for mae ( _jenrobbins) on twitter: calzona doing each other's nails
title from the lovin' spoonful's "do you believe in magic?"
make you feel happy (like an old time movie)
Arizona shifted on her feet, the strappy heels she had forced herself into absolutely killing her. Everything felt achy and terrible, but Callie was so excited about this new Italian restaurant they were going to and so Arizona had taken a few Advil and would suck it up. It would be fine. It would be great. It would just be awesome if her body could get behind that sentiment.
She readjusted her dress a bit, the fabric significantly itchier than she remembered from the last time she wore it.
"Lookin' good, Robbins."
She glanced up and swallowed back the sharp retort on the tip of her tongue. Mark didn't deserve her ire. Although… "My eyes are up here, Sloan."
He flashed a grin that she was positive some women found charming. She did not. She found it grating. "I was just admiring your dress."
"Well, don't."
"Whoa, easy there, tiger." Mark held up his hands defensively and Arizona almost felt bad. "Don't bite my head off." She scowled at him. "I didn't know you frowned."
"Bite me, Sloan."
"I think Torres might take issue with that."
"Don't you have somewhere to be?" She asked, glancing down at his button-up and pressed slacks.
Mark shook his sleeve back to look at his watch. "I am meeting Lexie in, oh, ten minutes outside the hospital. Have a nice date, Torres'll love that dress."
And now Arizona wanted a shower. Awesome.
She knocked on Callie's door, desperate to get off her feet.
The door swung open, revealing Callie in a robe, her hair curled softly around her shoulders. "Hey! You look so good. Sorry, I'm just running a bit late, surgery ran long."
Arizona leaned in for a quick kiss after waving off Callie's apologies. The taste of Callie's cinnamon toothpaste lingered on her lips.
"It's totally fine," she said with what she hoped was a convincing smile. Callie's eyebrows pinched together for a split second before she relaxed and nodded.
"You can sit out here, or you can chat with me as I get ready?"
"I can either sit out in the middle of your apartment or sit and spend more time with you?" Arizona teased, nudging Callie's hand. The way Callie blushed never got old. "Spend more time with you, of course."
She followed Callie back into her bedroom, and her shoulders dropped an inch in relaxation. Just being around Callie put her at ease, made everything ache just a little bit less.
Callie's cheeks flushed a bit at the sight of clothes piled across her bed. She hurriedly shoved some to the side to make a space for Arizona. "Sorry about all this."
"No, no, it's totally fine." Arizona actually sighed when she sat on the edge of Callie's bed, grateful to take the weight off her feet. She reached down to undo her shoes, kicking them to the side. "They're cute, but they're torture," she said in response to Callie's bemused expression. "I had a six hour surgery!"
"I didn't say anything," Callie chuckled, running her fingers through the ends of her hair. Arizona started to laugh as well, but stopped with a wince at the sharp pain in her abdomen. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, just a bit tired, that's all."
Callie frowned, but didn't push the issue. "I'll be two secs," she said before stepping into her bathroom.
Arizona leaned back against one of the pillows, trying to relieve the pain now radiating from her lower back. She groaned quietly, mindful not to disturb Callie. Maybe if she just closed her eyes for a second, the pain would go away. She just needed to listen for Callie. She didn't want to ruin their dinner plans. They both had been looking forward to a date night all week. She'd be fine.
She tried to remember a breathing technique someone had taught her at some point. Something about in for six, out for four? She wasn't sure. She never had much patience for that sort of thing.
She pressed her hand to her abdomen as if that would relieve the pain somehow.
"Arizona? Sweetheart, are you okay?" A soft hand with familiar calluses brushed over her cheek.
"I'm up, sorry, must have nodded off." She tried to sit up but yelped in pain.
"Arizona!" Arizona blinked up at her girlfriend's concerned face. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, 'm fine." Arizona pushed herself into a sitting position. "We should get going before we miss our dinner reservation." She moved to stand, but Callie held her down by her shoulders. "Calliope."
"You're wincing and frowning and seem kinda miserable. What's wrong?"
Arizona pouted, but that did little to affect the concern on Callie's face. "My period is supposed to start in a few days. I'm just a bit crampy." Callie lifted an eyebrow. "And achy." She tilted her head to the side. "And I kind of have a headache. I just feel kind of gross. But really, I'll be fine for dinner."
"No offence, but you seem miserable. Why don't we just stay in tonight?" Callie tucked one of Arizona's loose curls back behind her ear.
"You were so excited about dinner though."
"We can just reschedule. We'll have a nice night in. I'll just call the restaurant."
"But wasn't it really hard to get a reservation in the first place?"
Callie scoffed, "There are some upsides to being Carlos Torres' daughter. Trust me, it won't be a problem."
"That's hot."
"What?"
"You being all confident and bossy."
"You like that? Good to know." Callie stood back up. "Here, let me grab you some comfy clothes, change out of that dress and we can order some take out and watch trashy movies."
"You're a gem, Calliope Torres." Arizona tugged on Callie's robe until they were level for a kiss. Callie grinned into the kiss, their noses bumping together. "Seriously, I could probably rally for dinner."
"Nah, it's fine." Callie shrugged off her robe and any coherent thought left Arizona's mind. Her mouth fell open as Callie stepped into a pair of panties, a knowing grin on her face as she turned to face Arizona. "You okay?"
"Huh? Um, yes, super," she squeaked out, forcing her gaze back up to Callie's face. "Awesome. Yep. Super awesome."
"Perv," teased Callie, pulling a shirt on. "Do you want shorts or sweats?"
"Shorts, please."
"And I'll grab your sweatshirt."
"My sweatshirt?"
Callie produced a bright teal sweatshirt with a faded Dolphins logo from her wardrobe. "Technically, it's mine. But I'm pretty sure you've stolen it nearly every time you've stayed over." She tossed it over to Arizona.
"You and Yang keep this place like an ice box," Arizona half-heartedly protested, slowly standing to her feet. "Can you unzip me, Calliope?" Turnabout's fair play after all. She glanced over her shoulder, the delight in Callie's eyes warming her.
"'course," Callie rasped. She stepped forward, brushing Arizona's hair over her shoulder. "This dress is amazing, by the way, in case I haven't mentioned that already. You should wear it whenever our reservation gets moved to."
"I'm glad you like it."
Callie tugged on the zipper, failing to swallow a moan as bare skin and lace was revealed. She leaned forward to press a kiss to Arizona's shoulder. "Can you also wear this, pretty please?"
Arizona turned in Callie's arms, looping her arms over her shoulders. "Well, since you asked so nicely, I think that can be arranged, Calliope." Callie guided the dress down her body until it caught at her hips. Callie nudged Arizona's chin up with two fingers. Arizona closed the distance for a kiss. One of them moaned into it, Arizona honestly wasn't sure who. Callie's fingers tugged insistently at her hair. And then Arizona winced, the pain in her abdomen flaring up again.
"Oh God, I'm sorry, are you okay?" Callie's eyes, now a few shades darker than usual, went wide.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm good. I'm good." Arizona breathed out through the pain. "Just hurts a bit."
"Do you want to leave your bra on or off?" Callie asked, one hand skating up Arizona's spine to fuss with the clasp.
Arizona leaned her forehead against Callie's shoulder. "Off, please."
Callie hummed in response as she undid the clasp. She carefully maneuvered the bra off, sliding it off her shoulders. She then pulled the soft sweatshirt over Arizona's head. "Let me just grab you some shorts."
Arizona, no longer needing to keep up pretenses, collapsed back on the bed with a moan. "Thanks."
Callie returned with a pair of cotton shorts. "Also, for the record, the lingerie, very, very hot."
"Mhm," Arizona chuckled. "You are the target audience there, Calliope." She slipped into the cotton shorts. They hung a bit low on her hips, but it was certainly an improvement from the dress. "Are you gonna put pants on or just wander around in your underwear?"
"Are you complaining?"
"Never," she said with a dramatic wink. "Your ass is just one of the many parts of you I'm very fond of."
"What else are you fond of?" Callie asked conversationally as she dug through her drawers.
"Hm, your boobs are pretty great too. And your eyes. Your smile is amazing. You're also smart, which is very hot."
"Yeah?"
"Oh totally." Arizona grinned. "Watching you be all ortho goddess or whatever, very hot. You know that, you goof."
"Yeah, I do." Callie shot back a grin that was nothing short of lecherous. "I know just how hot you think it is."
"Are you talking about Monday or Thursday? Because both were great."
"Are you talking about the surgery or afterwards?"
Arizona arched an eyebrow at her girlfriend. "Callie, I'm all for ortho and how hot it is and all that. But definitely after, totally after."
Callie gave her a fond eye roll, now wearing a pair of shorts as well. "How about we relocate to the living room and watch trashy TV or something? I'm also almost positive that we have some chocolate in the pantry. If we don't, I'll go steal Mark's."
Arizona nodded, another painful cramp seizing her body. "Are you okay to walk? Or do I need to carry you?"
"Carry me? I doubt you can."
"Um, rude. I break bones for a living. And wield power tools. I can definitely carry you."
"Hm, prove it."
Callie sighed as she crossed the room. With an ease that shocked Arizona, she swept her into her arms. "See? Told you."
"Yes, yes, you're very impressive, Calliope." Arizona kissed the corner of her mouth. "You can put me down now."
"Nah, I got you."
"Calliope!"
Callie laughed happily as she walked them out to the living room, depositing Arizona on the couch. "I told you." Arizona pouted up at her from her position slumped against the pillows. "You stay put and I'll get our reservation changed, and grab some snacks."
Arizona curled around one of the pillows, breathing slowly. She watched Callie in the kitchen as she spoke animatedly to the restaurant. Callie's voice was so nice. She could listen to her talk about pretty much anything and she'd be enthralled. Arizona let her eyes drift shut, just listening to Callie chat.
"Hey, Arizona?"
"Hm? Yeah, I'm up."
"Do you want a tea or hot water bottle or something?"
"I would actually kill for a hot water bottle."
"You got it. So we've got that wine we both liked, some chocolate, a can of Pringles that I think I bought when Yang and I moved in and some fruit, sound good?"
"Perfect."
"Why don't you see what's on TV?"
Arizona pushed herself into a seated position, flicking on the television. She channel surfed for ages, not fully registering what was on the screen before her. "Do you have any preferences? Oh, there's Real Housewives."
"Sounds good to me," Callie said as she joined Arizona on the couch, a hot water bottle and a plastic box in hand. "I need to repaint my nails," she explained.
"Ooh, I can do it for you. I'm great at it, very steady hands," she said with a wink.
Callie chuckled. "I should hope so. You are a surgeon. Move over then."
They rearranged so Arizona was leaning against Callie, hot water bottle on her stomach. Callie reached forward so Arizona could situate her hands where she wanted.
"What colour?"
"Uh, the dark blue."
"Dark blue?"
"Yes?"
"If you're sure."
"Do you have another suggestion?"
"Dark blue's just so… dark."
"That is the idea, yes."
"Fine, fine. We'll do the dark blue."
"I think I would be an excellent housewife," Callie mused, playing with the ends of Arizona's hair with her free hand.
"Planning a career change?"
"No, but I'm tough and grew up around people like that and know how to handle them. And all they do is go to fancy parties and yell at each other. I could totally do that."
"Don't you hate public speaking?"
"That's not public speaking. And yes, I throw up, it's horrible and embarrassing and I am so glad that my job doesn't require me to speak in public."
"What about when you win an award for your cartilage research?"
"The cartilage that doesn't work? I doubt I'll be winning any awards."
"It's going to work eventually and then you'll win all the awards. And they always have those fancy dinners where the recipients have to give speeches." Arizona looked back in triumph, flashing her dimples at her girlfriend. "Switch hands."
"I'll just skip the dinners then. And just take the award."
"And miss out on me wearing a really hot dress?"
"Oh, you're coming, are you?"
"Of course, who else would you take? Mark? I'm sure he cleans up nice, but I clean up even better." Callie hummed. Arizona elbowed her. "That's where you agree, Calliope."
"Oh, yeah, sorry, was just distracted."
"Classy, Torres," Arizona laughed.
"Always."
Arizona poked her tongue out as she touched up the edges of Callie's nails. "There. All done." Arizona blew on Callie's nails. "The dark blue does suit you."
"I know, right? What colour do you want? I think there might be a pink in there from when I supposed to be a bridesmaid in Yang's wedding."
"Bridesmaid? Yang?" Arizona twisted in Callie's arms, her face alight with interest. "I have so many questions and please tell me there are pictures. Wait, that was the wedding that Burke walked out of, right?"
"Yep. One and the same. Burke's mom shaved off Cristina's eyebrows. Apparently, Meredith had to cut her out of the dress. And no, there are no pictures. Which is honestly for the best."
"Aw, I bet you looked nice."
"No one looks nice in bridesmaid's dresses. It's like a rule or something. Aria, because she's a bitch, chose these grey dresses that were flattering on no one." Callie shuddered. "And no, I don't have any pictures."
"Nick's sister, Haley, we were all just out of high school and she went with bright purple. The pictures are literally blinding and very 90s. And no, before you ask, I don't have the pictures. My parents might have them, but honestly, that was like three moves ago."
"Um, I am definitely asking your mom for pictures."
"Rude."
"Here, lie down and I'll do yours." Callie shifted so her back was against the back of the sofa and Arizona could lie across her lap, keeping the hot water bottle in place and letting Callie do her nails. "I know this isn't what we had planned for tonight, but this is sort of great."
"Mhm." Arizona smiled up at Callie's profile. "It really is. I mean, I could do without the cramps and general gross feeling, but I like quiet nights in just as much as going out. Just so long as we're together. And that was super sappy." Arizona laughed.
"Stop moving so much. I'm going to smudge your nails."
Arizona sighed heavily. "Fine." She turned her attention back to the group of women arguing with each other. "I don't think I'd be good on this show."
"I mean, I'm not going to say anything, but yeah, I don't think it'd necessarily be your strong suit. I bet you'd kick ass Survivor or something like Amazing Race. Something with a lot of running around."
"Heelys would totally be an advantage on Amazing Race. I could just cruise through all of those airports and train stations."
"I'll take your word for it. Those death traps freak me out."
"Take that back. They're awesome."
"Sure, they're awesome until I'm having to set your wrist and you can't operate for weeks and the Chief does his disappointed voice and says," Callie cleared her throat and dropped her voice a few octaves, "'Robbins, I really expect better from our department heads.'"
"Don't even joke about that. Don't put it into the universe, Calliope."
"I just don't want you getting hurt, that's all."
"Well, if I break my wrist tomorrow, you're going to feel really foolish."
"Fine, fine, your shoes are perfectly reasonable and not at all giving me high blood pressure."
The front door banged open and they both lifted their heads to find Cristina standing there.
"Evening," she drawled as she strolled into the kitchen. "Whatcha doing?"
"Watching trashy reality tv," Arizona replied.
"And painting our nails," added Callie.
"Hot date, huh?" Cristina chuckled. "I'm just here for a change of clothes and then I'm back to the hospital." Yang disappeared into her bedroom.
Arizona laughed under her breath. "Well, that was friendly."
"She's afraid of pissing you off. After the whole fake-liking peds thing. She doesn't have a cardio attending and you're a department head. Huh, maybe I'm the problem. I'm the reason there isn't a cardio attending for Yang to learn from, although to be fair, it wasn't like Erica was teaching Yang anyway."
Arizona pinched Callie's leg with her free hand. "You are not the problem, Calliope. Erica Hahn has, hm, how do I put this lightly? Always been difficult?"
"Always been difficult? What's that supposed to mean?"
"We called her the Wicked Witch of Baltimore," Arizona admitted, fussing with the hem of Callie's shorts. "She was chief resident my intern year."
"How did I not know this?"
"It seemed in bad taste to talk about your ex. We didn't exactly, what's the word? We didn't get along."
"Huh, interesting."
Cristina burst out of her room, barely sparing them a second glance. "See you at work. Don't have sex on the couch!" The door slammed after her before either Callie or Arizona could respond.
"Charming," drawled Arizona, leaning back further against Callie. She yawned. "You're so warm."
"And you're so cold."
"I know, that's why I have you to keep me warm."
"Do you practice those lines in the mirror?"
"Yep. Gotta bring my A-game for you."
"Oh, I see, so you're putting the moves on me."
"Is it working?"
"You are wearing my clothes and I did take off your bra earlier," Callie mused, adding a top coat to Arizona's nails. "But maybe that's because I've got moves, not you."
Arizona gasped dramatically, clutching a hand to her chest. "I so have moves, Calliope. I made the first move on you."
"And then didn't talk to me for a week."
"I was giving you space."
"Mhm. You may have made the first move, but I asked you out first."
"Fine, well, I asked you to be my girlfriend first."
"Uh, to make sure I didn't move to Cleveland."
"You would've hated Cleveland. You're definitely a coastal type of girl."
"Oh, so you asked if I was your girlfriend to save me from Cleveland, how noble of you." Callie dragged Arizona up into a more upright position. "Be careful with your nails."
Arizona held out one hand so she could examine her nails critically. "Not bad."
"Um, they're perfect, thank you very much."
"Okay, yes, they're perfect, Calliope. Well do-" Arizona's words were cut off by a big yawn. "Bed?"
"Are you staying tonight?"
"Oh, uh, yeah, if that's okay?"
"Of course, I love having you here."
"You do?"
"Who else am I gonna spoon? Mark?"
Arizona scowled a bit at that. "That's not particularly funny."
"Believe me, you're the only person I want to cuddle with."
"Aw, you're the only person I want to cuddle with too."
