Chapter 1:

Death in the Family

Akira Takahashi was your average crook. His quirk wasn't anything special, but it allowed him to get the job done. He emitted a gas that smelt like rotting flesh. He was immune to the smell of course but by using it on bystanders he could rob them while they heaved from the smell. He could also use it to distract officers and small-time heroes. It was a fairly useful technique despite how pathetic it was in theory.

Which is why he was fearing for his life right now.

"No please! I haven't done anything wrong!" he screamed as he scurried along the ground away from his assailant. He had already begun to emit his gas, but it had no effect. Akira couldn't figure out why.

"Why aren't you gagging at the smell?!" he cried as the figure pointed at the mask they had over their mouth and nose. Akira's eyes widened in fear and he did the only thing he could think of considering he was trapped in an alleyway. He pulled out a knife and lunged at his attacker.

"Seriously? A knife?" sighed the attacker. They spoke with a female voice which slightly surprised Akira. This allowed the attacker to sidestep to the side, grab his arm and apply enough pressure that he dropped the knife. Akira mistakenly thought that was the end and was therefore unprepared for his captor to lift her right elbow and brought it down on his forearm. Akira screamed out in agony as his forearm instantly fractured and his attacker let go. He clutched it and stumbled backwards, the pain making it hard for him to think.

"What do you want with me?!" he screamed as the figure before him slowly walked up to him menacingly and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt; drawing him in close. Akira could barely make out her face due to the mask. All he knew was her eyes were a colour that struck fear into his very soul. They appeared to be on fire.

"Where is she?" she questioned, her voice just barely muffled from the mask. Akira didn't know how to react.

"Wh…who? I don't know who you're talking about!" he assured but the woman didn't believe him. Not receiving the answer she wanted, she slammed his against the wall and hit him with a left hook that stunned him.

"Wrong answer. Try again. Where is she?" she asked again, her anger rising.

"Aren't you a little too young for this?" Akira coughed which elicited a punch to the stomach and then having his head slammed against the wall. He had his head slammed against it four more times before being allowed to recover slightly.

"Last time. Where. Is. She?" The girl's growls finally got her message across. Akira held his only uninjured hand up to stop her.

"Okay okay. I'll talk! I can't take anymore!" he cried before being pushed against the wall. The girl held him there and gave off a more serious aura than before.

"I'm listening." Akira gulped before giving a small nod in acknowledgement of what was being asked of him.

"All she asked me to do was distract the cops! That was it! They were planning something, and I was just to be a lackey," Akira blurted out before trying to grab the figure's hood to remove it. However, she grabbed his wrist before he could reach it and began to twist.

"What do you mean 'they'?" she asked as Akira's wrist got dangerously close to snapping. He cried out in pain before finding his wrist being let go of. Instead he found his assailant's right hand on his chest, just over his heart. Akira looked down at it before looking at her.

"What are you?" he started.

"You said 'they'. Tell me who or I stop your heart with a single attack." Akira went into a nervous sweat as his eyes darted around in panic, "You've got five seconds."

"Five."

"You can't do this!"

"Four."

"This is murder! You'll be put away!"

"Three."

"I don't know who they are!"

"Two"

"Heroes aren't meant to do this!"

"I'm not a hero. One."

"Some slime girl and uck!"

The girl looked on in confusion at Akira's sudden body jerk. She looked at her hand in worry that she'd accidentally killed him. Rather than that she noticed a red liquid seeping through his shirt and finally noticed the dagger imbedded in his chest. A dagger made completely from what appeared to be darkness.

"Shit," she swore as she wiped the blood from her hand onto the areas of Akira's shirt that weren't yet stained with blood. She quickly turned around to see a figure standing atop a building; female and shrouded in darkness. The moonlight illuminated her figure and within seconds of being spotted she was off. The girl ran down the alleyway and chased after the newcomer who seemed to be melting into spots of darkness and then appearing in another. She was also rather acrobatic. The girl watched as her target dropped into an alleyway and followed after her. When she entered the alleyway, she came across nothing.

"Where'd she get to?" she whispered to herself as she cautiously walked down the alleyway making sure to stay ready for any attack that may come. There was a sound of dripping water that the girl paid no mind to. A mistake that cost her dearly for the moment she passed the dripping liquid, a figure rose up from it. A human looking figure with a slime-like effect.

"Damn it," the girl muttered to herself before feeling something slimy on her ankle. She looked down to see slime and barely had time to register what was about to happen before her leg was yanked from underneath her and she was dragged towards the ambusher. She was immediately pulled into the figure's body and absorbed resulting in the figure giving off a small burp.

"All that trouble and she was defeated within seconds. Pathetic," the figure said in a female voice only to look down at her chest in surprise as her captive burst out through her slime and coughed. She was attempting to break free and was somewhat succeeding, "I don't think so!" The slime wrapped around her face and covered her mouth. A tendril of slime forced its way down the girl's throat in an attempt to force unconsciousness. As the girl's vision began to fade she saw the same shadowy figure from earlier appear from the shadows and approach her.

"Not…like…this…"

Four months prior

Midori Awata yawned as she came to in her own bed. She was feeling good. Why wouldn't she be? She was the daughter of two well-known Pro Heroes. She had a powerful quirk and was skilled with it. To make things even better she was about to start her second year at UA High School in the hero course. Class 2-A to be exact. First she had to actually get out of bed.

"Midori! Get up already. Breakfast is ready!" urged her mother Kaoruko Awata, the Pro Hero Bubble Girl. Midori sighed before slowly pulling the covers back and getting out of bed. She was wearing her light blue pyjamas and her hair was a mess. When it came to appearance she was definitely pretty. She had inherited features from both her parents. She had a fair skin complexion which she had inherited from her father, the Pro Hero Grand as opposed to her mother's light blue skin. She had short dark blue hair which was usually rather ruffled like her mother's but stuck out in some places much like her father's. It curved up and down her head. Her eyes were orange. She was also well-built but slim like Kaoruko.

"Okay mum. Just got up" she yawned while rubbing her eyes. She made her way to the bathroom where she washed her face, brushed her teeth and made sure to sort her hair. Once she had gotten dressed, she went downstairs and found that her mother had made her two slices of toast with strawberry jam for Midori had a bit of a sweet tooth.

"Morning sis" came the small cheery voice of Eri Shindo, Midori's younger sister. Midori smiled when she heard her voice and turned around to find the mini version of her mum smiling up at her.

"Come here you!" Midori laughed as she scooped Eri up into her arms and began to tickle her. Eri erupted into laughter immediately for she possessed the one weakness her mother also possessed. The only main differences between Eri and Kaoruko were their skin complexion, hair colour and eye colour. Eri had a light blue skin complexion like her mother although it was slightly slighter, her hair was dark brown like her father's but had streaks of blue in it and much like her older sister she had orange eyes. She was adorable.

"No stop it! Someone help me!" she cried and Kaoruko walked into the room with a smile on her face. She loved seeing her two daughters enjoying each other's company. It wasn't always like this. There was a time when Midori absolutely despised Eri, most likely due to their conflicting personalities and that Eri was getting their parents' undivided attention as the youngest. That changed as the pair both grew up, but it took a little longer for Midori to tolerate Eri who only wanted to spend time with her. Then that day happened when some kids were making fun of Eri's quirk which was the exact same as Kaoruko's. Midori witnessed one of the little brats using their quirk to rough Eri up and she brimmed with rage. She stepped in, scared the bullies off with a 'demonstration' of her quirk and her relationship with Eri improved ever since.

"That's enough you two. Eri it's time for school" Kaoruko commented and Midori put the mini-Kaoruko down. The pair sat down and ate their breakfast with Midori finishing first.

"Hey mum. Where's dad?" Midori realised the absence of her father, Yo Shindo. Kaoruko shrugged.

"He's probably working overtime. Shouldn't be too worried. He's a big boy. He can handle himself" she replied before placing her transparent air filter mask on. She was decked out in her hero costume. While she was a Pro Hero she worked as a sidekick under the hero Centipeder at what used to be the hero agency that belonged to Nighteye. She packed Eri's school bag before grabbing her house keys.

"You ready baby?" she asked her youngest who wiped her mouth and nodded quickly. She got down from the table and took her mum's hand before being led out of the house. She turned and waved to Midori who waved back.

"I'll probably start packing my stuff for so I'm ready to move back into the dorms come start of term," Midori said to herself as she cleared the dinner table and placed all the plates and cups in the dishwasher while putting away the chopping board back as well as wiping the table. She then proceeded to go back upstairs and into her bedroom where she made her bed and got out her suitcase.

"So what should I take with me this year?" she pondered before opening her wardrobe and getting a selection of clothes; summer wear and winter wear. She also made sure to put in her footwear and of course her underwear. She also made sure to put in her UA uniform, one thing she didn't want to forget, as well as her formal wear.

"Alright that should do it for clothes. I'll deal with my wash kit later," she said as she did up her suitcase and put it on the ground by her bedside. Midori didn't wear any jewellery due to school, but she made sure to pick up the light blue bubble shaped earrings that her parents had bought her for her birthday a couple of years back. She smiled at them before walking over to her suitcase and bending down. She unzipped a small compartment and placed the earrings, which were in a small case, inside. She then zipped it up and finally left her room.

"All done," she sighed in relief before making a realisation.

She now had to find something else to do.

Eventually she decided that she would go for a run to clear her head and continue her stamina training considering her quirk. Midori got into her running gear, grabbed her keys and phone. She then placed in her earphones in her ears and turned on her music playlist.

The very first song that came on was 'Hero Too' which had been performed by Deku's Class 1-A years ago. Kyoka Jiro had gotten the band together years later to perform it again and record it. It had easily become one of Midori's favourite songs. Her run took her through a park, past a bus station and all around her town. She broke out into a sweat as her basic route came to an end at a coffee shop that she had visited for years. She got her phone out and paused her music before making her way inside. The bell on the door went and she was immediately greeted by Himari Tanaka.

"Ah if it isn't my favourite customer!" exclaimed the energetic woman. Midori couldn't help but smile as she walked up to the counter.

"Good morning Mrs Tanaka. The usual please," Midori said and Himari got to work. 'The Usual' for Midori was a gingerbread latte with a shot of vanilla. In other words, it was delicious. Himari placed it down in front of her and Midori pulled out a handful of Yen notes.

"Don't worry about that. This one's on the house," Himari said.

"No it's fine. I can pay," Midori retorted but Himari raised her hand to cut her off.

"You shouldn't speak back to an adult," she said sternly before a massive smile appeared on her face, "Just take the drink. Think of it as a thank you for your loyalty." Midori nodded and picked the cup up, raising it to her lips and drinking some of it. her face lit up as the coffee reached her taste buds. She resisted the urge to hold her face in contentment.

"Ah. Delicious. No surprise there though," she told Himari who placed her hand on her hip and smiled.

"You always say that."

"Well it's always true," Midori assured her.

"You looking forward to returning to UA?" asked Himari as Midori continued her drink.

"You bet I am. I heard that Pro Hero Creati is going to be my homeroom teacher this year. That's going to be fun. Also can't wait to be allowed to use my quirk again. Feels like I haven't used it in years," Midori chuckled as she wiped sweat from her forehead and then ran her hand through her hair. Himari rolled her eyes.

"How's Kujira doing?" asked the older woman. Midori stopped her light-hearted behaviour and scoffed slightly at the mention of the girl she had known since she'd first started school.

"She's being herself. She keeps trying to convince me and everyone else that she's 'changed' her ways. It's all a farce. Someone like her can't change," Midori said in a serious tone.

Himari seemed less than impressed with Midori's response, "What because of what she looks like?"

"What's that got to do with anything?" asked Midori quickly.

"You are aware she was bullied right?" Midori didn't know how to respond to that. She had no idea. However, her dislike of Kujira resurfaced.

"Whatever happened to her back then matters not to me. She has been extremely cruel the entire time I've known her. Why would she change now?" Himari sighed at Midori's ignorance.

"Maybe she's trying to make amends," she suggested before smiling, "Anyway I do believe you should be getting home now. It's three o'clock in the afternoon."

"Wait what?! I've been running for five hours? No wonder I'm so hungry. I've got to go! See you later Mrs Tanaka." Midori panicked as she downed her drink, placed the cup in the bin and made a run for the door.

"See you later Midori! Have a good time at UA!" called Himari after her.

Midori turned down her street and ran straight for her house. She was fumbling with her keys and failed to notice the commotion up ahead.

"Mum and Eri should be home by now" she remarked out loud. When she finally lifted her head she was greeted by the exact opposite of what she expected. A police car was positioned outside her house and her front door was open. Multiple thoughts went through her head all at once. Has someone broken in? Was someone hurt? Is there a villain?

"Mum! Eri!" Midori cried in fear as she sprinted for her house.

"Where do you think you're going young lady?" asked one of the officers and Midori looked past him in panic.

"That's my house! Please let me through!" she pleaded, and the officer somewhat sympathetically complied. Midori was unsure why but didn't care at the moment.

"Mum! What's going on?" she asked as she entered the living room only to find Eri sitting in a corner completely silent and still. She was still breathing which was a relief. Kaoruko had her mask off and was sitting on the sofa with her face in her hands. Midori could hear her sobbing. The present officers took small steps back to give Midori and her mother room. Midori nervously approached.

"Mum. What's wrong?" she asked. Kaoruko looked up at her with her tear-stained face.

"It's your father…he…he's…" she sniffed before finally finishing her sentence. "He's been murdered."

Something in Midori shattered as those words left her mother's mouth. She felt her heart plummet and despair wash over her. However, there was one emotion that towered above all others.

Rage.
