Chapter 1
"Sabrina." "Sabrina." "Sabrina Spellman!" "Get out of bed this instant or you'll be late for school," Zelda says sternly. Sabrina groans, and reluctantly exits the warm comfort of her bed. Salem hisses as he's disturbed from his sleep, and promptly curls himself into a tight ball. Sabrina rolls her eyes at him and heads to her bathroom to get ready for school. She brushes her teeth, and splashes some cold water onto her face, effectively ridding her eyes of any remaining sleep. Exiting the bathroom, she wanders over to the closet and chooses her outfit for the day. She tries on outfit after outfit, tossing each wrong article of clothing on the floor. Until she finds the right one. A tight black turtleneck, a plaid skirt with a statement belt, tights, black mary janes, and a black headband. Eyeing herself in the mirror, she smiles contently, grabs her red satchel messenger bag, and heads downstairs to the kitchen.
"Good morning love" Hilda says cheerfully. "Good morning, Aunt Hilda" Sabrina replies warmly. "Ahem" Zelda coughs. "Sorry, good morning, Aunt Zee" Sabrina says chastised, as she takes her place at the dining table. "Sabrina, since when do you wear black?" "Trying to be edgy, are you?" Zelda smirks. "Loosen up Aunt Zee, it's a new year, a new cycle. Time to dust the cobwebs away" Sabrina says brightly. "On that we can agree" Zelda says. "I made your favorite lamb, blueberry pancakes!" Hilda says smiling. "Thank you, Auntie" Sabrina beams back at her. After lathering her pancakes in syrup, she takes a bite, and moans at how delicious they taste. "Mm, your pancakes are the best" she says in between stuffing her face. "Sabrina don't talk with food in your mouth, it's unbecoming" Zelda chides.
"I'm so glad you're enjoying them, I wanted you to have a great start to your first day of school" Hilda says happily. Zelda rolls her eyes and says, "Honestly Hilda, you spoil her far too much." Hilda winks at Sabrina and she giggles in return. "Oh, Zelds do you know if Ambrose will be bringing Prudence to dinner tonight?" Hilda inquires. "No sister I don't know, but he most likely will seeing as those two are practically joined at the hip" Zelda says dismissively while taking a drag of her cigarette. Sabrina's nose involuntarily scrunches up at the mention of Prudence. "Of all of the people that Ambrose could have chosen to be with, why did it have to be her?" she complains. "One does not choose who they fall in love with darling, and she makes Ambrose happy, so she is welcome in this house" Hilda says kindly yet firmly. Sabrina gazes imploringly at Zelda. Zelda's response is an arched eyebrow and another puff of her cigarette. Sabrina huffs and resigns herself to having to deal with her cousin's snarky girlfriend in their home.
Walking through the halls of Baxter High, Sabrina is dreading running into Harvey. Their breakup over the summer was long overdue but Harvey didn't feel the same way. Sabrina grimaces recalling all the rude and hurtful remarks Harvey said to her. They had started dating in the fifth grade but over the years their relationship had soured and dried up. Sabrina realized that she and Harvey are too different and, in an attempt, to salvage their friendship, she ended their relationship. From the way Harvey reacted, it seems like it was all for naught.
Lost in her thoughts, Sabrina wasn't paying attention to where she was walking.
Wham!
Sabrina and her bag went sprawling to the floor along with whoever she bumped into.
"Ouch."
"Ow."
"Sabrina?"
Lifting her head up, apple green eyes locked onto ice blue ones. Sabrina felt her heart beating a mile a minute inside her chest, her throat was dry, and her palms were clammy. Never had she seen such clear, beautiful, mesmerizing eyes. Eyes, that she found herself wanting to drown into.
A warm hand touching her shoulder, broke her from her reverie.
"Are you alright Sabrina?"
Cheeks flushed, she said, "Yes, I'm alright Ms. Wardwell."
Mary Wardwell had not been looking forward to another school year at Baxter High. It meant another year dealing with unmotivated and uninterested students, and worse another year dealing with principal Hawthrone. Ugh, Mary felt bile threatening to rise from her throat at the thought of that vile, arrogant, and chauvinistic man.
She had been going over her lesson plans while making her way to her classroom, when she collided with someone and was sent crashing to the ground. Groaning in pain as her elbow took the brunt of her fall, she looked up to see who had bumped into her.
White-blond wavy curls, apple green eyes, and cherry red lips greeted her. Suddenly she wasn't dreading the new school year anymore, not when faced with her favorite student. Being so close to Sabrina, she noticed how her long eyelashes perfectly curled at the ends. How they subtly fluttered against her cheekbones.
"Are alright Ms. Wardwell?" Sabrina asked concerned.
Touched by the concern shining in those pretty green eyes, Mary nodded her head and said, "Yes Sabrina, I'm alright."
Sabrina's eyes carefully roamed over Ms. Wardwell and landed on her elbow. She frowned seeing it was quickly turning a bluish purple. Gently, she rested her fingers on it.
Mary's heart warmed seeing the concern on Sabrina's face and thought that the frown marring her eyebrows was adorable. Unconsciously her cheeks flushed at the feeling of Sabrina's soft, warm fingers on her injured elbow.
"It's nothing, just a bruise that will heal with a bit of ice and some Tylenol" Mary said reassuringly.
Sabrina nodded, relieved that her favorite teacher wasn't injured too badly.
"What happened to your glasses" she asked curiously.
"Oh, they're in my purse. I got contacts over the summer" Mary explained.
"Oh, okay. It's nice to see your eyes. They're so blue and pretty" Sabrina rambled, blushing furiously once she realized what she said.
Mary felt her heart race at Sabrina's words, she gazed at her from beneath her eyelashes, and said "Thank you Sabrina, that's very sweet of you to say."
Before Sabrina could say anything else, the warning bell sounded off.
"You'd better go Sabrina, or else you'll be late for your first class. We will talk again soon" Mary promised.
Sabrina nodded, bid Ms. Wardwell a good day, and then headed off to her first class.
Thankfully Sabrina's classes passed by quickly and without incident.
Now it was lunchtime and Sabrina could feel the dread pooling inside her stomach because she knew that she would have to face Harvey. Inhaling deeply and then exhaling slowly, Sabrina made her way to the cafeteria. She scanned the room for Roz and Susie, and unsurprisingly Harvey was sitting amongst them. Head held high; she made her way over to them.
"Sabrina!" Roz and Susie said happily, hugging Sabrina warmly.
"Roz, Susie!" Sabrina said beaming at her best friends.
"Sabrina" Harvey said snidely.
Sabrina refused to give Harvey the satisfaction of her response and ignored him.
"Brina, how was your summer?" Roz asked conversationally.
"Yeah, did you do anything fun?" Susie asked hopefully.
Sabrina opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted as Harvey cut her off and started spewing hateful words at her.
"Don't hold your breath guys, perfect little Sabrina won't tell us what she did over the summer. Assuming she did anything other than watch horror movies, read, or hangout with her weird family. She thinks she's too good for us" Harvey said bitterly.
Sabrina felt her blood boiling at Harvey's words, and she snapped "What I did or didn't do over the summer is none of your business Harvey. And don't ever talk bad about my family again, or I'll make you regret it. I don't think I'm better than anyone, but I am too good to be with asshole like you." Smirking at the furious look on Harvey's face, she turned on her heel and marched out of the cafeteria.
Fuming, and hurt Sabrina didn't know where her feet were leading her. She just had to get away from Harvey, from everyone. Startled, she realized that her feet had led her outside Ms. Wardwell's classroom. Sabrina didn't want to bother her teacher with her problems, but she didn't have anyone else who she could confide in. And she trusted Ms. Wardwell. With a trembling hand, Sabrina knocked on Ms. Wardwell's door.
"Come in" she heard politely.
Walking into Ms. Wardwell's room, Sabrina's nose was filled with the calming and delightful scent of vanilla and honeysuckle.
Sabrina opened her mouth to speak, but all that came out was a choked sob. Ms. Wardwell's head snapped up at the sound, and upon discovering that the distressed sound came from Sabrina, she rushed over to her.
"Oh Sabrina, what's wrong?" Ms. Wardwell said worriedly.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, Sabrina said, "It's Harvey, he said awful things to me just now in the cafeteria. I defended myself against him, but I needed to get away from him. From everyone in there. I-I'm sorry to bother you but I had no one else to go to and…" Sabrina trailed off, her chin quivering, and her eyes overflowing with tears.
Mary couldn't stand to see Sabrina upset and didn't hesitate to envelop her in her arms. She gently threads her fingers through Sabrina's soft curls, while murmuring reassurances in her ear.
As soon as she felt Ms. Wardwell's soft and warm arms wrap around her, she felt comforted and safe. As if her grief and anger had never even existed.
Pulling back, but keeping an arm around Sabrina, Mary said "You could never be a bother to me Sabrina. On the contrary, please feel free to come to me whenever you have the need."
Sabrina nodded, and said "Thank you Ms. Wardwell, I feel much better now."
Mary smiled softly and said, "Mr. Kinkle is lashing out and I'm sorry that he is taking his anger out on you Sabrina. You don't deserve it, but please don't allow him to upset you. He isn't worth your tears."
Sabrina agreed with Ms. Wardwell and happily accepted another hug from her.
After her conversation with Ms. Wardwell, the rest of the school day passed by in a blur. Sabrina decided to walk home, needing the time alone to gather her thoughts.
On the way home, Sabrina ruminated on what the rest of the school year will be like. She hoped that there won't be any more confrontations with Harvey but knew that that was just wishful thinking on her part. She smiled recalling how Ms. Wardwell comforted, listened, and advised her. Her day would have been unbearable if not for Ms. Wardwell.
Once inside the mortuary, Sabrina is greeted by her aunts and her cousin Ambrose.
"How was your first day darling?" Hilda asks kindly.
Not making eye contact with anyone, Sabrina responds in a dry tone, It was fine Aunt Hilda."
Her aunties and cousin exchange a look, knowing that her day was anything but fine.
"What happened cousin?" Ambrose inquires.
Sabrina sighs and says "It was fine until I ran into Harvey in the cafeteria during lunch. He spewed awful things to me, like how I think that I'm better than everyone else and he insulted our family. I confronted him and warned him to keep your names out of his mouth, or else I'd make him regret it."
Hilda rushes over to Sabrina and hugs her tightly. "Oh love, I'm sorry that such horrid things were said to you."
"How dare that little shit insult you and our family" Zelda says fuming, her hand clenching into a tight fist at her side.
"Pay no mind to what that wanker said to you cousin, just hold your head up high. He isn't worth your time or energy" Ambrose says while wrapping a comforting arm around Sabrina's shoulders.
"You're right, and I won't let him get to me again. But I also won't let him insult any of you" Sabrina says fiercely.
Later, the Spellmans, excluding Prudence, are enjoying the roast beef and mashed potatoes that Hilda prepared for dinner.
Conversation is light and carefree between them, and Sabrina concludes that all in all her day was a good one.
