Vimto the Last Warden Part 1
The loud creak of the castle doors at Denerim, were a prevalent memory in Vimto's mind, to him it was a sign. A sign of leaving behind the friends he had made after his quest to stop Loghain and slay the Archdemon, and seeing his sister again. He couldn't help but smile to think about her and what she said about their mother's commitment to stop drinking. Now he was alone with his love, Leliana, everything was perfect, and yet it wasn't.
Every time he looked at Leliana, there was that lingering thought of what he did that night with Morrigan, what he did was wrong and selfish and he knew it, he should've died when he slew the archdemon, and yet here he was alive and well, whilst there was a child out there that belonged to him, that Morrigan forbade him from ever meeting.
"Vimto?", Leliana pressed, she'd been trying to get her lovers attention for the past hour now, she was under the impression that Vimto was missing their quest and the many darkspawn he had the privilege of slaying along the way, she didn't approve of course but she understood how much it meant for her lover to finally have a purpose, to not even be a castless dwarf anymore. Though now she could sense it was something more than that. "Hello?", she shook him this time, maybe too violently.
"Yeah?" Vimto, twisted his head to her sharply as they continued walking along the rocky roads from Denerim, they weren't sure where they were going, and Vimto knew that's what Leliana was going to say. "We should probably stop for camp" his lover suggested, admiring the birds that guided them to the small cavern just to the right of the nearby river. "Yeah right, of course", with that Vimto just followed the song of birds, Leliana just admired him for a moment, her hero, Ferelden's hero, the past few days had been hectic, and now they were finally alone, and yet, her love didn't seem too happy about it...
"Do you remember the young dwarf we helped to study the circle of magi?" his love enquired to him, as they lay in front of the warm fire, looking up at the stary sky. "Yes, why do you ask?". "She was so sweet and curious, were you ever like that?" Leliana wondered to herself, silently expecting her love to change the subject, she remembered what he had said about his difficult childhood. "Well I certainly wondered what I was missing, on the surface I mean". "And you still didn't leave?". Vimto sighed, "it's not an easy choice, my mother was insistent about the dangers of the surface, I mean, maker! I believed the stories about the sun colliding with the Earth above us". Leliana held back a smile, staring at Vimto a moment before he turned onto his side, facing away from her. "I think I'd love having dwarven children, you could teach them about Orzammar, and I could tell them stories of Andraste and the maker". After a while, leliana sighed and lay on her side, "I know somethings troubling you, let me know when you're ready to talk about it".
As the night went on Vimto turned to find leliana on top of him, as she kissed him he smiled, for the first time in days he was happy, as he removed his chestplate they embraced, he closed his eyes accepting his love for her again. However, as they kissed he found himself staring into the eyes of a demon of desire. Panicked, he jolted to feet, backing away slowly as the creature morphed into another familiar face, Morrigan. "Hello there my little dwarven friend", Vimto just froze as she approached him slowly, mouth pressed to his ear, she whispered "She won't ever forgive you, and you won't ever find your child". At that moment he woke up, breathing heavily, he had to leave, and find Morrigan, though he didn't know where to start.
As Leliana Continued to sleep, she remembers a time before they slew the archdemon, long after Vimto and Leliana had confessed their love for each other.
"Is there something you need?" she queried, as always at camp Leliana knew when Vimto wanted to say something, clearly he hadn't quite healed his scars from back when he lived his life as a castless dwarf in Orzammar, where speaking up could often result in a beating, or going without food, depending on what you did for work. "I heard you singing the other night" he finally expressed, looking somewhat embarrassed as he sat down beside her. She smiled and stared into his eyes, she could tell he was trying to compliment her, but didn't know quite how to say it. "I... just want you to know, I will always be here to protect you", as she closed her eyes, pressing her head against his, she whispered "I don't need protecting".
Backing away from her slightly, he nervously turned to the fire, anxious to avoid the distraction of her beauty. "I never told you this, but my father was murdered when I was young" she could only stare as he continued. "He worked in the deep roads, looking for mushrooms that could be traded to the surface, then one day he just didn't come home, my mother fell into her old drinking habits with what little money we had saved, which left me to make what money I could as a beggar" he smirked to himself slightly "I would've made a terrible pickpocket", Leliana shuffled over to him, wrapping her arm around him as he continued. "I was responsible for protecting my family, I wasn't thinking properly when I joined the wardens, my sister urged me to go but I should've pushed back, as the days went by training under Duncan, I thought that my sister and mother might be dead, until we saw them today" This time, he pushed his head against hers, a tear falling on her lap, reaching to wipe it away before he was intercepted by Leliana. Wiping the tear, she leaned in, pressed her lips onto his, Vimto pressing his back closing his eyes and embracing her. After a while she pulled herself away, holding him in a hug as she uttered "I promise I'm not going anywhere, and neither are you".
Leliana woke to the memory of her own words, played over in her mind over and over again, leaping to the unfamiliar cold spot beside her, she noticed a note placed underneath her blanket.
To my sweet, faithful Leliana, I have betrayed you, in my own selfishness and fear of death I cheated on you.
I'm sure you were as unaware as I was that my purpose as a Grey Warden was to sacrifice my life to contain the soul of the archdemon upon killing it.
Noticing my fear and desperation, Morrigan presented to me an alternative, to bear her a child which, containing the darkspawn taint could absorb the archdemons soul and survive. I do not know where I will go but I must find her, you may not understand but I don't love Morrigan, I must only be sure of her intentions with this child and I must stop her from leaving Ferelden so that I might hope to see the child before I lose my chance forever...›
Please do not look for me, as I don't deserve your love for my foolishness.
I have loved you always
