Well, here we are. I want to say I was a die hard Bensler fangirl. I shipped them for years and I wanted Stabler to come back, but then one night I stumbled on Rafael Barba and the incredible chemistry he had with Olivia Benson and my heart was stolen. I love how they communicate without words and how Rafael was ready to help her in every way. So here I am, a Barson fan! I hope you'll like this little fic and please forgive me for my mistakes, I am not english.
Rafael Barba was not the kind of man you would likely find running on a Sunday morning on the dock of the Hudson River. He hated running in public, he usually used the gym of his apartment complex to keep in shape he used to exercise to unwind but he liked to do it in private.
So, the reason he was in a tight leggins freezing his ass off had to be important. He was running in circle trying not to attract the attention of the many newyorkers doing their morning sport routine or just taking a walk. Now that he was thinking of it, he could have just walked there and casually buy a coffee to drink while watching the boats on the river. He huffed at himself, he was being ridiculous. He was the kind of man who knew what he wanted and how to get it but not when it came to women.
He was emotionally inept since the while Yelina's debacle but it was the first time in ages that he felt he had to risk whatever was left of his heart. It was his fourth lap when the reason of this charade appeared. Wearing a simple jeans with a black long coat, here she was pushing Noah's stroller. The little guy was clearly having a great time, so was his favorite lieutenant judging by the smile on her face. Noah immediately spotted him and cried out his name dragging the attention of his mother and some tracers passing by as well.
"Raf!"
He couldn't not smile. It warmed his heart to look at the adoration that the little Benson always showed when they meet.
"Hola amigo!" He said back running toward Olivia. "Hi Liv" he said to a smirking Olivia before crouching to Noah to give him a high five. "¿Como estas?" he asked in Spanish. He was kind of training him to understand Spanish and Noah was beginning to speak a few words too for his and Olivia's delight.
"Estoy bien!" He said in a loud voice.
"Counselor, I never would have said that you were a jogger!" Her smirk was back and he couldn't stop the thought of kissing that mouth.
He responded in kind "Of course I am, lieutenant. The suit is just the half of it, the rest... I have to work for" .
He couldn't believe the once over Olivia gave him and the smirk on his face wasn't something he had control on, so when Olivia saw it she tried to scold her face. "Don't flatter yourself, Barba"
But Rafael could see the pink on her cheeks and it wasn't for the cold. He decided to give her a break. "Can I buy you a drink? Maybe an ice cream for Noah?".
"Ice cream!" the little boy was literally jumping in his stroller "Please mama!"
Olivia couldn't say no at his face and they all know it.
When Barba came back to mother and son they were engrossed looking at birds being fed by an old couple. He had his hands full between their two coffees and Noah's chocolate icecream. Olivia helped him and they quietly sit sipping their steaming coffees.
"So..." she began "whats your Sunday's plan?"
"Mmh" he said taking a sip "I don't really have a plan. I think I'll head home, have a little lunch and then work..."
"What about your mum?" sometimes she wondered what he really did when he wasn't at the office or at the precint. She often imagined him having social meetings, dinner and things like that. During their first years working together she and her squad often interrupted his personal time to find out he was on a yacth or at the opera or at a fancy dinner but lately he didn't seem to do that anymore and she found herself asking if he was maybe seeing someone. She knew it was a dangerous territory but sometimes they were so in tune it was a little scary and she didn't want to share the ability to understand each other with a simple look. Her squad often nagged her about it asking when they finally would do something about it.
"Oh, my mother is busy with her charity project today. I am all alone" he answered looking at Noah who already had half face covered in icecream.
Well, that answer my question about him seeing someone
She waited for a while before asking "Would you like to come home with us? We could have lunch together" she heard herself asking and almost regretted it before his eyes made contact with hers. His green eyes showed something more than gratitude.
"I'd love to, if you'll have me. But I would like to go home to change. This outfit is not appropriate for a lunch."
They laughed together drawing the attention of a chocolate covered Noah who beamed at them.
