As the day's events replayed in Chin's mind, he couldn't help but be quite surprised. Not at the warmth and support Steve had received, that was to be expected, but rather the fact that Danny hadn't received a single letter.
The Detective had given half his liver to his partner, yet hardly anybody seemed to acknowledge that.
Even though it was not quite the same, Chin knew all too well how it felt to receive very little support from "Family". Which the team was supposed to be. Yet all the attention went to Steve who likely wouldn't be alive without Danny.
The more he thought about it, the worse he felt for the blond man. He had to find a way to fix this.
Danny had always been there for him. After having a bomb strapped around his neck. After Malia died. After being kidnapped by Paul Delano. After IA accused him of covering for his murdering-Drug-dealing-cartell-boss brother in law. The Jersey detective had always been the one to check on him in the aftermaths.
The next hospital visit was planned in the afternoon. He still had some time to find a solution.
Truth be told he already had a very simple idea. He just had a bunch of people to contact. It may take a few days, but he knew it would be worthwile.
Danny was not in a good mood, though he attempted to downplay it. He was not a jealous person. Far from it. But he was starting to find the attention Steve received a little exaggerated. The neanderthal wouldn't even be there without him! He wasn't asking for as many cards as Steve, juste a few.
He internally groaned as he saw another large batch of letter being brought in the room by Chin. Undoubtedly all for Steve.
He looked at his friend for a moment and caught something on the older man's face. Hope? Expectency? Danny didn't know.
He didn't think too much about it.
A few moments later, the rest of the team got in the room. Danny looked at Steve and noticed his expression was one of expectence. In the few days they had been in the hospital, Steve had grown to like the letter reading period. Of course, they were all for him.
This time, Chin said he would read the letters. Danny wondered what difference it would make.
Well he soon understood why his friend had that hopefull look when he entered the room.
The first letter was for Danny. It was from Sara.
"Dear uncle Danny, I hope you will get better soon so we can enjoy another barbecue. And I can taste your Lasagnas."
And that was only the first one. The next one was also for him, from Lori, surprisingly.
"Hey Danny, I hope you will get out of the hospital soon. It would be nice to see you and the rest of the team again."
He also got one from Gabby.
"Danny, I know it's been a long time but I heard what happened to you and hope you are recovering well."
Actually all the letters from thw batch were for him. They ranged to people they had helped during their various cases to other people he didn't recognize but suspected were some of Chin and Kono's various aunts, uncles and cousins.
He even received a letter from his former partner's wife, Amy Hanamoa.
"Hi Danny, I hope you are alright. I would have come directly to the hospital but you know how tight my schedule is. Still I will try to come see you when you are out. Don't be shy if you need anything."
Danny didn't know what to say. Looking around him, he realised that only Chin seemed to expect all the letters would be for him.
- It was your doing wasn't it? he asked the older man when everyone else had left and Steve had gone to sleep.
- Yes. And I think you can expect more letters tomorrow.
- You didn't need to —
- Actually I did. Danny you are always there for others when they need you. I sent the word to people we have helped or worked with and the word spread quickly. Though I admit I had to check all the letter were directed to you and were well intentioned.
- Were some of them that dubious? Danny said chuckling slightly.
- Somehow a few Halawa inmates got their hands on paper. Like, not our favourite inmates.
The look on the older man said it all.
- Still, I appreciate the lenght you went through to contact some of these people. Thank you.
- I will admit that some were a bit... It was more difficult for me to reach them, but as I said, it was the least I could do after everything you did for me. I'm still in your corner a 1000%. I know how it feels to receive little support when you need it the most, I feel like I should have done this earlier, but I didn't think so many letter would go to Steve in comparison to you.
Danny nodded, because he didn't have anything to say to this. He suddenly felt exhausted. Chin saw it too.
- Alright, I better let you sleep before I get kicked out by a nurse. See you later.
Danny quickly fell asleep, feeling much better than barely a few hours before.
