Pa Pettigrew- 2nd generation Irish immigrant. A quiet, stern man. Carries himself with wisdom and authority. Deeply religious, and loving towards his wife and children. Has respect for the law, and disapproves keeping stills, but never ratted out his neighbors to the revenuers. Tully and Hank did their shine-running without his knowledge...or did they? Literate enough to read his Bible and sign his name.
Mama Pettigrew- A sweet, if soft-hearted woman. Made resilient from mountain life. Raised nine children in the 1920s-30s Appalachias, with help from Mammy Chloe, and not done yet. Thick as thieves with Chloe. Was distraught when her sons left to fight in the war. Completely illiterate.
Mammy Chloe (referenced in 'Blind Man's Bluff Raid' in Tully's anecdote)- Live in housekeeper, and second mother to all nine Pettigrew children. A large, no-nonsense black mammy, who made her way up from Mississippi to Kentucky. She moved in when the Mr. and Mrs. were expecting Benny, to help a swamped Mrs Pettigrew, working without pay. Literate, and taught some of the children to read and write. Fiercely attached to her adoptive family.
Henry "Hank" Pettigrew (27 years)- eldest Pettigrew child. Best friend to brothers Tully and Benjamin. Acts as the man of the house since his father has been laid up with a broken ankle, and his brothers went to war. Can read and write. He writes the family letters to Tully and Ben, and reads their (Tully's and Ben's) letters aloud to the whole family.
-Spouse: Emma-Jean. Children: Sebastian "Seb", Matilda "'Tilda", and Tully-Ben.
Beatrice "Bea" Pettigrew (26 years old)- elder twin (not identical), straight-laced and strict, but kind-hearted. Can read and write.
-Spouse: Charles Whittaker. Children: 5 rambunctious boys, unnamed.
Bridget Pettigrew (26 years old)- younger twin(not identical), wild, flowering soul. Can read, but doesn't write well.
-Spouse: Tyler Harrigan. Children: expecting.
Tully Pettigrew (24 years old)- well, you know. Best friends with older brother Hank and younger brother Ben.
Benjamin "Ben" Pettigrew (22 years old)- mischievous, a little ornery, best friends with both his older brothers, but especially with Tully. (Nicknamed Tully "Bandit" after he started running moonshine behind their father's back.) Joined the Marines when Tully joined the Army. Can read and write, but neither very well.
Anna Pettigrew (17 years old)- a gentle soul, very attached to the farm animals. She has a special touch with any animal she meets. Spent a lot of time with Tully caring for the animals, and watching the sunset from the rooftop of the family home. Cannot read or write.
