Traitor
Summary: After Trina confesses to Spencer's other lies, the ones about he and Victor being one in the same, Josslyn confronts him.
It's a couple of days after the wedding that she finally manages to confront Spencer about what she learnt. She finds him at a table in front of the Metrocourt pool, sprawled in a lounge chair, sunglasses hiding his dark eyes from site. Narrowing her eyes, she heads over there casually and falls gracefully beside his legs.
He startles and pulls his sunglasses down a bit to look at her. "Jesus, Joss." He breathes out. "You about gave me a heart attack." A smirk twists the corner of his lips a bit at his joke, one that wilts when he sees the way the pretty blonde is glaring at him. He rolled his eyes. "Oh geez." He scoffed. "What did I do to piss you off this time?"
"You lied to Trina!" Josslyn spit out aggressively, her golden hair framing her lovely face. "She told me about how you let your little girlfriend try and manipulate her. She also told me that you were Victor. My problem is that you've been lying ever since you came back and it's hurting my best friend."
Those words shouldn't hurt, but he feels his heart ache all the same. He recalls when he and the pretty blonde were as close as two people could be, before he'd went to boarding school in France. He knows he'd missed out on a lot, things that Trina and Cam had both been there for, things that made the three of them so close. "You know, you and I used to be best friends." He mused.
The girl beside of him bites her lip hard, trying to push down the saddness she feels that they're no longer as close as they were as kids. "I know what your trying to do." She says steadily. "You're trying to distract me so I won't ask you why you've been using Trina for whatever the hell it is you have planned."
Spencer's eyes widen then, fire crackling behind them. "You really think that of me, Joss?" He cannot keep the hurt from his voice.
Josslyn shakes her head in disbelief. "It's not like I want to, Spencer! How could I not, though? You've been lying since you got back. You were Victor, the cute, mysterious guy that Trina was interested in. She only found out who you really were when Cam and I introduced the two of you. Then we find out that you have a girlfriend, one you failed to mention, even as you flirted and charmed your way into Trina's life. Not only do you have a girlfriend, this girlfriend is clearly bad news. What type of person talks about another's kidney transplant and the scar they received from it the moment they first meet? I've seen the fake sweetness before and back then, I was too naive to realize it."
He ignores what she said about Esme for the time being, instead focusing on what she said about Trina. "I'm not using or trying to hurt Trina, Joss. I really like her. Way more than I should and I know that she deserves better than me." He laughs bitterly. "She deserves far more than I can give her. But I'm selfish, Josslyn. I want her in my life. I want to make her happy and to see her smile at me. I want what you and Cameron have." His eyes fix on hers, a pain in them that she's never seen before. "Things come easy to you two. You know how to love. I saw it in the way that you talked about Oscar, the way you stood by him through everything, even though it was hard. I see it in the way you and the tow-Cameron look at one another. I've never had that. Being at boarding school full of fake people who only cared about how rich the other person was or the kind of car they drove didn't help matters."
Josslyn softens at his confession. "Spencer, you're capable and deserving of love. You just need to be honest and let people see that side of you. I'm not just angry at you for hurting Trina. I'm angry because you're hurting yourself with your actions too. Did you know that I was really scared of my feelings for Cam? I've known that boy basically my entire life, but losing Oscar put this...fear in me. I really shut down for a period of time and I'm so grateful that Cam and Trina didn't let me push them away. I'm even grateful that Dev was there, even if he betrayed Cam and I in the end."
Spencer's brows furrow and he gives her a questioning look at the mention of Dev. Of course, he'd heard tale of the boy but he'd never gotten the chance to meet him.
She sighs and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. "Dev...he found out that Cam and I kissed at the homecoming dance last year. I was telling mom about it the next day and the journal I'd written in after Oscar died was mentioned. Mom had put it away in the basement. We didn't know that Dev had overheard. Needless to say, he got my journal and forged some entries and showed them to Cam. Things were tense between Cam and I for awhile. Then on my birthday, a couple of weeks before he died, he gifted me a journal and then got mad that I didn't return his feelings. I only found out the night of the graduation parties, the night "Victor" and Trina first met," at the mention of Victor, she gives the boy in front of her a pointed look. "that Dev had met Cam at The Floating Rib, wanting to confess something. Cam and I put together what it was he wanted to apologize for."
His eyes lower at that as he reaches out to squeeze her hand. "I'm sorry that happened, Josslyn. I guess that's another reason why my lies have pissed you off."
Josslyn nods in affirmation. "It is." She tells him lowly. "You aren't a bad person, Spencer. You've messed up, a lot. But it's easily fixable. Just...be truthful. Break up with your girlfriend, apologize to Trina. Prove to everyone, especially yourself what a wonderful person you are." Her other hand reaches out to cover his as she leans in close. "Let yourself be happy."
Spencer opens his mouth to speak when suddenly, there's a familiar shadow standing over them.
"Hey, Josslyn." A sickeningly saccharine voice says as Esme comes into view. "I didn't know you and Spence had plans." She sits in the chair across from the one Josslyn and Spencer are sitting in, her hand reaching out to rest on Josslyn's bare leg, her pale, slim hand with the manicured nails standing out against tanned skin. "The bikini you're wearing is gorgeous!" She gushes, eyes bright and grey. "You know, maybe we could go shopping together at some point."
The blonde gives a smile, one that's all teeth. "Sorry." She says, filling her own voice with the fake sweetness she hears in Esme's. "I don't really do fake bitch." She gazes at Spencer from the corner of her eye, seeing the way he seems to shrink into himself, the side of himself that she'd seen earlier fading into the background as he put on a front, becoming Esme's little puppet once more. She stops herself from frowning as she stands. "I've got to go. I have plans with Cam and Trina." With that, she stands to her feet and walks away from the two, looking back once to fix Spencer with a look of disappointment before she turns away. She hopes that eventually Spencer will come around and be the person she knows he is deep down but she's not going to hold her breath. For now though, she can't obsess over it. She, Cam, and Trina will just be there for him when he comes around.
The End
