Chapter 1 A blue vortex

(You know, a backstory with Eragon or else everything will be weird and not properly prepared)

(Also, no Avengers in this chapter, so don't be disappointed)

(I tried to make Eragon's backstory interesting. You guys can try to guess what it is.)

Eragon hums lightly as he slowly descends into the river, sighing in relief as the soothe of the water overcomes the soreness in his bones. The last scuffle was tougher than expected, and the blunt force of the beasts were on a completely different scale compared to the dragons.

"Hmph." Saphira's voice appeared in his mind. "You were too slow."

"Well, I could have stopped them within seconds," Eragon replied, patting the sapphire stone fondly. "But that would've defeated the whole purpose of me being here in first place, remember?"

"Training your body doesn't mean that you should neglect your mental exercises as well." Saphira retorted. "When was the last time you did that again?"

Eragon sighed, running his slender fingers through his wet hair, showing his pointed elf ears, while spreading his consciousness out, ignoring the startled Riders and their whispered greetings, until it had covered the entire island.

It has been a while since he had done this, hearing everything. Deep inside him a part of him thrills at the power, which scares him.

He briefly scanned over the city, making sure that everything is secure, before withdrawing back into his own mind.

"There. Happy?"

"Never the more little one." The voice of Saphira had never sounded so sarcastic.

Eragon sighed again and proceeded to remain silent.

"I really miss you." After a few minutes Eragon suddenly said, as a faint figure of a dragon, so high up in the air that it looks more like a bird crosses his perspective.

"I am always here." Saphira replied, but he knew that she understood what he meant.

Eragon shakes his hair, and quickly changes back into his usual clothing, one of dark blue dragonscale armor and boots. His sword Brisingr as usual is buckled to his left hip, which shines as beautifully as it had for over the hundreds of years, while Adurna-his enchanted wooden bow with agate-blue veins-were hung behind his back.

"I sense a small group of those Vakné," Saphira's voice growled. "Right beside the Border."

Eragon's eyes narrow slightly, "I know. So much for the bath." He carefully secures the small pouch onto this belt, and bounds back into the forest, leaving no sign that someone was here before.

It didn't take him long before he reaches the Border, a long wall of wards that separates Shur'tudras-the city of the Riders-to the Dark Forest, where the unknown beasts roam.

As he runs into the clearing a small fight opens up before him, where a group of Riders were holding back around a dozen of Vakné-an ugly-looking boarlike creature. Multiple dragons were swooping down, intending to eat them until they nearly cracked their teeth.

Seeing this Eragon relaxed slightly and slowed down, watching how the Riders fight off the Vakné.

It was an interesting sight, seeing the different races work together. The Urgals and dwarves were the ones mostly bashing the Vakné around, while the humans and the elves were using the ancient language more, as the soft singing and the incantations fill the air along with the roars.

Eragon didn't do anything, instead he simply leaned on a tree and watched.

A few minutes later the most of the Vakné were killed and the rest heavily injured, where they bunched together and very close to running away.

"Don't let them go." Eragon called out to the Riders.

The Riders bowed respectfully to him, before all charging towards the remaining ones, their weapons flashing in the light.

"Their attacks had increased recently, I wonder why." Eragon spoke to Saphira.

"Maybe they're just trying to go for the eldunarí's." Saphira suggested. "They seemed to have a particular attraction for it."

"Maybe-" Eragon said before he was interrupted by a drawn-out horn-like sound that resounded through the forest, the birds scattering for the sake of scattering.

The Vakné also stopped whatever they were doing and started to run back like mad.

"Eragon-ebrithil!" A human Rider ran up to him, bowing slightly before puffing out "What do we do now?"

Eragon attempted to scan the forest, but the moment he did his mind cracked in pain, as his conscience wandered into a vortex, and it took quite a bit of energy to get out of it.

He shook his head: "I'll go check what is going on, you and the others stay here and repair the wards." Eragon said as his eyebrows furrowed.

The Rider bowed again, turned around to walk back, before turning back and seemed to burst out the words: "Is it true that you fought off ten Skulmia's at once during the Battle of Shur'tudras?"

Eragon's eyes narrows, as his mind flashes back uncontrollably.

"SAPHIRA!"

"No, I didn't, but there was definitely more than one." Eragon recovered and smiled with no warmth at the Rider.

Not bothering to look at the Rider's pale face he turned and ran back into the forest.

It didn't take him long for him to find the anomaly.

"What is that?" Saphira incredulously looked at the blue circle through Eragon's eyes.

"I don't know," Eragon could feel the incredibly strong yet alien-like energy emitting from the dark blue vortex that leads into somewhere unknown.

"We should check it out." Saphira suggested.

"But what if it's a trap?"

"We can't just leave it here, little one. We don't know what it can do to Shur'tudras." Saphira retorted.

Eragon thought about it and eventually decided to go with Saphira's suggestion.

He sat down on the ground and checked his own situation.

Brom's ring? Energy-filled to the rim.

Brisingr? Sharp and gorgeous as ever.

Adurna? Unscratched and pouch-full of arrows.

Mental state? Still scarred from past trauma and wars, but not healthy enough.

Eragon stood up, and stared at the blue circle.

"We haven't had an adventure for a long time, didn't we?"

Saphira huffed in his brain, "Well, it seems that we are having one now, isn't it?"

Eragon smiled and stepped in.

And everything went black.
