Writer's Note: Ray O Light's name will be shortened to 'Ray,' and Drizzelda's name will be shortened to 'Zelda.' Because their daughter never had a localized name, I'll leave her name unmentioned.
11:03 P.M.
Zelda had made it clear she was training the baby to fall asleep by herself. She was not usually very serious about decisions she came up with on her own, but she was very certain about this one. She worked very hard as a mom and wanted time to snuggle her husband at night.
And Ray agreed to every word.
"I want you to ignore her no matter how bad you feel."
"Yes Honey."
"She needs to learn how to sleep by herself."
"Yes Honey."
"I'm very serious about this."
"Yes Honey."
Ray understood that his wife was serious. Her face had that only-showing eyebrow that squinted downwards not enough to look mad, but to look slightly ticked off.
In bed, Ray lied on his back with his wife against his chest. How hard could this be?
12:34 A.M.
Ray heard his baby crying. He instinctively lifted himself up from the bed.
Zelda grabbed his arm.
"Right, right."
He shifted himself back down hesitantly. Zelda still held his arm because she was tired. Ray believed she fell asleep soon after that.
1:09 A.M.
Ray heard the baby crying again. This time he remembered he should not be getting up for her. However, it was a harsh choice.
Slowly, Ray shifted himself out of bed as to not wake Zelda. Then, he managed to get out of bed and take a few steps forward out of the room.
"Where are you going?"
He froze. "Ok, ok I get it."
He grumpily came back to bed and wrapped his arms around his wife.
3:26 A.M.
Ray could not take it. He heard his precious daughter crying and he had to do something about it. He understood his wife for the reason of this treatment, but surely, surely just once would not hurt. Ray knew his child was very much a crybaby, and was starting to worry and think too much about her.
He stealthily shifted out of the bed and stood on the ground. He looked at his wife, who he prayed to be sound asleep. He creeped forward. So far, so good. He opened the door. He walked toward the baby's room. He stepped into the baby's room. His heart broke into hundreds of pieces seeing his baby daughter cry. He reached his arms, and—
"Ray."
He jolted. He turned around very slowly.
Zelda was crossing her arms and pouting.
"Honey… you don't understand. What if—"
His wife walked over and saw her baby. "She looks and smells fine to me. You know she cries every night, it's like Nurse Tongus said, she needs to learn to fall asleep by herself!"
"I know! Honey believe me, but—"
"No, you don't know."
Ray gave up. He was guilty of falling to fatherly instincts, even if that meant he had to coddle his precious sunshine almost all the time.
"She'll be ok, Honey. I know how you feel," she said with remorse.
Ray frowned. "I love you." He kissed his baby's head. Her crying turned into murmurs, then back to crying.
Zelda held out her arms. Ray was wrapped around his precious wife.
"Come back to bed. Don't you want to cuddle me?"
"Yes… Of course."
They trudged back to their bedroom and lied down. Zelda's arms were securely around her husband. This time, hopefully, he will stay in bed.
6:10 A.M.
Zelda slept well for a mother. She could stay in bed all day… Except she awoke to her arms securely around a pillow.
"Dang it! Dang it…"
Zelda rose from her bed steadily, keeping her head still from the dizzy feeling of moving too early.
She marched to the baby's room and opened the door. She did not know what she was expecting, but she hesitated, taking in what she saw. She held her hands to her mouth and gasped.
Ray lied fast asleep in the crib with his arms around their daughter. The little one was not even crying; she was fast asleep in her father's arms.
Zelda held her forehead. "I married a dork… but I love him."
In the moment of watching her adorable husband, Ray started to stretch one arm outwards and wake up. "Hmm, good morning— Ah…"
Ray realized what he did. He opened his eyes and saw Zelda crossing her arms. Her frown was big this time.
"I take it you're mad at me."
"I am, but…" Zelda blushed. "You two are so dang cute like that…"
Ray noticed the baby sound asleep against his chest. He slowly rose up from the crib and stepped out. The baby did not make a sound.
"Hand her to me…"
Ray did as she said.
The baby awoke when she was given to her mother, but she did not make a fuss. Zelda kissed her on the head. Scooping her in one arm, Zelda used her fist to lightly bonk Ray on the head in anger.
"I couldn't help it! I love her!"
"I knew you'd say that."
"Well… Look at her! She's comfortable now."
The baby was fast asleep gripping Zelda's chest. Zelda shifted her arms to cradle her better. Ray could only smile at the scene.
The two walked out of the room.
"I don't want this happening again…"
"Yes Honey."
"She still needs to learn how to sleep by herself."
"Yes Honey."
"I'm very serious about this."
"Yes Honey…"
