DINNER AT THE HAWTHOWNE HOUSE
Ben, Kate an Max are all seated around the dinner table.
BEN:
'Wow! This smells great! Now who can argue with Taco Tuesday? Right guys?'
KATE:
'Yes, but I have to watch out for the cheese.'
MAX:
'Sahar's mother makes a dessert with cheese! Kanafa. It's really good!'
KATE:
'Perhaps we can sell some at the school bake sale next month. I don't know if Abigail Hodges will attend anymore. She used to bring the cutest little chocolate chip loaded sugar cookies.'
BEN:
'After the arraignment hearing it actually sounds like they may drop the case against her. That might happen today.'
KATE:
'Well if I was wrongfully accused of murdering my husband I might not volunteer at school functions any more!'
BEN:
'I don't think I would ever accuse you of that. Listen, the sheriff did what he thought was right. I can't go around questioning him at his job.'
KATE:
'There is just so much going on right now. The town doctor you hired was a fraud. No real history of practicing medicine whatsoever.'
MAX:
'What? How did you all figure that out? When did this happen?'
BEN:
'He was arrested when he broke onto the military base.'
Max is stunned that his parents are saying this, thinking they are talking about Harry.
BEN:
He stole Harry Vanderspeigle's truck to do it.'
MAX:
'Wait, you mean Dr. Stone?'
BEN:
'Well, that wasn't his real name. They found out he took the identity of someone else. Dr. Vanderspeigle is helping us out while we find someone permanent.'
MAX:
'Kewl! I like Dr. Vanderspeigle! He is actually a nice person.'
KATE:
'Now that's a great attitude to have Max! It might take some time for your father to find a real doctor that the town can trust next time, and the next election is only a year away.'
Ben looks down as he feels the pressure to do better for his wife.
BACK AT THE CLINIC
Harry is back at the clinic helping multiple patients.
HARRY MONTAGE NARRATION:
Harry is helping numerous patients at the clinic.
'It is good to be back at work again, especially since I am without my cabin. The great Jerry Orbach once said, 'Home Alone' is a movie, not an alibi. He was a genius. I like fixing humans. That is my genius. With Andy gone and my cell phone lost I can't make calls or search the internet outside of my office.'
Sheriff Mike is shown helping his father carry the oxygen tank into the waiting room. He is moving slow and his eyes are bloodshot. Harry sees them and stops to speak to them.
HARRY:
'Do you have an appointment to see me today?'
MIKES FATHER:
'Yes. Actually my son booked an appointment for me to see the former guy that played doctor right here...right under our noses.'
HARRY:
'Well I am glad you are seeing me instead. I can probably cure you.'
Mike's father smiles like that would be a miracle, while Asta who overheard this and seems equally shocked.
MIKE:
'Whoa there! Dr. V made numerous scientific advancements in the treatment of the human heart, but I think we need to manage expectations here a little here Doc.'
HARRY:
Harry continues as if Mike didn't even speak.
'I need you to drink this bottle of water before you go to the examination room. I will go study your file.'
Harry walks away and Asta follows him.
ASTA:
'Cure him? You can't just say that Harry! It will only lead to heartbreak.'
HARRY:
'But I will cure him.'
ASTA:
'Cured with a bottle of water? Come on Harry.'
HARRY:
'Water is good for everyone. I'd tell all my patients that if it made a difference. I knew he would listen. I do need his file.'
Asta rolls her eyes in disbelief and walks away to get his file.
RENTAL CAR DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD
Real Andy is driving with the radio playing Whitney Houston.
RADIO:
'Learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all.'
A worried Andy seems annoyed by the song and turns off the radio.
ANDY:
'Hi there Dr. Vanderspeigle. I wanted to apologize. We got off on the wrong foot.'
Andy doesn't like the ring of it and starts over.
ANDY:
'You may remember me... I was wondering if we could talk?'
Andy shakes his head no again. He parks his rental car in front of the clinic and tries again.
ANDY:
'You seem to have made a very friendly clone of my wife and I just wanted to thank you.'
ANDY:
'Here, I washed the blanket this time. It was sorta dirty. Can I have my shirt back?
Andy grimaces again.
'Awe screw it. Just go with the flow?'
OUTSIDE OF A STORE
Deputy Liv is walking down the street and sees Max and Sahar unlocking their bikes outside the store and pedaling off in different directions.
LIV:
'Hi Max!'
MAX:
'Hi officer Liv. Did you arrest Dr. Stone?'
LIV:
'No, but I am glad they caught him. Aren't you?'
MAX:
'Yeah, I wonder if it was my fault though. Did he really break into that military base?'
LIV:
'That's what they are saying. That's where he was arrested.'
'Max, did you know that the police can often fix things without someone getting arrested.'
MAX:
'Yeah, I guess.'
LIV:
'So if something is wrong you know I can help you, right? Like I did with my sketch drawing.'
MAX:
'Sure, but everything is okay now.'
LIV:
'Okay. That's so good to hear, but if there is a way I can help I want you to let me know.'
MAX:
'All right. I will.'
LIV:
'You know, not that you should ever ride your bike at night, I have some extra bicycle reflectors that I used to have on my bike. I can give them, to you.'
'They always make your tires look like they're going super fast.'
MAX:
'Thanks! That would be awesome!'
LIV:
'Now you be safe on that bike. Being late is better than being hurt.'
Max pedals his bike away as Liv goes inside the store.
CLINIC WAITING ROOM:
Andy walks into the clinic and asks Jay for an appointment to see the doctor.
JAY:
'Well, he's like working right now.'
ANDY:
'My wife twisted her ankle and Harry said I could see him to pick up a prescription. Just give me the next available appointment.'
Nurse Ellen passes by and remembers Andy.
NURSE ELLEN:
'What are you doing here again?'
JAY:
'He has an appointment. He is next.'
NURSE ELLEN:
'Eww...gross!' as she walks away.
Andy seems puzzled by the rude greeting, but he decides not to let it deter him and stays seated.
EXAMINATION ROOM
Harry is in the examination room with Mike and his father.
HARRY:
'You have hypertension brought on by an enlarged aorta. There are new sound treatment therapies that can actually harden the muscle tissue which will in turn reduce the pressure on the valve. In a few days it will return to it's normal size. Would you like to try it?
MIKE:
'He has never been much on surgeries Doctor V.'
HARRY:
'This is not a surgery. It will not even break the skin.'
MIKES FATHER:
'Sounds good to me.'
Harry secretly places the gravitation disc in a pillow and places the pillow on the examination table. He then pulls out a spectrometer which is acting as a decoy and plugs it in. Harry then pulls out ear plugs and puts then in his ears, and hands a pair to Mike's father to do the same.
HARRY:
'Due to the sharp frequency of the device I ask that everyone else leave the room for just a few minutes.'
With everyone else standing in the hallway, Harry pulls out the device and adjusts the settings, places the device on his back and presses the button which lights up for three seconds.
MIKES FATHER:
'Well I'll be damned if I don't feel better already.'
Harry goes to get Asta and Mike from the hallway and returns to see Mike's father standing upright with the oxygen tank in one hand and his cane in the other as he is ready to leave the office with a cloned heart. As they all walk, Harry continues to talk.
HARRY:
'Now I want you to drink several glasses of water each day and no strenuous activity for the next six hours. If you still get dizzy and need the oxygen after a day I want you to call the office. The pain pills are no longer necessary.'
Asta and Mike are stunned.
WAITING ROOM
Harry follows them to the waiting room to see them off.
MIKES FATHER:
'I can't believe how much better I feel! Thank you doctor!'
Andy stands up and Harry shrieks when he sees him.
MIKE:
'You okay doc? You look like you just meet your assassin.'
Jay looks at Harry like he is weird as Harry tries to mind-meld with Andy but fails.
ASTA:
'We thought you left?'
Andy is puzzled by Asta's remark.
HARRY:
'I am fine. I just thought he had left too.'
MIKE:
'Okay doc. Thanks again. Just call me if you ever need anything.'
Harry grabs Andy's arm and pulls him toward his office and Mike and his father leave.
OUTSIDE THE CLINIC
Trevor from the cabin sees Sheriff Mike getting into his car and stops him.
TREVOR:
'Hi Sheriff! I was hoping you could do me a favor.'
MIKE:
'How can I help?'
TREVOR:
'I have this box with of few more random things Harry left behind. Clothing from the dryer... Vitamins... A cooler... I was just hoping you could give them to him.'
MIKE:
'His office is right there. He's inside.'
TREVOR:
'I know, but I don't want him to ask to return to the cabin anymore. He's called a dozen times. I think my wife is getting scared. The guy really likes his Law and Order.'
MIKE:
'Sure thing. Put it in the back of my truck and I'll make certain he gets it.'
DOCTORS OFFICE
Harry and Andy walk into the doctor's office for some privacy.
ANDY:
'It's not that I'm not truly grateful, but I was hoping you might be able to help me a little bit more.'
HARRY:
'I thought I told you to stay away for a week. It's only been a few days.'
ANDY:
'I know, but seeing all of the good you've done for me I hoped you might not mind.'
HARRY:
'You came to my cabin to KILL me!'
ANDY:
'Oh, that! I was in a bad place then. My wife had left me and I was unemployed.'
HARRY:
'What do you want from me now?'
ANDY:
'I sort of need my shirt back. It was birthday present.'
HARRY:
'You can consider it gone forever. No longer of this universe.'
ANDY:
'Well, can you at least give me a job?'
HARRY:
'This is not a job interview. Now leave.'
ANDY:
'My wife seems to think I work here. Here in this office as an assistant or something.'
'I guess you don't have to pay me much. Ya know, $100 doesn't go very far these days.'
HARRY:
'Do you know the radio commercial about the Kaboom exterminators?'
ANDY:
'Yeah. The silly one, 'the only good pest is a dead pest', right?'
HARRY:
'Stay in here and practice doing that radio commercial! Get so good at it that people will think you did it.'
ANDY:
'What?'
'Why? Do you find that soothing?'
HARRY:
'I can get you a job at the radio station Friday, but you must master that voice. Trust me, I know you can.'
'Until then you can sit in this office practicing it.'
ANDY:
'...and pretend that I work here? Like I don't have to do any work or anything, right?'
HARRY:
'Yes, and please don't help. I'll give you your wallet and phone tomorrow.'
SHERIFFS OFFICE
Ben is watching as Mike is moving the large murder board for Sam's case in the office when the phone rings. Mike asks deputy Liv to answer.
LIV:
'Sheriff's Office, Liv speaking.'
The caller is the same lab technician that called Mike, this time after testing the new foot.
SEM:
'Thank God it is you deputy! The sheriff tries to get me to hit on him.'
'I'm calling with the DNA results for the right foot. It's a match.'
LIV:
'So the new foot is also from Harry Vanderspeigle? I guess that means we are just waiting for the other boot to drop.'
MIKE:
'That's the lab? Put that shit on speaker!'
MIKE:
'So you say the new foot is from the same Vanderspeigle guy? I just saw him today.'
SEM:
'Yes. the DNA is identical, but it's not the same.'
MIKE:
'You again... What do you mean? You mean it's not a second left feet? I could have promised you that.'
SEM:
'No, I mean it's in completely different condition. The skin on this one is very soft.'
MIKE:
'So here we go again with the foot fetish thing again. Just send us the report and we will continue to investigate.'
SEM:
'I did just email the report, but you don't get it. This one has skin like a baby's skin. it's just so tender and soft. It's been pampered.'
MIKE:
'And to think you get paid for this...'
SEM:
'Listen, normally I can tell the age of the victim by noticing certain things. Scars, callouses, bunions. It's like this foot spent a life in a wheelchair. It's like it was born yesterday.'
MIKE:
'Is that the end of the forensic foot poetry? We've got work to do.'
SEM:
'Just don't be surprised if your foot somehow came from another person, that's all.'
MIKE:
'Duly noted. Consider this call a confirmation of your findings.'
Mike ends the phone and Ben looks at a text on his cell phone at the same time.
BEN:
'The DA just confirmed that he is dropping the case against Abigail Hodges due to lack of evidence. At least you did your best.'
MIKE:
'Dammit, I know there is more to this case! I know I have it. It is here somewhere.'
Mike stops to stare at the murder board some more.
'This whole chopped off foot thing is a damn distraction. Somebody's laughing at us now, but we will put him away.'
'I'm going to call Harry after I check up on my father tomorrow morning.'
BEN:
'I hope we can somehow convince Doctor Vanderspeigle to stay.'
MIKE:
'You and me both. My father was practically doing cartwheels out of his office today. It was like witnessing a miracle.'
MAIN STREET
Darcy is sitting on the bench across the street from her bar as Ben walks by.
BEN:
'You again.'
DARCY:
'Don't worry. I'm in no mood to kiss anyone right now.'
BEN:
What's the matter?
DARCY:
'Have you ever been afraid to tell people when you are worried about something?'
BEN:
'Like every five minutes.'
DARCY:
'No, I mean really afraid. Like wondering if it would be a good idea to just leave and start over in a place where nobody knows you?'
BEN:
'Having to leave is literally my worst fear, and it should be yours too Darcy. This town wouldn't be the same without you.'
DARCY:
'I just hate to be so scared, and I cannot tell anyone. I feel so alone.'
BEN:
'Yet you are telling me.'
DARCY:
'Yeah, but you are different.'
'I don't know. I guess this whole Dr. Stone going to prison thing has me questioning my decisions.'
BEN:
'You and me both. If anyone wanted to blame someone else for Dr. Stone, they would literally be blaming me.'
'I expect it to come up during the next election. I placed a cheap ad in a national newspaper and look at all the trouble I caused. He was the only one that showed any interest, so finding a real doctor won't be a easy.'
DARCY:
'You did your best. His crime doesn't make you a conspirator, unless you are bailing him out of jail.'
BEN:
'I feel better now that we talked.
DARCY:
'You know, me too. I can blame you!'
Darcy smiles.
BEN:
'Well, you always have a true friend in me, even if I am the cause of your trouble.'
DARCY:
'Thank you. I guess if I'm not leaving town...I better get back to work.'
Darcy starts walking away.
BEN:
'Hey Darcy. About the other night when you kissed me.'
DARCY:
'I am so sorry. Please forget it ever happened. I was having a terrible day.'
BEN:
'I'm the mayor and my wife is a chair on the PTA.'
Ben pauses, looking for a better way to say it.
'You know, I just want you to know it's not like I haven't thought about it too.'
DARCY:
'Thanks.'
Darcy seems a little embarrassed yet pleased to know her instincts were not completely wrong.
FORENSIC LABORATORY
A man wearing a white shirt carrying a clipboard is pacing throughout the lab while the lab techs watch him. He is their manager.
MANAGER:
'All right people. It is the end of the month, so you know what that means? That's right, we need to report findings to the state.'
'And if you remember correctly, a third of our funding comes for providing research or research opportunities. Promoting research of cases that our universities can study. A third of your paycheck depends on you finding something more interesting than the mold on your lunch sandwich.'
'This month, I will personally give $20 to any person that has an interesting case study for further research. Do I have any takers? Anyone? Bueller?'
One person raises his hand.
SEM:
'I have something that is completely unexplainable.'
The manager approaches him.
'Two feet from the same person. One shows the typical aging of a middle aged man, while the second is fully formed with little to no signs of use at all.'
MANAGER:
'So this victim hand a bad leg and used crutches for most of his life. That's not exactly a marvel.'
SEM:
'But the police investigating say that the victim, who was also a doctor, is still alive...and is walking around on two feet. It's like this guy is cloning himself. I can't find another explanation for this fully formed foot.'
The manager closely looks at both feet and quickly slams a twenty dollar bill on the table in front of him.
MANAGER:
'This may be the best case study ever!'
MOTEL ROOM AT NIGHT
Harry is showing Asta the motel room.
ASTA:
'How did Andy rip a shower curtain? How are you showering now?'
HARRY:
'I stand in the corner and reflect all water onto the wall.'
There is a knock at the door. Harry answers and it's Deputy Liv.
LIV:
'Hi Doctor V. I'm sorry if I'm interrupting anything.'
HARRY:
'You are here for me! Can I return to my cabin now? I need just a minute get my things.'
LIV:
'No, I just wanted to talk to you. Again, I am afraid I came at a bad time.'
HARRY:
'What is it? I am happy to help.'
ASTA:
'Come on Liv, you can say it.'
LIV:
'Well, Sheriff Mike probably won't ask you, but...'
ASTA:
'What is it? You can tell us?'
LIV:
'Mike is very pleased with the way you've helped his father today.'
'For him, it's been the only good news of the day. He's really puzzled by this whole 'Extra feet for Doctor V' issue. That seems to be drawing some attention with the lab, today the charges against Abigail Hodges were dropped.'
Liv looks at both of them to see if they have anything else to say, but they do not crack.
LIV:
'That's it I guess. Thank you. If there is anything else you can do to help us please give me a call.'
Deputy Liv goes back to her car and looks a second time at all of the clinical trials that Harry Vanderspeigle and Sam Hodges co-authored in scientific journals.
POLICE TRUCK DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN THE MORNING
Mike is driving into work and pulls over to use his cell phone. He calls his father.
MIKE:
'How are you feeling this morning?'
Mike is happy to hear the good news.
'Okay, that is just incredible! Just incredible!' Listen, I'm going to call the doctor. I'll be certain to tell him.'
Mike releases the call and pulls out a business card that has Harry's cell phone number on it. He punches in the number and hears a phone ringing in the back of his truck. He looks in the box and finds Harry's cell phone.
DOCTORS OFFICE
Mike knocks and enters the office where Harry and Andy are sitting.
MIKE:
'Hi Doctor V. I come bringing gifts.'
Mike looks at Andy.
'I thought you left town?'
ANDY:
'I didn't know my whereabouts were so interesting.'
MIKE:
'You do realize that is the most coherent thing you've ever said to me, honey...'
Andy looks very confused about being called honey while Mike places the box on Harry's desk and begins unpacking.
MIKE:
'Here is your cell phone...and some extra shirts...and a cooler...and some vitamins.
HARRY:
'My cell phone! Thank you! I thought I lost it in the lake.'
MIKE:
'Although Trevor is still doing work on the cabin and can't leave this week, he did find these things he thought were yours.'
HARRY:
'I can't tell you how much I missed my phone. Now I can order pizza no matter where I am.'
MIKE:
'Well good. I also wanted to thank you for what you did for my father. I just spoke to him and he's feeling even better today.'
HARRY:
'Here, give this cooler to Liv. It isn't mine.'
Harry hands the red and white cooler to Mike without looking inside of it.
MIKE:
'Are you sure? Why Liv?'
HARRY:
'I'd never use it and it's better than her drink bucket.'
MIKE:
'Okay, doc. I will. Thank you again! Have a great day.'
Mike carries the cooler out and places it in the back of his truck. The cooler slides as the truck turns onto the street. When the truck hits a bump at a turn it flips on it's side. Two bottles of botulinum toxin roll out, along with a syringe and rubber gloves.
