Music to My Ears - The 149th Hunger Games
Prologue 1 | Cardiac
A bloodcurdling scream erupted into the evening air, right outside of Trade Capital.
Trade Capital was a large, three story building in the middle of the Capitol. Many investors would meet there every day to discuss finances and, most importantly, district quotas. But tonight it was empty, aside from President Orchid and his bodyguard, Michael.
President Orchid jumped six feet in the air when he heard the scream, bolting for the front door. Michael followed him, gasping for air. Orchid could always run faster than Michael, even without Michael's current limp from an escalator accident a few weeks ago. The age difference was vast, Orchid at 43 and Michael only being 19. Even Orchid didn't know Michael's last name, the boy only narrowly missing becoming an Avox after starting a riot in the Capitol. Orchid had taken a liking to him during his (incredibly biased) trial, and took him in instead.
The unlikely duo crashed through the door, nearly falling on top of each other outside. The scream came from a middle aged woman with beautiful brown skin. Her long black hair was covering her eyes, and she was dressed in simple yet well kept rags, if you could even call them that. She seemed like a normal woman, but Orchid recognized her immediately.
She called herself Vladia. She would find her way into Orchid's office once a month, somehow undetected. She would say she came from District 14, but there was no one named Vladia in the books. During those visits, she would give Orchid a tarot card reading before making an abrupt exit. Orchid loved that kind of thing, and often wondered how she found out.
But now, she laid in front of the two men, completely motionless. Not one breath escaped her lips as her face slowly began to lose it's color. The autopsy would later say that she died of a sudden heart attack, but Orchid wouldn't buy it for a second.
As Orchid called for help, Michael noticed the cards strewn around the sidewalk. He figured they must have fallen when she did. But something caught his eye. One of the cards was clutched in her hand.
He slowly pried her fingers off, only to discover a second card under the first. The first card was of the devil, and was sitting reversed. The second was the wheel of fortune sitting upright.
A/N: I draw comics, not write novels. I challenged myself with this first prologue to not include any dialogue, so apologies if it sucks. There'll be more dialogue in the second!
