The internet allows us to stay connected to each other no matter where we are, on the other hand, it also isolates us and encourages people not to socialize. To what extent do you agree or disagree with these statements?
Give reasons to your answer and include any relevant from your own knowledge and experience.
Answer:
The internet has become an inseparable part of society in recent times. Using the world wide web, it is possible for people to be linked to each other all around the globe; however, the internet can be accused to be one of the main reasons for people being socially isolated.
Firstly, the internet connects everyone. Surmounting the geographical barrier and time-constraints, people are able to instantly communicate with each other over the cyberspace. Students abroad can reassure their family and friends about their salubrious lifestyle. Employees can inform their loved ones if they are working late. People can associate with others working in different fields of works which enriches ones' social circle whilst creating innovative opportunities such as e-commerce. The internet has allowed effortless and effective communication to be possible.
Despite the advantages, it is irrefutable that the internet encourages a solitary lifestyle among people. To begin with, students can become victims of cyber-bullying. Although the internet allows students to communicate, it also provides the opportunity for them to be virtually abused by others because of offensive comments and rumors which engenders students to become anxious, depressed and secluded. Moreover, internet is addictive. Gaining access to astronomical information, people glue themselves to their devices. Even a meal with ones' family becomes impossible at present times. The lack of physical interaction diminishes ones' ability to effectively socialize along with decimating their self-esteem, thus, people develop a socially detached way of living.
Conclusively, the world wide web elevates people's knowledge, broadens their connection−however, it can be agreed: most people use the internet lackadaisically for which they experience a physically and psychologically draining life. Internet isolates people.
