5 Years Earlier...

King's Crest was reaching its autumn days. The air grew chillier, and the leaves on the trees turned red as dragonfire. The many heroes who roamed the Nexus did not come by so often at this time, which helped keep the place just a little more peaceful.
In the courtyard of the great castle at the center of this realm, a young boy and his mentor sparred with swords. The boy's name was Galim Dawnbringer, and was the son of a sadly deceased pair of great warriors.
He used his newly-earned magical longsword to parry and deflect the relentless sweeps of his opponent's strikes. Sweat poured from his long brown hair as he struggled to keep his ground, his eyes narrowed in concentration. These eyes were one of his most distinctive features-they were a deep stormy blue, and they glowed like the eyes of a dragon.
His opponent was no less striking. He stood almost seven feet tall, and was quite stocky. His hair was deep and dark brown, with only one streak of gray. His eyes glowed in a very similar manner to his trainee, although they were gold instead of blue.
Although no one would recognize the boy, this man was revered as the king of this entire realm and its greatest champion. After all, he was the legendary Dragon Knight, a wielder of the primordial draconic energies seething just beneath the surface of this realm.
Galim spotted his opportunity. He slashed forward and finally landed a scratch on the Dragon Knight's armor.
The Dragon Knight held up his hand to declare a break. The two sat down on a nearby bench, surrounded by the kingdom's famous roses. Galim thirstily drank some water, while the Dragon Knight stared thoughtfully into the distance.
Once Galim had drank his fill, the Dragon Knight spoke. "Do you know why, of all the strong and healthy young children in this kingdom, I chose you to be my squire?", he asked.
Galim shook his head. He had no idea why he'd stood out, other than his weird eyes. There were lots of young noble warriors, some of whom might have been better candidates for the Dragon Knight's squire than he was.
The Dragon Knight pointed at Galim's eyes, saying, "Those are why. Only ones blessed with the power of dragons have eyes like those. Every Dragon Knight that has ever lived always had those eyes. You are my successor, Galim. I already have two fine and wonderful children, but neither of them holds the raw power of this realm like you do. Verick is the heir of my kingdom, and that will not change, but you are the heir of my power. It is a heavy burden, but I have faith that you will bear it."
He sighed deeply. "I grow old, Galim. One day I will leave this world, and then you will have to take my place. I will soon begin training you for that day, and it will not be easy."
Galim nodded. "I understand, Your Majesty. I will not fail you, no matter what happens."
The Dragon Knight smiled at him. "Then we shall resume your training immediately."
