Summary: "Mobius, too, looked tired, but mostly in the sense that he'd seen too many things as of late. His haunted eyes flickered up upon their arrival, but that was the only reaction he gave." Loki worries about the toll everything's taking on Mobius. Sylvie lends a hand and helps put the former TVA agent's mind to ease. One-shot. Set in episode five.
A/N: Inspired by Thundercatlola's Eye of the Storm on AO3. The title is lyrics from End of Time by Ahrix, Alan Walker, and K-391. I also figured it was a nice tie in to episode four.
You're Not Alone (You'll Never Be)
Loki had expected it to be Mobius who would retrieve them and bring them back inside the small shelter that their group had stopped at. He was surprised when the child's voice had come instead, higher pitched and not as soft as Mobius's. But he and Sylvie followed him inside all the same.
The other variants had made the shelter a bit more lively than it was when they'd arrived; a few chairs had been conjured up, and a fire roared at their feet- Loki knew the fire was only for Mobius; the Lokis were all Frost Giants, the cold was their natural comfort.
The alligator was fast asleep beside the boy's chair, which he sat himself in before either Loki or Sylvie could claim it as their own. The eldest Loki appeared to be drifting off already himself, his head slowly lolling to the side. Mobius, too, looked tired, but mostly in the sense that he'd seen too many things as of late. His haunted eyes flickered up upon their arrival, but that was the only reaction he gave.
"Are you okay?" Loki asked him, frowning.
He avoided the question, his voice surprisingly neutral in contrast to his face. "We're camping out here for a few more hours." He inclined his head towards the older Loki. "He suggested that we all get some rest before the universe really falls apart."
"The three of you really do look like Hel." The child added. No one moved. "If we wanted to get rid of you, we'd have done it by now."
"Okay. Fine." Loki agreed, though it was for Mobius's sake more than his own. He had a sneaking suspicion that the former TVA analyst hadn't slept since before the Roxxcart incident. He saw Sylvie open her mouth to protest from beside him. "But not for too long."
Sylvie seemed to accept that compromise, nodding as she sank down to a relatively clear spot on the floor of the destroyed building. "We have a lot of work ahead of us."
Mobius's voice was a quiet, sarcastic murmur. "Yeah, looking forward to it."
Time didn't really exist in the Void, same as in the TVA. The sky remained light.
Loki caught the occasional glimpse of purple from within the black, smoky form of Alioth as the creature devoured structure after structure. Sometimes, he could even hear the beast's roars, even across the large distance between them.
He could hear the soft snores of the others over the dying crackles of the fire. It was a small peace in such a horrid place.
Occasionally, he caught Sylvie's gaze from the other side of Mobius. She wasn't able to sleep either, same as him. He supposed the other Lokis were so used to sleeping in this place that it had long since stopped bothering them. As for Mobius, the man had clearly been dead tired in every way. It was a wonder he'd made it as long as he had.
Speaking of Mobius...
A foot connected with the back of Loki's shoulder and he gasped in surprise.
When he glanced behind him, he found that while his friend was very well asleep, his face was twisted in some form of unhappiness. A soft whimper escaped his lips, adding to Loki's growing concern.
Mobius was having a nightmare. The calm, collected man who always seemed to have a hold over himself was having a nightmare.
Loki supposed it wasn't unreasonable, given all the chaos the former TVA agent had been put through as of recent- which Loki would reluctantly admit was his own fault to some extent. But, still. It was an unnerving sight.
"What do we do?" Loki mouthed to Sylvie, who'd also noticed his sleeping friend's distress.
"Leave it to me." She returned.
He watched as Sylvie reached up- they were practically both at Mobius's feet- and rested a hand on the agent's arm. A green light flashed, briefly, before it faded.
Mobius stilled, falling into a restful sleep with an audible exhale of air.
A small smile formed on Loki's lips at the sight of his friend being relaxed once more.
Sylvie returned the gesture.
"Thank you."
She smiled a little wider. "Don't mention it."
If Mobius knew about any of it, he didn't mention it.
