Shane was sitting on a log near a small campfire. The campfire was dead only light smoke was waving up from the charred sticks and grayish ashes. Shane glanced up at the treeline, light peeked through the trees. Shane looked back at the campfire, he rubbed his eyes that had become baggy due to lack of sleep. Shane looked at Amy as he stood up. Amy had stayed up all night and had fallen asleep next to the radio. Shane quickly turned around, to face the driveway where he had heard leaves crunch Shane had heard leaves crunch. Shane took a couple steps forwards.
Shane slightly leaned his head forward to strengthen his view of the area. There better not be another damn walker! Shane exhaled as he saw a familiar person walking out of the treeline. It was Daryl. Shane looked at Daryl's crossbow that was in his right hand, in his left and were a group of dead squirrels. "I've seen almost a dozen walkers when I was out there! They're leaving the damn city," Daryl informed as he walked past Shane.
Shane hung his head as he looked at the ground. How the hell am I supposed to get these people moving when we still the group in the goddamn city? Shane looked forward as he turned his body to face Daryl and the camp. They don't have a choice… They have to leave or we will be mobbed with them undead pricks.
"Is my brother back? What about the others?" Daryl questioned as he laid the dead squirrels down.
Shane bit his lip. "No, they ain't back."
Daryl sat down on a rock and grabbed the squirrels while placing his crossbow on the ground. "You plan on getting them back?" he asked with irritation in his voice.
Shane glanced at Amy who was still asleep. Going back to the city was suicide. They volunteered, they knew the risks and now they most likely dead. Shane looked back at Daryl who was skinning the squirrels. "It's too risky. The city is full of walkers, sending more people to the city would mean more people dying."
Daryl looked up at Shane, anger in his eyes. "So what?! My brother volunteered to get supplies for y'all and your going to repay him by abandoning him?!" Daryl growled. Daryl's voice echoed throughout the camp.
"W-what's going on?" Amy asked, as she slowly opened her eyes.
Shane looked at at Amy then glanced at the RV as Dale opened the door and stepped out. "Go on… Tell em'" Daryl said with venom in his words.
Shane sighed and slid his foot back making a line in the dirt. "The others are still gone… Daryl said he saw more walkers in the woods near camp. That means more and more are leaving the city, probably looking for more people to kill. If we send more people out they will not be coming back… at least alive. We have to leave before more walkers show up and we lose more people," Shane said.
"My sister is out there you! You son of a bitch!" Amy lashed out.
Why can't they understand, I'm trying to protect them. Shane glanced at Carl and Lori's tent as Lori stepped out of it.
"Shane is right, sending more people to the city would be dangerous. Not to mention what if a large group of walkers attacked and we had already sent a rescue team out. We have very little numbers as is," Lori said, her arms crossed as she looked at everyone.
Dale looked at Shane with his head slightly angled. "You can't possible believe that leaving our friends behind is the best option. Surely we can find another way," he said.
"Alright fine, those of you who would like to leave for the city go on right ahead! Go on, I ain't gonna stop you!" Shane barked. Shane slowly looked at everyone in front of him. "Just as I thought."
"To hell with all of y'all!" Daryl shouted. Daryl dropped his skinned squirrels and grabbed his crossbow as he stood up. "I'm not going to leave Merle." Daryl brushed past Shane.
"Where are you going?" Shane questioned Daryl.
Daryl didn't reply, he got onto his brother's motorcycle and drove away. Shane turned around as he scratched the back of his head. Daryl was a good shot and he knew how to kill a couple squirrels but that's all he provides. We'll be better off without him and his brother.
A woman's cries snapped Shane out of thought, he instinctively grabbed his shotgun. Shane looked at Lori, gesturing her to get into the RV. As soon as Lori and Carl got into the RV the rest of the women and children gathered inside the RV as the men grouped up. Shane, Jim and Ed stood side by side waiting for something to appear or for another scream. Shane glances at the RV after hear footsteps on the roof. Dale was on the roof with his rifle aimed at the direction of the screams.
"Must of been some people camped out nearby," Dale said as he looked through the scope of his rifle.
"I suggest we get the hell out of here…" Ed mumbled.
"Alright let's break down camp…" Shane said softly as he gazed at the treeline. Jim and Ed walked towards the RV and then got in it.
30 minutes later the camp had been dismantled and everyone was now loading into the three vehicles. Shane and Jim sat in Shane's jeep as everyone got into the vehicles. Shane noticed Ed looking into the treeline like he was looking for something. What the hell is he doing? Ed leaned his head further into the treeline, not a second later Ed is pulled in. Ed let out a loud scream, shortly after Ed stepped back revealing his bloody neck. Shane's eyes widened as he saw a walker that was once an elderly man tackle Ed. Shane stepped on the gas peddle as Jim gasped at the site Shane took one last look at Ed. Five other walkers had come out of the woods and were tearing Ed apart. Shane didn't say anything as he drove out of the driveway and onto a road.
Shane stared at the road in front of him, lost in his thoughts. Nobody gave a shit about Ed, honestly he deserved what he got. Carol and Sophia are better off, no more beatings.
"Where are we heading? Anywhere specific?" Jim asked with a low voice.
Shane snapped out of thought and looked at Jim. "I might know a place, but should be discussed with the others," he answered. Shane pulled over to the side of the road. The other two vehicles pulled over shortly after.
Shane, Dale, Jim, Lori, and Amy got out of the vehicles. "What is it? Something wrong?" Dale asked.
"No everything is fine, we just should discuss where we are going. I think we should head to Fort Benning, there could be a good chance that the Military had set up a safe-zone," Shane suggested.
The Morales got out of their van. "We aren't coming with you all. My husband is still out there… and I can't leave him… But if I cannot find him then… We will head to Birmingham, we got family there," Miranda Morales said with a shaky voice.
"What? It's too dangerous out there, and you don't have any weapons," Dale protested.
Miranda frowned. "My husband is out there, he could be looking for me," she responded.
Shane placed his hands on his waist. "Alright, but we don't have any supplies to spare. We are just scrapping the barrel as is," he said with a sympathetic voice.
Miranda slowly nodded. "Good luck, you are all good people and I am very grateful for what you all have done for me and my family," she said, forcing a smile.
Shane saw right through her smile, she was scared, but she was also determined to find her husband. Miranda said her final goodbyes before escorting her family back to the van. Shane watched as they all got into the van. A few seconds later Miranda started the van and drove passed the jeep and RV.
"They'll be okay… We'll be okay," Lori said, placing her hand on Shane's shoulder. The warmth of Lori's touch sent a wave of comfort. Shane morphed his lips into a smile as he looked into Lori's brown eyes.
"Alright everyone get back into the vehicles and lets go," Shane said with an energetic voice. Whenever he saw Lori he always felt more energize like her touch and presence was a drug that boosted his adrenaline.
Once everyone got back into the vehicles Shane led the group down the road.
Shane pulled over to the side of the road and got out of his jeep. In front of him was large barricades that were almost like a wall around the base. In the courtyard of the base was covered with dead walkers and soldiers. "What happened?" Jim asked as he stood next to Shane.
"It got overrun, but I don't know something doesn't seem right," Shane answered as he looked at the dead soldiers. Shane started to walk along the barricades until he found a whole. He glanced at Jim who was right behind him.
Shane walked through the opening of the wall of barricades and took a couple steps. "Did you see that?" Jim whispered, pointing at one of the buildings. Instead of the United States flag that was flying on the flagpole of the building it was an old Soviet Union flag.
Shane squinted as he looked at the flag. What the hell? Why is there a Soviet flag? I knew something was off. Shane took another couple steps forward. Jim did the same. Suddenly Shane and Jim both hear a Whine, Shane knew the sound; It was a bullet. "Get down!" Shane ordered.
Jim and Shane lowered themselves and rushed back out of the fort. Suddenly over thirty people ran out of one of the buildings. All of them were wearing black hoodies and black face masks. One of them had a small flagpole with another Soviet Union flag.
"Go! Go!" Shane shouted as he ran with Jim back to the vehicles. Jim and Shane both got into the jeep and drove off. The others didn't hesitate and followed behind.
