Chapter 1: Cassandra Loneliness
Cassandra and her brother James Cooper are new to the Ingalls family. They stayed with the Ingalls for awhile after their parents, Alvin and Sarah Cooper died in a wagon accident. The first time Cassandra saw Mrs. Caroline Ingalls she immediately was reminded of her Ma. Cassandra thought and run to Mrs. Ingalls crying, "You look just like my Ma."
Charles and Caroline Ingalls wanted to keep James and Cassandra Cooper for their own children but couldn't because of room and finances. They were adopted by the Tompkins family but it didn't work out because of the father's abusiveness and their son Seth made it look like James Cooper was a thief.
The whole time they was with the Tompkins family Cassandra felt more and more alone missing her real Ma and Pa and also the Ingalls who she came to love especially Caroline who reminded her so much of her real Ma.
When the Cooper children ranaway from the Tompkins family and they were found Charles and Caroline Ingalls both decided to adopt them as they said, "We may not have much room in our small house or alot of finances but we can make it work. We have alot of love to give these children."
Cassandra was not quite like the other kids. She only talked to Carrie, Grace and James and Albert. She missed her mom alot and since Mrs. Ingalls reminded Cassandra of her mother she never left Caroline's side. It was hard for her to make friends at first. There were times Cassandra did not want to go to school. She stayed with Caroline at Nellie's restaurant and helped Caroline with the cooking.
Nancy, another new girl that the Oleson's adopted went up to James and asked, "Where is your sister today?"
James answered, "She's sick today and stayed home."
Nancy respond, "Yeah right, I don't believe you she's probably hiding from me and doesn't what to come to school because she's a big baby."
Carrie chimes in and says, "Stop talking about Cassandra like that she has been through alot with her parents both passing away and coming to stay with us."
Nancy replies back, "She's still a baby and you know that she can't accept life. She doesn't even talk to the other girls around here what a baby!"
Meanwhile over at Nellie's Restaurant Cassandra is looking out the door seeing all the kids playing in the schoolyard. Mrs. Ingalls says to Cassandra, "Laura, my daughter, the school teacher always gives alot of homework and James and I are going to be spending alot of nights together with me helping him."
Cassandra then says, ''I want homework."
Mrs. Ingalls mentions, "Then you will have to go to school." Cassandra than rans out to the playground with Mrs. Ingalls smiling at Cassandra.
Before the school children go back into the schoolroom Cassandra meets another new boy named Gideon who also has a hard time making friends and they get to talking a little bit.
Will Gideon and Cassandra become friends and will they both be able to make new friends with other children?
