Harvest of Friends

Carrie Ingalls

Sometimes Carrie wondered if anyone would notice if she did not come home. Pa was always out working or spending time with Albert. Ma was always taking care of Grace or at the restaurant. Laura was off in her own world dreaming about Almanzo Wilder.

"Alright, everyone. Class dismissed." Miss Wilder clapped her hands to end the school day.

Carrie did not move a muscle as the rest of the students got up to rush out of the schoolhouse. Even Albert and Laura were quick to pick up their books and leave with looking back.

"Carrie, is there something you wanted to ask me?" Miss Wilder glanced down at her young student.

"No, Miss Wilder. I was just waiting for my pa." Carrie answered with a half truth.

"Oh. Alright, then. Have a good night." Miss Wilder picked up her belongings and walked out, leaving Carrie alone in the schoolhouse.

Time passed by slowly as Carrie continued to sit and wait, hoping someone...anyone would walk in and find her. She looked around the room and stared out the windows.

She was waiting for so long, it started getting dark.

Just then Carrie heard a tapping sound coming from the back of the schoolhouse. She quickly whipped her head around to see a familiar face.

"Bandit!" Carrie got up from her seat and walked over to the family dog. "What are you doing here?"

Carrier bent down on her knees and began to pet Bandit's head.

"Did you come get me? I was starting to believe no one would come for me." Carrie sighed and stood back up. "Let's go home, Bandit, before dinner starts getting cold."
