Hello! I'm back! College has been super hectic but I did tell my friend I would write her a fic and so I had to. Took me months but at least we're here. This story is based on Taylor Swift's Champagne Problems. It's a mortal AU; I hope you guys like it!
Do leave a review cause it ready helps motivate me to finish my stories :) Cheers!
You booked the night train for a reason
So you could sit here in this hurt
Bustling crowds or silent sleepers
You're not sure which is worse
Reyna was not exactly having the best day. To begin, her luggage had been misplaced at the airport so she was stupidly waiting by the baggage carousel for ten more minutes while everyone had been long gone, which forced her to yell at some poor boy over at the luggage counter because who knows how long it would have taken them to locate her bags had she not shown some spine.
The airport staff had not exactly been pleased to hand her things over but whatever. She just wanted to go home.
Fifteen minutes later and dragging her bags across the airport, she hailed a taxi, which almost immediately had then been stolen before she could even reach for door, and the burly man even had the audacity to yell at her for yanking his jacket back in complaint. He glared at her and quickly closed to door shut behind him, making her huff in response.
Above all else, it was starting to rain. Luck had finally decided to empty her of all their gifts and instead gave her a cold, wet slap in the face.
Deciding to finally give up and take the AirTrain to the subway, she hauled her bags down the steps as the familiar scent of shoes and old metal filled in her senses.
'It's great to be home,' she thought sarcastically.
The first cart had been a fresh break from the busy airport. Drunk teenagers were moving through the narrow passageway and a few people were sound asleep against the train's glass windows.
Reyna sat herself down the first unoccupied seat she could find and took out her phone. Her fingers lingered over the lit screen and over the smile of a blonde boy looking very happy. Reyna winced at his face for beside it was an image of her own, her smile mirroring his and their arms around each other. She quickly entered a number and pressed dial.
"Hello?" The voice at the other end said after three rings. Reyna realized how much she'd missed it all this time.
She smiled. "Hey Anna."
"Rey!" Her friend's voiced laced with surprise. She could hear the faint sound of a male's voice at the other line. "What's up?"
"Can we meet? I'm back."
Reyna peered over the moving cart. With the speed they were going at it was rather hard to figure out where she was in the time of night, but even being away for months had not taken away the local blood in her. She supposed they were five minutes away from their destination.
Five seconds passed. Ten.
"Back at New York?" Annabeth had finally said, sounding a little unsure.
"I know it's been a little over a year, but I've decided that this is my home, and it wouldn't do me any good to avoid my problems."
"That's good." Annabeth responded then paused. "We should meet up! Are you free tomorrow?"
Reyna looked at all the luggage she had to settle into the tiny apartment she'd gotten because the one she had given up thirteen months ago had been moved into already.
"Yeah that works. At McLarens? And bring Percy." She could hear her friends grin at the sound of her boyfriend's name.
"We'll see you at eight."
For his high school graduation gift, Jason's father had given him a car. It was Dr. Grace's beat up old Ford and the air conditioner hadn't even worked for the most part, but Reyna had been ecstatic. They were not planning on going to the same college, but their schools were only an hour apart so it would be easier for him to drive to her rather than having to commute.
Upon getting the chipped keychain, he lifted her up in one swift motion and twirled her around, screaming in glee over a 2004 Ford, and it was the happiest day for both of them since she said yes to his cheesy flower prom invite in tenth grade.
"We can definitely make this college thing work." He had smiled down at her. "I'll see you every Sunday?"
"You better." She playfully shoved him.
It turns out they did make it work throughout college, they just didn't know what would hit them after.
"Why are you back so soon?" Reyna's best friend of four years had looked at her, concern written all over her pretty face.
They were back to their favourite bar, the place they occupied most of their college life. It had been in the middle of their groups universities and had contained the most memories. A wave of nostalgia washed over her.
Reyna twirled her red straw around her iced tea. "I figured work had nothing for me there. Might as well come back."
"Liar." The blonde said softly, blunt as always but not in an offensive way. It was one of the things she admired about her friend, always knowing what she wants and not intending to shy away from it.
"I don't know what to tell you." Reyna shrugged as a tall black haired boy slid in the couch across her, kissing Annabeth on the cheek.
"Reyna!" Percy smiled, exposing his dimples and handing both of them a drink. "It's so good to have you back."
"At least someone is genuinely excited to see me." Looking pointedly at her blonde friend who only rolled her eyes in response and crossed her arms.
"Rey, you're not not exactly the best actress here."
"I'm not lying!" She looked at Percy. "Perce, tell me you believe me."
The sea-green eyed man apologetically gave her a look and took a sip of his beer.
Reyna scoffed. "Alright, I may have been wondering how the last member of our group is." She admitted, her sentence trailing off. It was no use hiding it from her friends.
The pair shared a glance. Reyna pushed down the pang in her heart because she used to share that look with someone, too. She decided to peer down onto her lap and hide the feeling of embarrassment she felt finally owning up to it.
A few moments passed and no one said a word. She briefly looked up and Percy was playing with one of Annabeth's curls, eyebrows scrunched together in worry. The blonde's expression however, was unreadable. Her lips were marred to a thin line, eyes looking at anything but her.
"I know it's silly because I'm the one who called it off, and I know it was cruel of me to cut you guys out of my life for all those months too but I've had a lot of time to think about it, and maybe I had," Reyna cleared her throat, not really knowing how to say it. "Maybe I made a mistake." She explained.
Her friend reached for her hand, and Reyna grasped it firmly, taking any chance to get her friend back.
"I'm so sorry for leaving." She started.
"Don't be." Her best friend's gray eyes looked piercingly at her hands.
Their usual booth felt the same. The atmosphere of the bar had been an exact replica of the one that filled their college days. The drinks were usual and her best friends were their normal selves. Except it was different now. One of them was not here, and that had changed everything.
"I can fix it. I have to." She said, telling herself more than the girl in front of her.
"Rey," Annabeth started. "I think it's best if we just wait for a while."
"I came back for him, Annabeth. I need to let him know that. Now."
"I don't think you should," The blonde alarmingly looked at her boyfriend whose eyes widened as well.
"Why are you so against this?" Reyna said, frustrated. She knew the blonde could be just as tough as she is, and just as stubborn as well. "Annabeth, I thought we were-"
"Reyna."
Annabeth finally turned to meet her eyes. She was still her beautiful self: hair curled like a princess', a light rose colour on her cheeks, and a flawless posture adorning her back. It was the first time, however, Reyna had seen the blonde so conflicted and lost. And then she said the words that shattered Reyna's heart to the ground.
"Jason's getting married."
