For more on what happened to a certain spy network? It's revealed in the bonus episode After Miranda.
Scene 4: I Got to Thinking...
(Not long before going to rob the Alliance bank)
Mal checks, "Zoe...is Wash gonna straighten this boat out before we get flattened?"
He sounds off all a sudden.
With a faint grin... Zoe tells him, "Like a downy feather, sir. Nobody flies like my mister."
Mal faintly smiles.
There's a awkward silence.
Mal clears his throat some.
He says, "she's ready to earn her keep."
Zoe gives him a hard look.
She observes, "that ain't all it is though."
A little teary eyed... Mal heavily sighs.
At a near whisper... He tells her, "You're right. You're damn right. Heavy sigh. You know she expressed wantin' to join the crew. Since then, I got to thinkin' maybe there come a day where she'd have to be first mate."
Zoe faintly laughs. She cuttingly remarks, "surprised she ain't already runnin' the ship herself, sir. She's smarter than most: More than even Simon is."
Mal faintly laughs.
He figures, "that's true. So, it's settled then?"
Zoe heavily sighs.
Mal kind of lightly presses, "what?"
Zoe gives him a solemn look.
She reasons, "it is a good idea. But...you know her brain is still half missing. Right?"
Mal kind of incredulously laughs.
He briefly moves his finger up.
He concludes, "so wait. You appreciate my idea. But...but, you don't now?"
Getting teary eyed... Zoe admits, "to be honest, sir...I think it's a mite too soon. She's still just a kid. Faint sniffle. If she were eighteen, she might have enough of her brain not missing to..."
Firmly... Mal pinpoints, "noted. But, we ain't got another year Zoe. We got a job to do now, and there ain't no better way to get it done."
Zoe heavily sighs. She mostly assures, "I see that, sir. But, I think there should damn well be another way."
Mal admits, "so do I. Now let's go do this job so we can best retire."
Zoe faintly laughs. She figures, "yes. Best retirin' would be damn good."
Mal faintly laughs.
Zoe faintly grins. Mal faintly smiles back.
Mal continues on up some metal stairs to lower the Flying Mule down from the tether lines holding it by the catwalk and do preliminary checks.
The teariness in his eyes dry up just as quick: All himself like clockwork.
Scene 7: Wish It Was That Easy, Jayne
(a alternate version of a certain extended scene of the movie, with Kaylee and Jayne talking in the cargo hold)
With a faint sneer... Jayne mutters, "oh. You're just in a whinge 'cause that prissy doc is finally disembarking. I know you still kinda gunnin' for his heart. Hell, it still don't make much sense to me. Faint laugh. Me, I say good riddance."
He drops a metal piece of wreckage for the open much smaller bay below.
It crashes noisily down into it.
Kaylee very faintly smirks at the gunning for his heart part.
But... Her expression gets tenser quick.
Jayne goes over to grab another metal piece of wreckage to throw into the much smaller bay.
He glances back over to Kaylee most of the way to and back.
A little teary eyed... He goes on, 'he don't belong here, and he ain't never tried to gettin' sexed with you. Who ain't fer gunnin' for a heart? Can't think of any one myself 'side from them preachers. 'sides, much as his sister could get all annoying and that all it is... Deep sigh. She real ain't no saner than one of 'em Reavers."
Kaylee sternly turns to him.
Getting teary eyed... She shouts lowly, "that ain't even so!"
She sighs heavily, hunching over.
Jayne comes over to her.
Jayne asks in concern, "you okay there?"
Kaylee sniffles hard.
She shakes her head.
Tears are falling from her face.
Some sobs escape from her lips.
Kaylee mutters under her breath, "no. Course I'm not. Hard sniffle. You know, if it ain't for Simon punchin' the captain... Hard sniffle. I'd have it in me to just go up and tell Simon if he'd want to "grind my private machinery" to just do it! But... Hard sniffle. It ain't matterin' if I did now. Hard sniffle! Captain would just push me off sooner for going behind his back another time too much. Hard sniffle! 'sides... You ever stop to think Simon always had been like that: Even if he ain't admittin' it? Like the captain in a way all his own? Hard sniffle. I just...I couldn't really saw it 'till he..."
Jayne shakes his head.
He sits down on one of the crates right next to her.
He turns kind of noisily to face her.
Grim... He figures, "that ain't the gorram point. He...he'd come up askin' to get sexed sooner if had gunnin' for your heart long as you figure. Hell: Soon as I were gunnin' for Saffron's heart? I asked her. Even if'n all you kinda fought over it."
Kaylee faintly laughs.
The teariness in her eyes dries up some.
She playfully and lightly punches at his side some.
With mixed feelings... She reflects, "well...that weren't the worst thing you did. Hard sniffle. Turned out it wasn't. I'm happy for you and her, and I'm happy to be thought of as a sister she wished she had. Hard sniffle. J...just wishin' Simon and River could have a place here as easy and that I could real know what Simon think of in bed and all. You know?"
She briefly smiles midway through.
Jayne figures, "yeah. I ain't know before. But...now I do. Still ain't much sense to me how you like those two. But... Faint laugh. I ain't real standin' none in your way."
With a very faint smile... Kaylee adds, "thanks Jayne."
With a very faint smirk... Jayne insists, "sure."
After a bit though... Kaylee's expression dims.
She figures, "but...now they're leaving us. Hard sniffle. Just like Shepherd Book and Inara. Least you ain't leavin' without me."
She puts a sympathetic hand on his.
Sounding nervous all a sudden... Jayne adds, "yeah. Yeah. Good figurin'. I...I got to finish up."
Kaylee just faintly nods.
And, Jayne goes back to grabbing metal pieces of wreckage to drop into the smaller bay.
Scene 8: He's No Petty Thief to Me
(a slightly alternate version of a certain deleted scene of the movie, with Sheydra and Inara talking)
Getting teary eyed all of a sudden... Inara insists, "great romance has nothing to do with being a Companion, Sheydra. You...you should know better."
Sheydra puts a contemplative finger on the side of her mouth.
Inara sniffles hard some.
She looks somberly at her.
Before Inara can say something... Sheydra remarks, "I'm not the one who had a torrid but powerful affair with a pirate and..."
Inara gets up fast.
She mutters something hard to hear in Chinese.
She practically shouts, "what?! Who did you tell, Sheydra?!"
She glares furiously at her as she shakily stands there.
Sheydra gulps very nervously.
She tries hard to put on a faint smile in spite of that. But, her teary eyes give her away.
Sheydra puts a comforting hand on Inara's shoulder.
She tries to assure Inara, "nothing really defining you or him. Just that a Companion of high standing had a torrid but powerful affair with a pirate and her former Companion friend on a far off moon. Hard sniffle. Please don't worry of these stories I've told, Inara. I tell you the truth."
Inara closes her eyes, taking some deep breaths.
Then... She finally looks at Sheydra again.
And... Inara just very solemnly nods.
The teariness in her eyes starts to dry up.
Sheydra faintly smiles. She says, "you're welcome."
She kind of slowly pulls her hand away from her shoulder.
But, before she can full pull her hand away... Inara briefly puts comforting hands on hers.
They faintly smile knowingly to each other.
Then... Sheydra kind of looks out to the luscious green trees and hillsides.
She continues, "the girls all trade stories in the dorms at night. Faint chuckle. Admittedly...I've traded some not really defining stories of you when we couldn't think of any. Just to try to keep them happy. Nothing more. But, they do like to talk about those stories. And, young girls..."
She deeply sighs some.
Inara wonders, "what?"
Sheydra faintly smiles.
She remarks, "young girls see a spirit that behaves just like the one I, however not really defined in stories of you, could be you. And, they think she is you. In one of the stories the girls make up of you, you make love in a burning temple. I think that one is my favorite."
She looks in a endearingly sweet manner at Inara.
Inara blushes some at that.
She deeply sighs into her hands.
After a bit... Inara looks up.
With mixed feelings... Inara admits outright, "I... Thinking of Mal is unbearable! Hard sniffle. He's not a petty thief. But... Hard sniffle. But, I really don't know how good or not of a legendary pirate he is."
Sheydra gives her a kind of skeptical look. Yet, she awkwardly grins with clenched teeth.
Inara comments offhandedly, "you know what I really mean."
She starts to get teary eyed again.
She walks over to the pillar on the other side.
She shakily stands there, trying to hold back tears.
She sniffles hard.
Some tears fall from her face, despite closing her eyes.
Somber... Inara murmurs under her breath, "he has a dark side, Sheydra. A really horrible one. And, I... Hard sniffle. I still can't be sure of... Hard sniffle. I mean..."
And... Inara breaks down crying.
Teary eyed... Sheydra whispers, "shh. Whether you leave us or not...I'll always be a close friend of yours. Nandi will be a close friend of yours. Try not to think about "your pirate captain" unless you want to go to him. All right?"
She holds Inara close as she does.
After a long minute... Inara slowly nods.
Sheydra just very faintly smiles.
Silent tears keep falling from Inara's face.
And... She and Sheydra stay there like that for who knows how long.
Scene 11: If I Truly Wanted Someone Bad Enough...
(when Mal and Kaylee are tensely talking by the bar area of the Maidenhead)
Kaylee mutters lowly, "if you had a care for anybody's heart, you woulda...!"
Kaylee, Mal, Wash, Jayne, and Zoe are walking down the stairs for the bar area below.
Mal takes a heavy breath.
Mal turns about just before all their feet touch the final step.
Somewhat cold... He argues, "you knew he was gonna leave. We never been really but a way station to those two. And how do you know what he feels now? He's always got River to worry on. Sure: He worried on just 'bout all of us. You and he kind of experimented with dating anyhow. But, he still coulda shown you more assured like. Moderate sigh! Point I'm makin' is if I truly wanted someone bad enough? Wouldn't be a thing in the Verse could stop me from going to her."
Kaylee glares piercingly at him...almost like River was glaring right at him.
That made Mal gulp real nervously.
Kaylee shoots back, "tell that to Inara and Nandi."
Mal's nervous look sharply turns to shock.
Mal calls out, "gorramit! How...how could you know I was in bed with...?!"
But... Kaylee is already storming off.
Zoe, Jayne, and Wash look fairly stunned themselves.
They're trying hard not to laugh over that revelation. But, some laughs escape from Jayne all the same.
Kaylee pauses halfway up the stairs.
Getting teary eyed... Kaylee calls back down, "oh, just forget it captain! You don't real care for me!"
She then completely storms off.
Tensely... Mal calls up, "hey! I ain't the one who punched 'im! I ain't seen you defendin' me nor..."
Tensely... Zoe warns, "sir...we ain't alone now."
She and Wash are now glaring in Mal's direction.
But, with how fast he whirls back around... Mal doesn't even see it.
A very familiar face to him asks, "domestic troubles?"
Mal faintly smiles: Almost like nothing happened.
Soon... Manty and Fingo are both coming to talk to Mal and Zoe.
Scene 14: They'll Come At You Sideways
(when Mal and Book are talking late at night on Haven)
Book reflects, "they'll come at you sideways. It's how they think. It's how they move. Sidle up and smile...hit you where you're weak."
He sniffles hard some on the last part.
Yet, he maintains his calm demeanor.
Mal is looking real uncomfortable...teary eyed himself.
He's been having nightmares just subconsciously wondering who else Book might've killed as a double agent.
But, he'd never want to admit it to anyone...even to himself.
Book continues, "sorta man they're like to send believes hard. Kills and never asks why."
He turns back toward Mal.
Mal finds it hard to look up.
He reflects, "never askin' why sometimes gets you corpsified...or..."
He sniffles hard.
Then... He finishes the thought, "...someone that real ain't deservin' to be shot."
Some tears fall from his face.
Book tries to assure, "I wasn't born a Shepherd, Mal. But...no one is born with sins. Sin can come sideways too."
Mal very faintly chuckles.
Teary eyed still... He looks up.
He wonders, "what...what about that gorram special hell you talked of so much, preacher?"
Interestingly... Book very faintly smiles.
He highlights, "every man and woman born in this verse is born with a soul with a shot at reaching Heaven. Then, a child starts to walk for himself or herself. Adolescence, adulthood...many sins and good deeds for his or her way. How we still walk makes a bigger difference in life: For other folk and yourself. You seem to still walk hopeful."
Mal heavy sighs.
After a bit... He argues, "no. Still ain't sure I'm hopeful myself. We're on the raggedly edge, Shepherd. Heavy sigh. Sniffle. Things lookin' awful less hopeful out."
He looks out to the Black some at the next to last part.
Book points out, "you have some more time to look out. They'll come. Faint chuckle. History sometimes is very odd. Might be that you're not on the end of your rope like you think."
Mal faintly chuckles.
With a smirk... He comments, "that's true. History can play like God: Complicatin' everything that shouldn't and should."
Book remarks back, "God can be as wrathful as kind. I know it might fall on ears hard of hearing, son. But...you still might want to think of not bringing down his wrath."
Bittersweetly... Mal concludes, "yeah, well...thanks. But... Faint laugh. No. I conjure it's too late for me not to."
Book very faintly smiles.
He figures outright, "could always ask God. God shows himself or herself different to different people. What more could he or she do that you think he or she done to you?"
Mal laughs hard some.
He catches his breath some.
Then... Mal concludes, "that...that's funny Shepherd. But, no."
Solemn... Book reflects, "I have ghosts as well, Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Hard sniffle. Sometimes it's best to make amends that you don't want to."
Mal faintly smiles.
He figures, "sometimes. We can mighty agree there, Shepherd."
They faintly smile to each other.
Then... Mal starts to go, "still..."
Book questions, "what would you like to ask, son?"
Mal remarks, "Your curious history makes a man mighty more curious...even takin' out the part what I ain't real curious to know more of. Have to tell me more about your adolescence sometime."
Mal drinks some from his flask.
Book faintly but warmly chuckles.
He considers, "perhaps it does. But...no. I don't have to tell you."
On that note... They just faintly smile to each other knowingly.
Scene 15: This Wave Got Awkward Real Fast for Both of Us
(a slightly altered version of a certain extended scene from the movie, when Mal and Inara are talking over the Cortex and Inara is on Bena)
Mal looks fairly shook.
He realizes, "Inara."
Inara is on Mal's Cortex screen.
After the bank job on Constance... Mal thought it was discarded by Inara when she left.
Now it mostly sits on the wall of his bunk, cause there was nowhere else he figured it would fit.
Only just recently though did Mal turn it on for the first time.
Thinking back to that very story... Inara tries hard not to chuckle.
She can't help but smile wide though.
Fairly confused... Mal asks, "what?"
Inara's smile quickly fades.
She blushes a little.
She gets a little teary eyed.
With very mixed feelings all a sudden... Inara tells him, "I, uh... Nervous chuckle. I'm sorry Mal. My mind must have wandered a little. It feels so long since... Ahem. Umm...is this a bad time?"
Mal admits, "kind of too long to be honest like. Very faint chuckle. Still good as any."
Midway through, he brushes his hair back with his hand.
Inara playfully smiles.
She requests, "please tell me you're alone or wearing pants."
Mal slightly grins at the notion.
He very awkwardly chuckles.
He remarks, "naked as the day I come cryin'. How's your world out on the Rim?"
Inara answers, "cold. It's autumn here."
Mal wonders, "still at the Training House?"
Inara answers, "right where I left to think."
She looks down awkwardly.
Awkwardly... Mal concludes, "right. I...I remember it as nice enough. Picturesque."
After a bit... Inara looks up.
She just says, "it is that. What about you?"
Mal reasons, "still flying."
Inara wonders bluntly, "everyone in good health? I worry about them. Hard sniffle. Them and you."
Kind of cryptic... Mal comments, "rosy, pink, and blue. You know how it is."
Nervously... Inara concludes, "I'll...I'll take that then to mean a yes. Thank you."
Mal continues on, "you're welcome. So...what occasions the wave? Not that to see you ain't... Well, you look more'n fine."
Inara blushes.
With mixed feelings... Inara voices, "oh. Thank you. I... Deep sigh. I don't even know if now is a good time. But...but, there will be a time. Please believe me."
Mal firmly nods.
With a firm smile... Mal reasons, "never had cause not to."
Inara concludes, "I...I'm sorry. I...I still can't say for sure. I wish it was that simple."
Awkward all a sudden... Mal insists, "no. I...I ought to be sorry. Sniffle. Never meant to..."
Inara insists, "I know Malcolm Reynolds. You don't have to remind me right now."
Mal gulps nervously.
Inara continues, "now...this is what the occasion really is. We have something of a problem here. With the locals, I... I thought maybe... Moderate sigh. Well I think you'd get the idea well enough if you saw yourself."
Midway through... There's a sharp solemnness to her tone.
Mal checks in concern, "you could use a gun hand?"
Inara gulps nervously.
She continues, "I'm sincerely hoping not. But, if you were close at all, you... The crew... Deep sigh. I know it's been a long time. But, your crew could still take ease here a while. And, there'd be payment."
Mal glances sharply down at his shoulder.
He then turns back to the Cortex screen.
Mal considers, "well...payment is never not a factor. I could sound out the crew, see if... This pot like to boil over soon?"
He points up some with his finger.
Stoic... Inara says, "soon. Not right away."
Awkwardly... Mal figures, "well, it would be... I mean... Heavy sigh. Kaylee's been missing you something fierce."
Inara faintly beams. She comments, "I miss her too. Very faint chuckle. I even miss our arguing occasionally, Mal."
For a second... Mal goes wide eyed.
Very uncomfortable... Mal admits, "I...I never did miss the arguing."
Inara faintly shrugs.
With a very awkward faint smile... Inara figures, "well, I kind of did. Very faint chuckle. Only looking back and on occasion, of course."
Sounding a little better... Mal reasons, "of course now."
Mal looks about some.
Before Inara could say something... Mal brings up, "umm...you left a... Got some of your stuff by the airlock. Never did get a chance to get it back to you just 'fore you left 'cause of..."
Inara is quick to interrupt, "oh. Ohh. I don't care about it. That's... Very faint chuckle. That's no problem. Keep it or give it back. I'll live."
Nervously... Mal tries to insist, "I didn't look through the stuff. I just... Heavy sigh. Just sundries I'd expect anyhow. Rather I give it back just so you..."
Inara faintly shrugs.
She faintly beams. She adds, "all right."
There's a real awkward silence.
Mal tells her, "well, it's... It's kind of late where I'm at. I'll send a wave as soon as I can."
They awkwardly nod at the same time.
Inara tells him, "thank you." Mal adds, "yeah."
Then... Mal turns off the Cortex screen.
Scene 16: So...Trap?
(a slightly alternate version just after Zoe suggests there's a trap to Mal, and Jayne, Kaylee, and Wash are there too)
With a smile... Kaylee wonders, "how can you be so sure Inara don't just wanna see you?"
Mal sternly glares at her.
Kaylee's smile fades some.
She figures, "sometimes people have feelings. You know? I mean...I'm referring to people."
Mal figures, "y'all were watching, I take it."
Some guilty glances.
Jayne fake coughs some.
Zoe admits outright, "yes."
Mal pinpoints, "you see us glare a mite or fight?"
Kaylee answers, "well...no."
She's getting wide eyed in fear.
Mal gives her a all too plain look.
Mal just answers, "trap."
Then... He sharply turns around to walk out of the cockpit.
Scenes 19-20: Inara and Mal's Escape From Alliance Special Forces
(a slightly alternate version of two certain deleted scenes from the movie, beginning when Mal and Inara are escaping from the Operative at the Companion House)
Inara leads Mal along a clearly out of the way hall.
Inara is teary eyed with a storm of mixed feelings. But, she's mostly focused on just running right now.
All too casually... Mal insists, "had him..."
Inara asks lowly, "what?!"
She doesn't even turn around.
Mal insists, "I think that I was winnin'!"
Inara deeply sighs.
She mutters under her breath, "you well meaning idiot!"
Mal very faintly laughs.
That is...until he hears a wood panel sliding open.
Inara whispers, "Mal."
She goes to grab his hand to try to move him along.
But... Mal is already walking a step ahead of her through it.
Inara quickly follows him down the underground steps.
Soon...
They both come out on a kind of grassy mountainside.
Mal grunts violently some as they do.
Inara helps him to his feet.
She starts to ask, "you sure you don't want to...?"
Somewhat tense... Mal insists, "I'm well enough. Thank you."
He feels the still pulsing some dark red cut on his head as he does.
Inara just deeply sighs.
She offers her hand to him.
Mal firmly takes her hand.
Before they get near to the bottom of the mountainside... Inara lets him move her along for a bit.
Suddenly... Inara pulls herself right in front of him.
She starts to draw out her Ruger Mk II pistol.
Four Alliance military special forces officers are on patrol in front of Inara's shuttle.
But... Mal puts a firm hand over Inara's pistol to lower it.
Inara turns sharply around to face him.
She whispers kind of loudly, "Malcolm Reynolds, what is...?!"
Mal kind of quickly brings her over to a bush.
They both duck behind it.
The Alliance military special forces unit nearly see them.
But... They just go back to patrolling in front of the shuttle.
Mal realizes, "yeah. I see 'em. But... Moderate sigh. Hard sniffle. We ain't get to be needin' time we don't have. I have a mighty good plan for buyin' us some time."
Sarcastically... Inara whispers, "oh. That's not suicidal at all. You now nearly got yourself killed by a operative, and you're telling me you have a good plan?!"
With a slightly cold tone... Mal insists, "hey. I ain't killin' nobody here. Just...just trust me Inara."
Inara very faintly smirks at that.
She finally moves off to the side of him.
She politely motions her hand out.
And... She tells him, "fine. After you."
Mal adds, "thank you kindly."
Inara deeply sighs. She offhandedly comments, "don't be so sure it was."
Mal gulps nervously.
But, soon... He takes out a fancy looking mostly metal cylinder grenade.
It's got a downward blocky red line, two black buttons, and black rubber cupping on both ends.
Mal throws the grenade.
It lands by one of the Alliance Intelligence special forces officers.
He calls out, "grenade!"
All four of them split up.
They all dive for cover, mostly covering their heads.
A bright flash of light goes off.
But...there's no explosion or smoke.
Mal and Inara reactively cover their eyes.
But... They don't dive for cover.
They quickly get into Inara's shuttle.
On his way into Mal's shuttle... Mal makes sure to pick up the fake grenade with the greatest of ease without even looking.
Probably had quite a bit of practice at it.
Mal very faintly chuckles. He remarks, "yeah. They love the colorful lights."
The Alliance military special forces officers start to quickly get up.
They aim with their rifles at Mal.
But...they groan hard.
They're still seeing some flashes of bright light in their eyes.
Mal is standing right in the open door to Inara's shuttle.
He waves and smirks wide their way.
Then... He finally is closing the door.
Loud choos go off.
But...they all miss the door.
Loud clinking from plenty of ricocheting bullets against the shuttle's frame. But, there's no holes.
Mal starts punching in the ignition sequence for the shuttle.
Inara lightly pushes him away some.
She beats him to the pilot's seat.
Tensely... Inara tells him, "let me fly my own shuttle. Please."
Mal gulps nervously.
But... He's quick to say, "fine. But...but, you sure you remember what Serenity even looks...?"
He nearly falls over.
Inara's shuttle shoots straight up...spinning out and heading out into atmo.
Mal nearly falls over.
Inara comments, "I haven't been away "that" long. Just tell me: Where are we going?"
Mal tells her, "Serenity's east of us, nestled in the low ridges."
He's still holding onto a grabable top part of the shuttle.
Inara deeply sighs.
She concludes, "Mal...try not to take this the wrong way. But, in your next life, I hope you come back as a polyp."
She sharply turns the shuttle to the left.
The shuttle is coming around a mountainside for cover from the Operative's battleship.
The Operative's battleship is a little ways off in atmo...like it's waiting calmly for mice to stumble upon it as a hovering mousetrap.
By now, Mal is getting into the co-pilot seat.
He blots some of the dark red liquid around his nose with a tissue.
Cluelessly... Mal asks, "is that good?"
With a very faint smirk... Inara cuttingly concludes, "well...I thought you like dragging people to hell with you. I want you happy."
Straight faced... Mal points out, "'cept I ain't laughing."
Solemn all a sudden... Inara points out, "wasn't meant to be funny. But, still... Moderate sigh. I'm sorry."
Mal firmly insists, "it's fine. Just...just get us back to Serenity, and we'll suss this out. Least I hope we does."
He very nervously gulps. Inara really nervously gulps herself.
Inara deeply sighs.
And... She admits, "you're not the only one. Something tells me we all do."
They briefly very faintly smile to each other.
The shuttle fully comes diving down around the mountainside.
And... Serenity begins to become visible by some low mountain ridges.
Scene 22: On a Level of Hell
(when Jayne and Mal are arguing; after just getting away from the Operative on Bena)
Mal asks, "you want to run this ship?"
Jayne moderately sighs. He tensely asks, "you know what I want?"
Mal gulps nervously some.
He figures, "looks like maybe not that much after all. Just tell it straight to me."
Jayne explains, "I want someone to run this ship. But, 'less Saffron hitched a ride in one of them crates 'fore we took off from Haven... Moderate sigh. I ain't that guy."
Almost at the same time... Inara and Zoe comment, "now there's a unpleasant thought. There's a chilling thought."
Jayne calls out to them, "hey. I ain't talkin' to you! This is between me and Mal."
Inara gulps very nervously.
Jayne argues on to Mal, "hell, Saffron would do a damn sight better than you. Getting us lashed over a couple of strays. No offense doc. I think it noble as a grape the way you look to River. But, she ain't my sister and she ain't your crew. Oh, yeah. And...need I remind you she ain't exactly helpless! So, where is it writ that we got to lay down our lives for her...which you steered us toward on a ruttin' cowardly run?"
After a bit... Mal concludes, "well...well, I ain't too crazy about cowardly runnin' myself. You're right on that. But, forget gettin' someone else to steer us clear of this. No one else can steer us anyhow."
Suddenly... Inara steps forward a little.
Confidently... She suggests, "aside from me. And, I'm here now."
Jayne faintly smirks. He comments, "you know, come to think of it, that ain't half dumb."
Most everyone else faintly laughs and chuckles over that.
Mal nervously gulps.
With some mixed feelings... Mal addresses Inara, "I appreciate the gesture. But...but...how long have you been stayin' away cause of me to think things out? Why ain't you in your shuttle now to see to it?"
Inara points out, "thank you. But... Moderate sigh. You all might need me more now."
Mal very faintly laughs in amusement.
Mal tries to argue, "you're... We...we are not having this conversation right now."
He kind of points to her at the first part.
Inara raises a eyebrow.
She remarks, "and why not? You've never had a problem with flying us through hell before."
Mal mutters under his breath, "which is why I'm tellin' you as kindly as I can to walk away."
Very confused... Kaylee asks, "captain?!"
Mal warns her, "stay out of this, Kaylee."
He sharply whirls back to face Inara.
Very much annoyed... Inara challenges, "like we have much of a choice now. You think it's not that complicated to just walk off? Well then, please: "Enlighten" me Mal. Where am I going to go to be safe from that operative?! Where are any of us?"
Mal finds himself too stunned for words.
Then... Kaylee cuts in, "hey!"
Everyone stares at her.
Teary eyed... Kaylee speaks her piece, "he...he didn't start this war. Hard sniffle. I might not like where we're going. None of us really like it: We'd rather be rich for good after thievin' from that bank on Lilac. But, he didn't start any of this."
Inara, Zoe, Wash, and Simon very faintly smirk and smile.
Mal adds, "thanks."
With a faint smile... Kaylee adds, "sure."
Jayne figures, "that true. But, still... Moderate sigh. I lost a whole crew once to The Alliance. Even me and Saffron couldn't. Hard sniffle. I ain't lookin' fer it to happen all over on this boat, and I ain't think you do either!"
Mal's expression has gotten lighter though.
He considers, "true. I understand it's too close to home for you. But, but... Faint awkward chuckle. What makes any of you think it too close to home for me now?"
Dead serious... Jayne shoots back, "no, that's right. Alliance starts the war, you volunteer, Alliance starts it up again with the gorram AATSs, Zoe volunteers 'nough coin and guns for a alliance all her own... No offense this time Zoe. I awful respect tryin' to do right there the way you had."
Zoe briefly very faintly smirks back.
Jayne continues, "Battle of Serenity, Mal. Battle of the Dust Devils, Zoe. How many...?"
Mal's cold glare has returned.
He starts to walk off.
Jayne shouts, "hey! I'm talking at you."
Mal turns around.
He looks about ready to punch him.
Jayne puts to question, "how many men in your platoon came out of there alive? How many men in Zoe's came out of there that weren't pinched?"
Zoe very sharply glares his way.
She tells him, "Jayne... Moderate sigh. I only goin' to tell you this once. I appreciate no offense at me from you this once. Scares me just from sayin' it out in the open. But...you wanna leave this room."
Jayne mutters under his breath, "damn right, I do. Best of luck, Inara."
He walks off for his bunk. But, he makes sure to walk right by Inara as he does.
Very uncomfortably... Inara says back, "thanks?"
Mal starts to storm off the other way.
Getting teary eyed... Inara asks, "Mal?"
She fast walks after Mal.
Scenes 23-24: This Isn't the War
(begins right where Scene 22 ends)
Inara calls out, "Mal?! Mal!"
Tensely... Mal asks, "what?"
He's standing back of the cargo hold now.
Inara tries to assure, "Mal, I... Deep sigh. I'm not trying to hurt you."
Mal states his case, "well, I... Heavy sigh. I have to say: You're doin' a mighty bad job at stickin' up for me. Least Kaylee did stick up for me."
He points back the way they came.
Inara starts to mutter, "you stupid son of a...!"
She takes a deep breath.
Then... With a piercing gaze... She highlights, "you think I want to just waltz right in and take over Serenity? This isn't war, Mal! Not here, and not there. That's all I wanted to say. But, with tensions so high already, I didn't... Deep sigh. I didn't want to make things worse."
Mal briefly very faintly smiles.
He comments, "kind of a little late when Jayne looks to be plannin' mutiny on your honor. I figure you never asked. But, it's still there."
Inara faintly smiles in relief.
She concludes, "oh. Is that all? Faint nervous chuckle. Please Mal. Don't worry about it. If you want, I'll talk to him myself. Okay?"
She puts comforting hands on his.
Mal lightly insists, "that ain't all necessary. But...thanks."
Inara says, "you're welcome. Now, will you let me continue?"
Mal figures, "course I will. But...in my bunk now."
Without a second thought... Inara says, "okay."
Soon, in Mal's bunk...
They're sitting together close on the edge of his bed.
Inara has a comforting hand on his.
Kind of coldly... Mal thinks out loud, "let's...let's see if I got this straight now. You tellin' me that this isn't the war cause you think I don't already know?"
Inara finds it kind of hard to look up at him.
She brings up, "well... Deep sigh. I do hate to put too much salt in your wounds. But, since you're asking me...you came in the training house looking for a fight."
Mal insists, "I came looking for you."
Scene 28: Why Didn't You Least Try to Leave?
(a alternate version of a certain deleted scene from the movie, when the Serenity crew is beginning to head into Reaver territory)
Sounding curious... Mal asks, "did you really miss this place?"
Teary eyed... Inara thinks out loud, "yes. But... Hard sniffle. Not so much with this side of yours."
They look away from each other.
There's a very awkward silence.
Then... Mal kind of slowly turns back to her.
He's teary eyed.
Pained sounding... Mal can't help but wonder, "why didn't you least try to leave? Hard sniffle. You know I ain't all kinds of easy to wait for."
Inara looks right at him.
Some silent tears fall from her face.
More somber sounding that she's ever sounded... She voices, "why would I want to leave you now? Gos se. I thought about it. Why wouldn't I have?! But... It has got complicated really quickly. Hard sniffle! What matters is you need a first mate to try to keep you from turning your anger out on them: Especially now."
Mal looks down hard at the floor.
He heavily sighs.
With mixed feelings... He considers, "maybe you're right. I...I'd better go check on the..."
He starts to get up.
But... Inara gets up faster.
She stands in front of him.
Before he can say something... Inara considers, "Mal, please. Hard sniffle. Let me check on everyone. You need your sleep."
She puts a sympathetic hand on his.
After a bit... Mal very faintly chuckles.
He tells her, "thank you kindly. I still ain't sure I deserve you. But..."
They start to pull their hands away.
With a faint rueful smile... Inara cuttingly remarks, "well...there's still time."
Mal can't help but chuckle hard some.
Mal adds, "good night, Inara."
Inara very faintly and awkwardly nods.
She adds, "good night, Mal."
Mal starts to head for his bunk.
Then... He suddenly turns back to her.
Mal questions, "you sure I shouldn't see about the inevitable mutiny going on to see if you're leadin'?"
Inara gives him a very stern look.
She warns, "don't tempt me Mal. Just go to bed: Now."
Mal puts up his hands.
Then... He finally heads to his bunk to sleep.
Inara faintly rolls her eyes in amusement to herself.
Scene 34: Did you Bring the Grenades?
(when Mal and Jayne both bring out the hand grenades)
Tensely... Mal checks, "tell me you brought them this time?"
Jayne hands Mal a hand grenade.
Jayne kind of quickly pulls out another from his pockets.
He's holding Vera with his free hand.
Jayne points out, "only had time fer securin' three more hand grenades. Vera got three left on her."
Mal throws one hand grenade in. Jayne throws in the second.
Mal quickly shuts the open door.
He covers his ears.
Jayne steps back some feet away.
A loud explosion on the other side of the door.
Mal orders, "right now, we just got some time for makin' ourselves a barricade. Only use the grenades on Vera if they're 'bout to overwhelm you. Dong ma?"
Jayne checks, "you sure that be enough, Mal?"
While they're talking, they're pushing a big crate over.
Soon, they're both breathing hard and groaning.
But... They soon place it right against the closed door.
Mal cuttingly remarks, "just do it! We can shout at each other later if we still alive to seen it."
Fairly shook... Jayne goes, "right."
Mal asks in concern, "Zoe?"
He fast walks over to her.
He looks fairly worried.
He checks, "are you here?"
Solemnly... Zoe firmly answers, "do the job, sir."
Scenes 37-38: Meeting Lenore
(when Mal gets to Mister Universe's computer room)
Mal finds Mister Universe's computers blue screened.
Electrical sparks spark off countless hanging thick strands of wires.
Mal sees a trail of dark red liquid across the floor.
Then... There's a muffled explosion.
Mal hears someone fast walk over toward the couch.
He aims his newtech gun carriage equipped pistol back toward the couch, expecting the Operative.
But... He instead sees Lenore standing there.
She has her robotic hands up.
Lenore explains, "Mal! Moderate sigh. It's me: Backup Lenore. But, I process well why. He's good. I... Hard sniffle. I had to self destruct the backup shuttle just to be sure he couldn't reprogram me through it."
Mal grimly realizes, "the Alliance Operative."
The original Lenore and Mister Universe are both lying facing up on the couch...dead.
The original Lenore has her robot chest unscrewed into a mess of scattered metal plates and dead circuits.
The Operative sure wasn't taking chances.
Nervous... Backup Lenore goes, "hm-hmm."
She gets teary eyed.
Mal lowers his pistol.
Backup Lenore goes on, "he tried to kill me and the original. But, Mister Universe made me a lovebot prototype on two kinds of levels. Hard sniffle. If only he was more than...human."
She tries hard to restrain her tear ducts.
She shakes some.
She lightly strokes the hair on Mister Universe's body's head.
She sniffles hard.
Mal is quick to say, "all right. All right. I take it to be so."
After a bit... Lenore whirls back to him.
Lenore says, "thank you. When you deal with legends quite a bit, you invest in more security."
Mal very faintly smirks at that.
There's some loud footsteps.
Lenore realizes, "he's coming back now!"
She sniffles hard, hunched over.
Some tears fall from her face.
Mal calls out, "Lenore! Lenore! Maybe that don't matter now."
Lenore looks up.
She very tensely glares.
She mutters back, "what the hell shot processing you have? Weren't you...?!"
Mal doesn't look phased much.
He suggests, "look. You're a love bot designed by Mister Universe: Can't you just send the signal?"
Lenore faintly smiles.
She tells him, "sorry. Very faint chuckle. That would take three months at least to mod me that way. But...Mister Universe gave the original Lenore a message in case he was killed. She only slightly modified it. But, I can play it for you."
In a rushed manner... Mal just nods.
Lenore closes her eyes.
There's some faint clicks and chones.
Lenore opens her eyes again.
Words of the recording are coming out of her 3D printed lip molds around her robot mouth. But, she sounds slightly more monotone now.
The recording goes like this:
Guy killed me, Mal. He killed me with a sword. Faint chuckle. How weird is that? I got...a short span here... They destroyed my equipment. But, I have two kinds of a backup unit...bottom of the complex, right over the generator. Hard to get to. I know they missed it. They can't stop the signal, Mal. They can never stop the signal. And, if you can... Save my lovebot...Len...ore...
The Operative's sword pierces through Lenore's robot chest...carefully aimed in one of her robot body's cracks under her back robot plating.
Electrical sparks fly in front of Mal in the air.
Mal reactively dives for cover.
He groans hard some.
His vision is blurry some from the sheer brightness of the sparks.
The Operative concludes, "I haven't destroyed everything after all. That changes now."
Teary eyed... Mal cries out, "Lenore! !"
Lenore warns, "I already activated a shutdown for myself. Hard sniffle. Killing me won't..."
Sounding tense... The Operative says, "don't bother. Keeping secrets is my business: It's not my concern to ask why."
Lenore whirls her arm around.
She's about to bend the sword with her hand.
But... The Operative kind of easily hurl throws her.
She violently crashes into one of the blue screened monitors.
It shatters into small burning pieces.
Lenore mutters under her breath, "Wángbā dàn! Keep...keep dreaming like...like The Alliance. I still prefer scrap to...to hearing you talk."
Her head and chest are sparking off like crazy.
Many off sounding little chones and clinks.
The Operative concludes, "and you're willing to die for that belief. Very well."
He readies his sword.
Lenore tears open her chest plate.
She groans hard.
By then... Mal has his vision back.
He's about to fire his pistol at the Operative.
But... Lenore calls out, "no, Mal! Message already...already... Go!"
At the same time... Lenore wraps the sparking off wires from within her around the Operative's sword.
The Operative shakes violently some from the electrical shock.
He groans violently some.
Mal puts away his pistol.
He runs for it...heading for the bottom of the complex.
But, with Lenore's processors significantly damaged against shards of Mister Universe's own tech... The Operative is quicker.
He stabs her in her completely open chest...destroying her.
Lenore shuts down permanently...completely crashing down to the floor.
The Operative turns back to Mal...only to find he's gone from the room.
The Operative glares.
Loud footsteps.
Some getting more and more distant heavy breaths from Mal as he runs.
The Operative runs after him, following the sound of his heavy breathing.
Scene 43: One Last Acid Trip
(just after everyone falls back to the corridor)
Zoe tells Jayne, "Jayne...grenade."
Somber all a sudden... Jayne murmurs, "very last one. Happy killy, sweet grenade."
He takes off the last magnetic latched custom grenade from Vera.
He loads it into the black mounted grenade launcher.
He cradles Vera close in a disturbing manner.
Inara can't help but faintly roll her eyes annoyedly: In spite of being real nervous.
The Reavers are close to the jammed open door.
Just then... Jayne launches the grenade through the open door.
A big explosion of flash, acid, and smoke.
The Reavers shriek as they burn.
The whole room is sickly sizzling in smoke and acidic bubbles from two more big explosions from all three magnetic latched custom grenades.
And...so is the back of the control panel.
With nothing solid holding it up, it falls down and smashes to sickly sizzling pieces.
The door is left jammed open because of it: With a opening of 4 feet by 4 feet.
Scene 45: My Turn Now
(when River is about to run back into the room with the Reavers)
Close to tears... River is telling Simon, "you and Kaylee have always... Hard sniffle! You two have always taken care of me."
In the dark... Simon is on the ground, with a hand still over his deep dark red wound.
A realization suddenly dawns on River.
She kind of quickly gets up.
She says, "my turn now."
And... River breaks into a run...heading back for the room.
Scene 49: Whoa. Good...Good Answer
(when Mal asks Inara where she'll go; after the signal goes out from Mister Universe's moon)
Mal asks, "ready to get off this heap and back to civilized life?"
He's already heading for the cockpit.
But, suddenly... Inara somewhat nervously says, "I, uh..."
Mal stops.
He turns back to face her.
He looks stoic.
Confidently... Inara points out, "I...I don't think Serenity is a heap."
Mal faintly smirks.
He figures, "that there...that's fair enough."
Inara and Mal faintly chuckle.
With a bittersweet smile... Inara walks closer to him.
Somewhat nervous and not all at once... Inara suggests, "for that matter, I...I don't know if I want to think to myself any longer. Maybe I don't want to get off Serenity."
She even plays with his belt a little.
Mal looks fairly stunned.
He goes, "whoa. Good... Ahem. Good answer."
Inara pulls her hand away just as quick.
She finds it hard to look up.
Inara thinks out loud, "Mal, I...I don't want to overstep. Moderate sigh. I know there are many sides to you. But, after Serenity takes off..."
With a smirk... Mal asks, "yeah?"
Inara wonders, "I'll see you in my shuttle? We...we can just talk if you..."
Mal mostly assures, "Inara... Even still talkin' to me is a kindness."
Inara looks up.
She grins.
And... She says, "you're welcome."
Mal sincerely says, "thank you."
Inara waves to him.
Mal briefly waves back.
Then... Inara slowly walks back to her shuttle.
She is still grinning.
Mal then continues on to the cockpit.
But... He's still smirking to himself.
Surprise Bonus Scene 1
(a new one spinning off of scene 28 for this extended and slightly alternate scenes collection)
Scene 29: Checking on Everyone
(begins right where scene 28 ends)
Inara checks up on everyone.
They don't say much back. But, Inara's hugs are plenty to comfort them well enough.
But...then comes her last stop.
It's Jayne's bunk.
Inara says, "hello."
She lightly waves.
Teary eyed... Jayne says, "hey Inara."
He's been checking his guns on the wall. But, they're already polished to a shine.
Vera is lying on the bed.
Inara asks, "you want to talk about it?"
Jayne straightens up to face her.
Jayne faintly laughs.
Somewhat bitter... He mutters, "ain't carin' to think on it much."
He starts to quickly turn his back to her.
Getting teary eyed... Inara suggests, "Jayne, you...you don't have to tell me anything. Please... Hard sniffle. Please just listen."
She deeply sighs.
She finds it hard to look up.
Jayne deeply sighs.
He turns back to face her.
Jayne considers, "all right. For you, I will."
With a very faint smile... Inara adds, "thank you."
Jayne gulps nervously.
Solemnly... Inara explains, "I... Hard sniffle. Deep sigh. I found out six months ago that being captain is too much for me: All those lives to protect at once. Hard sniffle. But, Mal... He and Zoe fought in the war and held their ground. Hard sniffle. I stand up for myself very well. I may be a Bodyguard grade Companion. But, I...I could never be a soldier. Hard sniffle. It really doesn't feel right to me either: Propping up dead bodies of our friends on Serenity just so we can have safe passage. But, at the same time..."
She faintly very nervously chuckles.
She sniffles hard.
Jayne sniffles hard.
Some tears fall from his face.
Inara voices, "I'm not saying maybe he isn't going to hell for what he's doing now. But, sometimes... Hard sniffle. Sometimes Mal does things we could never live with because he thought it was the right thing to do. Hard sniffle. Maybe he has made a grave mistake before. But... Hard sniffle. But, in spite of what I feel about this plan...I...I really don't think there is another way to protect all of us: Especially River. The only thing that can help her is on that planet in Reaver space. If helping River was all we had to do, I'd take her and Mal with me on a shuttle just to save everyone else. But... Hard sniffle. Hard sniffle. I'd rather not die at all and live with the guilt he carries than have us all dead. Hard sniffle. That's why I could never try to mutiny Mal. I believe in him...even though everything that I was taught growing up as a Companion in The Academy is against it."
The whole time... She's been fighting to hold back tears, shakily standing there.
Inara says, "please. Please excuse me."
Some tears start to fall.
Overcome with mixed feelings... Inara starts to run off.
Jayne is about to say thanks.
But... Inara has already gone up to the catwalk.
And, then... She cries to herself.
Surprise Bonus Scene 2(a new one spinning off of Can't Take the Sky From Us)
Scene 9: Psychotic Love to a Tee
(Jayne and Saffron talk over the Cortex, not long before Serenity lands at Beaumonde)
There's some static from the live feed. But, the picture is clear enough.
Jayne is sitting by a Cortex screen by the control panels.
He looks bothered as hell.
Saffron tries to assure, "ohh. Don't feel bad, Jayne."
She has on a silk black formal jacket with silvery lining down the buttons. She's also wearing Jayne's engagement ring on her finger, and very dark red ruby stone earrings on her ears.
Each of her earrings is creepily painted to look like a anatomically correct heart.
Irritatedly... Jayne shoots back, "why the hell not?"
Saffron figures, "'cause it means I still got a shot at takin' away the bounties first."
She mischievously grins as she does.
Jayne laughs.
With a smirk... Jayne figures, "Saffron...I love you. But, it ain't no competition."
Saffron faintly scoffs. She complains, "talk for yourself. I so much would be thrilled to finally beat Mal at gettin' all the good scores for a change. You guys seem to get all the good thrilling scores! When do I get one?"
Jayne laughs.
Saffron goes red in the face.
She warningly glares.
She murmurs back, "Jayne, this isn't funny for me! I really want those kind of big thrills."
She pouts on the last part.
Jayne nervously gulps. He stops laughing.
Jayne apologizes, "I'm sorry. Just..."
Saffron's expression lightens.
She wonders, "just what, Jayne?"
Jayne pinpoints, "we pulled off good scores before. I ain't real sure why you gettin' pissy over the "so much time we'll make up"."
He points his finger at her at the last part.
Saffron very faintly laughs.
She blushes nervously.
Saffron admits, 'actually...you're right. We will. But... Sniffle. I real miss you and me pulling off brilliant jobs."
She gets a little teary eyed.
Solemnly... Jayne figures, "damn right we do."
Solemnly... Saffron concludes, "thank you. Seems you're not the only one getting assured right now."
Jayne adds, "sure."
Seductive sounding all of a sudden... Saffron reveals, "oh, and, I...I had a present made for you."
Jayne asks, "really now?"
Saffron grins. Jayne smirks wide.
Saffron figures, "yes. You want to see?"
Jayne figures, "course I do."
Saffron hints, "well... Faint laugh. Just take a really good look at me."
She unbuttons her silk black formal jacket.
She fully opens her jacket up.
And, under it...she shows off her newest T-shirt for him.
It's a glittery very near whitish blue T-shirt with a topless pin up of herself...holding up her favorite kind of silvery lipstick in one hand and holding a black leather strap down in her other hand.
Across it are the words "please don't tear yourself away from me" in dark red.
Her favorite handgun is floating in the background, close by her lipstick in her hand.
Jayne looks real stunned.
Finding it a little harder to even find words... Jayne goes, "oh, that is... Hell, that is... Faint laugh. Ruttin' good whoring in the day. I love that shirt of yours. Faint laugh. Only trouble is it ain't another you comin' out of it to get sexed with me."
He grins wide at the last part.
Saffron blushes.
She laughs hard some.
She grins wide herself.
She suggests, "oh, I'd see what I can do about that. And, you're really welcome."
Jayne very awkwardly laughs on the first part.
Soon... He hears a loud knock on the closed cockpit door.
It's Mal.
Jayne mutters, "oh hell."
Saffron asks in concern, "what's wrong?"
Jayne explains, "naw. You're damn good. But...but, Mal wants me out the cockpit so they could land to drop off River and Simon."
With a storm of mixed feelings all a sudden... Saffron realizes, "ohh. I'm sorry we can't keep admirin' each other as one flesh right now. But, I...I get it. Hard sniffle. You and River have been really down since that bank job went south real fast. I hope you and Mal find a good enough score to keep flying. And, I hope River and Simon going off on their own goes well."
Jayne deeply sighs.
He figures, "yeah. I damn hopin' we do."
He hears another loud knock.
Real tense... Mal calls out, "Jayne! This is still my ship. I ain't wishin' to just cut the feed on you. But, gorramit Jayne! This is still my ship."
He's still standing just outside the door.
Jayne calls back, "I gettin' off Mal! Don't got to come in."
Kind of sarcastic... Mal adds, "oh good."
Teary eyed... Saffron very nervously gulps.
She anxiously looks toward Jayne.
Jayne then turns back to her.
He adds, "I hope River and Simon get off well. We could least agree there."
Nervous... Saffron adds, "well enough. Hard sniffle. Call me tomorrow if you can, Jayne. I'm gettin' real worried about Malcolm."
A little teary eyed... Jayne firmly concludes, "yah. I will. Good night Saffron."
With a very faint smile... Saffron adds, "good night Jayne."
And, with the press of a button... Jayne cuts off the private line.
