Chapter 1
Feline view
I paced, staring along the walls of the emergency room waiting hall. Many others were there, but most of them had headed home. It was late, but I didn't want to leave just yet.
"Miss Nekomata? Are you still here?"
"Yes, what is it? Is she alright?"
I rushed up to the doctor, desperate for news. I've been waiting for hours, anticipating to see my gran well.
"We don't know if she'll be alright, the radiation is getting worse, and it's heading into her bloodstream. There is a way to save her, but it won't be guaranteed that she'll survive."
"Anything to save Granny, she's all I've got."
The doctor signed, as he fished out a paper from his clipboard. I gawked at the bill; that, along with the price for the treatment.
"What?! This is way more than the regular price!"
"I'm sorry, but the ongoing war has left us short on supplies, so we had no choice."
I clenchthe paper. What was I supposed to do? I didn't have this kind of money saved up somewhere, and we used all of our savings just to get to the hospital.
"Hm, I might have a way to help you pay for it." The doctor said. He slipped a flyer into my hand, placing it gently into my firm grip.
"Army recruitment? Are you sure about this? Out there is a wasteland; nothing but neighboring soldiers and bodies."
"The pay is well, and you could pay this off in just a few months."
"I don't have a few months, who knows how long she'll live, and she needs this treatment immediately."
"Look, if you send us certified proof that you've joined the Army, we'll start the treatment immediately, and let you pay later. Is that fair?"
It was a good deal; who would say no to that? I could avenge my grandma for the neighboring country attacking our hometown, and pay off the bills.
"Fine. I'll join in, only if you send me proof that you've started Gran's treatment."
I stormed out, headed somewhere to take a drink. The night was warm, with a chilly breeze brewing up. The sky was clear, as fighter planes zoomed by, headed to the war zone. I wondered what it'd be like out there, in the blood-covered resting grounds, fighting alongside others who were just like me. I arrived, opening the door as it jingled. The dim lights of the bar were all on, as the bartender took a glance at me, and waved.
"Ah, hello there Okayu. What brings you here this late?"
"Just stopping by, nothing much. I just need to relieve some stuff."
Marine was the one who ran the bar, since her ship was wrecked in the havoc of the war at sea. She had no choice but to open this place up. The decor had a resemblance of your stereotypical pirate room, with barrels in the corner and a mighty shark posted on the wall. I used to work for her, alongside the crew of the ship, to earn some money on the side.
"Ah, the war has gotten worse. Many of my employees have been drafted, sent off to their deaths. Botan is leaving soon, since she played a major role in the previous wars.
"Such a shame, isn't it? So many people are being dragged into this, along with me."
"What?! Why? You have no reason to leave, unless they drafted you, right?"
"No, no. I have to leave in order to pay for Gran's treatment. She got exposed to the new radiation weapon."
"Bad idea. Out there is a suicide mission, and you'll die out there no matter what." Marine shook her head, speaking her disapproval about the topic.
"I don't really have much choice, do I?"
I let out a collective sigh. Guess I couldn't escape out of this one, could I?
"Well, no matter how delusional you are, you're one lucky cat, so you'll probably survive there for more than a week."
Marine shook her head, as she placed a drink in front of me. This will probably be the last time I'll see this place, so I savor the beverage, swishing it in my mouth before swallowing. No, I will make it back. I promised to Gran that I will take her home.
Aaargh, what a load of dog crap.
"I'll back before you know it. If not, I can personally go ask Botan to grab my bloody corpse over here for you to see."
"Yuck, No way. The blood stains will never wash off."
We both laughed, momentarily distracted from the topic.
"But seriously. If you don't make it back here alive, I will personally grab your corpse and kill you again. Got that?
"Yes, Senchou!"
A small smile formed on my face. It might be impossible, but I will make it back. No matter what.
Whew! First chapter done, still more to go! If any of you need any sources for any of these reference here, I'll probably add them into Chapter 2.
