Chapter 1: The Blood Runs Cold

The King of Melromarc sat in his throne, straight face and focused but internally filled with worries and distress, the windows on the right are glowing orange and red a sign that his kingdom is up in flames, the royal knights in the room is in an alert and tense mood. How did it come to this he wondered, the Wave of Catastrophe is supposed to be weeks away meaning that this is an attack from a foreign nation, but why? At first thought it was their hated enemies the demi-humans of Siltvelt but numerous reports from the battle told an entirely different story, they're being attacked by the dead. Necromancy he thought but wondered who could have that such power, cause according to defenders the numbers seems endless.

A loud burst of the great door and a knight came in bearing ill news. "My King, they've breached the outer doors, they're flooding in and fighting their way here, we must get you to safety."

"We have nowhere to go, the escape tunnels have collapse and the Capital is completely surrounded." It seems he will face his killers soon, but he must know of the condition of his first born child. "Do you have any word from Malty and her whereabouts?"

"I don't know, last reports states that far she's away from the castle, helping Lord Spear Hero gaining power."

"At the very least I know that she's in the protection of the Spear. We shall make our last stand here." Aultcray commands.

But suddenly another knight came with yet another ill news. "Your Highness, they're at the halls, we are barely able to hold them off but it is not enough!"

"Then we must prepare ourselves, shut the doors and be ready for a fight." They do as he commands; barring the entrance shut, then all they can do now is to wait for the enemy.

The room is silent save for the commotion outside, sounds of distant battle is coming closer, until they can hear the shouts of their fellow men.

"They're breaking through!"

"Keep on fighting!"

"Hold the li –AAARGH!"

They heard bang and boom, very unfamiliar sounds, and then come an inhuman roar, until the battle is happening right outside the door, after the last sounds of a dying man there is silence. Knights approached the door cautiously, spears at the ready to stab any attackers. Another bone-chilling roar as something banged on the great doors, four knights rushed forward to keep it shut, it continues three times until it stops.

Although unlikely, some thought they stop, that is until a large explosion happen breaking open the doors, and with no obstruction to the throne room the dead poured in, they wield swords and polearms, they also wields some unknown weapons that spout fire and thunder, one of the knights guarding the knight fell victim to this. Besides the zombies that mostly hack, slash and stab there are some who are better armored and are fast and strong and agile, the King saw how it cut down its opponent with ease, parrying attacks and severing head or limbs with swift accuracy.

Then came the grotesque monstrosities, one he notice is a hulking monster that is made up of wood, corals, fish, tentacle, anchor, giant crab claw, and other sea debris; the other one is much more terrifying, a monster that is torn in two, it should be dead but it isn't, glowing red eyes, gaping maw of needle-teeth, and Aultcray felt sick when he saw the stomach and intestines just hanging from the abdomen.

As the undead horde slay their way in, the King saw one man who is leading them, he could not believe it, this is the same man who was summoned to this world, the man is supposed to be the savior of this world, the champion of Siltvelt and Shieldfreeden, god of the demi-humans, the Shield Hero, but this man have a name: Luthor Harkon, and he have the look of vengeance and rage in his face.

The capital of Melromarc is under siege, walls breached, gates broken, streets overrun, and the army of the dead marches in, to the skies a Death Shriek Terrorgheist soars above accompanied by a swarm of Fell Bats, some of the much bigger ones are carrying zombies that are armed with guns and bombs, flying over the walls and easily bypassing the defenses.

Gunnery Mobs suppress the defenders on the walls by shooting at them with pistols and handguns, and when some of the archers fought back with bow and arrow the projectiles did little stop to the dead, it merely just made them stagger a bit or fall down.

A dozen siege towers made from a hull of a ship reach the battlements, the ramp lowers allowing the attackers access to the walls, leading the charge are one of the elite infantry of Luthor Harkon: the Depth Guards, the people of this world will soon fear them as they ruthlessly hack down any knights and soldiers in their path leaving a red trail of blood and death.

A Bloated Corpse explodes destroying the hastily made barricade; the Animated Hulks charge in to smash through the enemy lines while some Mournguls used their upper body strength to climb up buildings and attack or outflank the enemy soldiers from above, large mob of Deckhands are right behind to assist the push.

Outside the walls are many crew of zombies with artillery providing support for their fellow dead, Mortars, Deck Gunners, Carronades and the great cannon Queen Bess unleash devastating volley after volley at the city with no regard for the safety and lives of the innocent.

A handful of knights and soldiers are brave enough to fight a Rotting Leviathan, the giant crustacean grabs one of the unfortunate souls, raise him up and drops him into the gaping mouth, seeing the soldiers charging to avenge their friend it brings its massive pincers crashing down to flatten them.

Dozens of knights charges toward the towering Necrofex Colossus and the Gallows Giant, the walking corpse-filled shipwreck use the four cannons attached to its left arm to pulverize the incoming warriors, the other one didn't fire regular cast iron balls but instead uses the Torch of Bogenhafen to incinerate its victims, their screams of agony echoing through the streets.

And while the battle rages on the dead sings, chanting the song that echoes throughout the city, the haunting verses imprinted into the minds of every man, woman and child, forever remembering them as they heard the last phrase.

"Hail the mighty, he's arise'in from the deep. With tattered sails and incredible tales, we're caught in endless seas."
