Chapter 1: Dinner For Three
"What do you mean the dinner is tonight?" Elsa exclaimed into her phone.
"He really wants to meet you," her sister's voice was drowned out the sound of pots being moved about. "He comes here in just over a couple of hours, so whatever errands you are doing, finish them up quickly!"
Elsa stared down at the bloody body in her arms. Blood was all over her clothes and was splattered all over the room. Not only did she need to dispose of the body and clean up but she now had a time limit? A stupid one too.
"I…er…may be late?" Elsa said into her phone.
A tutting noise could be heard on the other end. Elsa gulped in her guilt. Well, what was she supposed to do? Leave and turn up as is? That would be quite the dinner conversation. Besides, she couldn't really leave with the room as it is. However, this did seem very important to her sister. If she didn't go, she would be disappointing the most important person in her life and Elsa just didn't want to do that.
"Don't worry," she hurriedly said. "I'll be over really soon to help."
"You promise?" Anna's voice was a little sceptical.
"Yes!" Elsa said, putting great emphasis on the word. "I'll see you in about an hour."
Elsa hung up the phone and surveyed her situation. Well, there was no way she was going to be able to get all this mess done in an hour by herself. There was only one option she could do; she had to call in help. There was only one person she trusted to help her with a mess like this. As much as she hated to admit it, he was the one person who was talented enough to fix this for her. Grinding her teeth, she called…. him.
Twenty minutes later, a knocking at the door told her that he had arrived. Preparing herself for the smugness she was about to receive, she opened the door to reveal a very conceited white blonde boy dressed in full hazmat gear with the white hood hanging loosely behind his head. A pair of goggles were atop his silverly blonde hair.
"Well, well, well," he said, really drawing out each word. "Guess you did need my help after all."
"I am perfectly able to manage my own contracts, thank you very much, Frost," Elsa forced herself not to continue with the string of bad words that came to her mind. "Look, I told you on the phone. I need a favour."
"Quid pro quo?" Jack was giving her the most insufferable smirk that she had ever seen which was quite the feat as Jack was known for his insufferable smirks.
"Yes," Elsa replied through gritted teeth.
"So, what do you do? I gather you have killed the guy?"
"Yes," Elsa brought Jack into the living room where her target lied in a bloody mess on the ground of his living room. "Look, I just need help cleaning and disposing of the body. Anna is forcing me to meet her boyfriend."
"Oh, that's sweet," Jack had a genuine smile on his face this time. "How long have they been dating?"
"Over a year," Elsa said. "Since I have been out of the country for the last year doing the Tokyo job, this will be the first time I meet him."
"Let's hope he is better than that last guy, what was his name again? Sans?"
"Hans," Elsa corrected him. "I still can't believe North wouldn't let me do a hit on him. Ah well, all well that ends well. At least he's in prison for some kind of fraud."
"What did he try to do again?"
"I dunno, something about a pyramid scheme, I don't know the details," Elsa shrugged. Her eyes narrowed as her thoughts returned to the situation in front of them. "So, can I count on you to help here?"
"Hmm, okay," Jack said, "but you owe me one Winters."
"Fine," Elsa unclenched her teeth. "I have to run…. but thanks… Jack."
"Wow," Jack looked taken aback, "this must be serious. You usually call me by my last name."
Elsa smiled. "Well, yeah, you miss one dinner three years ago and it's held over my head ever since."
"Good luck Elsa," Jack had a certain twinkle in his eyes. "Sounds like you will need it."
Elsa hesitated slightly but then remembered where she had to be. Quickly, darting out the door, she jumped in behind the wheel of her car. Driving fast and smart was one of the lessons she had learnt while on the job and this time, she was putting all her skills to the test. She had less than half an hour to make a forty-five-minute journey not to mention, she needed to change. Looking down at her bloody clothes, Anna would definitely notice if she just walked into their house.
Breaking the speed limit a few times, she managed to get in a good position coming home. Although, that all ended when she got stuck in traffic. Great, she thought to herself as she drummed her fingers against the wheel. Let's hope nobody has the bright idea of looking into her car. Sure, she had a coat over her bloody t-shirt and she had thrown her bloodied gloves into the back seat but it may just take one nosy kid…
The radio was on and some old hits from Panic! At The Disco was playing. Singing along softly to the song that was playing, Elsa's eyes wandered into the car that was next to her. That was when her heart dropped. It was that blonde cop! Over the past couple of weeks, she had seen him around some of her crime scenes looking for any clues. Now, as a professional hitwoman, Elsa had done a really good at cleaning up her tracks so it was highly unlikely if not impossible for anything to be led back to her but that hadn't stopped this stupid cop from piecing together her last three contracts as the work of a single killer.
Trying to act as inconspicuously as possible, Elsa quickly leaned back into her leather seat as she tried to hide herself from the cop. The cop was looking bored as he looked out into the traffic before him. He had one elbow propped up against the open window while his head rested against his knuckles. From her position, she could see a giant King Sheppard in the back with its head also out the window. The dog was staring right at her. Elsa was sure that the dog could smell the blood on her clothes. The nose seemed to wander in her direction.
Please don't alert your master, she begged silently, please don't. Her eyes locked on the dog's eyes. Any second now, she was certain that the dog would bark for its master's attention. The cop's eyes started to glance her way but then, to her relief, the traffic started to move. Thanking the universe, Elsa zoomed forward, through an orange light – there was no way she was stopping again – and made her way to her house she shared with her younger sister. The minute she pulled into her garage spot; her phone rang. It was Anna.
"Yes?' Elsa answered as she threw off her t-shirt and pulled on a random clean one.
"Is that you now?" Anna's voice came through the speakerphone as Elsa hurried to find a clean pair of pants in her backseat.
"Yes, it is," Elsa replied back as she groped in her backseat. Where were those pants? "I'll be up in a minute."
"Awesome! Kristoff just texted me. He will be here in about forty minutes so hurry! You still need to get changed!"
Anna hung up the phone just as Elsa managed to find the pants she needed.
"Gotcha," she muttered as she exchanged her bloody ones for the nice clean ones. Throwing her jacket into the backseat as well – she would come for them later – she managed to get out of the car and raced up the stairs into the main hallway of their house. There, she found her sister preparing some kind of seafood dish.
"I'm here," Elsa hovered around the food, man it did look good. "Need any help sis?"
"You can help by getting into some nicer clothes," Anna surveyed her sister's outfit. "You weren't expecting to meet Kristoff in your Queen band t-shirt?"
"No," Elsa laughed. "This was my errand outfit."
"I could have sworn you had on another t-shirt when you left this morning," Anna gave her older sister a quizzical expression. "You know, that faded blue shirt with that black skirt?"
Elsa's heart stopped for a few seconds. "Um, no?" Elsa could almost feel herself panicking even more. Anna had been starting to question more and more these days. Why did she agree to let Anna move in with her? Oh right, because Anna's old landlord was a jackass. "You must be getting your days confused hun."
"I must be," Anna's confused face was replaced by a wide grin. "Anyway, you got home only a few minutes late."
"Traffic was a nightmare," Elsa shrugged.
"Yeah, Kristoff mentioned that," Anna looked at her watch. "You only have twenty-nine minutes to get ready Els! Hurry!"
"Okay! Okay! I'm going!"
Elsa hurried down the hallway and into her bedroom where she allowed herself a few moments to catch her breath. Normally, she would be cool, calm and collective when she was under pressure but this was something she wasn't used to. She was used to having to carry out a hit in a certain time crunch or make sure the crime scene was spotless before someone walked through the door but this was something else entirely. That wasn't all that was bothering Elsa. This dinner…well, she didn't exactly know what was in store for her. Hopefully, nothing nefarious will happen.
Quickly throwing on some smart black jeans and a blue blouse completed with her signature snowflake necklace before walking out. Anna raced out the nanosecond she heard Elsa's bedroom door open.
"Hurry!" her sister shrieked.
"Relax Anna, we still have," Elsa went to check her watch and that was when she realised one very important thing; her hands still had blood all over them. Panic started to set in as she stared at the bloodstain on her right hand. A tiny bead of sweat started to make way down her forehead. How did she miss this? "Seven minutes," she said her voice trailing off.
"What? My watch has two minutes to go. Let me see your watch!"
"What? Why?!"
Anna reached for Elsa's hand which Elsa desperately pulled her hand away from her sister. She tucked her hand into the pocket of her jeans and tried to look as if the whole thing wasn't a huge deal.
"Relax Anna, you probably set your watch five minutes fast. You usually do this if something important is happening later."
"Oh right!" Anna slapped her forehead. "Duh! Well, I need to make sure the wine is out. Do you think Kristoff would be in the mood for bubbles? We are celebrating after all."
"Wait…what are we celebrating?" Elsa's eyes narrowed slightly.
"You'll see," Anna tapped her nose.
They were interrupted by a knocking on the door.
"Kristoff!" Anna shrieked in happiness.
"I'm just…. gonna…." Elsa's voice trailed off as Anna sprinted towards the front door. "Alright then," she muttered. "I guess I better get into the bathroom."
Managing to slip away, she headed into the bathroom, where she kept a secret extra strength scrubber for all those hard to get off bloodstains. In the background, amongst the sound of running water, she could hear two muffled voices. Both of them sounded quite excited which made Elsa feel excited. Although this time alone, allowed her to reflect on what is expected out of this evening.
The blood started to run off her hands causing the water to turn scarlet. Her thoughts started to drift into who this Kristoff character is. Even though she had never met the guy, all Anna could talk about was about him. He certainly seemed like a decent character – a much better character than her previous fiancé. Man, was Elsa glad that Anna ended it – quite satisfactorily in her opinion – with Hans. Despite Kristoff seeming like a nice guy, if he put one toe out of line, Elsa may have to put on her 'older sister' hat. Hopefully, it won't resort to any tactics that involve asking a friend to take care of business.
"Elsa!" her sister could be heard calling from the dining room. "Elsa! Where are you! Dinner is ready!"
"Coming!" Elsa called back.
She looked down at her hands, turning them over as she examined them. Most of the blood had come off except in a few spots. Picking up the scrubber, she furiously scrubbed the last bit of red stains off her hands. Sometimes it turned her hands raw but it had to be done. Can't have Anna's boyfriend finding out her actual occupation rather than her pretend one – that she is an international sales agent. It was a good cover as it explained all her travel and long periods of absence from Burgess. It was all set up by the agency she worked for.
"Elsa!" Anna's raised her voice even higher. "Come here! We are waiting for you!"
Well, she guessed that was her cue. Doing one last check of her hands for blood before causally tucking some loose strands of hair behind her ear. Here goes nothing, she told herself as she stepped out of the bathroom door, it was time to meet this famous boyfriend of her younger sister.
Walking down the hallway towards the dining room, she found Anna setting up dinner while a blonde man in a cop's outfit was chatting to her. Oh boy, so Anna was dating a cop, this was going to be interesting. At least there was a lovely smell hung in the air from the plates laden with food that was resting on the oak table.
"So, what's on the menu Anna?" Elsa said with a grin. "It smells heavenly!"
"Oh, Elsa!" Anna directed her to the third person in the room. "This is Kristoff! Kristoff, this is my older sister Elsa!"
Elsa's eyes finally fell on the man she was being introduced to. It took every ounce of willpower she possessed not to drop her jaw in disbelief or let it show on her face. Anna's boyfriend Kristoff wasn't just any person or any cop.
He was the same cop that she had seen earlier that day; the same cop who was trying to solve her latest hits. The very same cop who was a thorn in her side, poking his nose into places it didn't belong.
This was going to be a fun dinner.
