"Deeks"
"I'm just saying, Kensi."
"Yes, I heard you. Every. Single. Time."
Sam and Callen exchanged looks with each other as they heard their teammates before they saw them. That usually wasn't a good sign
"Come on, you have to agree with me."
"I am so not commenting on this."
"I can't be the only person who sees this!"
"You're the only person who thinks like this."
Definitely not a good sign. What sort of madcap scheme was Deeks planning now? And, did they run and hide or mock him for it? Another look was exchanged between the two partners. Definitely mock. Kensi sounded exasperated, not annoyed or dismisisve. Which meant it was probably something funny. Or idiotic. Both could be mocked equally.
Kensi and Deeks made their way over to their desks. Kensi was already looking done with the day and Deeks was excited. This ought to be good. Callen actually leaned forwards slightly to watch whatever was happening to unfold. Hey, it was a paperwork day and he'd really rather not do it. He was up for some 'Densi' entertainment, as he had heard Eric refer to them as.
"You have to admit that the likeness is terrifying."
"Well..."
"See! I knew you saw it!"
Some grumbling came from Kensi as she acquiesced to whatever point Deeks was trying to make.
Callen raised his eyebrows at Sam who just gave him a pointed look back. Ok, it looked like it was his turn to ask the question of "What the hell are insane duo arguing about now?". This could either be funny or disturbing. This is where it got dangerous. You would think there would be a pretty even chance of either option but they had been tending to the disturbing end recently. To put it simply, Callen felt like he knew far too much of Kensi and Deeks' sex lives thank you very much.
Surprisingly, Sam looked at the pair of them before rolling his eyes and looking back down at expense reports.
"Do we even want to know?" he asked.
"No." Kensi said firmly.
"I don't know, Kens, I need more opinions on this."
"You do not. You need to stop talking about it."
Deeks just shot her that unbothered grin of his. It always amazed Callen how far Deeks could actually push Kensi. If that had been anyone else, they would have been hurt by now. But not Deeks. Which was impressive considering his "colourful" personality.
"No, no, no," Deeks shook his head. "This definitely need the other's input."
"You just want someone else to validate your opinions and inflate your ego," Kensi accused.
"I thought you didn't care?" Deeks quickly shot back.
Callen decided to bring them back to the point, whatever that might be.
"What are you guys talking about again?"
Sam gave him a dark look for encouraging them. Which wasn't completely fair. Callen was genuinely intrigued. Okay, and he'd really rather not do paperwork at the moment. See? Best of both.
Deeks and Kensi exchanged on of those weird looks of their that was basically an entire conversation in just one glance before turning back to him.
"Edna," Kensi answered with an annoyed sigh.
"Mode," Deeks quickly added. "Edna Mode."
Callen had to give them a blank look, not having the slightest clue to what they were talking about.
"From 'The Incredibles'," Kensi told him.
He continued with the blank look, that didn't help at all.
"It's a kid's movie, G," Sam explained. "About a family of superheroes all with different powers."
Callen frowned as he thought.
"And this Edna Mode is a part of the family?"
"No." "Yes." Kensi and Deeks said respectively at the same time. They glared at each other.
Because that cleared things up.
"She is totally a part of the family," Deeks insisted.
"She's not an Incredible."
"Yes, because surnames matter when it comes to family," Deeks said in one of the most sarcastic tones Callen thought he had ever heard him use.
Kensi rolled her eyes but didn't deny. Quite frankly, she was the last person Callen expected to be using that as an argument considering that she was probably the first out of the lot of them to view the team as a family.
"Why were you talking about Edna Mode?" Sam asked, trying to bring them back to some sort of point.
Not that he or Sam knew what that was yet.
"Because she looks so much like Hetty, apparently," Kensi saod in exasperated tone, throwing her hands up in the air.
"Not just looks," Deeks insisted. "She is Hetty."
Kensi made a scoffing noise.
"Come on! Crazy about fashion and making proper clothes and having all sorts of expertise, not to mention her attitude, how is she not Hetty?"
"She's a cartoon character."
"That's basically Hetty."
"No."
"Yes."
Kensi breathed in slowly, deliberately closing her eyes as she did so. A sign, Callen knew, of her forcing herself to calm down.
"That's what you were arguing about?" Sam asked incredulously.
Callen gave him a look. Really? These two had come in arfuing about a lot (admittedly not by much) weirder things.
"Not just that," Kensi said tiredly, gesturing to her partner. "That ked to him thinking about the reat of the characters on the show-"
"Of course, that led to a discussion of who we would all map to in it," Deeks said matter-of-factly.
"And by discussion he means that he spent the rest of the evening thinking about this," Kensi told them with yet another eyeroll. "No input from me."
"Yeah, you basically ignored me for the rest of the popcorn."
"It was a better use of my time!"
"The Incredibles is a classic."
Wanting to get them back on track (though still not really understanding what the track was) before they devolved into their normal bickering, Callen decided to interrupt.
"What is it even about?"
That, apparently, was a mistake as all three members of his team began talking at once.
"Super heroes-"
"Family that-"
"- baby called Jack Jack-"
"Invisible and-"
"- make him come second place-"
"Capes are not-"
"Enough!" He all but shouted to get them to stop.
It worked. Eerily so as his team were now all staring at him silently.
"The summary, please, not the entire plot."
The three of them looked at each other and then Deeks and Kensi gave Sam a pointed look.
"It's about a family of superheroes; a dad with supernatural strength, a mom who is basically elastic, a teenage daughter who can make herself invisible and a son who has super speed," he explained quickly.
"Don't forget about Jack-Jack, the baby," Deeks interrupted.
Sam glared at him. "Am I explaining this or are you?"
Deeks raised his hands in surrender and took a step back. Sam gave him a final glare for good measure before continuing.
"And they have a baby who has no powers-"
"That they-" Deeks tried to interrupt again but this time was silenced by a well placed elbow in the side from Kensi.
"Don't spoil it," she scolded.
"Sorry."
Callen had no clue what they were talking about so he supposed that Kensi's quick thinking did the trick. He turned back to Sam.
"And I suppose they go save the world?"
That's how those movies worked, wasn't it? Happy endings and all that.
"Well, yeah," Sam replied, sounding slightly put out.
Callen just shook his head.
"It's more exciting than that," his partner said.
"Uh huh." Callen turned back to Deeks. "So, you were trying to do another doppelganger thing?"
"Yes! Thank you! Wait, no. Not exactly."
"He's trying to assign us each a character from the movie," Kensi said in exasperation.
"Which none of us want to hear," Sam backed her up.
Deeks pouted that ridiculous pout at them.
"Thank you!" Kensi replied, ignoring her partner.
Wise move, Callen knew that she really couldn't resist them no matter what she said.
"No, no, I want to hear it," Callen said.
Kensi and Sam groaned loudly. Kensi even buried her face in her hands. See, this way he got both understanding what Deeks was talking about (an admittedly dangerous endeavour) and winding up Sam. Win win.
"See! I told you this was an interesting topic!"
Not exactly but eh, he'd let Deeks think that. Mainly because it got an annoyed sound from Sam. Be should really be taking a tally of those.
"Fine," Kensi gave in. "Tell us."
Deeks beamed at her but she just rolled her eyes at him. Undeterred, Deeks made himself comfortable so that he could get started.
"Well, Hetty is obviously Edna Mode," Deeks began.
"Yes, we've determined that," Sam said impatiently.
"To death," Callen added, after giving their surrounding a furtive look.
You never knew when the woman was going to pop out at them. Or where.
Not put off, Deeks continued, "Sam is equally as obvious, Mr Incredible," he gestured at Sam, vaguely in the direction of his upper body.
Sam practically preened at that as the other two chuckled at his antics. Callen honestly expected him to flex his muscles. He almost wished he had, that would have given him an endless supply of teasing. Then again, it also ran the risk of Sam constantly bragging about his muscles and talking about his workout routine. Something Callen did not want to hear about more of than he already did.
"I can see that," Kensi agreed. "Especially the muscles. There's no one else he could be."
Callen rolled his eyes. Way to feed the big guy's ego.
"I have muscles," Deeks pouted, flexing his own.
"Not like Sam." Kensi shot down amidst sniggers from him and Sam.
"Hmpf."
Kensi rolled her eyes at her partner. "Who am I like?" she asked curiously, giving him a poke.
Deeks was, admittedly, having an awful lot of fun with this. Possibly too much fun but hey, they were all paying attention and not making too much fun of him. Which meant, in his books anyway, that he could forge ahead.
"You, Kensalina, are, without a doubt, Mrs Incredible," he stated confidently.
Crossed went the arms and up went the eyebrows.
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah, what with your ability to stretch yourself to many tasks and your literal ability to contort yourself into strange shapes because of yoga..." Deeks trailed off as an image of Kensi doing yoga entered his mind.
He had an awful lot of very good memories of such occurrences. Especially since he had started doing it with her and ensuring that he was always positioned at the right angle just behind her. Oh yes.
"Down boy," Callen chided as Deeks practically started drooling.
"What?" Deeks shook his head to regain his bearings. "What was I saying? Oh yes. Kensi. Mrs Incredible."
"We'll go with that," Sam said quickly.
"Are you sure you don't want me to explain my reasoning?" Deeks added with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
That just got him a glare from Sam and a ball of paper lobbed at him from Kensi.
"Definitely not."
Well, that was no fun. But, upon seeing the look in Kensi's eyes, being twisted into multiple knots was also not fun so he was just going to shut up...
"So, that leaves you with Dash?" Sam said in amusement, raising an eyebrow.
Figures he would know all of the characters really well. It being a kid's movie and him, you know, actually having kids.
"Well, it was a toss up between Jack-Jack and Dash," he said in a bragging tone
"You're the fastest out of all of us," Kensi pointed out. "Not by a lot, but still the fastest."
"And the one who darts from one activity to the other," Sam added. "Like some sort of hyperactive squirrel."
Callen raised his eyebrow at his partner. Thank you! Deeks didn't think that he was that bad. Most of the time.
"Yeah, but I also have a lot of unexplored talents," Deeks told them.
"Emphasis on unexplored," Sam added.
Deeks pouted. Sam didn't have to be so mean!
"Eh, I'd go with the speedy kid," Callen said, giving Deeks an appraising look.
"Thanks... I think?"
Was that meant to be a compliment? He was taking it as a compliment.
"You're physically fast and fast on the uptake."
Yay! It was a compliment!
"Better than just being known for your muscles," Callen teased nodding at his partner.
"Hey, you're the one who's a teenage girl," Sam teased his partner.
"Who's a hell of a lot more subtle than 'Mr Muscles'," he retorted.
"An emotionally repressed teenaged girl who has the capability to literally and emotionally keeps people at a distance," Sam continued, ignoring his partner's jibe. "Yeah, actually, that suits you down to the ground, G."
"We just need to get him an emo fringe," Deeks decided to throw in, not actually being serious - just wanting to cause a reaction.
Kensi snorted, apparently very amused at the thought.
"He'd need to dye his hair," she said. "Violet's hair is black."
"So you have watched it," Callen said with a raised eyebrow.
Kensi gave him a look. A look that Deeks knew very well and would really rather avoid. And thought that Callen knew better than to cause it.
"This guy," she jabbed her thumb over her shoulder at Deeks, "made me watch it with him. Both movies."
"The first one is obviously superior," Sam said. "First ones always are."
"I don't know, man," Deeks said, rubbing the back of his head. "It was pretty funny watching the dad deal with JackJack all by himself. And the cookies, the cookies were funny."
"I still have no idea what you are talking about," Callen decided to put in, looking more than a bit lost.
"There's a second movie as well," Sam said pointlessly.
Like, Deeks was pretty sure Callen got that much. Come on!
"They're all characters," Deeks tried to help him out only to get an annoyed look.
"I understood that much."
"That have superhero powers."
That definitely made more of a difference than some normal human movie. Yawnsville. Come on, Mrs Incredible turned into a boat! That was pretty darn cool!
"Do you not think Callen would look good with black hair?" Kensi asked, bringing them back to their original topic and probably saving him from Sam's wrath.
Everyone eyed him thoughtfully. Not liking the look in the eyes, Callen shook his head vigorously.
"No one's touching my hair," he protested.
"Now you sound like Deeks," Sam pointed out with a grin.
"You'd be saying the same thing if we were talking about your hair."
"I don't have any hair, G."
"We could get you a wig," Kensi suggested only to get a dark look in return.
Deeks eyed the man critically, trying to imagine him with a wig. He had to hide a grin as the image popped into his head. Maybe Hetty could get him to wear one...
"No."
"Mr Incredible isn't bald..."
"He's also not black and I'm not painting my skin either," Sam said, cutting Deeks off.
Deeks shrugged. "Suit yourself but I thought that you would be all about the authenticity."
The look Sam was now giving him said volumes on what he thought of authenticity. Okay then, moving on.
"What about Granger? We've left him out," Kensi pointed out.
"Also, Eric and Nell," Callen threw in.
"We're running out of characters," Deeks complained. "Except for the bad guy, of course."
"None of us are the bad guy," Sam said warningly. "Especially not an obnoxious one as Syndrome."
"Of course not," Deeks said hurriedly.
"What type of name is Syndrome?" Callen asked.
"A supervillan name," Kensi answered Callen before turning to voice her opinion on the remaining characters.
"Anyway, I'd say Eric and Nell would be Dash because of how fast they do their magic."
"I can go with that," Deeks agreed easily.
Yeah, this didn't sound like one of those movies where the nerds and geeks ran the place. Sci Fi and kids superhero shows didn't usually mix.
Then he realised that that left him without an assigned character.
"Hey, they stole my character."
"No, you're JackJack," Sam told him.
"I thought we agreed that I was Dash."
"Well, now you're JackJack."
"Untapped potential," Kensi threw in which made him feel better.
Especially when Sam and Callen nodded in agreement. It was kind of nice.
"Granger should be Frozone," Sam stated. "He does have the ability to freeze people with just one look.
"Is that a villan too?" Callen asked skeptically.
"Another hero," Deeks told him.
Yep, Callen was definitely watching both movies next. Now, how to make him? Could you even make Callen do something if you weren't Hetty?
"That can freeze people?"
"Anything really. As long as there's water."
Though, Deeks was sure the guy could freeze things without needing water as well but he wasn't sure. That possibility was never explored in the movie. Which was a pity. Frozone was cool and really needed his own proper story arc. And his own movie. Now that would be cool.
"Ah, what a useful skill to have. Especially in our line of work," Hetty commented, magically appearing as she so regularly did.
"Freezing suspects would be useful." Callen agreed.
Especially when said suspects were running away from you on a horse.
"It would certainly make our lives much easier," Hetty commented, appearing by their desks in her usual manner.
That is to say, completely silently, of course.
"Do you have a freeze ray or something in the armoury, Hetty?" Sam asked.
He got one of her patented enigmatic grins in return. Knowing that he wasn't going to get answers from her, he raised an eyebrow at Callen instead. Who just shrugged. Honestly, who knew what was all up there, there were so many weapons visible, not to mention all the secret compartments. Anything could be in there.
"Do you think we're like the Incredibles, Hetty?" Callen asked her.
"It's the kids movie where a family has-" Deeks tried to explain.
"I am aware of the movie, Mr Deeks," she interrupted. "And, yes, I suppose there is some likeness."
"See!" Deeks felt the need to crow.
Hey, if Hetty was on your side you shouted it from the rooftops. Never mind giving you an edge, it meant you had won.
"Really Hetty?" Kensi asked in exasperation.
Poor her. She had had Deeks go on about it and then she had to hear it all again with them.
"Of course," Hetty continued like she hadn't been interrupted. "A band of people who are trying to keep the world safe in a somewhat dubious secretive manner will always echo with our line of work."
Deeks pouted at her and Callen had to hide a smile. That wasn't what Deeks was going for at all.
"Oh, come on Hetty!" Deeks tried to explain. "We're all kind of like the main characters with our strengths."
He then launched into the explanation that he had just presented to the team. Which Hetty listened quite oarltiently to, a faint smile on her face.
"I guess when you put it like that..."
She smiled broadly at them.
"It's quite incredible is it not?"
Callen didn't think that he had ever heard all of them groan in unison quite that loudly before.
