Patronuses

"Expecto patronum!" chorused the twins. It was their seventh year, it was nighttime and everyone was asleep in their dorm. They'd been trying to get the spell right for ages.

This time, both of them though aout their dream of opening the joke shop and how they were going to drop out of school the next day.

This time, they actually succeeded. A silver hyena came out of Fred's wand, and a silver coyote came out of George's. The patronuses chased each other around the room, play-fighting and playing tag and having fun. The twins didn't say a word. Fred draped an arm around George and George rested his head on Fred's shoulder. They stayed like that for ages, watching their patronuses play together.

2 years later

"Expecto patronum." Said George in a whisper, his throat sore from crying over his fallen confidant, partner, and best friend. His everything. His Fred.

He thought of him, and he honestly wasn't expecting it to work, put it did.

George got two unpleasant surprises though. First, his Patronus was now a hyena, just like Fred's. Second, the hyena looked worried and ran around the room, as if looking for someone or something. And George knew just who it was looking for.

It probably thought at first that it was a game of hide and seek or something, but it became clear that its playmate was not here, and never would be here again.

After that it just fell down, looking defeated.

George buried his face in the pillow and cried.

After that, he was never able to produce a patronus.

And on the day, 50 years later, that he died and was buried, at his funeral, Ginny could swear she saw a silver hyena and coyote playing together in the distance.
