Prologue

The moons were high in the sky that night. Too bright for an excellent escape. Two full, one a sliver of light, like a claw.

Why tonight, of all nights? Why couldn't Cora have planned this better?

But it had to happen tonight, or the dragonet would be lost. The Starwing queen was close on Rigel's tail, but still far enough that if he could find a cave, he could hide.

"RIGEL!" bellowed the voice of Queen Silver. "COME BACK AND I'LL SPARE YOU AND YOUR USELESS EGG!"

The offer was so tempting… She's lying, Rigel reminded himself. She'll kill my dragonet and maybe me and oh no what about Cora?

He was scanning the trees, looking for somewhere he could take refuge, when a dragon suddenly lunged at him from behind one of the giant oak trees.

They grabbed him and yanked him sideways, down into a small cave hidden behind the oak. The cold, hard rock smacked him in the back as he hit the bottom of the hole.

Rigel growled and spun around to see his attacker.

"SSSHHHHH!" the dragon hissed. "Do you want your queen to find us?"

A small glow started to fill the cave. A very familiar glow.

"Cora?"

"Of course it's me, you sloth-brain."

He felt his wings relax as Cora's golden silhouette appeared in the darkness. She was so beautiful.

Her golden-yellow scales shone next to the glow-scales lining her back. The horns on her head curled backwards down her neck, towards the overlapping patterns of gold and light, unique to one dragon, the love of his life.

"Moons above, you scared the starlight out of me!" Rigel said, grinning.

"You deserved it for getting caught," she scolded. "You scared me half to death when I saw your queen chasing you through the forest!"

"That is not the slightest bit fair."

"It is too," she said, poking him playfully on the snout with her tail. "Besides, I was the one who heroically rescued you and our dragonet."

They both looked down at the small black and silver egg Rigel had in his talons, the playful mood gone.

It looked just like a Starwing egg, so they had hid it along with the rest of the eggs in the hatchery. But they both knew when it hatched, it would not look like a Starwing. He had to get it out before the queen noticed the one dragonet that was not the normal black and silver of a Starwing.

"What do you think will happen if we ever get caught?" Cora asked, worry etched across her face.

"Well, we would probably both get locked up for life, separated, and our dragonet would be executed. But that will never happen!" he added quickly when he saw the terror flash across Cora's face. "We will hide. We will leave the Kingdoms behind and start a new life."

"We could live on one of the islands out to sea," Cora suggested. "No one goes out there anymore, not after the hurricane destroyed everything."

"I think it's a perfect plan"

They smiled at each other, then at the egg clutched in his talons. And together, they lifted off into the sky.
