Chapter 1: Lucus

Nessie's POV.

"Come on mom please!"

"Okay fine."

"Yay!"

"When I was a teenager, I was quite clumsy."

"Phf" I laughed. The thought of my mom being anything but graceful and coordinated made me laugh, it just seemed impossible.

"Do you want me to continue or not?"

"Yes definitely." I replied, trying to contain my laughter.

"I was also a solid B student."

"Come on tell me about how you met Dad, pleeaassee." I had pulled out the undeniable smile of cuteness, my parents could never deny it, neither could my aunts, uncles, or grandparents, especially not Jake. I didn't even need to use my cute smile for Jake to do what I wanted; he almost always gave in; that sometimes annoyed my parents.

"Another day when you are older."

"Ok." I sighed in surrender.

"You are going to tell me one day, aren't you?"

"Yes, one day, just not for a while."

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Mom got up to answer the door. I wondered who it was, not many people knew about our little cottage in the woods.

"Ness, can you come here for a minute."

"Coming." I walked down the narrow hallway towards the door. When I reached the front door, I saw him.

"Hey Nessie." He hesitated.

"Hi Lucus" I also hesitated

"Are you ready?" He asked

I had totally forgotten.

"Um, just give me a minute." I ran to my room, I scrambled though my clothes to find something suitable.

"So, who is this Lucus kid at our door?" Mom questioned. She seemed quite interested in how I would respond.

"Just a friend, we're going out for pizza and a movie."

"Just a friend? One that you forgot to mention to your mother."

"Mom!" I groaned.

"I just forgot. Honestly, I forgot myself about today, so yeah."

"Ok you can go, but it would make me feel better if you took Jake."

"Really? You want me to take Jake? I love the guy, but seriously, you know I can defend myself if the situation presents itself?"

"I know, but it would make me and your dad feel better. Besides you're physically eleven, Jake can pass for your brother, it won't seem weird."

"Lucus will get intimidated by him." I protested

"He'll write it off as your overprotective brother." Mom countered.

"He practically is my overprotective brother."

"See, no pretending required. By the way if you won't let Jake come, I might just have to come.

"Mom!" My groan this time was unintentionally so loud I'd be surprised if Lucus didn't hear.

"Fine I'll take Jake." I was feeling quite defeated today.

"Good decision, I'll call him right now."

When I walked back to the door, I saw my dad talking to Lucus.

"So, what have you guys planned?" He questioned Lucus. I could tell he was trying not to cross the line from brother to father. Since I grew rapidly, in front of humans and in public I couldn't call my parents my parents, we had to go by brother and sister. It could be awkward at times. It feels like when you accidentally call you teacher Mom or Dad, but worse. When you call your teacher Mom or Dad it's a simple mistake that makes you feel embarrassed. When I call my parents Mom or Dad people get suspicious, and that's never good. The one thing my family does not need is somebody poking around because I called my mom, Mom. They would find out way more they intended to.

"Ready to go?" Lucus asked.

"Um, not yet, we have to wait for my um, brother." I stammered while tucking a strand of hair behind my left ear.

"Oh ok, well I guess we'll just wait here till he arrives. While we wait, what do you wanna do?" He questioned shifting his weight from one foot to the other. From what I could tell he was getting uncomfortable. If he felt intimidated by my parents, I wonder how he would feel when Jake showed up.

We sat at the island in the kitchen. Mom and Dad kept questioning Lucus about our plans. I had to come to the rescue a couple times, my parents could be over the top at times, but they always meant well.

Finally, Jake walked through the door and into the kitchen.

"Hey Jake."

"Hey Nessie." He had this huge grin plastered across his face; it always put him in a good mood to see me.

"Thanks for coming on such short notice Jake." Mom said while walking over to give Jake a hug. Mom and Jake where best friends, you could see that from a mile away.

"No prob, anything for my girls. By the way what have I agreed to do?"

"Tagging along with Ness and her friend." Jake didn't seem sold on the idea of crashing our hang out sesh.

"There'll be pizza." Mom was trying to sound convincing. One way to get to Jake was though his stomach, and Mom used it to her advantage when she deemed fit. I on the other hand just had to ask.

"Well if there'll be pizza, I guess I could tag along."

"Great! Try to be back for 9:30 please."

"Ok Bella."

"Bye guys." My family waved as we headed out to the main road where Lucus' mom was parked.

We walked through the forest, which is a magical place, avoiding mud puddles and fallen trees. Most would pass the forest for just a plain old forest, full of fallen trees, wildlife and mosquitos. I saw it differently. I had grown up in this area, I found it enchanting, something like out of a fairytale. The way some trees curved, and others didn't, just seems to interest me. One of the best things was the sounds. With my vampire hearing, I could hear all the sounds arounds me. My hearing wasn't as good as the rest of my family's, but it was still better than any humans. I could still experience a lot of sounds human ears just didn't pick up on due to the subtlety of the sound.

The forest remained quiet as we walked, all I could hear was the crunching of the leaves under my feet, the chirping of birds, woodpeckers pecking on trees, and squirrels running through the trees.

Lucus broke the silence and spoke "We're almost to my mom's car."

I could see the clearing coming up, I'd gone up and down this path thousands of times, the giant oak that looked like it had a face was always an indication I was close to the house where my aunts, uncles, and grandparents lived.

"Now that's a cool house!" Lucus said in awe.

"Do you know who lives there Nessie?"

"Ya, more of our family. The three of us prefer the quaint coziness of the cottage" I responded.

"How much more family do you have?"

"Let's see there's Alice, Jasper, Emmett, Rosalie, Carlisle, and Esme." It felt weird to refer to my family just by their first names, but I was getting used to it.

"Thats a lot of family."

"I guess it is. Having a big family can be nice." I said

HONK! HONK! HONK!

"And that's the sound of my mom getting impatient, let's get to the car." Lucus said with a smirk on his face.

Thanks for reading my first chapter of my story. It means a lot to me.
