I hope you like this new story. It's finished already and am currently proofreading. I think I'll be able to post a chapter a week, no promises though :)
Comments are welcome as alwaysIt was a sunny day in Toronto. Birds were chirping, People were laughing and kids were playing in the Park. To Gail it was almost too perfect and hadn't it been for the dead body in front of her she might have believed she was dreaming. It was Chris who was with her, he also looked weary of his surroundings while Rodney looked for wounds. Something just felt off. Something about this woman felt familiar, but at the same time different. Maybe it was the way the woman was draped, maybe it was the way her hair was made. But maybe, maybe it was the note that was pinned to her shirt:
I am back and I can't wait to play with you
Earlier
Gail was patrolling the streets of Toronto with Chris by her side. It had been a quiet day so far and apart from some speeding tickets and some warnings nothing major had happened.
"It's a nice day, don't you think? Everyone's so happy and smiling," Chris started.
"It's a horrible day! Everyone is so happy and smiling," Gail answered matter of factly.
"Don't be like that Gail," Chris answered and ruffled her hair. Gail pushed him off but laughed nonetheless.
They were walking down Dundas Road and were about to reach Yonge where their car was parked when suddenly their radio crackled to live.
"All officers, we have a 10-44 at University Park. Is there a unit available to attend?" the static voice asked.
"15-15 10-04," Gail answered the radio, hurrying up a little already.
"Copy 15-15, how long?" they asked.
"About 10, 10-03," she answered.
"Copy," they answered. Chris turned on the siren and drove them quickly towards University Park. Even during rush hour it took just a little over five minutes to reach the park but another 10 to walk up to where the dead body was. It was an elderly couple who found the young woman lying in a rather unused part of the Park.
The first thing Gail saw was the victim's hair. She had long brown, wavy hair. Her dark blue eye coal mixed well with the hair color. Gail was happy that the woman's eyes were closed.
Next she saw her clothes, she was wearing a off-white blouse that was black on the front. Along with it, she was wearing black pants and open heels. On top of her shirt she was wearing a fitting black jacket. She must have planned to go to a fancy party, Gail thought.
"Okay Chris, let's call the coroner and secure the scene," she said and walked over to their bag where their tape was.
"Coroner's already on the way," Chris told her while she handed him one of the tapes. They secured the area and while they were waiting for the coroner Gail took the chance to ask the elderly couple some questions.
"Okay, so Mr. Soden, you said you and your wife were walking your dog through the Park when you found the body?" Gail summed up all the information she gathered while walking up to the dead woman.
"Yes Officer, our Daisy was pulling me towards these trees and I wondered why since she never showed any interest in this area of the Park," he explained and Gail looked down at their Rottweiler and almost chuckled when she thought about how people react when the couple calls for Daisy and this dog appears.
"Did you touch the body?" Gail continued.
"Just to check whether or not she has a pulse, I lifted her arm and checked her wrist, but I tried to not disturb or change her position," he explained.
"That's good, thank you. For now I don't have more questions, but maybe when our coroners here. We will come back to you if so. Thank you again for calling us," Gail explained and gave back the ID`s before joining Chris at the tape.
"I wonder what has happened to her," Chris said, his eyes scanning the area.
"Me too, but I also wonder where Rodney is," Gail said. Just this moment they saw the coroner's car driving towards their direction.
"Also, why we walked and he drives here," Chris laughed.
"Chris, Gail," Rodney said in greeting as he walked up the last few meters.
"Rodney," they said in unison lifting the tape for the doctor.
"Okay so what do we have," he asked.
"As you can see, female victim. We did not touch her yet, the couple who found her checked her pulse but that's it so far," Gail explained. Rodney nodded and kneeled down so he could see more details.
"Okay I see no wounds but maybe they are under her blouse, can you hand me my camera so I can take pictures before we open it?" he asked pointing to his bag. Gail moved over to his bag and picked up his camera. She offered it to him and he moved around taking at least 50 pictures from different angles. Gail remembered how Holly was all about different angels and how important they were because just then you could get the whole picture.
"Let's see what's under your jacket," Rodney whispered and leaned down.
"Bit pervy Doc, don't you think," Gail snickered and Chris and even Rodney joined in. Their laughter died down when the jacket fell open and they saw a note pinned to the woman's chest.
I am back and I can't wait to play with you
They looked at each other in shook, what could this note mean.
"Rodney, take pictures of it and send it over to us as soon as possible. I'll call the tech, where they are; they have to gather as much information as possible, also I'll call Traci where she is," Gail said once she recovered from the shook. She pushed the button on her radio waiting for it to come to live.
"15-15. Tech status required. Also Detective Nash required on scene," Gail said while Chris taped a bigger area around the victim.
"Techs will be there in five along with me," Traci answered her, "found something?"
"Yes, drive to the location of Rodney's car, that's where we are," Gail said.
As Traci arrived Rodney had already removed the note and secured it in a plastic bag so that she could have a look at it.
"Okay do you have anything for me yet?" She asked Rodney while looking at the note.
"Not really no, she has no obvious wounds and without the technicians I did not want to move her too much, there's no blood around her, I didn't see any specific marks on her. My best guess at the moment is, she was poisoned but I have to confirm first," he explained to her. The Technicians followed his instructions quickly and quietly, so Rodney could head out soon and start the autopsy.
"I need one to stick around and one to go back to the station with me," Traci told Chris and Gail.
"Let Gail get out of the sun, I'll stay here," Chris answered but looked over at Gail for her confirmation. She nodded and radioed it in.
Once Gail and Traci were at the stations Traci gave instructions as to what their next steps will be.
"I want a list of all recently released convicts, as well as a list of cases that might be related to this one. Oh and check if prisons called in for missing convicts," she told Gail sternly while they were walking towards her desk.
"I'll check if we have her in the system to find out who she is. You did not find a bag in the Park did you?" she asked.
"No, no bag or anything else that could indicate where she was heading to or where she came from, also nothing that could tell us who she is," Gail said before she made her way over to her own desk.
Getting the lists ready was not the hard part, not even connecting cases to recently released murderers. The hard part was that there was no one that fit the profile. Of course a lot of murderers were released lately, some of them were doing their time for killing women, but none of them seemed to be that bold, this crazy to kill a woman and place her like that and furthermore leave a note like the one they found.
Nonetheless Gail checked the cases and the convicts and wrote down all names that could even be slightly possible. In addition to this she also added names of convicts who threatened Police men before. After about five hours of researching and calling prisons as well as parole officers her list had about 100 names on it.
"Traci I just sent you the list," she said as she went over to Traci's desk.
"Unfortunately no one pings. I still wrote down the names of the convicts even if it seemed highly unlikely. But I figured at this point we do not really have a choice, nor do we know anything," Gail explained.
"Did you check prisons?" Traci asked.
"Yes if you open the file there are three lists. One with all the convicts who are in prison or served time for a crime similar to this one, the second one is with all open cases that seem similar and the last list is basically the same as the first except all convicts that were unable to commit a crime due to prison or other restrictions," Gail explained.
"Hmm, that is unfortunately not that much; we have to wait for the lab results it seems. Did Rodney call you yet?" Traci asked. As Gail shook her head she slumped back in her seat.
"Okay, why don't you go home and sleep. There's not much we can do until Rodney calls and you've been on shift for 10 hours already," Traci proposed.
