Being an undercover cop requires special skills that Jay Halstead possessed, thus he was authorized to arrest Arthur… One of the most stupid criminals in Chicago. Without revealing his cover, he managed to sneak into Molly's, interrogate people, find exactly what he needed to lock the man to jail and get the girl.

Gabby Dawson. A paramedic at station 51, sister of his best friend Antonio Dawson. An intelligent, pretty, badass girl who liked him a lot. Plus, she was really great in bed according to him.

Jay thought his life was perfect until that evening at Molly's when he received a bullet on his shoulder… His first shooting after a few years. For a soldier like Halstead, getting hurt was a regular phenomenon, however, the small period of him being healthy with no holes on his body lasted so long that eventually, he had started to forget that burning feeling when a bullet tears your skin took a minute to proceed the reason that the pain had returned and why he was currently being on the ground. His vision abandoned him for a moment. When the wave of dizziness disappeared, he finally stood up achieving his goal, getting the offender and saving the girl.

The rest of the police officers and an ambulance showed up a couple of minutes later, with the paramedics inserting the bar getting a small glance at the injured detective and the two men on the floor. "Come on sir, let's get you checked out."

Laying down on a gurney, the man helped him remove the jacket and began taking in the wound. "There are an exit wound and no significant blood loss, that's a good sign. Although, you still need to go to Chicago Med for further examination and stitches." He nodded observing as a bandage was wrapped around the hole and a sling was placed in order to keep his arms in the right position above his heart. "If you feel any dizziness while we are still here, let me know."

As soon as the paramedic left, Gabby made her appearance by his side, smiling. "You lucked out, cowboy." She sighed in relief. "It's pretty much a through-and-through. You'll need some stitches,
but otherwise, you're fine."

Jay smiled eyeing her. "Thanks." He exclaimed seeing his best friend approaching.

"You two okay?" Antonio asked.

"Yeah." Gabby reassured him.

"I got to say, this didn't turn out the way I thought it would, but you got the job done."

"Yeah, and I caught a bullet in the process."

"You say that like it's a bad thing. You know, since you were shot on a job, that pretty much means you get to choose your next detail."

"Intelligence. I want intelligence." Jay cut him off.

"Yeah, well, we'll see what we can do about that.." Antonio replied chuckling, leaving the pair alone.

Taking a peek at the small bloodstain on the bandage, the detective turned all his attention to the woman standing in front of him. "You know... this doesn't have to change things for us."

"I wish that was true." She answered surprising him. They spent an amazing night the other day, what had happened now?

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that when we first met... I didn't sign up for this. My brother and sister-in-law have the best relationship I've ever seen...Except for when he goes undercover. It changes people. Maybe if the circumstances were different."

"Maybe one day they will be." Jay said slowly raising his body from the gurney and waling disappointedly towards the ambulance.

He allowed the man who previously checked his injury to take his blood pressure once again before they load him in, taking him to the hospital.

Jay was hurt. Emotionally hurt. All these days that he was dating Gabby seemed like a dream, a good one actually that you don't want to wake up from. He couldn't believe she would just dump him like that because of his job. He saved people daily, he saved the city, he was a hero.

Laying on the stretcher of the ambo, he observed the equipment around him and kinda felt lucky that they didn't have to use it on him. He was pleased to only have an IV line connected to his right arm. He couldn't picture himself spending another month in a hospital room, not after his medical discharge. If it wasn't for his friend Mouse, he wouldn't have lasted so long.

As soon as the vehicle came to a stop, he was wheeled into the emergency department of Chicago Med and to one of the trauma rooms being followed by a doctor and two nurses.

"Detective Halstead, right?" The man asked while placing his stethoscope on his chest.

Jay nodded.

"Let me check that wound detective." Unwrapping the bandage, the man took a peek at the blooded hole. "Alright, this will need some stitches. However, I have to keep you in here for some hours to make sure that your blood pressure remains at normal levels and your condition won't be deteriorated."

He sighed but he didn't have another choice. As much as he hated hospitals, he knew it was for his own benefit.

The nurses connected him to a monitor revealing his vitals. Although he wasn't a medical expert, he could figure out when someone was in critical condition and luckily he wasn't. It was a matter of time before he returned home, having a good shower, well not the stitched shoulder and get a good night's sleep. The only problem was the pain but with a great number of painkillers, it would go away soon.

After a nurse cleaned the wound, another male doctor appeared in his view.

"Good evening detective Halstead, I am doctor Choi." The man smiled while grabbing a chair and sitting next to him. He put on a pair of gloves he was holding in his hands and demanded a syringe that was placed on the tray next to him. "I am going to insert lidocaine inside so you won't feel any pain."

Jay closed his eyes waiting for the needle to insert his skin and gripped at the sheet tightly. As a soldier, he managed to control his fears except for that one. He would pass out only at the idea that a needle ripped his skin.

"Someone's scared." The doctor joked smiling. "I thought cops didn't have any fears."

"We are humans too, not robots." Jay chuckled. "I wasn't afraid of needles before Afghanistan."

"Afghanistan?" Dr. Choi looked at him surprised. "I served there too, as a doctor."

"I was in Rangers. Trouble followed us literally every day. But we never got actually hurt… Until our discharge… They attacked our Humvee sending us to the hospital… Those who survived. Anyway, when I woke up there was a nurse above me, holding the largest needle I'd ever seen in my life."

Recalling the previous events of his life, was tough, so he always described the moments he witnessed in a humorous tone.

After a few moments of silence between the two men, the doctor grabbed some gauzes and gently placed them on the wounds before standing up and throwing his gloves on the trash can. "Alright, we are done. I'll see you in a few hours." After helping him with the sling that it was required for his condition, the doctor left the room.

Jay laid down on the bed in order to rest and stared at the ceiling while concentrating his hearing on the heart monitor next to him. The steady beeping made him realize how lucky it was today… If the bullet hit any major organs, maybe they would attend his funeral now. Health is more important than a girl. He thought taking deep breaths. It doesn't matter how much he would try, he would eventually forget Gabby.

Suddenly the curtain was opened revealing two familiar figures. One of them belonged to his best friend, Antonio, and the other to the most famous dirty cop of Chicago. Hank Voight. The stories that were told about him interested him in joining his team.

"Jay Halstead?" Voight asked, stretching his hand forming a handshake that was received back in a matter of seconds.

"It's me, sir."

"Nice work kid, Antonio talked to me about you."

Cracking a smile, he sat up a little before falling backward, groaning due to the pain radiating on his shoulder.

"Take it easy, buddy." Antonio patted his leg.

"You know…" Voight continued. "I like people who give 100% of themselves for a case. I think you and my team could get along very well."

"Soo? That means I am on Intelligence now?"

"You can start whenever you ready."

"Fine. How about tomorrow?" Jay exclaimed excitingly.

"Oh my friend, what he means is when you recover." Antonio stroke his friend's hair on purpose causing him a feeling of annoyance. "Moreover, you have to be strong to join Intelligence. You don't mess with this guy." He pointed at his Sergeant.

"I'll take my chances," Jay replied smiling.

In the end, the risk of being killed brought a major advantage in his life. He had a new purpose for living.
