Chapter 1
Tokoyami found it more difficult to get out of bed with each passing day. Everytime he turned to see an empty bedside, a piece of his heart broke. A month had passed since Tsuyu left him. It came completely out of the blue. He figured they were both happy, but she said that she didn't possess any feelings for him anymore. She was very apologetic, but Tokoyami didn't want to break down in front of her. He accepted it as strongly as possible, and spent the next week crying himself to sleep every night. She moved out of town the next week. Tokoyami hoped that was the reason she called it off, but she made it very clear it was just the event that gave her the courage to say something.
Fumikage groaned as he sat up in bed. Dark Shadow popped from his chest and flew out of the room. The young man rubbed his eyes as he heard the coffee machine turn on, followed by a harsh grinding sound and liquid pouring. Tokoyami only managed to fling his legs off the bed before Dark Shadow came back with a cup of fresh coffee. Fumikage nodded and grabbed it.
"Thank you," he said, sipping the beverage from the side of his beak.
He stood up, hearing his knees pop. He was only twenty-five years old, and had a whole hero career ahead of him. But he'd never felt so old. He continued to sip his beverage as he made his way to his shower. He just let the water run over him while Dark Shadow did the shampoo and body wash.
"You'll feel better when you're out in the field." Dark Shadow spoke in his mind as he rubbed shampoo into his master's hair.
"We say that every day." Tokoyami replied.
"And it rings true, doesn't it?"
"I guess."
Dark Shadow didn't respond to that. He grabbed the bodywash, but Tokoyami stopped him.
"Here, I'll do it," he grabbed the bottle and squirted red liquid into his palm, "I need to stop being such an infant."
"You're sad." Dark Shadow floated above, looking down at his master, "Very sad."
"I'll be alright," he spoke out loud and looked up at his quirk, "You mind getting my costume?"
Dark Shadow waited a moment before floating above the curtains. Tokoyami sighed and closed his eyes as he began rubbing the soap into his body. He hated making his friend worry so much. It'd been this way since the breakup. Dark Shadow did everything to comfort Fumikage. He was starting to feel like a wet blanket.
Tokoyami rinsed off and stepped out of the shower. He dried himself off in the mirror and got a good look at himself. He'd put on a lot more muscle since his high school days, even building up an impressive six-pack. He wasn't exactly a weightlift junkie, but he started going to the gym with Shoji after High School. Ojiro gave him some free martial arts lessons for a couple years, and Tokoyami continued honing his skill after that. He wanted to make up for his physical shortcomings, and all things considered, he succeeded. His mentor Hawks even gave him a sword and some fencing lessons. But nothing he brought to the table would ever top Dark Shadow's power. Everything else was just there to compliment his quirk.
Tokoyami finished drying off and stepped out of the bathroom. Dark Shadow already set up his clothes on the bed. Tokoyami got dressed, putting on his black pants, purple shirt, and spiked belt, along with his black leather boots. He finished strapping them on, and felt his cloak fit over his shoulders. A granola bar appeared in front of his eyes. Tokoyami thanked his friend again and began munching on his breakfast. He finished up fast, and headed for the door. Dark Shadow appeared in front of him, handing him his sword.
It was a Katana with a red handle, made from a new synthesized steel able to withstand extreme temperatures and harsh physical trauma. The steel was pitch black, a fitting color. Shadow Shard, Tokoyami named it. The blade was more of a backup than anything, but Tokoyami felt comfortable with it at his side. And it always reminded him of his master. Dark Shadow's power could turn it into a grizzly weapon, but rarely was that necessary. Tokoyami grabbed the sword and just stared at it for a moment. He strapped it onto his waist.
They walked out of the home and locked the door behind. Tokoyami lived in a two story apartment, but rarely did he even use the downstairs living room. Not anymore, at least. Tsuyu was the one who always invited people over for parties. Tokoyami closed his eyes and shook the thought away. He needed to forget about that. He had a job to do. Dark Shadow wrapped his arms around Tokoyami's waist, and they took off.
Tokoyami was on patrol duty. Essentially, it meant wandering around looking for any criminals and villains, and waiting for any news from the authorities. Tokoyami didn't mind working with the police, as it just meant being "on call". He preferred working as a solo hero. Even Asui went off and did her own missions. They didn't work together like they did in High School.
Tokoyami shook his head again, and continued searching. He'd stop every now and then and perch on a building, taking a nice rest. In two hours, he ran into a pair of troublemakers. Some purse snatchers with their own unique pick pocketing quirks. Tokoyami swooped down and had them apprehended before they could say "mad banquet". He waited for the cops to pick up the trash, and then continued on his way.
He had a few more encounters like this, until late in the afternoon, he finally got a call. It was one of the officers. He couldn't remember their name.
"Tsukuyomi," he said in a low voice as he answered the phone.
"How far are you from Red Street?" the officer sounded panicked.
"Not far," Tokoyami looked around, "Five minute flight tops."
"Get over there right now," the officer said, "We've got a big villain on our hands. Three heroes have already engaged."
"Give me details," Tokoyami said as he turned around and flew faster.
"He's calling himself Rock Master," the officer continued, and Tokoyami heard some gunshots and screaming, "He's currently facing down three heroes: Washout, Slim Jim, and Creati. Two others were taken out."
Tokoyami's eyes widened slightly on that last name.
"Yaoyorozu is with them?" he asked.
"Huh?' the officer sounded confused, "Oh, yes. Creati is here. But we need backup. That's why I'm calling you."
"I understand. What about this villain?"
"As the name implies, he's very good at controlling rocks. Hell, he's basically a giant stone monster," Tokoyami heard what sounded like a car crash interrupting the officer for a moment, "No advice on how to take him down. We're still figuring that out."
"I'll be there soon."
"Please hurry. Godspeed, Tsukuyomi."
Fumikage hung up the phone and put it back.
"Rock monster huh?"Dark Shadow laughed, "This should be fun! And your friend will be there!"
"Momo and I were never friends," Tokoyami admitted.
For whatever reasons, saying those words brought such pain to his heart. He thought back to his days in high school, and his time with his fellow student. They'd fought against and with each other. Fumikage always respected her, and even found her a little attractive (though he imagined most of the boys did). But they never approached each other outside of school and hero work matters. He found himself regretting that.
He found himself regretting a lot of things as he thought back to high school.
Those thoughts were put aside as he approached the scene. He could see fire and hear alarms. Cars were flipped over. Barricades were built as dozens of police cars were put between citizens and the battle. Rarely had Tokoyami seen so many cops. He used his goggles to get a better look. The Villain was huge, over a story tall. He certainly fit the description of Rock Master. His body was bipedal, but made out of several boulders, with one giant boulder as a torso, and a smaller one for a head. His massive, boulder segmented arms crashed cars and road alike as they flung around to hit one of the heroes.
Tokoyami recognized him as Slim Jim. He was shaped like a stick figure, but he was fast and nimble as a fox. He evaded the rock monster's attacks, distracting him while the other heroes tried to take him down. Washout blasted away with powerful gusts of pressurized water. The third hero was supposed to be Momo, but Tokoyami wondered if there'd been a communication error. This hero looked nothing like her. They were a suit of what looked like red power armor across their body, save their forearms and forelegs. They carried what looked like some kind of grenade launcher, and fired away at the villain. Tokoyami couldn't believe that it was Momo until he got a good look at her face and head.
No, it was definitely her. She just changed costume.
Tokoyami watched as Slim Jim was finally knocked away with a hit that just grazed him. The other hero's attacks did nothing, as his rocky body just reconstructed over and over from the road below. Tokoyami swore and flew down as fast as possible. The villain turned and prepared to smash both heroes with his fists.
At the last second, Tokoyami landed right between them, and used Dark Shadow to stop the attack. His massive arms flew out and caught the boulder arms. Washout laughed.
"Just in time!"
Momo gasped as she saw who it was. Tokoyami looked at her from the corner of his eyes. Her hair was tied in that same ponytail from high school.
"Tokoyami?" she said.
Suddenly, a third arm formed and swung at all three of them. Dark shadow's arms swooped back and grabbed the two heroes. He wrapped around Fumikage, and the three jumped over the attack. The villain laughed with a deep, imposing voice.
"Impressive! Looks like you're pretty strong. Maybe I can have a real battle now!"
"Don't count on it!" Momo dropped her rocket launcher and instantly created a loaded RPG. Tokoyami couldn't believe how fast she'd gotten with that. She fired and blew the villain's head off. It formed back immediately, and she let out a sharp huff.
"Seems that's not his real body," Tokoyami noted as Dark Shadow shrunk back down, "He must have a real one hiding somewhere.
"Yeah, Slim was looking for one," Washout grumbled, "That's not an option anymore."
"Will he be alright?" Tokoyami asked.
"Don't worry, he's a lot tougher than he looks," Momo created a rocket and loaded her weapon.
Fumikage looked at her.
"Shall I take Slim's place then?" he asked.
"Sure, that'll work," she smiled back at him, "Good to have you here, Fumikage."
He returned the expression. Dark Shadow wrapped his arms around his master, and floated him up in the air. He stared the monster down.
"You're Tsukuyomi, aren't you?" the villain chuckled as he formed a fourth arm, "I have heard many things about you. It's a shame I don't have any fire powers!"
"Seems you know your heroes," Tokoyami frowned.
"That's a real problem," Dark Shadow said in his mind, "This guy isn't just some thug."
"Come then!" the villain roared, "Give me a challenge.
The Rock Master pulled his arms back, and flung them at Tokoyami. He dodged and flew through the arms, getting closer to the beast. One of them almost hit, until Momo's rocket blew it off. Washout ran to his flank, and took out one of his legs with a burst of water. The blue haired hero laughed.
"How do ya like that, ya big rocky bastard!?"
The villain cursed him and pulled back his arm. However, instead of punching, he swung it, and the pillar of boulders exploded in all directions.
"Get down!" Tokoyami shouted and flew towards Washout, thinking Momo could defend herself.
The hero blasted away two of the bigger rocks, but a smaller one knocked him out cold. Tokoyami got to him just in time, and Dark Shadow protected them both. Fumikage assessed the damage. No sign of skull fractures, but he wasn't getting back up. Tokoyami quickly flew him to the barricade, and then flew back to check on Momo.
Sure enough, she emerged from a pile of rocks with a helmet covering her head. The helmet went back down, showing an undamaged face. Fumikage was relieved, and thankful for her upgrade. The suit opened up at the chest temporarily for her to make items before sealing up again. She panted for air as she tossed aside her broken RPG. The villain roared in laughter.
"How many more of those can you create, I wonder!?"
Momo snarled and created a newer weapon. It looked like another rocket launcher, but it was far more advanced, with a red light running through it. The villain hummed.
"Well, that looks fun!" he chuckled.
Tokoyami landed next to her.
"How's Washout?" she asked without taking her eyes from the Rock Master.
"Out, but I didn't see any fractures," Tokoyami responded.
"I'd say that's good, but we're losing this fight," she frowned as the villain taunted them, "Any ideas?"
"What does that new weapon of yours do?" he eyed it.
"It's a laser prototype," Momo answered, "Made by the same folks who got me this suit. Took me a while to get it down, but I can only make one. And it only fires for a couple seconds. I'm running out of stamina."
"I understand," Tokoyami examined the villain, "If we don't get the right spot, he'll just keep reforming."
Momo grinned maliciously.
"That's ok. I think I already found it. His torso is way too large for him to move properly. I doubt that's just for intimidation. He's housed there, all tight and cozy like a snail in its shell."
Tokoyami nodded.
"Might as well try."
"Can you fly closer for a better shot?" she asked, "and you might have to finish him off."
"Yes, of course. Though it'll be difficult with no further distractions."
"I know. But we're out of options."
The villain laughed again as he stomped closer.
"Done forming your futile plan?" he aimed all three of his arms, "Good, now come at me!"
The arms launched like cannons. Dark Shadow swooped them both up and flew right at the beast. Momo aimed, but one of the arms grazed them, and they went flying.
"Not gonna work!" he mocked.
Both heroes screamed until Dark Shadow steadied them both. They gasped for air, hearts pounding together.
"That was too close!" Momo shouted.
"Our apologies," Fumikage frowned.
"I've got an idea!" Dark Shadow hollered, "We get in close, and I use my arms to block his! I'll drop you two, and Creati blasts him away!"
"What the hell," Momo groaned, "Why not? Anything by this point!"
"Your suit can endure that?" Tokoyami asked.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." Momo nodded, but she looked pretty pale.
Fumikage didn't blame her. He grunted and nodded as well.
"Alright then, this is it. Put everything on the line."
Dark Shadow flew again, slower than last time. The villain threw his punches.
"Too slow!" he hollered, "Much to- HUH!?"
Dark Shadow's arms extended and caught two of the fists. The third one hit him dead on, doing no damage. Dark Shadow clamped his jaw on it, holding him there. Momo dropped and rolled, sliding up into point blank range. She fired her laser, searing the front of the villain's rocky torso. He let out a gasp of fear, and Momo smiled. But the laser didn't go all the way through.
"You...you bastard!" he screamed and tried to form a fourth arm. Tokoyami ran up, pulling out Shadow Shard. Dark Shadow flew to him, covering his body and blade in darkness. The villain was completely caught off guard.
"BLACK BLADE!"
With a swing of his sword, the villain's torso was severed. They heard a high pitched scream as blood flowed from the recent crack. All of the arms stopped inches away from the heroes, distracted by the injury. They even shook like real arms in pain.
"Now, get him, Dark Shadow!"
"Can't!" the quirk gasped, "Too much energy...not enough darkness!"
The villain growled as he began to regain control.
"Leave it to me!" Momo shouted
She created a sledgehammer and jumped into the small crater inside the villain's torso. With one massive swing using some of her suit's strength, she broke through the crack. The villain screeched again as the impact of the blow reached him. The remainder of his shell shattered, and behind stood a young, bald man in shorts and a t-shirt. Momo snarled as she reached in, and yanked him out of the rocks. He collapsed and rolled on the floor, coughing up blood with a fresh laceration on his torso. He began to form more rocks on his arms and legs, until Tokoyami's blade was at his throat.
"Leave it," he glared, "Or you leave me no choice."
The villain growled, and coughed up more blood. The stone dissipated. Several police officers showed up and put him in super restraints. Momo was left gasping as she leaped out of the crater. She nearly collapsed. Fumikage almost caught her, but she put a hand up to him.
"I'm ok." she said, "Just used up a lot of energy."
The Rock Master was dragged away into a prison van. Momo went to Slim Jim and Washout. Both would pull through with their injuries.
"Are they your team?" Tokoyami asked.
"No, I'm working alone these days," she answered, "They work as a pair. I was called in to help like you."
Momo walked over to one of the police cars, and hopped up onto the hood. Tokoyami walked up and sat next to her. She lifted one of her knees, and put her hand on her forehead. Her arms were shaking. Fumikage knew why. His heart was still slamming against his chest.
"You gonna be alright?" he asked.
"Yeah, just...give me a moment," she sighed.
She rubbed her face with both hands. Tokoyami put a hand on her shoulder. She looked back at him and smiled.
"It's...really good to see you again, Fumikage."
"Likewise," Tokoyami said, "though I wish it was under better circumstances."
She laughed at that. Tokoyami loved the sound of it.
"We're heroes. Aren't many circumstances where we can meet each other besides these."
He chuckled with her.
"I suppose that is true."
They both remained silent. Clearly, the battle had shaken them up. Rarely did they have such an intense fight. Dark Shadow popped out and nuzzled Momo.
"Creati!" he shouted in joy.
"Dark Shadow," she petted him, "I missed you."
He blushed at that. Tokoyami smiled at the two of them. It had been a while since he felt happy. Momo just looked so beautiful. Even with her armor on, her face and hair were just adorable. And seeing her pet his quirk brought joy to Tokoyami's heart.
Out of nowhere, Momo spoke up,
"You want to get dinner tonight?"
Without even thinking, Tokoyami answered,
"Yes, that sounds lovely."
