Just a little idea that came into my head whilst re-watching the series. So glad it's back on Netflix UK btw! They turned Zack into such a creepy character that I don't think this is an impossible scenario.
I don't own PLL or any characters. Possible triggers for assault/ sexual assault references but nothing graphic.
Let me know what you think. I may write more...
Hanna stumbled down the street, barely stopping herself from tripping over her own feet. She was shaking, not from the cold, and everything hurt. She pulled Caleb's shirt tighter around her small body, hoping it would provide some sort of comfort. She didn't exactly know where she was going, she didn't have her phone, but she didn't want to talk to anyone. Her mom and Alison would be at hers, and there was no way she could see Caleb. She stopped. She had no where to go, she wasn't safe, she just wanted to curl up and…
"Hanna?"
Ella walked out of her ex-husband's home to see her daughter's best friend standing in the middle of the street. It was dark but she could tell that the teen was shivering. She stepped closer and she noticed Hanna step back and look down.
"Sweetie, is everything ok?"
Ella had spent the last hour crying over her breakup, but her maternal instincts quickly kicked in. Something wasn't right.
Hanna didn't say anything, but Ella noticed her head move to each side and she pulled the baggy shirt she was wearing tighter around her. She tried a different tactic.
"It's cold out here, why don't you come inside, and I'll make you a coffee?"
Hanna didn't know what to do. Ms Montgomery was the last person she wanted to bump into, but she couldn't get her mouth to form any words let alone make up some excuse. She shrugged lightly, even that managed to hurt, and kept her head down as she stepped forward.
As soon as she was under the light from the porch, she heard a quiet gasp from the older woman. The reaction just made her head drop down lower and she stopped walking. She knew she'd made a mistake.
Ella couldn't help the gasp that escaped her lips when she finally got a clear look at the blonde, though the way Hanna reacted made her regret it. Hanna had a bloody lip, and she could already see a bruise forming on her pale cheek, her mascara was running down her face along with the tears that were still falling, she had bruises on her neck and cuts and bruises down her bare legs, she dreaded to think what the teen was hiding below the baggy shirt that was wrapped around the upper part of her body. She tried to touch Hanna's arm, but the teen flinched away.
"What happened?"
Ella felt scared as she watched tears fall more rapidly down Hanna's face and the shaking of her body increase to violent levels. She barely had time to react when the teen let out a heart-wrenching sob and collapsed to the floor.
Hanna didn't pull away when Ms Montgomery joined her on the floor of the porch and held her. Her body had enough, and she didn't have the energy to fight it anymore. The warm hand running through her hair and the whispered words of comfort were almost reassuring. She had no idea how long they stayed like that, and she may have even blacked out a couple of times, but she just allowed herself to sob into Aria's mom's shoulder as there was nothing else she could do.
Ella didn't care that the hard floor was making her legs numb, she didn't care that her favourite top was now soaked with tears, snot, and makeup, everything else seemed insignificant compared to what Hanna was going through. She knew it was bad. A dozen scenarios went through her mind about what could have happened. She knew someone had hurt Hanna, but she had no idea how, who, or why.
"I-I'm s-sorry!"
A stuttered wail finally left Hanna's lips and it made the tears that had been welling up in Ella's eyes finally fall. Hanna sounded broken.
Hanna could only repeat those words.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
Ella shushed her, told her she didn't have to apologise, but she did. Everyone would surely hate her when they found out. Especially Ms Montgomery. A noise across the street made her jump and look away from her comforter. Unfortunately, this also allowed Caleb's shirt to fall away slightly, revealing her torn clothing and the bruises beneath. She covered herself as quickly as she could, but the damage was done. She couldn't bring herself to look up, she trembled with fear and shame instead.
"Hanna, sweetie, please tell me what happened."
Ella felt sick when she saw what Hanna was hiding beneath that shirt, the pieces finally locked into place, and she knew something awful had just happened to the girl. Hanna didn't speak, she just pulled away from her but didn't stand.
"Hanna, please."
"I- I shouldn't have c-come."
She stuttered weakly.
"I wanted to w-warn Aria, b-but that was s-stupid. N-no one will b-believe me a-anyway."
Ella could barely hear what Hanna was saying as she was mumbling quietly and rapidly, as though she was thinking aloud.
"I believe you."
Ella told her with as much strength as she could manage. Hanna looked up with wide eyes, she must not have realised she could hear her.
Hanna bottom lip trembled, and she quickly looked down. She didn't know she had just said all of that out loud. What remained of Hanna's walls was quickly crumbling.
"I told him n-no. I swear."
Ella just nodded, allowing Hanna to talk.
"H-he said he'd c-come back if I told…"
Another sob escaped her lips as she remembered his voice in her ear.
"We can protect you."
Ella tried to assure her, but Hanna shook her head.
"This only h-happened because I t-told people about b-before."
Hanna scrunched up her eyes and gripped the hem of her shirt until her knuckles were white.
Ella pulled Hanna's hands away from her shirt. She wanted to call the police, she wanted to call an ambulance, but most of all, she needed to call Ashley.
"What did you tell people about before?"
She knew Hanna wasn't going to tell her this easily, but she needed to know who the monster that did this was. Was it the same man that took Alison? Could they go after Aria next?
"The t-tuna melt…"
That she didn't understand.
"… And then when he got in my c-car… I tore up his number… But Caleb still hit him…"
Ella froze, she may have even stopped breathing. This story was familiar, so familiar because she'd heard it earlier that night.
p class="MsoNoSpacing""Honey… a-are you saying…"
She could barely get the words out.
"D-did Zack hurt…?"
Her voice broke, she couldn't finish the sentence, but Hanna's sob was confirmation enough.
