two youngest members of the squad, both fresh out of training and none over 20 years old. Jacob couldn't help but wonder if he had looked that eager to show himself when he came out of training?
Jacob took second lieutenant Roland Vilnos aside, he was the only person taller and older (though only by two years) then him. His short black hair and defined jawline made him seem much more serious than he normally was, he had been pranked by that man more than once.
"Can you keep an extra eye on our two new recruits for a while? I didn't expect them to send fresh recruits through the gate given that we have no idea what we are going to be fighting."
"Sure thing captain, was going to do it anyway. How would it look on us if they went and got themself killed right out the gate?" the lieutenant laughed and scratched the back of his neck. Obviously he was joking. "Are you going to be fine though? I mean you did leave the fighting to go and train troops for a reason…"
Jacob looked down on his left hand, he was wearing the standard issue green gloves to his field uniform as all other soldiers and officers. While most only had them on when necessary he rarely took them off.
"To be frank I'd rather be with Elizabeth and Jane and perform my regular duties. I can't help but feel like I am abandoning my family, especially since I have no idea when or if we can go back." Jacob sighed heavily as he clenched his fists. "What I do wonder is why I was chosen to be sent through the gate. I haven't been fighting for three years and despite all my attempts at finding an answer all I get is silence."
Jacob knew he was being selfish, like other people didn't have family and friends who would be equally as affected as his if they were to die. Still, he wanted a reason for him being sent to this other world.
Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Roland who looked and nodded. He understood all too well, they had been friends for a long time.
A voice cut through their continued discussion when specialist Emelie Green, the squad medic, called out to them that it was time for the Empress' speech. She was one of the two females in his squad. In his short time since meeting her (four weeks ago) he had learned that Emelie worked as a nurse in one of the university hospitals in the northern part of the Empire, though he currently had forgotten the name of it. She had long auburn hair which was held in place in a bun on the back of her head.
They quickly made their way back to their transport where they would be listening to the Empress' speech over the radio as it was broadcasted over the Empire.
"Citizens of the Empire, in these trying times I'd like to thank each and every one of you for doing your jobs and contributing to our nation's continued well being. It is only through our dedicated work and sacrifice we can achieve the peace and stability that we all want."
As the Empress speech was broadcasted around the Empire, people from all over watched or heard her speak.
"Two months ago our understanding of the world was changed as a gate to another world opened in the middle of Drytol. What came out of the gate was nothing short of monsters and barbarians from our history books. Many people were brutally killed and the stories of what the barbarians did to us have been horrible. These barbaric acts won't be allowed to go unpunished. That is why I have ordered the formation of a "Special Task Force" to go through the gate today and bring the ones responsible for these crimes to justice."
All over the Empire people had stopped in whatever they were doing, when the Empress of Ordney speaks, everyone listens.
"But we won't satisfy ourselves with only that, this attack has also shown that there are other worlds that need our stability and order. We will not forsake these people to their barbaric society, we will give them the chance to change their ways or they will be destroyed."
"To the members of the Special Task Force, I wish to thank you for your bravery in stepping through the gate and meeting this enemy head on. Your exploration of a new world will be marked in history as the Empire's first step towards not only global peace, but universal. Be bold, be swift and most importantly, be decisive. We will all pray for your victory."
"Long live the Empire.".
As the Empress finished her speech, people all around Ordney spoke up in unison, though some higher than others:
"Long live the Empress!"
And so, the invasion of the new world began.
