"I'm sorry I'm late. The power was out in my apartment and so the alarm didn't go off." Lanie said as she clocked in and pulled on her apron. The diner was packed with the usual morning customers.

"Table 7 is up!" Chef called as he hit the bell for service.

"Let me do that." Lanie said as Maria looked run off her feet but Maria shook her head. She loaded her arms with food-laden plates.

"It's cool, I got this and anyway, your boyfriend is on table 9 today." Maria said, a slow grin spread across her face. Lanie looked out onto the dining floor and saw Eric Miller with his friends Carlton, Wolf and Ravit. He looked so handsome in his uniform.

"He's not my boyfriend." Lanie said in a hushed voice. The man didn't even know she existed. Sure, they shared some small talk sometimes. He tipped generously and was polite, said his thank yous and may I's when ordering his meals. But that was the extent of their relationship.

"He could be if you flirted with him." Maria told her, she left Lanie to run the food to table 7.

"He's got a girlfriend and it's not me." Lanie mumbled under her breath. She had overheard them talking about it last week when they came in. Eric was dating Courtney Abbot, the woman was gorgeous and rich. Two things, Lanie was not. She sighed as she really needed to get over her not so secret crush and just focus on her job.

She pulled the pad and pen from her apron and went over to the table to take their order.
