A/N: please read my fic "I can't change" before you read this one.

Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau, an incredibly smart young girl whose life had many challenges. JJ was born into a bad home with parents who didn't even want her, and an older sister who wasn't much better off.

She had only one friend a boy who she went to school with and lived next door to., his name was Luke. She spent most of her time with Luke running around in the woods -that was her favorite place to be- they would build things with sticks and tried to identify different kinds of plants, plus there were always a lot of butterflies.

JJ had to learn to grow up fast, when her parents were home she took beatings, and her father did things to her she wouldn't understand for years to come, but everyone's parents were like that. Right? When her parents weren't home, Roslyn tried to take care of her but she always seemed to be hurt, so JJ had to take care of her too. JJ parents were sometimes gone as long as 4 days and she didn't know where they were going and she knew better than to ask. By the time she was 6-years-old JJ was fully independent, she could cook, clean, get herself dressed and to school all without help.

JJ learned as time went on what her parents were doing wasn't normal, parents weren't supposed to leave bruises and scars, and no one was supposed to touch her where her dad did. Roslyn had told her as soon as she was old enough to understand that she couldn't tell anyone what was happening and if she did everything would just get worse. She told Luke everything that was happening and he said the same thing was happening to him, for some reason JJ couldn't figure out- it made her feel better, like she didn't have to worry about it around Luke.

JJ worked hard at school and even made it onto her elementary school soccer team, she kept her grades which wasn't hard to do as a first grader. She read books all about plants so she could tell Luke what they were when they went into the woods. When JJ and Luke were 7 years old, they went farther into the woods then they meant to and came across an old treehouse that had some stuff in it including some tools. They spent a few days making the treehouse safter. Luke's Pawpaw help them by adding new wood in some places and getting a new ladder. Luke's Pawpaw always helped them with school if they got hurt really bad.

That's how JJ spent the first 10 years of her life, she learned that if she didn't talk, she couldn't say anything wrong and almost stopped talking completely, the most she ever said was during soccer practice. She loved soccer more then anything and she was good at it, she was moved up to the middle school team when she was in 4th grade. Roslyn was a high schooler but still hanged out with her, and made her feel loved, something her parents didn't provide.

One day after school in the 5th grade she was talking to Roslyn in the living room thinking her parents weren't back home yet. JJ told Roslyn about a girl in her class who she thought was the prettiest girl in the whole school. Roslyn told JJ about the prom dance and that she hoped their parents would let her go, and talked about getting to dress up in a big dress and heals, and maybe makeup. JJ never really understood why girls liked dresses or makeup, JJ didn't like dresses or doing her makeup and nails, it always felt like a performance and she told Roslyn that. Before Roslyn had a chance to respond and tell JJ that it was okay to feel like that their parents stormed into the kitchen and JJs father yanked her up and carried her to his bedroom. JJ never wants to think about that day again.

The next day JJ walked into school sore and bruised, she hadn't seen Roslyn that morning before school, but JJ was surprised about that, they had spent most of the night taking care of JJ and coaching her through nightmares. After lunch she was sitting in a boring math class with Luke when their Guidance counselor came and that's were her life changed and not for the better.

……………………….

JJ adjusted to life in 'The Downstairs' quickly. She had to. If you uniform was wrong your punished, if you fold your clothes wrong your punished, if you don't eat your whole mean punished, the list goes on and on.

She was told on the video that everyone working put Christ first, she learned that was a total lie. People who put Christ first didn't do the kinds of things they did. The only was JJ made it through her first year was because of soccer, she was able to leave but only when they had practices and games, she didn't know why she was allowed to do that but not anything else.

Each weekday was nearly the same. Wake up at 5:30 and be dressed, have your room clean, and be standing at attention outside of your room by 5:45. Breakfast was in the cafeteria from 5:50 till 6:15. They had school from 6:30 till 9:30 before "bible study" which lasted till 11:30. Of course bible study just meant groups of kids sat in rooms only being taught the verses that spoke against everyone LGBTQ. After that everykid was sent back to his or her room and could do whatever they want of course they were still being recorded so not really anything. Lunch was from noon till 12:45 and after kids were sent off to 'afternoon therapy'.

'Afternoon therapy' was one of the worst things to ever happen to her. It most certainly wasn't therapy it was torture. They were taken to the 4th floor into individual dark rooms and tied up. So many things happened, she was beaten to the point she couldn't stand, was electrocuted, waterboarded and so much more. She was burned, her hands stuck in boiling water then straight into ice water, bones were broken and even more torture methods. It wasn't the same every day, sometimes she would just be stuck in a refrigerated room for hours on end. And some days she didn't go at all mainly on days she had soccer.

JJ had learned years ago there were places on her body nobody should be touching. That rule didn't apply at 'The downstairs' every other night after dinner she was taken back to the 4th floor, and you can guess what happened. She was told it would "fix her" and if that's what it took JJ didn't want to be fixed.

JJs very first afternoon she was given a small triangle tattoo on her forearm and that was it, she was now a follower.
